Coming Soon to My Blog: March 2012

Tomorrow is the first day of a new month, and I promise you there will be plenty in store for you to read: Here's what you can expect to be posted in the coming weeks:

* A Good amount of film reviews.

* More live-blogging of "Saturday Night Live." March 3 and 10 will feature all new episodes of the late-night sketch comedy series. This week, Lindsay Lohan will be appearing on the shoe for her fourth hosting stint; her last being in April 2006. Before the episode, I will be posting some quick thoughts about the actress' return to "Saturday Night Live" as well as some predictions of what sketches could air. Then, throughout the episode, I will be commenting on her performances as well as the quality of the writing. I also plan on covering "Saturday Night Live" on March 10; when Jonah Hill is expected to host for his second time; as his previous appearance was back in March 2008. I plan on doing A LOT of blogging about these two shows.

* A writing addressing this summer's upcoming superhero films "The Avengers," "The Amazing Spider-Man," and "The Dark Knight Rises." I will be examining the casts and premises of each film; and explain exactly which one I'm most excited for.

*And More.

So, enjoy the last day of February. The month of March is going to be very exciting; as I plan on doing a lot of blogging. Thank you all and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment!!!

That's the show!!!

All in all, an alright telecast.

I have to say that it was slightly better than last year's. But not everything was great at all.

Billy Crystal did an alright job hoisting the show; but he has done MUCH BETTER in the past. His opening monologue seemed very rushed and didn't amaze me like his previous ones. It seems as if he was struggling to keep up with the music. Most of jokes throughout the night were okay; but they weren't memorable. The segments he presented, such as guessing what people in the audience were thinking wasn't funny at all. He also looked like he was going through the motions at different points during the show; and I have a feeling that he4 will not be hosting the show for a while. I just have this feeling.

The presentations were alright; but I feel that they could have been better. My favorite comedic presentation was will ferrell's and Zach Galifianakis'; as their concept was very original and humorous. I But, in all honesty, I think that Melissa McCarthy was TRULY hilarious; as her interaction with Billy Crystal was very funny and I thpught she was very engaging when she was presenting the awards with her "Bridesmaids" co-stars. In fact, I REALLY LIKED seeing all six women introduce the awards together; as they all work VERY WELL together and I'm very glad they got to present more than one award. They truly were one of the best ensembles in a film this year!

I also thought that Meryl Streep and Michael Douglas made very significant introductions; and theirs were ultimately the most meaningful. I also liked the introductions that Natalie Portman and Colin Firth gave for each nominee in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories respectfully. They spoke well and I liked that they added some humor to their praise for the nominees as well.

I also liked the filmed segments that featured various entertainers reflecting their experiences viewing films and making movies. It was nice to see an array of performers; and they really shared some meaningful stories and experiences.

I REALLY want to see "The Artist", "Hugo," and "The Iron Lady;" as they won the evening's top honors. And even though I didn't see "The Iron Lady",I'm very happy for Meryl Streep; who won the award for Best Actress. She is great PERFORMER and one of the best of our time!

I'm happy for Octavia Spencer; who won for her performance in "The Help." She did a very good job and I hope to post a review of "The Help" in the future.

And that concludes my coverage of this year's Academy Awards. Thank you all for following me tonight and I look forward to writing my next piece sometime this week.

Thank you again and have a good night!

The Academy Awards Are Coming! The Academy Awards Are Coming!

Tonight, it will happen! The 84th Annual Academy Awards will begin at 8:30pm sharp on ABC! It will be a special event that will feature appearances by many noteworthy performers and filmmakers; many of whom have dazzled audiences worldwide with great performances, enthralling screenplays, and engrossing special effects. And hopefully, the show's duration tonight will be MUCH BETTER than last year's; which featured less-than-stellar hosting performances by James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Fortunately, with the always-entertaining Billy Crystal serving as the shoe's host, we will hopefully get a very enjoyable and lively ceremony. Thus, I can say with cautious optimism:

The 84th Annual Academy Awards Should Be More Fun Than Last Year's

On February 27, 2011, the annual awards telecast was hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) most likely chose the duo to emcee the program as an attempt to attract a younger audience. Unfortunately, the idea proved to be a poor one; seeing as both entertainers did not exhibit good chemistry. As the ceremony progressed, Anne Hathaway's chipper attitude became increasingly grating; up to the point that whenever she was on stage, I found myself cringing.. What's more, James Franco looked as if he had no interest in being on stage; as he delivered his lines in a very unenthusiastic manner. Furthermore, his attempts to be funny appeared completely forced; including a segment in which he dressed up as a woman for the sake of supposedly performing a duet with Anne Hathaway. In addition, none of the evening's presenters were given anything funny to do or say; ultimately leading to a very listless evening with only a couple bright spots; which included genuine acceptance speeches by winners Natalie Portman and Colin Firth. In other words, there was hardly any humorous moments throughout the telecast; which further made the night drag on in a forgettable manner. In other words, the 83rd Academy Awards was a very lackluster outing. But, fortunately, there is hope for this year's event.

But, there is hope for this year's ceremony, This past November, It was announced this past November that Billy Crystal would be hosting the event for a ninth time. I have always enjoyed Billy Crystal's performance as the host of the Academy Awards; due to his comic delivery and likable personality. His song-and-dance monologues are enjoyable; as he would poke fun at a specific movie as well as praise the performers-- particularly those who were nominated. What's more, Crystal's typically goodhearted performance as the host helps make the night go by smoothly; as his introductions of the presenters are very amusing and kind; and his attitude establishes a good rapport with the many celebrities in attendance. In other words, Billy Crystal should be a very good host; one that will vastly make-up for the recitals turned in by James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

It also appears that the AMPAS are trying to make the evening memorable by providing a assortment of presenters that are known for making audiences laugh. For instance, Ben Stiller, who last appeared at the ceremony two year's ago, will be on hand to present an award. In 2010, Stiller presented the award for Best Makeup dressed as a Na'vi from the movie “Avatar.” The entire segment was unexpected; and was funny due to Stiller's dialogue and the very sight of him in full makeup. Also on hand to present an award are Will Ferrell, who has always treated the audience to memorable appearances on the event in past years, and Zach Galifianakis; the latter of whom has never appears on an award show of any kind. The two performers will be appearing in a political comedy this August; and I'm sure that they will be presenting a very funny skit before presenting an award. In addition, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, academy Award Nominee Melissa McCarthy as well as their fellow “Bridesmaids” co-stars Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon-Covey will be bestowing an honor as well. All six performers were great in “Bridesmaids;” on account of their keen comedic talents and their top-notch chemistry-- ultimately leading them to be one of the year's best comedic ensembles. Henceforth, it truly seems like the Academy Awards are trying to make the evening very lively and memorable.

However, despite these positives, you can still expect me to be very critical of the event. Throughout my live-blogging coverage, I will be commenting on different matters that will contribute to my overall grade for the evening's event. Such fields of concerns will include:

*Billy Crystal's complete performance as host.

*Any skits that are exhibited throughout the night

*The sincerity of the winners' acceptance speeches

*The introductory speeches by the presenters of the awards

*And much, much, more!

So don't miss a minute of my live-coverage; which will begin at 8:30pm sharp! Please be sure to have your computers set to my blog and have your televisions set to ABC before showtime. Keep refreshing your screens so you see my latest comments. Feel free to comment on any of my posts; as your feedback is very important. So stay tuned. "Saturday Night Live" Episode Review: Zooey Deschanel / Karmin

This season, the writers of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” have been penning sketches that rely on the repetition of jokes as well as one-note characters. Fortunately, this past weekend’s episode, which was hosted by Actress Zooey Deschanel, proved to be one of the year’s best; due to the enclosure of sketches that were actually both creative and humorous. In addition, all the segments featured keen performances by Deschanel as well as the show’s castmembers. In other words, this past week’s episode was very enjoyable and actually memorable.

The show opened with a campaign advertisement for Sen. Mitt Romney. Romney was once again portrayed by Castmember Jason Sudeikis; who continues to shine throughout the season due to his dependable and hilarious performances. Throughout the opening, Sudeikis’ Mitt Romney remained positive about his campaign; despite the fact that he was losing to fellow runner Rick Santorum. Jason Sudeikis’ cheerful depiction of Romney is always funny; and his upbeat attitude about not winning the primaries was an interesting idea for the opening. Sudeikis’ Romney was joined in the ad by his pet dog; that eventually began barking loudly at the politician. The idea to include a dog in the sketch was very creative; as it included an extra spark to the sketch. All in all, a very fun sketch and a great way to start off the show.

For her monologue, Zooey Deschanel, who donned herself in a red dress plastered with pink hearts, played the ukulele and performed a song about someone forgetting that February 14th was Valentine’s Day. Though she appeared a tad stiff, Deschanel did a fine job performing her song. In addition, it was nice to see a one-person monologue once again this season; as Charles Barkley was the first to do so thus past January. Deschanel did an alright job; and I was looking forward to seeing the rest of the show.

The two official sketches that followed Zooey Deschanel’s monologue were actually quite intriguing and performed well. The first was a parody of “Piers Morgan Tonight;” which marked Featured Player Taran Killam impersonating the Journalist. It was good to see Killam have a central role in a sketch this week; as the previous episode he hardly got the opportunity to do anything funny whatsoever. Taran Killiam’s portrayal of Piers Morgan was very funny; as his slightly-exaggerated British accent was very funny. The subject for the sketch was Rapper M.I.A. giving the finger during the Superbowl Halftime Show; causing viewers to become upset over its unsuitability. Castmember Nasim Pedrad portrayed the rapper; who attempted to defend her actions. Pedrad’s performance as M.I.A. was a tad weak; seeing as her impression sounded nothing like M.I.A.’s actual voice. For her part in the sketch, Zooey Deschanel played an infuriated and religious mother who was offended by M.I.A.’s gesture; and wanted to take a stand against the action by displaying an exaggerated wrist bracelet. While Deschanel’s performance was amusing; it should be said that Kristen Wiig proved to be a vital component to the sketch; thanks to her comical impression of a very conceited Madonna. Other laughs in the sketch came from Jason Sudeikis and Fellow Castmember Fred Armisen; who portrayed gaudy members of hip-hop group LMFAO; who performed in the Superbowl along with Madonna. The sketch was closed with a very funny appearance by Castmember Andy Samberg; who portrayed a Cirque de Soueill gymnast that had caught much attention for his tightrope bouncing during the halftime show. It was fun to see Samberg leaping up and down in a comical fashion; and it provided an unexpected dynamic to the sketch. This was a very creative sketch that successfully featured both imaginative writing and very humorous performances. In other words, this was a good one.

The next sketch of the night was “Les Junes de Paris;” which was actually making its appearance for the fourth time on the show. However, unlike the other instances, this particular installment was the first to officially break its typical fashion. With the inclusion of Zooey Deschanel, Academy Award Nominee Jean Dujardin joined in the dancing; which was exhibited in black-and-white footage resembling an old-fashioned silent film. It was obvious that the sketch was parodying “The Artist,” which stars Dujardin and is nominated for Best Picture in this year’s Academy Awards. It was nice to see that Taran Killam, who stars in these sketches, be joined by the Golden Globe winning actor; and I have to admit, that the “Saturday Night Live” castmember is a good physical performer. Everyone did a fine job in the sketch; and even though it was a reoccurring segment, the break-in-format made it fun.

Before "Weekend Update" was a brief sketch about a newspaper office set in the 1940s. It featured the editor, played by Jason Sudeikis, introducing the newest employee; played by Zooey deschanel. Everyone in the sketch, except for Deschanel's character, spoke in a rapid-fire delivery that paparelled films of that time period, However, the fast pacing of everyone's dialogue flew over the head of Deschanel'd character; who constantly tried to fit in by attempting to speak in a similar fashion, but didn't succeed. Kristen iig did a fine job playing a former reporter that was perplexed by the hiring of Deschanel's character; and Taran Killam portrayed an enthusiastic reporter that rushed in to cheerfully deliver a news story. Everyone did very well with their performances; especially Zooey Deschanel, whose attempts to fit in were hilarious. This was a creative sketch; as it wasn't at all reoccurring and it relied on good performances and clever writing. As of now, the show was on a good streak.

The episode’s installment of “Weekend Update,” however, proved to be a mixed bag. Seth Meyers’ jokes were either slightly funny or devoid of any humor whatsoever. A gag about NBC’s “Smash” and its strong ratings leading to a series of spinoffs equipped with “Law and Order”-esque titles was Meyers’ best; as was funny to see him poke fun at NBC wanting to cash in on the new series’ success. This installment of “Weekend Update” also featured a not-very-humorous segment that featured Nasim Pedrad impersonating Journalist Arianna Huffington. The impression was alright; but the material that Pedrad was given wasn’t funny at all. Pedrad did the best she could do make the segment work; but the weak writing just greatly affected its quality.

However, “Weekend Update” was saved by the reoccurrence of a segment called “Get in the Cage;” which featured Andy Samberg portraying a comically-exaggerated version of Nicolas Cage that interviews a fellow actor about their performance in a recent film. This time, however, the segment was altered by the presence of the ACTUAL Nicolas Cage; that was meant to be a clone of Samberg’s characterization. It was good to see Nicolas Cage poke fun at his method of acting as well as point out just how embellished Samberg’s impression of him is. It was also fun to see Cage poke fun at his upcoming release of “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance;” as it’s always nice to see celebrities poke fun at their films. Andy Samberg and Nicolas Cage had good chemistry and the entire segment improved this week’s installment of “Weekend Update” MUCH better.

Following “Weekend Update” was a new talk-show sketch entitled “Bein’ Quirky with Zooey Deschanel;” which featured Castmember Abby Elliot impersonating our host of the evening. It was funny to see Elliot exhibiting a straight on portrayal of Deschanel; right down to the facial expressions and manner of speaking. The sketch was made even better when Deschanel portrayed Mary Kate Olsen; who enabled her depiction to appear amusingly frail and devoid of a personality. It was very funny to see Elliot impersonating Deschanel; who was literally right in front of her during her tenure in the sketch; and it was good to see her be a good sport. The sketch also featured Kristen Wiig, who portrayed a very shy Bjork, as well as Taran Killam depicting an extremely bashful version of Michael Cera. This impression proved to be very funny; as Killam did a terrific job mimicking the actor’s soft voice and timid method of laughing. The sketch itself proved to be quite funny; as Elliot’s representation of Zooey Deschanel presented activities like knitting and staring at the camera while the music of Mama Cass plays. All in all, a very fun sketch that contributed to the enjoyable nature of the episode.

However, the greatest aspect of the show was a series of pre-taped commercial parodies that were a response to Clint Eastwood’s Chrysler commercial that aired during the Superbowl. The ad-spoofs featured Castmember Bill Hader impersonating an extremely-irritated Eastwood going on excessive rants about the Republican candidates running for president as well as how American are failing to catch up to China’s success rate. The parodies included various running gags; such as the increasingly- aggravated facial expressions of Bill Hader’s Clint Eastwood as well as his pants getting more and more higher; resulting in his slacks reaching his neck in the final send-up. Hader did a great job mimicking Clint Eastwood’s gruff voice and manner of gritting his teeth when appearing infuriated. All three commercial parodies were brilliantly written and performed; thus resulting in not only being the best part of the show, but perhaps one of the greatest parts of the season!

Of course, not everything during the episode was great. One such sketch featured Zooey Deschanel and Kristen Wiig portraying the hostesses of a supposed all-out crab cook-out. Both women would constantly increase the waiting time for their guests; who were longing to eat cooked contractions. The joke got old quite quickly; as we were getting the idea that the visitors would never get to dine on their much-anticipated dinner. Both Wiig and Deschanel gave good performances; but unfortunately, the sheer predictability caused the sketch to become very thin. We knew that the visitors weren’t going to get their meal whenever the ladies stepped out of the house; and the ending of the segment confirmed the inevitable punchline. I feel bad for Kristen Wiig and Zooey Deschanel; as they were forced to work with poor material that wasn’t very amusing. What’s more, I greatly wish that the castmembers who played the guests that were waiting for their meal were given more to do than just get more and more annoyed with the delay of their meal. While this sketch proved to not be funny, the following piece proved to be even worse.

What came next was a disagreeable segment that was actually already done this season. It took the form of a television program that was enthusiastically hosted by two tech experts, played by Zooey Deschanel and Andy Samberg, who introduced short pre-taped clips of people’s hands fiddling around with technological devices in a manner that made them appear to be engaging in sexual activity. The whole segment was overly-juvenile; as the clips were accompanied by some of the show’s castmembers’ voicing the devices. This resulted in the vignettes appearing to take the form of short pornographic films; which, in turn, made the sketch even more ridiculous. This whole segment actually first aired when Emma Stone hosted this past November; and I remember not liking it back then, And guess what? I STILL DON’T like this segment. Everything about it was very poor; especially its title; as it alone makes me infuriated. "What's the name of the title", you ask? This whole segment is called "We're Gonna Make Technology Hump." That headline alone makes me dislikee the sketch due to its sheer absurdity. Its sketches like these that make me question the future of “Saturday Night Live;” as humor like this is not at all clever and it makes the show appear foolish. The entire idea of the segment isn’t funny; mainly due to its pure silliness.

The last sketch of the night featured Kristen Wiig and Zooey Deschanel portraying Victorian-era sisters that kept writing to each other about their latest love interests that happened to be borderline foolish. The male castmembers that played their boyfriends gave good performances; as watching their characters stumble around comedically proved to actually be funny. And Wiig and Deschanel were fine when playing their characters as well; as they did a fine job speaking in a traditional manner that was suitable for the time-period. However, it should be said that the ending to the sketch felt a bit abrupt; as it failed to leave the audience with a memorable punch. Nevertheless, a finely performed sketch and a decent way to end the show.

In retrospect, Zooey Deschanel’s first time hosting “Saturday Night Live” was enjoyable; mostly due to a good amount of cleverly-written and funny sketches. A majority of the cast gave good performances throughout the night; especially Taran Killam and Kristen Wiig. Bill Hader also had a good night; thanks in large part to the Chrysler spoofs that featured his ingenious Clint Eastwood impression. He also got the opportunity to shine in a clever Verizon ad-parody that lampooned the many multipart options that are come with ordering the company’s new 4G LTE. The commercial parody provided a good amount concerning the complication of the phone service; and Hader gave a great performance as an enthusiastic salesman cheerfully explaining the technology to an old person, played by Fred Armisen. Who appeared confused about the product. These pre-taped segments allowed Bill Hader to demonstrate more of his comedic skills; and I DEFINITELY feel that he’s the best performer on the show currently. .

As for Zooey Deschanel, I think she did a fine job hosting the show. Though she appeared slightly nervous during the monologue, she gave it her all during the night and proved to be a decent sketch comedy performer. She exhibited good chemistry with the cast; especially Kristen Wiig; as evident by their good performances in the crab dinner sketch. I just wish that particular sketch was written better. I wouldn’t mind seeing Zooey Deschanel appear again; as I think that she could be a good reoccurring host.

I also happen to think that Karmin was a fine musical guest. Their performances of their songs “Brokenhearted” and “I Told You So” were both very catchy and brisk; as their sound was slightly different than past musical guests.

Thus, this past weekend’s episode of “Saturday Night Live was quite enjoyable; despite a couple of misfires in the final third of the episode. I just hope that Former Castmember Maya Rufolf will be provided with good material when she hosts on February 18!

Quick Trailer Thoughts: "The Amazing Spider-Man"

Today, I bring you the trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man;” Director Mark Webb’s much-anticipated reboot of the original film that opened ten years ago and starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker; the high school students who eventually becomes the iconic superhero after getting bit by a radioactive spider-- thus gaining incredible superpowers. This new movie will open on July 3; and will star Andrew Garfield as the titular protagonist. After viewing the preview, I have a few brief thoughts about the upcoming blockbuster:

1. Right from the start of the trailer, Andrew Garfield has grabbed my attention; due to his enthusiastic delivery as Peter Parker. As the preview goes on, it is more-than-evident that the actor is excited about playing Peter Parker; as he is seen speaking his lines in a dedicated manner. This is especially seen in an excerpt where he’s sitting down for dinner with Love Interest Gwen Stacy, tenderly played by Emma Stone, her father Captain George Stacy; portrayed with great authority by Denis Leary. What’s more, after seeing him portray Eduardo Saverin in “The Social Network,” during which he performed quite well, I’m looking forward to seeing Garfield take on such an important role as Spider-Man for his first starring part. Henceforth, I’m looking forward to seeing Andrew Garfield take on the role; and judging by the trailer, I think he’ll do a good job.

2. It’s really exciting that Mark Webb’s reboot is focusing on Peter Parker’s relationship with Gwen Stacy; his true first love. In the original series, which was directed by Sam Raimi, Peter Parker falls in love with Mary-Jane Watson; who was portrayed by Kristen Dunst. The original franchise didn’t introduce Gwen Stacy until the third installment; during which she was played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Now, in the new series, we get to view the loving bond between Parker and Stacy in larger detail; instead of being tacked on in the third chapter. And I’m truly looking forward to seeing Emma Stone portray Gwen Stacy; as she is quite adept at bestowing endearing performances. Judging from the trailer, Stone and Garfield interact well together; and I’m looking forward to seeing them on the big screen.

3. I am very excited to see that the central villain in the movie is The Lizard; henceforth we’ll get to see Dr. Curt Connors, who Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker meets after learning that he worked with his late father, in both human and lizard form. I’m looking forward to seeing Dr. Curt Connors, who is being played by Rhys Ifans, be a primary focus of the film; as the character made side-appearances in the previous films- during which, he was portrayed by Dylan Baker. In both “Spider-Man 2” and “Spider-Man 3,” we never got to see Curt Connors in lizard form. Now, after viewing the trailer, the design of the lizard looks more-than-intriguing; as we get to see close-ups of the villain’s eye and tail. It looks like the animators put in a lot of effort in designing The Lizard; as I can clearly make out scales on its body and tail. Henceforth, I’m very excited about seeing Rhys Ifans portray Dr. Curt Connors and The Lizard; as the trailer has made his involvement look very enthralling.

4. I’m interested in seeing the movie focus on Captain George Stacy, the father of Emma Stone’s Gwen, as well; as it’s god to see the character have a pivotal role in this film. Throughout the trailer, Denis Leary is giving a strongly-authoritative performance as the character; and I’m curious to see how it will play out. It's an interesting difference from the original series; as we are going to see the character in great detail during the course of the film. I'm interested in seeing how Denis Leary's Captain George Stacy paints Spider-Man out as a threat; resulting in our hero having to deal with many conflicts. Not only is he going to have to take on The Lizard, going he’ll also have to deal with Captain George Stacy, the police, and perhaps almost everyone in the city. Needless to say, Andrew Garfield-s on-screen persona is going to have his hands full.

5. The fight sequences between Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man and Rhys Ifans’ The Lizard look very intense; especially in the clips of the two in the sewer and fighting on top of a tall building. You can tell a lot of effort was put into these sequences; and I’m sure that the 3-D images will look crisp and exhilarating on the big screen. I just hope that prolonged action sequences don't take much time away from more-important aspects—such as strong character development, good acting, and intelligent screenwriting. I don’t want another “Transformers”-type situation (i.e. Too much time spent on perfecting special effects results leads to the sacrificing of good storytelling and quality acting).

All in all, I’m hoping that “The Amazing Spider-Man” proves to be an entertaining excursion that provides all the necessary ingredients for making a valuable film. With intriguing concepts being brought forward, such as the back-story of Peter-Parker’s parents as well as the impending relationship between Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and Denis Leary’s Captain George Stacy, this movie has much potential. I'm also very excited to observe Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone act together throughout the film; and it will be great to see their characters' relationship on the big-screen. So here’s hoping “The Amazing Spider-Man” proves to be a fun-filled and noteworthy film. Otherwise, I won't be swinging down to the theater for the inevitable sequel.

Film Review: "Drive"

Films must never lose the attention of the audience. Many times, filmmakers take the easy route and fill up a specific movie with acts of violence and rapid-fire car chases. While these concepts can be intriguing to viewers, I see them as a way to make-up for a hastily written storyline and poorly-created characters. When observing a film, I expect significant passion from the performers as well as a cleverly-written story that evokes significant human emotion. Henceforth, I was a tad weary before watching this past September’s action-thriller “Drive;” as I feared that there wouldn’t be a completely thought-out story and eager performances; on account that it featured high-speed car chases and violence. Luckily, however, I was happy to see that Screenwriter Hossein Amini wrote a film that is rich in human emotion, intriguing characters, and unexpected surprises. What’s more, lead actor Ryan Gosling offers a keen performance that ultimately allows viewers to sympathize with him. What’s more, it was great to see Albert Brooks, who usually partakes in comedies and has been known voicing characters in animated films like 2003’s “Finding Nemo” and 1998’s “Dr. Dolittle,” takes on a role that leaves audiences in a state of complete shock. With these performances as well as a very suspenseful storyline, "Drive" proves to be quite memorable. Henceforth, I can sincerely say:

“Drive” is an Exciting Film that is Rich in Action and Passion!

In Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s thriller, we meet a multifaceted driver, grippingly portrayed by Ryan Gosling, who works as a getaway chauffeur for criminals; who, for a price, would always wait five minutes for a certain crime to be pulled and then drive away During the day, Gosling’s character works at a garage owned by Shannon, played keenly by Bryan Cranston, who also sets up all of his daily gigs. After shooting a movie scene, Gosling’s driver goes to a grocery store to do some quick shopping. Afterwards, he sees his neighbor Irene, a single mother calmly played by Carey Mulligan, struggle with her car in the parking lot. After giving Irene and her son Benicio, played by Kaden Leos, a ride home, they start talking; and it’s obvious that Gosling’s character is starting to take a liking to her—even though he finds out that her husband is locked away in prison. Meanwhile, Bryan Cranston’s Shannon has lunch with Bernie Rose; a former movie producer-turned mobster—played cunningly by Albert Brooks. Shannon asks the mobster for $400,000 so he could buy a stock car that Gosling’s Driver could use in a NASCAR race. Albert Brooks’ Bernie Rose is doubtful of the idea, as is his burly associate Nino—played aggressively by Ron Perlman. However, after seeing Gosling’s Driver in action during a race, Albert Brooks’ Bernie Rose accepts the deal and introduces himself to the stuntman.

As time goes on, Gosling’s Driver starts to form a meaningful friendship with Carey Mulligan’s Irene and starts to get along well with Kaden Leos’ Benicio. However, Irene’s husband Standard, played by Oscar Isaac, is released from prison and wants to get back together with his family. Sometime later, however, Gosling’s character finds Standard beaten and bleeding outside in the hallway of the apartment where they live. It turns out that Irene’s husband owes money to a gangster named Cook, portrayed by James Biberi, who, will come after Irene and her son if Oscar Isaac’s character fails to rob a pawn shop. Wanting to protect the woman he adores, Gosling’s character offers to drive Standard to the pawn shop; but unfortunately, the heist goes terribly wrong; and Gosling’s Driver finds himself in more trouble than he ever expected. And as the film unfolds, it is great to see a significant amount of suspense and emotion present throughout its duration.

As you watch “Drive;” it is interesting to see how a majority of the cast’s performances are fueled by genuine dedication. Ryan Gosling gives an unwavering performance as his character; one that keeps the audience's full attention. When Ryan Gosling’s Driver falls in love with Carey Mulligan’s Irene, it is more-than-evident that he wants to be with her and remain completely loyal. As Oscar Isaac’s Standard has been away in prison, it is evident that he is incapable of being trusted. And this is confirmed when Gosling’s Driver finds out about Standard’s wrongdoings; and now, the lives of Irene and Kaden Leos’ Benicio are at risk. Thus, the only reason he accompanies Standard on his mission is to ensure the safety of Irene and Kaden Leos’ Benicio. And when t their lives are in further jeopardy following the heist, Gosling’s alter ego will do whatever he can to guarantee their protection.

And this is when Ryan Gosling gets to further enhance his performance as the Driver. He knows twhen it’s revealed that Ron Perlman’s Nino was behind the entire robbery, Ryan Gosling’s Driver knows that he has to set everything right. The only reason he takes any drastic action is that he wants to protect the lives of Carey Mulligan’s Irene and Kaden Leos’ Benicio. He wants to protect them; henceforth, he knows that he has to do whatever he could to do so. And throughout it all, Ryan Gosling’s commitment to his role never misses a beat; and he manages to keep the audience’s attention throughout the film. He enables his character to appear completely real; and he never strays from his steadfast performance. His acting works well with the gritty tone of the film; and he’s able to pull off the intensity of Hossein Amini’s screenplay. In other words, Ryan Gosling is a first-rate lead actor; thanks to his passionate performance.

While Ryan Gosling’s passionate act throughout the filmis very noteworthy, it is also important to mention Albert Brooks' strong performance as former movie producer Bernie Rose. When we meet Brooks’ character, he treats Bryan Cranston’s Shannon with disrespect; as he’s initially not interested in loaning the latter money to buy a car for Ryan Gosling’s character to drive in NASCAR races. Albert Brooks’ character speaks in an impatient manner; as he doesn’t want to lose a large sum of money in making a possibly poor manner. While it seems that his on-screen persona is just a tad argumentative, we later observe the sheer immorality of Albert Brooks' Bernie Rose.

After learning of the failed bank heist, Brooks' character, despite remaining in a non-overstated manner, emerges as a truly hostile personality. Because of this, the audience sits on the edge of their seats expect the worst for Ryan Gosling’s Driver as well as anyone else Albert Brooks’ Bernie Rose plans to go after. The actor displays significant keenness when portraying Bernie Rose; as he enables his character to appear aggressive-- even when maintaining a reserved presence. His entire performance is impeccable; and it’s great to see him assume a role that is the complete opposite of those he had played in the past; such as Jerry Peyser; the anxious podiatrist he portrayed in 2003’s “The In-Laws.” Watching Albert Brooks' character in the later portion of the film proves just how versatile he is as an actor. The amount of fervor present in the actor's portrayal of Bernie Rose keeps you attention; thus enabling Albert Brooks turn in one of the year's best performances.

Image of Albert Brooks as Bernie Rose taken from http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=A0PDoX5gQTBPvSQAACCJzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTA3cnMybzJvBHNsawNpbWc-?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3D%2522Drive%2522%2B%252B%2B%2522Albert%2BBrooks%2522%26n%3D30%26ei%3Dutf-8%26fr%3Dyfp-t-374%26tab%3Dorganic%26ri%3D1&w=4256&h=2832&imgurl=collider.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2FAlbert-Brooks-Drive-movie-image.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcollider.com%2Falbert-brooks-drive-defending-your-life-interview%2F123067%2F&size=3.9+KB&name=Albert+Brooks+Talks+DRIVE%2C+TAXI+DRIVER%2C+Improvising%2C+Future+Projects+...&p=%22Drive%22+%2B+%22Albert+Brooks%22&oid=f18b8012fcb177b5e3b8e11c9169bd54&fr2=&fr=yfp-t-374&tt=Albert%2BBrooks%2BTalks%2BDRIVE%252C%2BTAXI%2BDRIVER%252C%2BImprovising%252C%2BFuture%2BProjects%2B...&b=0&ni=72&no=1&tab=organic&ts=&sigr=12dag5meh&sigb=13ul213pt&sigi=123itbp2v&.crumb=h7WuQq.Tdu/

Along with Gosling and Brooks, other performers in “Drive” deliver acts that evoke true dedication. As Nino, Ron Perlman employs sheer forcefulness that allows his alter ego to appear intimidating whenever he’s on screen. The rough banter he shares with Albert Brooks’ Bernie Rose is enthralling; as both characters are capable of unleashing harm upon someone who wronged them. In addition, Bryan Cranston stirs up a range of emotion when portraying Shannon; as one moment he can appear calm and collected—and the next he’s begging for amnesty. What’s more, the actor does a fine job enabling his character to appear as both a traitor and protector to Ryan Gosling’s Driver; and in do so, viewers can question whether or not Shannon genuine loyalty. Thus, the audience foresees Bryan Cranston’s character to receive retribution for his actions. Henceforth, Gosling, Brooks, Perlman, and Cranston all offer riveting performances that cause the audience to hang on to their every word; not wanting to miss a moment of the action.

Unfortunately, I will say that not everyone in “Drive” delivers an enthralling performance when portraying their designated characters. For instance, Oscar Isaac’s Standard and James Birberi’s Cook both appear undersized; as it seemed that their purpose was to help move the story along. In addition, I felt that Carey Mulligan hardly bestowed true dedication when portraying Irene; as her overall performance seemed to lack significant raw human emotion. I truly wish she would have turned in a more memorable performance as Irene; as she could have done a much better job portraying her character.

Nevertheless, it has to be said that “Drive” offers great performances that evoke true human emotion. And thanks to screenwriter Hossein Amini, Ryan Gosling’s Driver and Albert Brooks’ Bernie Rose are profound; enabling the two performers to personify the film’s great characters. Every moment they are on the screen, the ambiance evokes true suspense; as you don’t know what awaits these two characters in the near future. And when you watch the characters’ confrontation, all the anticipation has lead to the film’s most engrossing sequence. You heavily speculate what their fates will eventually be; and thanks to the actors’ performances and the screenwriting, as well as Nicolas Winding Refn’s direction, the audience observes a justly absorbing get-together. You might say that this interaction is the ultimate destination for this riveting “Drive.”

Thus, “Drive” completely demonstrates how extremely passionate performances can make an action-thriller an emotional experience. And thanks to the unwavering performance by Ryan Gosling, we are treated to a protagonist that will do whatever he can to ensure the safety of those he cares about. And even though “Drive” didn’t get nominated for any Academy Awards, I’d say it’s a true champion for entertaining audiences with an enthralling story and passionate performances.

All in all, a very bad show

This may have been the absolute worst show of the season so far. Channing Tatum wasn't a very funny host at all and he hardly contributed anything memorable to the show at all.

The opening sketch was a creative idea; but the execution was weak. Bobby Moynihan's Newt Gingrich impression was very bad and it was the first of his many poor performances tonight. Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Kristen Wiig were good with what they had; but unfortunately, it was a very poor opening.

Channing Tatum's monologue was just a variant on the questions-from-the-audience monologue. Channing Tatum constantly bringing up the fact that he used to be a stripper before he was famous was annoying and his stripper moves towards the end were just an attempt to get a rise from the crowd. A very weak monologue that wasn't at all funny.

Kenan Thompsons' Cee-lo Green sketch wasn't funny at all and just seemed very rushed. Channing Tatum did an okay impression of Matthew MaCoughnahay;; but he didn't have anything to work with. Neither did Bill Hader, Vaness Bayer, and Nasim Pedrad; and the sketch wasn't funny at all.

Secret Word was presented once again; and just like its previous installments, it basically followed the same format. Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader gave good performances as their characters once again; though they didn't have much to work with. Channing Tatum's astronaut character was an interesting idea; but the execution just didn't go anywhere. The makeshift flashbacks felt tacked on as well.

Weekend Update was, for the most part, not very good. Seth Meyers' jokes weren't weren't very funny at all and it seems that he's not trying to deliver his lines in a genuine manner anymore. Bobby Moynihan's Guy Feiri impression was overexaggerated and just was an excuse to get the crowd going with the display of over-the-top food displays.

However, I did like Kristen Wiig's portrayal of Lana Del Ray. She gave a funny performance and I like seeing the writers poke fun at some of the show's previous musical guests that didn't give good performances. Wiig was good; and it was the best part of an otherwise forgettable Weekend Update.

The bar mitzvah sketch wasn't funny or entertaining at all. It didn't go anywhere at all; and Nasim Pedrad and Channing Tatum didn't make me laugh at all.

The sketch that featured Bobby Moynihan dressed as a woman was just stupid and written very poorly. Channing Tatum didn't add anything as Tom Brady and the whole segment was just very bad. The ending was especially bad.

The strip club sketch at the end of the show was just awful. Jason Sudeikis did the best he could with his role as the emcee; but the material he was given wasn't funny at all and it came off as very tasteless. The whole affair was just an excuse for the male castmembers and Channing Tatum to exhibit stripper moves; and the whole piece just felt very awkward. Just a bad way to end the show.

I did like Bon Iver's musical performances. Their mellow sound was a nice change of pace and they sounded better than Lana Del Ray.

All in all, one of the worst episodes of the season. Aside from Kristen Wiig's segment on Weekend Update, there wasn't anything entirely funny at all. Bill Hader was also good with what he had tonight; but unfortunately, other than playing the host of Secret Word, he didn;t get to star in a skech-- though he made quick but interesting appearances in the opening and the Cee-lo Green sketch. It should also be mentioned that Bobby Moynihan's annoying performances tonight have officially caused me to become tired of his antics; and I wouldn't mind if he left the show at the end of the season.

So far, 2012's episodes of SNL haven't been very good and I'm hoping that Zooey Deschennel is given better material when she hosts next week. I actually won't be live-blogging that show; as I will be going away for the weekend. But you can expect a review of the show posted when I return.

So that concludes my coverage of tonight's episode. You can all expect my next big film review posted on my blog by Monday night at the latest. So please stay tuned for that.

Thank you all for following me tonight. I enjoyed live-blogging SNL once again; despite the fact that the show was extremely weak; due to the writing, Channing Tatum's weak performance as the host, and all of Bobby Moynihan's bad acting tonight.

Thank you so much for following me once again. Good night everybody!

And that's pretty much the show

Poor ending to a poor show

Channing Tatum is just trying to get a strong reaction from the crowd

This isn't funny at all

There hasn't been one very good sketch at all tonight

I don't like this sketch at all

The writing is not funny at all. I feel bad for Sudeikis as he's being allotted with a very terrible sketch

Jason Sudeikis is trying but the material is more-than-weak

Now it's male strippers instead of female strippers

Other than that change, it's the same bacis sketch

Show's back

And now a strip club sketch. They did this type of sketch when Helen Mirren hosted in April. Jason Sudeikis played this character then as well

Commercials are up now

And then we'll get one more sketch. Hopefully it's funny

Nice performance by Bon Iver

This is a nice performance

This show hasn't been very good at all

Lots of bad writing and a host that isn't very funny. Plus very poor performances by Bobby Moynihan. And now another musical performance by Bon Iver

This isn't funny at all

Kristen Wiig has nothing to work with. Just a bunch of bad writing. And now commercials.

Show's back

with a commercial parody featuring Channing Tatum as a fitness pitchman

Bobby Moynihan has been preety bad tonight

the same can be said for a majority of this show.

That was a very bad sketch

The writers should be ashamed of themselves. But knowing them, they're bound to make that character a reoccurring one.

Show's back

With Channing Tatum playing Tom Brady. And Bobby Moynihan playing an over-the-top character

This isn't a very funny or memorable show so far

Channing Tatum hasn't done anything particularly great at all as the show's host as of now

A 22-year-old man Channing Tatum's character turned out to be

Not a hilarious sketch at all

Channing Tatum is a good dancer

But there isn't really anything funny about this sketch.

Channing Tatum dressed as a kid

A sketch with dancing. This isn't funny at all. This sketch isn't going anywhere

Show's back

This looks like an original sketch A sketch about a Bar Mitzvah.

Next sketch coming up

Not an entirely great Weekend Update

Kristen Wiig was good as always but most of Seth Meyers's jokes and Bobby Moynihan's Guy Feiri impression were weak.

Nice segment

Kristen Wiig gave a good performance and it's nice seeing SNL poke fun at itself

Kristen Wiig is giving a good performance

I like that the writers are acknowledging weak performances from the show's past.

Kristen Wiig as Lana Del Ray

They are actually acknowledging her extremely weak performance on the show three weeks.

Some of Seth's jokes are okay

but they are not very funny

This isn't anything special at all

The sgement is just an excuse to present over-the-top food dishes

Bobby Moynihan as Guy Fieri

He's impersonated him before. Moynhihan offers an enthusiastic performance but the material isn't great

Weak jokes to start off the segment

Weak writing once again

Weekend Update with Seth Meyers

Commercials

Nice performance by Bon Iver

This must be a new band

I would like to hear more from them

I like the lead singer's vocal performance

It's good to see a mellow band perform on the show for a change. Every now and then it's good to relax when listening to a musical performance on SNL

This band has a nice mellow sound

Bon Iver is now performing

I haven't heard this band's music until now

Musical guest is coming up

Not a great show at all so far

We've seen some good performances; but the sketches haven't been extremely funny

Good performances but very subpar writing

And now....commercials

The writing isn't entirely great as always

They seem to be using a lot of sex jokes tonight

Bill Hader is funny as always as the host

Wig gives a good performance but the sketch is marred by by bad writing

Channing Tatum is giving an alright performance however

Kristen Wiig is funny as always but the sketch follows the same format as always

Channing Tatum as an astronaut that's riding the success of his space mission

This is really silly

We are back with Secret Word

which was last done this past November with Emma Stone. I guess that tonight's show is going to be filled with reoccurring sketches

Channing tatum and Jonah Hill starring in a big-screen adaptation of 21 Jump Street

That's... interesting

That was an abrupt ending

I'm looking forward to seeing Zooey Deschenel host next week,

The interplay between the performers are good

But this sketch is featuring humor that is borderline juvenile

I like seeing Jay Pharoah get more exposure on the show

This looks like it could be a good sketch

I like seeing a Superbowl related sketch

Andy Samberg is annoying as the announcer

This isn't funny. It's a forced attempt to spoof an ad

Downtown Abbey being aired on Spike-TV

Very over-the-top and forced commercial spoof.

Very weak sketch

Not a great first sketch of the night

Another excuse for Channing Tatum to get the lades in the crowd worked up

This isn't funny at all

I'm not really crazy about this sketch

Bill Hader as Colonel Nasty. He played this character when the sketch debuted in November. His performance is good but the writing is subpar

This sketch isn't that great

Channing Tatum's Matthew Mcoughnahay impression is alright

I'm getting tired of Kenan Thompson

His Cee-lo Green impression is alright though

They first did this sketch when Charlie Day hosted in November.

Not very great at all

That was unexpected

This is a very silly monologue

Not very good. And now Channing is just trying to cater to the women in the audience with his stripper moves.

This is a varient of the host takes questions from the audience monologue

Are we going to get alot of stripping jokes tonight?

I REALLY hope not

I can't believe that he used to be a stripper before his acting career

I hope that Channing Tatum is funny

Featured Player Paul Brittain has Left the show

Must have left to pursue other careers. Good luck to him

I hope this show is good

Very intresting and original opening

Kristen Wiig is funny as always

Moynihan's impression of Newt Gingrich is very weak

That was a bad joke

His impression of Romney is always good

Kenan as Herman Cain again

This is a creative opening

Coming Soon to My Blog: February 2012

Happy February everybody! It's the first day of a new month; and I'm getting ready to have a very busy few weeks. Throughout this month, I plan on posting the following:

1. More film reviews. In the next few weeks, I plan on posting in-depth critiques of Academy Award Nominated films as well as movies that weren't granted the honor. I am very exciting to be posting some reviews; and you can all expect one posted by Monday night at the latest.

2. More Coverage of "Saturday Night Live." NBC's long-running sketch comedy program will return from a brief hiatus with an all-new episode this week; which will be hosted by Channing Tatum. I plan on live-blogging this week's episode; commenting on the writing, performances, and other matters. I will also either be live-blogging or writing a thorough review of the remaining episodes; which will air on February 11 and February 18 respectfully. So be on the look out for this as well.

3. Live-Blogging coverage of the 84th Academy Awards. On February 26, I will be commenting on this year's ceremony as it broadcasts; offering my opinions on which performer is winning, who is losing, as well as other matters. I am very excited about covering this year's ceremony; and I'm hoping that Billy Crystal will host a memorable event,

So that's what I have planned for this month; and I'm planning to do more as well. So stay tuned. The next few weeks are going to be very exciting. Thank you all and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment!
