From the Mind of Nate: My Season Finale Review of Season Thirty-Eight of "Saturday Night Live" as well as My Overall Opinion on the Season as a Whole

Well, Season Thirty-Eight of NBC's “Saturday Night Live” has come to an end. On May 18th, 2013, Ben Affleck celebrated his fifth hosting stint on the long-running variety show as well as the end of the season. It was a bittersweet finale though. Despite some not-so-great writing in certain areas, the episode was more highlighted by the fact that it was the last for long-time castmembers Fred Armisen and Bill Hader; the latter of whom will leave a significant void after making viewers laugh for eight years through hilarious impersonations and characters. As previously reported, however, it has been stated in reports that fellow longtime castmember Jason Sudeikis has not yet decided whether or not he'll be departing the show. Henceforth, there is a chance he could be back for the new season. This would be very beneficial to the long-running sketch comedy show; seeing that Sudeikis has been a reliable performer who has been able to improve the quality of sketches through his charismatic delivery and penchant for playing any kind of role; whether it be a comical character or even a likable straightman. Surely this episode would be important to watch. Nevertheless, the season finale of this season needed to be memorable; considering the departing castmembers. Fortunately, despite weak writing, we got just that.

Cold Opening- “Politic Nation with Al Sharpton”

I've never been a big fan if these reoccurring sketches; mainly because the primary joke always revolves around Al Sharpton's, played by longtime castmember Kenan Thompson, mispronunciation of words. Tonight's installment was basically the same thing as previous installments. Thompson did the best he could with the material, however, and his delivery helped improve the quality of the sketch. Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis gave humorous performances as their characters, though they didn't have much to work with. In addition, I was a little disappointed to see that neither Sudeikis or Hader got to open the show by saying “Live From New York...”; considering that the latter had publicly announced that tonight's show would be his last. Despite the good performances by Thompson. Hader, and Sudeikis, this opening turned out, unfortunately, nothing special.

Monologue- Ben Affleck

I always enjoy it when Ben Affleck hosts the long-running sketch comedy show, and I was glad to see him acknowledge the '5-Timers Club'; considering that he is now a member. However, I was wondering if they would be doing the whole '5- Timers Club' monologue again; considering that we just saw Justin Timberlake get the royal treatment this past March. Bobby Moynihan was pretty funny here; with him being the one to bare the news that they couldn't do the whole star-studded affair; seeing that everyone was there for Timberlake. I got a laugh out of Moynihan wearing the 5-Timers shirt and faintly tossing confetti into the air. The second half of the monologue was alright; with Affleck's real-life wife Jennifer Garner showing up to prove that there are no problems in their marriage; as people thought that the pair were experiencing marital problems when Affleck failed to mention her when accepting the Academy Award for “Argo.” The bit went on a bit too long; though I have to commend Affleck and Garner for going along with the bit.

Image of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/12/12umono.phtml

Sketch-- “Bengo F@@k Yourself”

This wasn't a bad sketch. Fred Armisen gave a good performance as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; who was presenting Iran's answer to Ben Affleck's “Argo”; which happened to be of the Iranian President portraying the actor pitching the idea for the film to a studio. Armisen's over-the-top fake Boston accent was very funny; as was Bill Hader's Iranian character impersonating a Hollywood executive. Ben Affleck was also very funny, with him saying that he wanted to help out so he could make a film worse than “Gigli.” Watching Affleck portray a crewmember interacting with Armisen's “impersonation” was humorous and it just goes to show just how the Hollywood actor is able to make fun of himself in completely good fun. “Saturday Night Live” needs more hosts like Ben Affleck who have no problem cutting loose in sketches.

Sketch- Depression Scene

This was a creative sketch that Bill Hader carried very well. He is always able to pull off that old timey matter of speaking of the 1930s-1950s. All the performances in this sketch were very good; including Ben Affleck playing a businessman offering a “desperate” 'Edward Bing', played by Hader, a job at a construction company-- despite the latter not wanting to come in to work before 10:00am. The back and forth between
Hader and Affleck was great and they possessed good chemistry. In addition, Catsmember Kate McKinnon was good as 'Prima Donna',; a woman that was preseumed by Affleck's character to be the wife of Hader's character. The sketch played out well and the end was very good. Overall, a very creative and well-written sketch.

Sketch: New Beginnings Summer Camp

I am not a fan of sketches that rely on jokes aimed at homosexuality, To me, it's a crutch the writers use to get easy laughs out of the audience. That being said, this wasn't terrible. Ben Affleck gave a solid performance as the camp counselor working at a Christian summer camp. Affleck dis what he could with the weak material; though the writing wasn't very funny. Castmember Taran Killam provided a couple chuckles with his sudden fan dance. However, this sketch just wasn't that reat.

Sketch: "Weekend Update with Seth Meyers"

Well, here we go. The final “Weekend Update” of Season Thirty-Eight of “Saturday Night Live.” Where to begin? First, I was happy to see Amy Poehler return for the season finale and engage in a new “Really??” segment with Seth Meyers; who going to be hosting “Late Night” starting next February when Jimmy Fallon goes on to host “The Tonight Show.” The “Really??” segment for this episode wasn't great, but I can't deny the fact that Meyers and Poehler have good chemistry. Their little exchanges between jokes were amusing and a good reminder of how enjoyabletheir years anchoring “Weekend Update” were.

And now we came to Bill Hader's final appearance on “Weekend Update” as his popular reoccurring character “Stefon” before leaving the “Saturday Night Live”. First, I must say that I liked the leering response Hader's character made when meeting Amy Poehler for the first time. It's interesting to note this, because Hader never played “Stefon” when she was anchoring “Weekend Update” with Seth Meyers. I enjoyed seeing Hader's character give one more bizarre nightclub description; particularly when he said that the club in question (which the character referred to as “Pants”) had, among the attractions listed, sling and mesh bladder implants as well as the table from “Charlie Rose.” Hader's performance as the character was still hilarious as usual; though I was unprepared for the surprises that followed.

First of all, I knew things were going to take an interesting turn when Hader's “Stefon” left in a huff after having enough of Seth Meyers wanting to hear more appropriate locations for families to visit in the city. And I then had a feeling we were in for something bit when Hader's “Stefon” said he was getting married. Things got even more intriguing when Meyers, in a clearly humorous manner, started crying at the possible thought of losing “Stefon” forever; leading to Amy Poehler to encourage him to go after him.

What followed now, with credit to the “Saturday Night Live” writing staff, was a humorous parody of Dustin Hoffman's 1967 film “The Graduate”; as Seth Meyers chases after “Stefon” to a lavish church where, in a pre-taped segment, Bill Hader's character was about to be married to Television Personality Anderson Cooper; in a surprise cameo. But what was even more hilarious was that most people in attendance were various characters that Hader's “Stefon” has identified as attending the various nightclubs he's described over the past few years!!! Among the outrageously-hilarious characters included “Human Traffic Cones”, “Fat Urkles,” “Gerfs” (aka “German Smurfs”), and “Puppets in Disguise” (in the form of “Alf” in a trench coat and sunglasses). The bit got even more hilarious as Seth Meyers called after “Stefon”; who responded by screaming “Seth!!!” in an extremely feminine voice). The whole thing got me laughing out loud in my chair; as I saw even more bizarre characters; including “Menorah the Explorer” and “DJ Baby Bok Choy”; who blocked off an angry mob as Seth Meyers and “Stefon” escaped together. The whole thing led up to the pair returning live to the studio; where Amy Poehler and all the “Weekend Update” characters from Seth Meyers' tenure as anchor stood throwing rice at the happy couple. The whole thing was a hilarious and beautiful way to bid farewell to Bill Hader; who, as I stated before, will be greatly missed from “Saturday night Live.”

I am also wondering if this particular installment of “Weekend Update” was meant to serve as Seth Meyers' last; considering that he's going to be assuming hosting “Late Night”. I mean, Amy Poehler was back and we got all the characters from Meyers' time on Update. This edition could clearly serve as Seth Meyers' departure from “Weekend Update”; which leaves the question.... “Who will be the next 'Weekend Update' anchor?” I guess we'll just have to wait and see. All in all, a great way to end “Weekend Update” for the season as well as a great send-off for Bill Hader!

Sketch: Greg's Funeral

Now this was a sketch that was quite funny. Ben Affleck gave a very humorous performance as the “uncle” of the deceased Greg; a man greatly disliked by members of his family-- played by members of the cast. Affleck's character kept on defending his nephew, who he kept insisting he was dead, despite the fact that he was indeed Greg and that he faked his death. All the castmembers gave humorous performances the members of Greg's family; particularly Kate McKinnon, who played his angry ex-wife, and Castmember Taran Killam; whp portrayed his father's son-- going on a rant on why he clearly knows that his father his alive and faked his death. In addition, Jason Sudeikis gave a good performance as the funeral director; who earnestly tried to keep the event moving along and give everyone in attendance a chance to talk. Affleck was hilarious throughout the sketch with his over-the-top fake Mexican accent-- as he claimed he was from Mexico-- and that was why noone has heard of him before. This was a very humorous sketch.

Sketch: Hermes Handbags

I have grown tired of these sketches that feature Castmembers Vanessa Bayer and Cecily Strong as two porn stars advertising different products. Despite the decent performances from Strong and Bayer, their dialogue just came off as very ridiculous and very forced. Ben Affleck's character was the only part of this I laughed at, and the actor was funny; especially when he kept swinging into frame. Simply put, this was basically just a rehash of the first two installments.

Sketch: Shana's Engagement

This was basically just a one-note sketch that, despite good performances, it just dragged on a bit too long. That being said, Ben Affleck, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen were funny as their tough-guy police officers getting emotional at a daughter's engagement party. Affleck, Armisen, and Hader did well with their New Jersey accents, though the obvious joke got old quick. Bobby Moynihan was humorous as well as the grandfather; though I wish his bit went on a bit longer. Jason Sudeikis' appearance at eh end as the police Sergent was humorous as well; but his inclusion felt a bit rushed as well. Good performances by all, even though the joke of all them getting more emotional as things went on went on a bit too long.

Sketch: Ian Rubbish and The Bizarros

Now this was a classy send-off for Fred Armisen. First of all, I was happy to see Armisen reprise his “Ian Rubbish” character from the “History of Punk” short film from the Vince Vaughn show from this past April. It's clear that Fred Armisen is a fan of British Punk Rock, and he and Bill Hader do well with their English accents. The song they performed (“It's a Lovely Day”) along with Jason Sudeikis on drums and Taran Killam on guitar was very catchy as well as very sentimental. You could tell that Fred Armisen is going to miss being on the show; and with all do respect, he was a good sketch comedy performers-- despite his lackluster impression of Barack Obama; which he did on the show from February 2008 to May 2012 as well as starring in the overused reoccurring sketch “The Californians.” The appearances of musicians Steve Jones, J Mascis, Kim Gordon, Aimee Mann, and Michael Penn as well as Armisen's “Portlandia” co-star Carrie Brownstein were nice touches and the whole performance was very enjoyable. Lastly, it was nice to see Bill Hader and Fred Armisen perform together on stage one last time before they go their separate ways. All in all, a good farewell for Armisen and even Hader as well as a nice way to close the 2012-2013 season of “Saturday Night Live.”

Image of Fred Armisen as "Ian Rubbish" taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/12/12urubbish.phtml

And that's the show. Ben Affleck did a fine job as host; though I'm glad he took a step back to allow Bill Hader and Fred Armisen to have their farewells. And despite the weak writing of some of the sketches, memorable performances of the cast and Affleck made the night enjoyable and memorable. As for Musical Guest Kanye West, I have nothing to say. His songs weren't catchy and all and, in all honesty, he just sounded angry when he was performing; constantly screaming into his microphone when singing.

All in all, an enjoyable season finale and a wonderful fare well for Bill Hader and Fred Armisen.

Well, that concludes the 2012-2013 season of “Saturday night Live”. And what an uneven season this was. True, longtime castmembers Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg were gone, but veteran performers Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis were still around. Both performers continued to provide laughs for the audience; with Hader continuously showcasing top-notch impressions of well-known public figures and Sudeikis regularly turning in engaging comedic performances in sketches-- whether it be a humorous straightman to comedic characters played by hosts like Melissa McCarthy and Zach Galifianakis-- or even a humorous character-- such as a laid-back security guard to Guest Host Justin Bieber that introduced a group of body-doubles that bared hardly any resemblance to the popular musician during an episode that aired February 9th of this year. I will also say that, despite the ridiculousness of the reoccurring sketch “The Californians”, longtime castmember Fred Armisen, who will be leaving this year, did manage to turn in memorable performances as fictional British Punk Rock Singer Ian Rubbish; who first appeared this past April in a pre-taped short film that aired on April 13th that featured a profile on the character's fondness for the late Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. All three veteran performers have done what they could with the material they were given; and some of the best moments of the season came from them.

Image of Bill Hader as Clint Eastwood taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/12/12aeastwood.phtml

I will say that some of the newer performers have kept my attention throughout the season. For example, Jay Pharoah, who first joined the cast as a featured player back in September 2010, has done quite well taking over the important impression of President Barack Obama from Fred Armisen. Pharoah has managed to mimic the President's manner of speaking; though, unfortunately, the sketch comedy program's writers haven't created very memorable sketches for the three-year- castmember; and I'm hoping he gets better sketches that allow him to showcase his impression. I will also say that three-year castmember Taran Killam has done very well in sketches; particularly in a piece where he played the obnoxious older brother of a young woman, played by castmember Nasim Pedrad, who was dating a shy young man; played by host Justin Bieber. When Bieber's character accidentally combined the words “glad” and “nice” into a single word (“glice”), Killam's character continuously ribbed the young man on his flaw in over-the-top ways. Even though the sketch went on a bit too long, Killam's performance was humorous; mainly due to his the comical tone of his voice and fast-paced body movements. Killam also turned in a comical performance as an audience member who humored a hypnotist, played by guest host Joseph Gordon-Levitt, by pretending to go into a deep trance. Throughout the sketch, Killam's character engaged in activities like pretending to be a dinosaur as well as “revealing” a “personal secret” about his wife, played by castmember Vanessa Bayer. Though the sketch was a little ridiculous at times, Killam's performance was humorous.

Image of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Hypnotist "Tommy Bergamont" and Taran Killam as "Curtis" taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/12/12bhypnotist.phtml

I will also say that some of the female castmembers have provided laughs'; particularly featured player Kate McKinnon; who managed to rise above some of her fellow performers when providing some truly comic performance. One such sketch, which took place on April 3rd, McKinnon played a barfly who kept hitting on a fellow patron; played by guest host and actor-comedian Louis C.K. The two performers had great chemistry entire thing kept escalating until both performers engaged in a prolonged make-out session that went on even after they left the bar they were drinking at. The sketch was very funny due to the performances of McKinnon and Louis C.K.; and even though the sketch was executed on April 13th,the actress' performance and chemistry with guest host Vince Vaughn made the segment humorous once again. I look forward to seeing McKinnon offer more humorous performances next season. In short terms, the cast has done what they could throughout the season; despite the weak writing that is significantly affecting the show.

While the performances of the “Saturday Night Live” cast have been greatly important in regards to the season as a whole, I do want to mention that certain hosts have done their fare share to improve the quality of the show as a whole. A good amount of the hosts this have in fact been on the show before; some of which made triumphant returns, while some others didn't. For instance, Justin Timberlake, who celebrated his fifth hosting stint on March 9th, was able to greatly improve the quality of the show through his performances and charisma. For instance, Timberlake managed to salvage his signature reoccurring sketch, which happens to be his well-known “dancing mascot” character, and make it watchable; thanks in large part to his enthusiastic performance. Dressed as a vegan cake, Timberlake engaged in humorous banter with castmember Bobby Moynihan; who was playing the hapless vendor for Sausage Depo. The exchanges between the two performer were humorous; and the segment was also highlighted by a fun spoof of the popular “Harlem Shake” viral videos. It should also be mentioned that Timberlake went on to being one of this season's best musical guests as well; as his performance of his hit song “Suit & Tie” that featured a surprise appearance of well-known rapper Jay-Z. It was also very appropriate for Timberlake to receive the red carpet treatment when commemorating his fifth hosting stint with the resurfacing of the '5-Timers Club'; complete with special appearances from fellow multi-time hosts-- such as Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, and Former Castmember Chevy Chase. Surely Justin Timberlake's show went on to be possibly the best of the season.

Image of Candance Bergen, Justin Timberlake, Tom Hanks, and Alec Baldwin taken from http://snl.jt.org/detail.php?i=201303092

As for other returning hosts, I was happy to see Fellow Former Castmember Martin Short return to host as well. Emceeing the December 15th episode, provided enthusiastic performances alongside the cast. Particularly with Bill Hader, who, in one sketch, played a British gynecologist who received a visit from a representative for the Royal Family, played by Short, and became ever more confused by the unorthodox requirements for performing Kate Middleton's pregnancy. Martin Short and Bill Hader had great chemistry and the sketch played out flawlessly. Short continued to perform well thoughout the show; including during a piece where he and Fred Armisen played old friends who meet up at Restoration Hardware and reminisced about strange activities they engaged in years ago. The sketch was quite humorous and was also a nice break from the type of over-the-top sketches that take place in the last half hour of various episodes this season. The whole episode was fun and is the second best show of the season.

While Martin Short and Justin Timberlake were among the best returning hosts of the season, some others could be considered not so lucky. Melissa McCarthy, who hosted April 6th, failed to recapture the glory of her previous hosting stint from the previous season. While the sketches from her first show featured a good amount of fun performances from the cast, McCarthy's show this season suffered due to the fact that every character she played was basically the same. Thanks in large part to the weak writing, every one of her characters had the same basic personality; causing them all to blend together. In addition, the castmembers, instead of getting a lot to do, were mainly relegated to simply reacting to the antics of McCarthy's characters. All in all, it was just a poorly written episode. Another returning host who failed to turn in memorable performances was Jamie Foxx; who first hosted back on January 8th, 2000. In his December 8th, 2012 show, Foxx turned in some not-so enjoyable performances; particularly during his monologue, in which he sang a rather unengaging song and went on to ask the question “How black is that?” regarding different topics. For most of the show, Foxx imparted some uninspired acting that wasn't at all funny; particularly during a game show sketch where he played a rather rude emcee who kept referring to his contestant as “Bitches”. The sketch wasn't funny at all and it basically relied on the same joke; a crutch the “Saturday Night Live” writers use all the time when crafting sketches. Despite a humorous performance as the bailiff in the first ever “Maine Justice” sketch, Jamie Foxx just came off as being a rather forgettable host. Hopefully, next season we get hosts who can successfully pull off memorable hosting stints.

We also got a couple of memorable performances from from some celebrities that went on to be good first-time hosts. For instance, “Family Guy” Creator Seth MacFarlane, got the ball rolling during the season premier; which aired September 15th of this past year. Throughout the show, MacFarlane demonstrated his fine impression skills when performing a musical number for his monologue; which included imitations of Michael J. Fox as “Marty McFly” (from “Back to the Future”), classic cartoon character “Droopy Dog”, and even “Kermit the Frog.” MacFarlane also shined in a particular sketch featuring castmember Nasim Pedrad; which centered on a blind date at a restaurant in a mall. Throughout the sketch, MacFarlane and Pedrad demonstrated their ability to do different voices; and they both had keen chemistry. MacFarlane did very well throughout the show; being able to play characters as well as straightmen in sketches. His overall performance eventually led him to host this past year's Academy Awards, and I wouldn't mind seeing him appear on “Saturday night Live” again.

Another first-time host that did well was actor-comedian Louis C.K.; who was able to portray both straightmen as well as a comical character in a sketch. One such segment saw Louis C.K. Playing a clerk at a hotel who was listing the bizarre charges a visiting businessman, played by Bobby Moynihan, following a short stay. The interactions between Louis C.K. And Moynihan got more humorous as the sketch went on; particularly as the list of charges on more and more bizarre. Just the casual manner that Louis C.K. spoke in was enough to make me laugh; as he basically listed every charge much to the chagrin of Moynihan's character, Like Seth MacFarlane, I would enjoy seeing Louis C.K. Host a second time.

Image of Nasim Pedrad and Seth MacFarlane taken from http://snl.jt.org/detail.php?i=2012091512

But while there were first-time hosts I would enjoy seeing appear on the show again, there are a couple that I wasn't too fond of. For instance, on January 26th of this year, Musician-Television personality Adam Levine hosted for his first time, and throughout the whole night, you could tell he was reading the cue cards. Furthermore, Levine hardly showed any genuine enthusiasm in the sketches, and he did not have good chemistry with the “Saturday Night Live” cast. Some sketches even ended a bit too abruptly as well; including a segment that involved Levine interacting with various musicians, played by members of the cast, at a bar; eventually leading to what was supposed to be a brawl, but instead just fizzled out by the conclusion without any real climax. Another first-time host that failed to impress for the most part was Jeremy Renner; who, for some of the evening's sketches, kept stumbling over his lines. In addition, when playing the piano during his monologue, Renner appeared uncomfortable on stage; even at one point saying the phrase “why am I doing this?” You could tell he was feeling awkward the whole time, and he hardly seemed to be giving it his all; particularly in an installment of the reoccurring sketch “The Californians”-- as he failed to properly speak in the comical manner of speaking his fellow performers were engaging. Aside from the performances of the cast during the show, Jeremy Renner just didn't work out as a comedic performer, and I'm not even sure if I could see him return to the show. Thus, I really hope that next season feature some first-time hosts that deliver sharp comedic performances that truly improve any lackluster sketches.

So who knows how the upcoming season will go. With the announced departures of Fred Armisen and Bill Hader; there will be a significant void left on the show; one that will clearly stand out due to the absence of the latter performer. However, it is unknown if Jason Sudeikis will be coming back; as stated before. If he sticks around for the next season, it will be a good thing; mainly because he would obviously get more screentime in sketches. With the rest of the cast hopefully returning, I will give the start of Season Thirty-Nine a fair chance to be funny. However, if the show isn't very memorable or funny at all, I might be thinking twice about live-blogging the entire season. We'll see what happens in September.

This is a classy send-off for Fred Armisen

I guess this will be Fred Armisen's send-off

Bill Hader's in this too.  So this will prbably be his also.

One last musical performance by Fred .  He is a good  musical performer.

we are back

I'm guessing we'll get one more sketch tonight

Good to see Bill Hader starring in another sketch

This is a decent sketch so far,  Affleck and Hader have been great together tonight.   All the performances in this sketch have been very good.  The writing isn't great but the cast and Affleck are making everything better.

Sudeikis is hilarious as his character as well.

That was a good ending to that sketch.

Commercials are on now

Good to see Bill Hader starring in another sketch

This is a decent sketch so far,  Affleck and Hader have been great together tonight.

Next sketch should be coming up next

This rather early for Kanye's second performance

I'm making a slight guess that they'll be another send-off coming up.

This performance isn't great all.  I feel like Kanye is just yelling his lyrics.

Kanye West is coming up next

Affleck's performance in this sketch is the best one out of the three

This sketch wasn't great at all.

Now, commercials

Affleck has been the funniest part of this sketch so far

The writing isn't great in these sketches at all

These characters again!

Cecily Strong and Vanessa Bayer last played these characters when Timberlake hosted this past March.  This sketch is basically the same thing every time.

Only the show's host plays a different character each time.

We are back with the next sketch

Next sketch is coming up

Somewhat surprising ending to the sketch

All the performances were very good.

Commercials are on now

The performances in this sketch are all good

Everyone is improving the writing of the sketch with their performances

Jason Sudeikis is a good straightman in this sketch

Affleck is doing well with his character

This is an interesting sketch so far

The writing is alright,   The performances are good too.

We are back with the next sketch

Next sketch is coming up

Seth Meyers is getting choked up. This is GREAT!!!

This is a GREAT send-off for Stefon!!! "gREAT PARODY of "The Graduate" and I love how the wedding is attended by the type of guests that wpould go to Stefon's night clubs.  All  the various Update characters that appeared when Seth did update.

I wonder if this was meant to be Seth Meyers' final Update.  I wonder if he's leaving too.  Boy, SNL is going to be COMPLETELY DIFFERENT next season.

Bill Hader is always GREAT as this character

Stefon has never been on when Amy Poehler's been anchoring Update

I'm REALLY going to miss seeing Bill Hader play Stefon on Update

Here we go.....

Stefon!!!!!!

Seth Meyers works better on "Weekend Update" with a co-anchor then when he does it himself

I hope he does well with hosting "Late Night"

They always had good chemistry together

Their performances improve the quality of the material.  And I'm glad she's staying for the rest of the segment.

Seth and Amy Poehler are always good together

I'm glad she's back for the season finale

Seth Meyers' jokes tonight are alright, though they aren't great

Amy Phoehler!!!!  Good to see her back

And now, "Weekend Update"

"Weekend Update" is coming up next

Commercials are on now

Aside from the visual effects, this performance is nothing memorable

This song of his seems pretty generic. It sounds like some of previous ones

He's not my favorite musician at all

And now, Kanye West.

I'm not a big fan of his music, but I will say his theatrics are pretty interesting

What a rushed and abrupt ending that was

This show hasbeen alright so far, but not great.  Affleck is doing whatever he can with the weak material.

Oh great. Man-on-man kissing

Another tired SNL joke.  This sketch isn't that great

Ben Affleck is doing what he can with the material

I hope this sketch is good

I'm tired of "Saturday Night Live"'s habit of relying on homosexual humor for easy laiughs.

We are back!!!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Hader and Affleck are doing well with their 1930's accents

The writing is in this sketch is good.  This is a good one

I'm glad Bill Hader is getting alot of screentime for his last show

He and Affleck are interactin well in this sketch

Not a terrible ad spoof

Commercial spoof about Homosexual Summer weddings

Bill Hader is a GREAT physical comedian as well as impressionist

Iran's Answer to Affleck's "Argo"

This is alright.  Ben Affleck paying the soundman.

It looks like he was about to lose it a lto when interacting with Armisen as Affleck

Affleck is a good sport in this sketch too

We are back!

First sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

This isn't a bad monologue

Affleck is a good sport as usual during this monologue

Jennifer Garner!!!

I wasn't sure if they would go all out for Affleck

Considering that Timberlake had a special opening just two months ago.

Happy 5th Hosting Stint, Ben Affleck!!!

Good to see you back!

I'm not a big fan of Kanye West

That was a good little exchange

That wasn't a great opening at all.  I hope the rest of the show is better.

Bill Hader also! He, Sudeikis, and Thompson are doing what they could with the materiel

This opening isn't that funny so far

In a way, I wish they would do a more special opening for the season finale

Good to see Jason Sudeikis in the cold opening for his final show

Kenan Thompson as Rev. Al Sharpton

It's a parody of this cable news talk show

A "That's Nater-Tainment!" Special Report: Tonight is the Season Finale of "Season Thirty-Eight of "Saturday Night Live"

Well, tonight's the night. After twenty episodes, the thirty-eighth season of “Saturday Night Live” comes to an end with Ben Affleck returning to host the late-night program for his fifth time. Affleck, who won an Academy Award this past February for the 2012 critically-acclaimed film “Argo”; which he directed. I am happy that Affleck is hosting tonight's season finale; as he's been a reliable host in the past; always giving a good performance. In previous shows, Affleck has impersonated political commentator James Carville as well as Keith Olberman; as seen when hosting on November 1st, 2008 in a memorable parody of the television personality's MSNBC political commentary program; during which Affleck 's portrayal kept interrupting his guests as well as giving a lengthy statement regarding his apartment building strict 'No Pets' policy. I remember Affleck trying to hold back his laughter during the sketch; as he tried to stray from breaking character. I remember that for the skit's remaining four-five minutes, it was just Affleck alone on screen; keeping the viewers' attention through his hilarious performance.

Image of Ben Affleck as Keith Olberman taken from http://snl.jt.org/imp.php?i=2710

In short terms, I am happy to see Ben Affleck return to host the season finale of a very inconsistent season that has been significantly affected by poor writing. Hopefully, Ben Affleck does everything he can to improve the quality of the sketches; as I have a feeling that the writing will not be stellar. Also, it should be mentioned that Affleck is now becoming a member of the late-night variety program's iconic '5-Timers Club'; so I'm wondering if well see a possible cameo from either Steve Martin or Alec Baldwin, or even Justin Timberlake, who joined the exclusive club this past March. It should also be mentioned that Affleck will be joined by Kanye West; who will coincidentally be serving as the program's designated musical guest for his fifth time as well. No matter what happens, I'm truly hoping for a memorable finale to close a rather inconsistent season.

It should also be mentioned that tonight's season finale will mark the end of an era. After this week's show, veteran castmembers Fred Armisen, Jason Sudeikis and Bill Hader will all be departing. This is very important to consider; considering that all three castmember have been with the show for over seven years. In fact, Fred Armisen's tenure on the show just happens to be the longest them; considering that he's been on the show since October 5th, 2002! He's been a castmember on the show for ELEVEN years!! That's actually coming one year short of Seth Meyers' tenure; who has been with the show since September 29th, 2001. I haven't been fond of Armisen's work on the show for the past few years;seeing as he's main contributions have been either starring in the somehow popular reoccurring sketch “The Californians” or bestowing a bland portrayal of President Barack Obama; which he's done on the show since February 23rd, 2008 (half-way through the show's thirty-third season) up until the end of season thirty-seven. I remember Armisen's portrayal lacking; considering that he hardly ever truly got a great hold of the President's manner of speaking and most of his impression's appearances took the tired form of speaking directly into the camera and going on long speeches. I also remember Armisen's impression devoid of much energy; causing most of his performances to be quite unmemorable. I will say, however, Armisen's earlier years on the show were quite interesting; as he brought forward more unique reoccurring characters; that he would often perform as on “Weekend Update.” Such characters included his Native American comedian “Billy Smith,” political humorist “Nicholas Fehn,” and Venezuelan Entertainer “Ferecito”; who was later r spun off into a short-lived reoccurring talk show sketch “Show Biz Grande Explosion!.” When playing these characters, Armisen's performances were much active more genuinely funnier than any of the characters he plays now; which just rely on repetition and tired premises. In short terms, Fred Armisen would probably considered one of those “Saturday Night Live” castmembers who should have left at the top of their game rather than staying on too long; which was unfortunately the path he chose.

Image of Fred Armisen as "Ferecito" taken from http://snl.jt.org/char.php?i=585

While I'm not unhappy to see Fred Armisen leave, I am disappointed to see Jason Sudeikis and Bill Hader depart the show. Sudeikis, who has been a castmember on the show since May 7th, 2005, has proven to be a very reliable sketch comedy performer on the show; improving the quality of the sketches thanks in large part to his genuine comedic energy and likability. Throughout his tenure on the show, Jason Sudeikis would always bring forward enjoyable performances as well as keen chemistry with his fellow castmembers and the host of an episode. One of my favorite performances from Jason Sudeikis actually took place this past December in a sketch called “Maine Justice.” Playing a southern judge presiding over a Maine courtroom inexplicably filled with New Orleans transplants, Sudeikis spoke in a comically over-the-top Cajun accent and bestowed an enthusiastic performance that kept the audience laughing. His performance was enough to even get Guest Host Jamie Foxx, who was playing the court's resident bailiff, to slightly break into two laughs. Another fun sketch I remember took place on November 5th 2011, when he played a straight-faced police officer to a detective, played by Guest Host Charlie Day, who continuously claimed that he was unaware of different aspects of pop culture. Watching the pair interact during the final sketch of the night was fun; particularly when Sudeikis would engage in a state of sheer comedic disbelief upon hearing that Day's character would continuously deny that he was unaware of whatever he was talking about. In short terms, no matter the role, Jason Sudeikis was able to bring forward true comedic energy; thus guaranteeing a memorable performance. I'm going to be sad to see him leave.

Image of Jason Sudeikis as "Judge Marshall T. Boudreaux" and Jamie Foxx as "Bailiff Jessup" in "Maine Justice" taken from http://snl.jt.org/detail.php?i=2012120810

While Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis have done very well with their fair share of sketches and characters throughout the tenure as castmembers, I have to say that, in all honesty, “Saturday Night Live” is going to suffer a major departure following tonight's show. I am talking about the one-and-only comedic talent known as Bill Hader; who, after first appearing on the show on October 1st, 2005, is leaving after eight laugh-filled years. Simply put, Bill Hader has been a one-man comedy factory on “Saturday Night Live.” Whether it be playing a comedic character, the designated straight-man of a sketch, or providing the audience with one of his hilarious-yet-spot-on impressions of celebrities. Hader made every sketch work; thanks in large part to his hilarious performances. Whenever impersonating someone, Bill Hader would would have the voice down pact. One of my favorite impressions by Hader happened to be that of Clint Eastwood; which was most remarkably exhibited in commercial spoofs for Chrysler; during which, the Actor-Director would get sidetracked and go on long-winded rants about China, the 2012 Presidential Election, and other topics. Watching Hader capture Eastwood's voice perfectly was great and was elevated further by various sight gags; particularly the sight of the height of his pants getting higher and higher. The commercial spoofs were hilarious and a perfect example of how Hader could take a celebrity impression and execute an entire comedic sketch around it. Other impressions of Hader's includes Republican Party Presidential Candidate, Rick Perry, Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award Winner Alan Alda, and Actor Al Pacino; that latter of which was exhibited in a commercial parody during the April 13th show; in which the Hollywood actor portrayed the actor playing the title role in different upcoming biopics of accused murderers. In addition, Bill Hader would always enjoyable when it came to playing reoccurring characters; with the most popular being that of “Weekend Update” City Correspondent “Stefon.” Whenever playing his character, Hader would recommend that New York City visitors should attend bizarre nightclubs that feature outrageous characters and strange activities. Even though the character's segments would often follow the same format every time, Bill Hader's performance was genuinely hilarious and always connected with the audience. What's more, Hader possessed great chemistry with “Weekend Update” Anchor Seth Meyers; who would always be discomforted by the character's zany descriptions. The pair's interactions were always very humorous and I'm curious to see how the popular reoccurring segment comes to its conclusion; as I'm sure Bill Hader's “Stefon” is bound to get a memorable send-off tonight. Thus, Bill Hader's tenure on “Saturday Night Live” has been an absolute joy to watch and I truly hope that his future is rich in great success. Bill Hader will be GREATLY MISSED!!!!

A Mini-Review: Kristen Wiig's Return to "Saturday Night Live" This Past Weekend

Kristen Wiig Host Card Image taken from http://snl.jt.org/ep.php?i=201305110

Kristen Wiig was always a solid performer throughout her seven years as a castmember on “Saturday Night Live.” She was always able to improve the quality of the sketches through her performances. As I got ready to live-blog Kristen Wiig's return to the late-night variety program to host this past Saturday night at 11:30pm,a couple questions were going through my head. Would Kristen Wiig get a good amount of original and creative sketches for her first hosting stint? Or would she be reprising many of her reoccurring characters throughout the show? Well, I wasn't surprised to see my first question answered a little bit into the program; with only a few original sketches taking place towards the latter part of the show. But, I will say that Kristen Wiig and the cast did everything they could top improve the quality of the sketches. Unfortunately, the writing throughout the show proved to be quite lazy and also caused some of the sketches to drag significantly. Below is a brief review of the sketches:

Cold Opening: Benghazi Hearings.

I was very surprised to see Kristen Wiig absent; as I expected to her have a large role as well as deliver the show's signature opening line. That being said, that wasn't a terrible opening; though the writing was just alright. The castmembers' performances throughout were alright; though the sketch appeared a bit rushed. The idea of poking fun at the media's coverage of the Benghazi hearings was intriguing; though I feel the sketch could have gone on a bit longer. Not a poor opening at all; though it could have been executed a tad better.

Monologue: Kristen Wiig

Image of Jonah Hill, Maya Rudolph, and Kristen Wiig taken from http://snl.jt.org/detail.php?i=201305112

In all honesty, I wasn't too surprised to see Kristen Wiig perform a musical number for her monologue. Nevertheless, Kristen Wiig gave a very spirited performance and the joke about her incorrectly identifying some of her former fellow castmembers. I also figured that her “Bridesmaids” co-star and fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Maya Rudolph would make a cameo appearance at some point in the show. Jonah Hill's appearance I wasn't expecting; though his inclusion felt a little tacked on. In addition, even though I enjoy when host’s go backstage during their monologue, the overall format has been done quite often in recent years; with the most recent being this past December when Fellow Former “Saturday Night Live” Alum Martin Short hosted. Furthermore, Kristen Wiig reprising her wide-grinning and trouble-making reoccurring character “Gilly” felt awkward as well as tacked on. Despite these quibbles, I applaud Kristen Wiig on her engaging performance and I was interested in seeing where the show would go next.

Sketch: “The Californians”

I'm not going to go into details about this sketch. I basically say the same thing everytime I review this sketch. Henceforth, I'm just going to say this: the format of this sketch was basically the same as previous installments and the performances were basically similar to those the cast bestowed before. In addition, Maya Rudolph's performance in this sketch was nothing special at all. I am extremely tired of this sketch and I really feel bad for Kristen Wiig and the cast to be given such truly weak material by the writers. The less said about this sketch the better.

Commercial Parody: “Aw Nuts, Mom's a Ghost”

This was a humorous spoof of the Disney Channel's method of promoting their movies. Kristen Wiig gave a good performance as the restless and undead spirit of her children's mother, Bobby Moynihan and Cecily Strong did well portraying the young children; though I will say some of their scenes felt a bit rushed. Nevertheless, this wasn't a bad sketch and the performances were quite alright.

Sketch: “The Lawrence Welk Show”

Image of Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis taken from http://snl.jt.org/detail.php?i=201305116

This reoccurring sketch of Kristen Wiig's I enjoy-- mostly due to her performance as her tiny-handed “Lawrence Welk Show” dancer “Doonise.” That being said, the format was basically the same as previous installments. Jason Sudeikis gave a good performance as the straightman to Wiig's character; and he did have some good lines-- such as asking the fellow dancers and sisters (played by Nasim Pedrad, Vanessa Bayer, and Cecily Strong)of “Doonise” if she is really their sister. As usual, Kristen Wiig gave an engaging performance; thus improving the overall quality of the sketch a bit more. Nevertheless, in all honesty, this was almost an exact rehash of previous installments.

“Weekend Update”

Now this wasn't a great edition of the weekly news segment at all. Most of Seth Meyer's jokes were complete duds; with the exception of his quip about “American Idol” launching a spinoff show about auditioning new hosts for the next season. Also, the return of Bobby Moynihan's second-hand news reporter “Anthony Crispino” wasn't funny at all, and the castmember's performance got increasingly annoying when speaking in an increasingly-high voice. The segment just dragged and I prayed for it to end. In addition, the return of Kristen Wiig's and Fred Armisen's “singing” duo “Garth and Kat” wasn't great at all, and their segment was basically just a rehash of previous installments; with the exception of the characters “playing” musical instruments during their final song. Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen did what they could with the material, but the segment just wasn't great or memorable. All in all, not a great edition of “Weekend Update” at all. When Seth Meyers becomes the new host of “Late Night” next year, I hope the writing is better for him than it has been for the past few seasons of “Saturday Night Live.”

Sketch: The Return of Kristen Wiig's Target Clerk

And here we have ANOTHER reoccurring character of Kristen Wiig's. In addition, this was basically just another rehash of previous installments. Though I do like Kristen Wiig's mumble-mouthed performance as her character in this sketch, the ENTIRE format of the sketch was basically the same as previous installments. Once again, Kristen Wiig did what she could to improve the quality of the sketch through her performance. Unfortunately, the poor writing hurt the sketch

Sketch: Acupuncture

The first real non-reoccurring sketch to appear on the show after the Disner Channel spoof. That being said, this was humorous; mostly due to all the performances. Kristen Wiig and Aidy Bryant gave good performances as the acupuncturists; who pushed their pins so far into the back of their unsuspecting patient, played by Jason Sudeikis, causing an outpouring of blood. Watching Aidy Bryant and Kristen Wiig's characters go into such a panicked state was engaging, and I did get some laughs at some of the methods they employed to cover their mistakes; such as the latter employing a fake Japanese accent in an attempt to pretend to be another doctor. Jason Sudeikis also gave a humorous performance as their patient; who had no idea what was going on as the blood kept pouring everywhere. However, this was my problem with the sketch. I'm not crazy about the writing staff of “Saturday Night Live” writing staff employing such graphic material to get laughs from the audience. If it weren't for the comical performances of Kristen Wiig and the cast, this sketch wouldn't have been that great.

Sketch: “Double Date”

Image of Tim Robinson and Bobby Moynihan as their characters taken from http://snl.jt.org/detail.php?i=2013051112

And here was another original sketch. I was happy to see Tim Robinson get another starring role in a sketch. Here, he and Bobby Moynihan played two little boys dining with two sociable women; played by Kristen Wiig and Cecily Strong. Robinson and Moynihan played their parts very well, and I really liked their convincing performances. I also enjoyed Kristen Wiig's and Cecily Strong's performances as well. I also got another laugh at Taran Killam's performance as the waiter; especially when going into his manic laughing state. I also got laughs out of Tim Robinson's and Bobby Moynihan's characters pouring out a jar of change to pay for their meals as well as Kristen Wiig's character saying that the coins wouldn't be enough to pay for all their meals. This wasn't a bad sketch.

Commercial-Spoof: “Classy Sexy Elegance”

Image of Cecily Strong, Kristen Wiig, and Aidy Bryant as their characters taken from
http://snl.jt.org/detail.php?i=2013051113

This was a mixed bag of a commercial parody. For one thing. “Saturday Night Live” has done these CD commercial-parodies many times before. Even the set-up was the same. Two spokespeople-- in this case-- played by Kenan Thompson and Nasim Pedrad-- introduce singers on a music compilation. This time, the CD was a collection of socialites singing while their lyrics were delivered in an auto-tuned fashion. However, I will say that Kristen Wiig, Aidy Bryant, and Cecily Strong performed well as their characters. Though I will say that the entire segment appeared rushed. In addition, I wish that Kenan Thompson and Nasim Pedrad were given some more humorous lines for their characters. In addition, the whole auto-tuned concept for the album could have been funnier. Instead, the idea just felt a bit unnecessary. Nevertheless, this wasn't a bad closing sketch. I just feel it could have been a bit better.

And that's the show. I'm REALLY disappointed that Kristen Wiig, a very good sketch comedy performer, wasn't given a lot of creative roles to play. I enjoy her performances on the show over the years and I was happy to see her back. I just wish that the “Saturday night Live” writing staff had come up with more creative sketches for her first hosting stint.

And that's my review. Tomorrow night is the season finale; which will be hosted by Ben Affleck and Kanye West will be the musical guest. Before the show, I'm going to share some thoughts on the season as the whole as well as offer my opinions on longtime castmembers Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Fred Armisen leaving the show after tomorrow night.

And right when the show begins, I will be live-blogging the sketches, the performances, the writing, and anything else that comes to mind. Thank you all for following my blog tonight.  My review of this episode will be up by Monday night at the latest.  Thank you all once again and have a good night!

Goodnights are coming up

All in all, not a terrible show, but it could have been MUCH BETTER.  Kristen Wiig is very talented and she deserves more original roles.

Good to see Aidy Bryant get some good amount of screentime this week

The performances in this sketch are quite good

We are back!

This commercial parody isn't bad so far

Kristen Wiig is giving a good musical performance

Kenan Thompson and Nasim Pedrad are doing well also.

commercials are on now

I'm guessing we'll get one more short sketch before the end of the show

That was a good sketch

Much better than the previous one

The performances in this sketch are good

Bobby Moynihan and Tim Robinson do well at portraying young kids.

I will also say that this is an original and creative sketch.

This isn't bad at all.  Good to see Tim Robinson debut a new character.

We are back!

Here's another original sketch.

This looks like it could be new reoccurring characters for Bobby Moynihan and Tim Robinson.

Good performance

Commercials are on now

This is a good song

I actually like this performance better than their first one

I like the sound of this song as well.

Vampire Weekend is a decent band

Vampire Weekend's next performance should be coming up next

This is a VERY DISGUSTING sketch

This isn't very great.

The usage of excessive blood in sketches in just a way to get easy gasps from the audience.

Not a great sketch at all.  But at least is wasn't a reoccurring character sketch.

Commercials are on now

We are back

This seems like an original sketch.

Oh great.  The usage of blood tp get laughs.  I'm not crazy about this sketch so far.

Though I'm happy that we are FINALLY seeing an original sketch.

The erformances by Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and Aidy Bryant are good though

Next sketch is coming up

commercials are on now

The writing is lust plain lazy for the most part of tonight's show

What a waste of Kristen Wiig. I want an original sketch!

I REALLY wish that Kristen Wiig would be given original sketches tonight

The return of Kristen Wiig's Target Lady

ANOTHER REOCCURRING CHARACTER!!!  This show is pretty much everything I expected tonight.  With the exception of the cold opening.

Kristen Wiig is giving a good performance, though this sketch is is basically following the same format as previous installments.

We are back!

Next sketch is coming up

Aside from the musical instruments, this segment was basically just the same as previous installments

Very lackluster edition of "Weekend Update" this week.

Commercials are on now

I'm sorry, but this isn't very funny at all

I wish they would do more creative bits for Kristen Wiig tonight instead of relying on the same sketches and set-ups.

Garth and Kat!! Another reoccurring character that relies on the same set-up every time it takes place

Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig have good energy as these characters, but these segments just go on too long.

Aside from his American Idol joke, Seth Meyers' quips haven't been very funny tonight

Mynihan is just coming off as being very annoying as this character

Just not funny at all

That wasn't a bad joke aimed at American Idol

The basic set-up for this Bobby Moynihan is basically the same every time.  Lazy writing is common throughout this season

Seth Meyers' jokes haven't been that great so far tonight

We are back with "Weekend Update'

"Weekend Update" is coming up next

That wasn't bad

Short performance though

Commercials are on now

The lead singer has a good voice

This isn't a bad performance so far

Vampire Weekend has a good sound

We are back with Vampire Weekend

First musical performance is coming up

Commercials are on now

The performances in this sketch are verygood

I'm actually surprised this sketch wasn't the opening sketch.

Usually this sketch opens the show

Kristen Wiig is good as this character

Too bad it's basically the same format every time

The Lawrence Welk Show! ANOTHER one of Kristen Wiig's reoccurring sketch

I also figured they do this tonight.

Jason Sudeikis very talented.

We are back!

Next sketch is coming up

This wasn't bad

Good performances by all.

I'm looking forward to seeing Ben Affleck host the season finale next week.  He's always a good host.

This is a good spoof of those Disney Channel commercials

Is this a spoof of a specific horror film as well?

This wasn't great at all!

The sketch basically follows the same format every time

Maya Rudolph again!

I don't find the concept of constantly giving directions to be very funny

This isn't very funny so far

The performances are good, but there's nothing at all special about this sketch.

The Californians! I'm REALLY tired of this sketch

It's basically the same thing every time

We are back!

First sketch of the night is coming up

Commercials are on now

This is a funny ad spoof

Good to see her and Kate McKinnon paired up together.

Very enjoyable monologue

Kristen Wiig is a very good performer.

Good to see Lorne Michaels

Gilly!  Had afeeling Wiig would play her at some point tonight

Maya Rudolph and Jonah Hill!!!

Didn't expect to see him tonight.  Maya Rudolph I had a feeling would show up tonight

Good to see a backstage monologue

I'm happy she's back on SNL

Kristen Wiig has always been a good castmember

Welcome back to SNL, Kristen Wiig!

I hope tonight's show has good sketches

And that Kristen Wiig gets a good amount of original material

I'm REALLY surprised Kristen Wiig didn't open the show

I figured that she'd star in the opening

This isn't a bad opening

The performances in this sketch are good

The writing is alright as well

I'm surprised they didn't open the show with a Kristin Wiig-lead sketch

C-SPAN Cold Opening About the Bengazi Attacks

And We are Live...NOW!!!!!!!

A "That's Nater-Tain-Ment" Special Mini-Report: Kristen Wiig Returns to Host "Saturday Night Live"

Tonight, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" features Former Castmember Kristen Wiig taking on hosting duties for her first time with musical guest Vampire Weekend. Wiig joined the cast of the long-running variety show back in November 2005 as a featured player and became a repertory castmember at the start of Season 32-- September 2006. Kristen Wiig performed on the show for a total of seven seasons and later went on to co-write and star in 2011's "Bridesmaids"; which went on to be a big success at the box office as well as a hit with critics and moviegoers.

Image of Kristen Wiig and "Saturday Night Live" Castmember Fred Armisen taken from http://www.google.com/imgres?rlz=1T4ADFA_enUS473US477&biw=1152&bih=491&tbm=isch&tbnid=cG5Zz0-j1xewFM:&imgrefurl=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/kristen-wiigs-saturday-night-live-519460&docid=LhMzRhILkvacqM&imgurl=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/thumbnail_570x321/2013/05/snl_promo_kristen_wiig.jpg&w=565&h=318&ei=LdWOUevwIYfF0AGX6YEw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=389&vpy=136&dur=3703&hovh=168&hovw=299&tx=129&ty=98&page=1&tbnh=135&tbnw=246&start=0&ndsp=11&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0,i:88

In her tenure as a castmember on "Saturday Night Live", Kristen Wiig portrayed a good amount of characters that went on to make many appearances throughout the past years.  One such character Wiig portrayed a few times on the program was "Gilly"; a mischievous school student that would constantly pull pranks on her classmates; and would only apologize for her wrongdoings by uttering an insincere "Sorry"; despite the fact that her actions kept getting increasingly harmful as the sketch went on.  While Wiig performed well as the character, the format was basically the same every time the sketch was trotted out.  Another character Wiig was well-known for playing was "Mindy Elise Grayson," a stage actress that was a popular celebrity guest in the reoccurring game show sketch "Secret Word."  Wiig's character would inadvertently give away the answers to questions to the game show's contestants while performing theatrical scenes in an exuberant manner as well as constantly recalling her past theatrical performances.  While Wiig always bestowed an engaging performance as her character, the format was basically the same every time the sketch was brought out; with the only constant difference being that the designated host of "Saturday Night Live" would portray the other celebrity guest-- who would be more focused in exhibiting their own talents rather than offering contestants hints at trying to figure out the unknown word.  Other characters Kristen Wiig portrayed on "
Saturday Night Live" included "Penelope"- a party guest that would always try to one-up her fellow guests' stories in an attempt to get attention, "Sue"- an over-excited guest or family member who would go through great lengths to keep a secret during a surprise party, as well as "Cheryl Bryant"-- a "Home Delivery" reporter who would be more excited than the actual winner of the give away.  Whenever Kristen Wiig played these characters, she always gave a 100% and did all she could to improve the writing of the sketches-- as the format was basically always the same every time the sketches occurred.  Kirsten Wiig always possessed great chemistry with her fellow castmembers and the show's hosts; thus establishing her as one of the most reliable performers on the weekly variety series.  I just wish the show's writers would have come up with more original sketches for her rather than just trotting out the same characters every few weeks.

While brings to this following thought.  Seeing as Kristen Wiig is hosting the show tonight for her first time, I truly wish that the writers would come up with original sketches for her.  Throughout these past few seasons, Kristen Wiig has been assigned the same basic premises for characters.  Kristen Wiig is very talented and very funny.  Seeing as she's now hosting "Saturday Night Live," I wish the writers would forgo giving her reoccurring sketches; thus paving the way for more creative sketches.  If we basically see the same characters that Wiig has played on the show over the past few years, there will hardly be anything distinct from this episode than from her past shows-- other than her monologue.  Simply put, I just hope that tonight's show is very memorable and that the writers come up with great original sketches for Kristen Wiig.  Other wise, we might as well just watch a rerun from any of the past seasons that feature the same old reoccurring characters.  I want the writers to really try from Kristen Wiig.

Hopefully tonight's show is very special.  Be sure to have your televisions set to NBC by 11:30pm and have my blog on your computers.  Be sure to keep refreshing your computer screens during the show so you can see my latest comments.  Feel free to share your own thoughts by clicking the "comment" link underneath any of my posts.  Your feedback means a lot and I look forward to seeing your opinions.

Some Quick Thoughs About "Saturday Night Live"

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: “Saturday Night Live” is suffering from a case of very poor writing. What used to be a fun-filled ninety minute block of intelligent comedy has turned into an hour-and-a-half of wasted opportunities and sketches that just don't go anywhere. Ever since “Saturday Night Live” began airing new episodes in 2013, there has been a countless number of bad sketches and inadequate writing. In fact, with the exception of Justin Timberlake's episode this past March, there hasn't been a very memorable episode to air in the second half of the long-running sketch comedy program's thirty-eighth season.

Take this most recent episode with Vince Vaughn for example; which aired April 13th. The show, for the most part consisted of sketches that contained slim premises, the repetition of jokes, and periods of time that just dragged. For instance, one segment took place a junior prom and Vaughn starred as a rich man who donated money to the dance and attended the festivities in hopes to lift the spirits of the students in attendance. And Vaughn's character did so by dancing with some of the younger male students. While Vaughn and the cast bestowed good performances, there was hardly any jokes in the sketch; with the exception of the obvious one of a grown man dancing with young men; played by some of the male “Saturday Night Live” students. The sketch went on to drag at points; even though Vaughn did all he could to improve the quality of the sketch by exhibiting his comedic dance skills. Another sketch that wasn't entirely great was a piece entitled “Short Term Memory Loss Theater.” “Saturday Night Live” castmember Bill Hader played a physician who works with patients affected by short term memory loss. The basic joke of the sketch was that the stage performers, played by Vaughn and some of the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers, could hardly remember any of their lines due to their medical condition. There was hardly any surprises in the sketch; as the obvious joke of the performers' forgetting their lines was very foreseeable. The only laughs I got from the sketch were the performances of Vince Vaughn and “Saturday Night Live” castmember Fred Armisen, who portrayed two of the play's stage performers, as well as Bill Hader's portrayal of the physician; who got increasingly frustrated by the performers' constant forgetting of their lines. If it wasn't for the performances, the sketch would have been a complete misfire.

But the show wasn't all bad. There were some bright spots that stood out in the episode. For instance, for his monologue, Vince Vaughn, in an unexpected turn, went into the audience and interacted with some of those in attendance. Watching Vaughn interact with some viewers in a completely laid-back manner was a treat to watch Highlights included joking with a male audience member about his plans for after the show as well as jestingly ejecting another male viewer who had been waiting a long time to see an episode of “Saturday Night Live.” I was so happy that the writers basically just let Vince Vaughn do his own thing for his monologue rather than engage in another song-and-dance monologue or interact with a “Saturday Night Live” reoccurring character, Another enjoyable part of the show was a short film that featured castmember Fred Armisen as the lead singer of a fictional punk rock band; who, despite his anarchist ways, possessed a strong fondness for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The entire production values were very good and the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers in the short film did very well with their performances; especially Fred Armisen, who exhibited a good impression of British punk rock singers. The entire segment was very well-done, and was a good reminder that “Saturday Night Live” can still come up with creative short films.

Nevertheless, despite keen performances, the weak writing of the late night program is the show's greatest weakness right now. With three episodes left to air this season, I am worried to see how they play out. However, I will not be here to cover this week's new episode; which will be hosted by actor-comedian Zach Galifianakis. However, I will be back by Sunday night and I plan to watch the show online. Hopefully by Monday or Tuesday night, I will have a brief review of the show available on my blog. Galifianakis has done a fine job hosting his previous two episodes, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good show. Hopefully, this will be a good show.

So thank you all for your patience and I hope you all have a good weekend. Thank you all for following my blog and stay tuned for more blogging!
