Movies I Want To See: Summer Comedies Edition

It’s almost that time of the year again: The summer movie season is almost here! And all the films that are scheduled for wide-release are being given the final touches before they are screened for our enjoyment. And this year, it's sure to be a blast! While there are many big-budget action films, like "Thor" and "Captain America," in store for us throughout the warm months that will dazzle us with many visual effects. But, there are, of course, different sure-to-be-great comedies starring talented performers, top-notch writing, and spot-on comic timing. All these components ensure a strong sense of chemistry amongst the films' stars; thus enabling audiences to cheer for them. Thus, it is with enormous enthusiasm that I say

I Can Not Wait To See The Comedies of Summer 2011!

One such comedy I’m looking forward to seeing is the Judd Apatow-produced “Bridesmaids." The film, which opens May 13, stars Kristen Wiig as Annie; whose best friend Lillian, played by Maya Rudolph, is getting engaged. This causes Kristen Wiig's character, who is still unmarried, to start to lose control of her life; as she fears that she might be losing her best friend. Now as Lillian’s maid of honor, Annie takes her best friend as well as their bridesmaids for a bridal shower in Las Vegas; during which, wild shenanigans will more-than-likely take place. I am really looking forward to seeing Kristen Wiig in her first official lead role; as she is a very talented actress and she possesses great comic timing. And, as they have been great together on "Saturday Night Live", I am anticipating the great chemistry between Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph to be a lot of fun. In addition, it will be great to see a group of comedic actresses participate in “Hangover”-style craziness; as it will certainly lead to many laugh-filled moments as well as moments of pure heart. And, with Kristen Wiig as the star of “Bridesmaids,” the funniness will definitely be grand.

As perfect chemistry is going to be a significant component of the inevitable success of “Bridesmaids,” I am also looking forward to seeing “Horrible Bosses;” opening the weekend of July 8. In director Seth Gordon’s forthcoming R-rated film, Jason Bateman, "Saturday Night Live"'s Jason Sudekis, and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"'s Charlie Day portray three unfortunate employees who work for three awful managers; portrayed Kevin Spacey, Collin Farrell, and Jennifer Anniston respectfully. The trios of workers are so fed up with their superiors’ behavior that they decide perfrom acts of revenge unto them; with inevitably uproarious results. While the overall idea of the movie sounds a tad dark, I am excited to see these performers get in-and-out of many scrapes. And, the combination of Bateman, Sudekis, and Day is sure to display powerful chemistry; as they are all experienced in verbal and physical humor. In addition, the very idea of Spacey, Farrell, and Anniston starring in an R-rated summer comedy sounds very intriguing; as it will be great seeing these big-name stars let loose and have fun playing over-the-top characters. Henceforth, "Horrible Bosses" sounds like it could be an absolute hoot; and I'm looking forward to seeing this inevitably laugh-out-loud comedy.

Another film opening this summer that I am eager to see is the romantic comedy “Crazy Stupid Love;” which actually does not start off on a humorous note. On July 29, Steve Carell stars as Cal Weaver, whose wife Emily, played by Julianne Moore, tells him that she is having an affair and wants a divorce. This unquestionably devastates Steve Carell’s character; but it technically provides the setup for the comic possibilities of the film. Eventually, professional ladies’ man Jacob Palmer, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, helps out Carell’s protagonist by teaching him how to get his life together. This leads to Carell’s character getting a sharp new wardrobe as well as being taught how to approach single women. I am expecting several great exchanges between the two actors; thus once again depicting perfect chemistry. Also, seeing as Ryan Gosling is frequently cast in dramas, I am excited to see the actor speak comedic phrases and take on in humorous situations with Steve Carell. In fact, the scenes in which Gosling and Carell partake in remind me of those the later shared with Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin;” as the jokes are very funny—but also honest. Moreover, fresh off her fantastic performance in "Easy A," Emma Stone portrays Gosling's character's love interest; and I am hoping that she shares memorable scenes with him and Steve Carell that are both funny as well as heartfelt. In other words, I am hoping for a lot of wit and authenticity with this talented band of entertainers. However, judging by the film's trailer, I do think that Amy Adams should have been casted as Carell's character's wife instead of Julianne Moore; as I think that she would give a better and more emotional performance. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing Directors Glenn Ficara and John Requa’s approaching film; as I am sure that it will be funny as well as emotional.

While all these comedies are definitely on my “Must See” list, the film I am most excited for is, of course, “The Hangover: Part II.” While we all expect that the second film will resemble the first plot-wise, the great ensemble consisting of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis definitely makes the sequel worth seeing in theaters. Every moment of “The Hangover” was completely memorable on account of the trio’s great comedic timing, hilarious exchanges, and pitch-perfect chemistry. We were rooting for them every step of the way and savoring every moment. Thus, I cannot wait until Memorial Day Weekend to reunite with our dysfunctional heroes and laugh uncontrollably once more.

Thus, I am more-than-excited about these upcoming comedies. I am looking forward to seeing these movies with my family and friends; sitting in the theaters, holding our sides due to the laughter, and observing grand performances. And once I see these films, I will review them for your reading pleasure. For nothing provides cool refreshment for the summer months than a healthy dose of Nater-Tainment!.

Film Review: "Limitless"

What if you were able to do the impossible? What would you do if you were able to speak any language without any hesitation? What if you were able to write a book a within a matter of days? And what if you were able to figure your way out of any predicament? The possibilities of these scenarios are endless; and I am sure that anyone would love to be able to accomplish all these fantastic feats. I know I would. Well, a few weeks ago I saw the captivating thriller “Limitless”; which features a great performance by star Bradley Cooper, an electrifying story, and riveting surprises. Thus, it is with rapid enthusiasm that I say:

“Limitless” is a Non-Stop Ride with Many Twists and Turns

In Director Neil Burger’s gripping film, Bradley Cooper plays Eddie Morra; a burnt-out writer who does not deliver in his latest writing on time and is consequently dumped by his girlfriend Lindy—portrayed by Abbie Cornish. A short time later, Eddie runs into his brother-in-law Vernon, played by Johnny Whitworth, who happens to be a drug dealer. In an effort to improve Eddie’s life a little, Vernon gives him a trial-pill of NZT-48; which he eventually takes—and all of a sudden, his brain unlocks the power to be utilized to its utmost aptitude; thus giving him the power to write his book at rapid-fire pace as well as gain the motivation to reorganize his disorderly apartment. Unfortunately, the power of the pill wears off by morning; and he knows that he must have more of the pill. Vernon agrees to give him more of the pill; but only if he runs an errand for him. However, once Eddie returns, he finds his brother-in-law dead. After notifying the police, Eddie finds a bag of NZT-48 and departs the apartment; right after he questioned by the police. Upon returning home, he takes a pill; and gives himself a complete makeover. Knowing that he needs money to fund his new life, Eddie eventually starts working in the stock market with his newfound strong intelligence; thus becoming rich. Eddie’s newfound focus also successfully reunites him with Lindy as well as eventually getting hired by powerful entrepreneur Carl Van Loon; played by Robert DeNiro. Unfortunately, the NZT-48 brings some terrible consequences into Eddie’s life; predominately the life-threatening side-effects that take place when experiencing a major lack of the drug-- such as passing out and becoming severely ill. And as the side-effects increase, Eddie must keep his career intact despite many threats on his life by Gennady; a brute, played by Andrew Howard, that Eddie applied to for a loan and is out to collect the money— by any means necessary. And throughout the film, Bradley Cooper gives a striking performance that keeps the audience’s attention whenever he is on screen.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of “Limitless” would be that its overall storyline is full is more-than-intriguing; thus resulting in large amounts of suspense. Right at the start of the film, we are brought into the action; already clutching our seats in high anticipation. And as we originally meet Bradley Cooper’s character, you are already anticipating that the inevitable taking of the drug will bring about big changes to this irresponsible and unmotivated character. And once the minuscule tablet is ingested, a tidal wave of possibilities for both Bradley Cooper’s characters as well as the audience open up. We smile in excitement as Eddie writes his book, make a move on the ladies and soak up joys of living in success and luxury. What’s more, Eddie can figure his way out of any quandary; whether it be arguing with his landlord or making his way out of a fight with a street gang. And, when he renews his relationship with Lindy, we see this once-apathetic loner become committed to keeping his love intact and safe from harm. And, just as we know that nothing ever lasts forever, we, the audience, constantly worry about when he is going to run out of the life-changing capsule; thus we do, in fact, share the fear that Eddie possesses once he realizes that his supply is running out. And, once we see the terrible side-effects of not having enough of the drug, we are constantly rooting for Eddie to score more of the valuable-yet-dangerous medication. And when we see Eddie constantly having to flee from the threat of Andrew Howard’s Gennady, our eyes are forever-focused on the action that’s unraveling on the screen in front of us. Henceforth, as “Limitless” plays, we experience vast feelings of exhilaration as well as significant alarm and trepidation; basically the same emotions Bradley Cooper’s character undertakes throughout the film.

But while the writing is completely solid and the plotline constantly evokes suspense, I believe that a majority of the acting was well-timed and skilled as well. Mostly perfected by star Bradley Cooper; who gives a swaggering-yet –expressive turn as the film’s chief protagonist. Before taking the pill, Cooper is very convincing as a less-than-enthusiastic author; who doesn’t show enough affection when his girlfriend Lindy dumps him. He is completely disheveled; and completely lacks any sense of focus or self-respect. But, once Eddie Morra takes the sacred pill, he transforms into an entirely different person. He’s intelligent, he’s alert on all accounts, and most importantly, he is committed to everything; predominantly turning his life completely around for the better. And, once he is reaping the benefits of the NZT-48, there is a whirl-wind of gusto; as Eddie knows that he can know do anything as he has become entirely perfect. We see him get a complete make-over and become a hit with the ladies as well as a whiz with numbers and the financial world. And Cooper’s greatly affirmative performance makes him appear overzealous at times; as he knows that nothing could possibly stop his seemingly-endless winning streak. But also eager to maintain his ideal life as he becomes financially-secure and happily in love once again with Lindy. It appears that everything is going his way.

However, while his character does emerge over-confident, Bradley Cooper also makes his character appear vulnerable as well. This is made evident when we see the horrific side-effects of the pill; particularly when we see him struggle to keep alive when becoming vastly ill due to a lack of the drug. We also observe him becoming more and more frightful of the constant threats onto his life by Gennady. Eddie is always on the constant watch for his foe; even going so far as to hire bodyguards as well as eventually moving into a high-security apartment. But, throughout the film, Cooper fears for his safety; as well as desperately trying to ensure that he has an endless supply of NZT-48. And, as we watch him struggle to keep alive due to pill withdrawal, we are drawn to Cooper’s emotive performance.

While Bradley Cooper is great as the film’s lead character, the bulk of the supporting cast is quite enthralling as well; particularly Abbie Cornish as Lindy and Andrew Howard as Gennady . Abbie Cornish gives a strong performance as Lindy; who only wants what is best for Bradley Cooper’s character. When we meet Lindy, it is clear that she has had it with Eddie’s behavior and wants him to get his act together. And, when they get back together, the romantic chemistry between the two is more-than-apparent; and you can tell that her character really does care about him. And, when Cornish’s character finds out about Andrew Howard’s malicious character as well as the truth about the pill, we see her fear for Eddie’s life as well as find out her unfavorable sentiments about his taking of the NZT-48. In addition, Andrew Howard gives a good presentation Gennady; whose constantly harassing Eddie. And, once again, I don’t want to spoil anything, but he also gets a tasting of the NZT-48 and that gives him further reason to chase down Eddie; as he wants to further harness the power of the drug for himself. And in order to get what he wants, he comes after Eddie with great force and even purses Lindy in an enthralling chase scene; as she rushes to retrieve Eddie’s pills as he suffers from lack of NZT-48. Therefore, both Cornish and Howard make their respected supporting characters truly believable and further keep us anticipating what happens next.

The only problem I had when watching “Limitless,” however, would be the overall performance by Robert DeNiro’s character of Carl Van Loon; Bradley Cooper’s boss when working for the stock market. This is very below par for me; mainly because I feel that DeNiro is one of the greatest actors in the business. So, naturally, when I found out that he is in this movie, I was excited to see him interact with Bradley Cooper; who is been getting more popular over the past few years. Unfortunately, I was very let down to see the Hollywood legend known as Robert DeNiro give an unenergetic performance as a powerful stock market figure. I expected a great force of energy from DeNiro as he made his presence on the big screen; but I believe that Bradley Cooper’s fast-paced dialogue and performance outshined him in every way. I felt that DeNiro could have given a much more intimidating performance when acting alongside Bradley Cooper; perhaps even being the film’s designated villain. But, ultimately, Andrew Howard’s greatly menacing performance as Gennady stood out more so than DeNiro’s; thus making his appearance in the film not so noteworthy. In fact, I feel that any actor could have played DeNiro’s part in the film; seeing as his enervated act took away from much of the action and lessened the impact of many of the film’s sequences.

All in all, “Limitless” is a quality film; fortified by a riveting story and a quality performance by Bradley Cooper. His enthralling act only strengthens the storyline and overall tone of the film; thus keeping our concentration at all times. Thus, I can honestly say that “Limitless” is definitely one of year’s most stirring films so far; with hardly anything holding it back—with the possible exception of a not-so-amazing performance by Robert DeNiro. Otherwise, “Limitless” really does unlock exhilaration and a good time at the movies.

Here It Is: The Trailer for "The Hangover: Part II"

Here is the trailer for "The Hangover: Part II." I am very excited about seeing this movie. And even though there will be a lotof references to the first movie, I am sure that Director Todd Philips and the talented and hysterical cast will make the movie a fun time for all! I can't wait for Memorial Day Weekend to be here!

Trailer Analysis: "The Hangover: Part II"

I am a big fan of Director Todd Phillips’ 2009 Comic Masterpiece “The Hangover”. This grand opus of cinema was not only gut-bustlingly hilarious; but also a Golden Globe Winning film. Not only do I own the Unrated DVD of “The Hangover”; but whenever it airs on HBO, I savor every minute of its delicious hilarity. I, my family and friends all love this hysterical movie; and we can all say that this is one of the most outstanding comedies made in recent years. However, when it was announced that there was to be a sequel released this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend, I remember thinking to myself: How on Earth could the inspired director and multi-talented cast possibly top themselves with a follow-up? Well, my friends, I have seen the full promo for the soon-to-be-released continuation and I can honestly say that:

“The Hangover: Part II” Is Going To Be Another Laugh-Filled and Exciting Ride

In the trailer, we see the original film’s characters Phil, Doug, Alan, and Stu venture to Bangkok, Thailand for the latter’s own wedding. And when watching the slightly-over-two-minute preview stream, we find that what was once again originally meant to be an enjoyable pre-wedding celebration; has become a complete disaster. Our heroes are now lost in Bangkok and are left with various traces of what took place the night before. And as events unfold, the gang is reunited with their adversary Mr. Chow; once again played with top-notch glee by Ken Jeong.

And, as the preview’s clips fly by in a rapid-fire manner in front of our eyes, it appears that hilarious hijinks are definitely in store this summer.

As a result of the set-up of the trailer, I can sincerely say that I am more-than-eager to see Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifinakas reprise their mismatched-yet-determined characters. Once again, our male leads have to cooperate and put together the pieces of their crazy antics in hopes to arrive to Helms’ character’s wedding. While the scrapes they got into were side-splitting, it was their perfect chemistry that made the first movie so perfect. They have the great ability to play each other both verbally and physically; thus allowing audiences to cheer for them throughout the affair. Plus, they each possess great comedic timing and their ability to keep up with each other’s acting was perfect; thus making them one of the best big-screen comedic ensambles ever put together.

But while the group work great together as a whole, each performer appear to be in top form. Bradley Cooper’s Phil is still the official leader of the group and is the one responsible for keeping the group on their feet. Also, Ed Helms is overly-panicky and frazzled as Stu; once again having some facial damage done to himself—though more significant rather than just a missing tooth. Furthermore, Zach Galifianakis is still utterly disorientated and dense as Alan; who seems to be getting into even more crazy situations in the sequel. Furthermore, as we all remember his more-than-uproarious performance in the first film, it is only fitting that Galifianakis treats viewers to the first big joke in the preview.

Image taken from http://moviesblog.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/hangover2-monkey-575.jpg

Furthermore, it is good to see Justin Bartha reprise his role of Doug; the straight man of the original film. His ability to hold his own while interacting with the core three was impeccable; as he was able to serve as a fully-developed character and a plot device as well. And, as we see in the trailer, it appears that Bartha’s character will be in constant communication with our protagonists as they stumble from one sequence to another.

However, while I am looking forward to seeing “The Hangover Part II” in theaters this summer, the preview does present a few minor concerns. First of all, as I am excited to see Ken Jeong reprise his infamous role of Mr. Chow. However, it appears that he is going to be included in the group’s path-to-discovery. While seeing him in action with Phil, Alan, and Stu could be fun; I am a little skeptical of the logic of the situation.

Image taken from http://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/The-Hangover-part-2.jpg

Another concern that the preview brings forward, is that the film seems to be referencing Philips’ original feat quite frequently. While keeping continuity alive is very important for a sequel, I fear that too many callbacks could be considered overkill and a tad insulting to one’s intelligence; as we are being constantly reminded of events that had previously taken place. Image taken from http://www.icelebz.com/movies/the_hangover_part_ii/images/movie-the_hangover_part_ii-stills-769575734.jpg

Furthermore, there is that question that we are all thinking: why make a sequel to such a great movie? The first installment was so perfectly-crafted that we are worried to see its legacy tarnished by a possibly-and-hastily-put-together follow-up. We all remember treasuring and quoting the great movie in June 2009; and the very notion of producing a second chapter could be thought of as either lazy or desperate to relive the past. After all, we can all remember that old adage: “If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It.” Image taken from http://moviesblog.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/hangover2-photo.jpg

But, perhaps I am being too quick to judge Todd Philips’ directing. As the original movie introduced us all to this band of misfits, a sequel does allow us to sit back and enjoy as our dysfunctional heroes pick up the pieces from another night gone wrong; thus inducing us to laugh even harder than we did back in 2009. In addition, as the movie is now taking place in Thailand, the change in scenery offers a fresh change of pace; thus making our main characters even more out-of-their-element and an opportunity to explore new lands on their quest to salvation. In other words: it’s a whole new kind of party.

And that’s basically how I feel about seeing “The Hangover: Part II”. I wholeheartedly loved Phillips’ grand comedic oeuvre and I look forward to seeing our comedic cast embark on another hilarious and crazy romp. After all, I’m sure that this will be another celebration that will be worth remembering for years to come.

Here it is: The Trailer for "Your Highness"

Here is the trailer for Your Highness. I wanted to have it on my blog; even though it isn't within my written piece. As you can see, the movie looks like an epic quest of comical proportions. Danny McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman will be great together and I can't wait to see the humorous adventures they have. The special effects look incredible andI'm sure that it will be one of the best R-rated comediesof 2011! Once I see the movie, you can bet that I will review it for my blog. So watch the trailer and read my reasons for why I want to see Your Highness. After all, adventure and comedy are a great combination that guarentees fun!

Movies I Want to See: "Your Highness"

There have been many types of R-rated comedies released in the past few years. In 2009, director Todd Philips treated audiences to the ultimate screwball comedy known as The Hangover; which depicted a Las Vegas bachelor party gone terribly wrong. In 2007, director Greg Motolla gave us the coming-of-age teen comedy Superbad; which focused on socially awkward high school guys attempting to score alcohol for a party. And in 2010, director Steve Pink brought forward Hot Tub Time Machine; an R-rated comedy about four guys being transported to the 1980’s; where they experience life-changing events that significantly impact their respective futures. However, this April, director David Gordon Green brings us "Your Highness"; an R-rated film that specializes in knights in shining armor, mythical creatures, and grand feats of bravery. Thus, it is with an extreme blast of confidence that I proclaim:

I Can’t Wait To Go On The Epic Journey That Is "Your Highness"

In director David Gordon Green’s upcoming medieval comedy, he collaborates with Danny MacBride and James Franco; who previously starred in his 2008 action-comedy Pineapple Express. In Your Highness, Danny McBride plays Thadeous, a lethargic and self-absorbed prince who must accompany his brother Fabious, played by James Franco, in a perilous journey to save their father’s kingdom from an evil wizard named Leezar; portrayed by Justin Theroux. In addition, Leezar has captured Fabious’ bride Belladonna, played by Zooey Deschenel; thus making their quest a rescue mission as well. In addition, Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman plays Isabel; a warrior that serves as McBride’s eventual love interest. Together, the group will face many perils along their quest; and, as the trailers have indicated, it is sure to be a comical one as well. Image taken from http://www.bigshinyrobot.com/reviews/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/your_highness01.jpg

One of the main reasons I would like to see this movie, is that its Danny McBride first official lead role. As moviegoers have seen him play uproarious supporting characters in comedies such as the aforementioned Pineapple Express as well as Tropic Thunder and Land of the Lost; it is great to see McBride play the chief protagonist of a mainstream R-rated comedy. In addition, we know that Danny McBride can play fully-developed character; as he starred as Down-and-Out Kenny Powers in the HBO series Eastbound and Down. One the series, Kenny Powers is very arrogant and brash; but he is also determined to become a successful baseball star once again as well as hoping to find someone to share his life with. In addition, McBride serves as the film’s co-writer; so you can expect a lot of humor as well as human emotion. Image taken from http://www.filmofilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Your_Highness_02-535x356.jpg

Furthermore, I am looking forward to seeing "Your Highness" because Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman is also taking part in the action. As we have all seen Portman play in several dramatic films, I am excited to see her participate in a comedy film. As evident in the film’s trailer, she looks like she was enjoying herself throughout the making of the movie. And, the fact that she is playing McBride’s character’s love interest is exciting as well as I am sure that the two of them will have many great scenes together. Image taken from ' http://gugglet.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Your-Highness-2011.jpg

However, the primary reason I want to see "Your Highness", is that it looks like it could be a great adventure. The idea of mixing comedy with the medieval period is completely impressive in itself and I can’t wait to see McBride, Franco and Portman embark on their action-packed and laugh-filled quest. Thus, Your Highness looks like it could be a lot of fun and I cannot wait to partake in the quest this April. Let the journey begin!

From the Mind of Nate: The Greatness of NBC's Community

College provides people with many wonderful opportunities. For instance, all universities offer a wide array of classes designed to educate young people so they would have the information vital for their inevitable careers. College also provides different physical prospects, such as athletic teams and fitness programs, structured to keep students in shape as well as getting involved in extra-curricular activities. Furthermore, colleges across the country offers pupils an environment I which they can interact, hang out, and form meaningful relationships that last forever. Yes, it seems that universities can offer every necessary fundamental for a student’s growth and development. But college can also provide people with unorthodox classes, such as outdoor sailing in the faculty parking lot, unconventional methods of learning, such as literally being taught how to seize the day through film class, and avant-garde events; such as a campus-wide paintball fight. Doesn’t sound like any college you have heard about? Well, such is the case with Greendale Community College; which is featured in the very creatively-written and brilliantly-performed NBC sitcom Community. The Dan Harmon-created series, which airs every Thursday night at 8:00pm, follows the college life of a seven-member study group and how they adapt to their school’s out-of-the-ordinary curriculum. And every episode features many-layered stories, important life lessons, and lots of laughs. Thus, it is with a pounding in my heart that I say:

‘Community’ is the Most Original and Endearing Sitcom on Television!

What makes Community so exclusive is that its ensamble is so perfectly casted; leading their respective characters to be completely multi-dimensional and real. The star of Community and the leader of the study group is Jeff Winger, played with great cockiness and biting wit by Joel McHale, a thirty-three-year-old former lawyer who was actually caught with a fake law degree and forced to go to Greendale Community College to complete his requirements so he could go back to work. Upon arriving, he notices Britta Perry, played by Gillian Jacobs a twenty-eight-year-old high school drop-out who ultimately serves as the show’s voice of reason. In an attempt to impress her, Jeff establishes order within the study group; as the show’s principle cast are in the same Spanish class throughout the program’s first season and then in the same Anthropology class throughout the current season. McHale and Jacobs possess great chemistry. While they are often sarcastic towards each other, they ultimately cooperate together as well as with their studymates; who are all different in ages, interests, and personalities. For instance, twenty-year-old Annie Edison, played gingerly by Allison Brie, is the most studious of the group; but she is also the show’s most emotionally-delicate character. There is also single-mother Shirley Bennett, portrayed by Yvette Nicole Brown, who is very polite; but can also be very dynamic if angered. Comic-turned-actor Donald Glover plays Troy Barnes; a former high-school football player that has transitioned greatly throughout the program’s run as being haughty to becoming very sensible but fun-loving. Then, there’s Abed Nadir, played by Danny Pudi, a movie-buff and pop-culture-obsessed film student that becomes Troy’s best friend. The final member of the group is Pierce Hawthorne, a sixty-six-year-old former moist towelette mogul—played greatly by Chevy Chase. He is always desperate to be included in all affairs; despite being out-of-touch with the modern world. And throughout every episode of the series, the main characters work well with each other; providing opportunities that are entertaining and heartfelt.

While the core cast of characters is a great source of Community’s wit and creativity, Greendale itself is a significant source of amusement as well. The school is run by over-enthusiastic and eccentric Dean Pelton, portrayed by Jim Rash, who consistently tries to make the school appear as a normal college. Unfortunately, nothing ever goes according to plan; as all events and proceedings end up poorly-executed. For instance, in the Season One episode “Debate 109,” Jeff Winger and Annie Edison participate in a grand debate against archrival City College; despite the fact that the proceedings are held at Greendale’s gym the event ends up being suspended due to the basketball team’s practice being scheduled at the exact same time. Another instance of Greendale’s mismanagement occurs in the Season One episode entitled “Advanced Criminal Law;” in which Britta Perry is put on trial for cheating on a Spanish exam. While Jeff Winger serves as her lawyer, the court case is held at the school’s swim court; which results in everyone getting splashed by divers in the process. Furthermore, Dean Pelton always tries to increase student activities; leading to the creation of multiple school dances and parties that do not go according to plan as well. An example of this occurs in the Season One episode “Environmental Studies,” in which Dean Pelton organizes an environmentally-friendly dance; that includes a band called Green Day. It turns out, however, this specific “Green Day’ is not the famous punk band; but, rather an elderly Celtic Band with the same name.

It should also be mentioned that the teaching staff of Greendale are also a source of the show’s humor; specifically Professor Ben Chang—who serves as the study group’s unstable Spanish teacher. Throughout Community’s first season, Ben Chang, played with considerable craziness by Ken Jeong, fills his class time by either having his students repeat more-than-simple phrases or insulting them with Spanish-sounding made-up words. Thus it is clear that Chang hardly has a grasp of the language at all. Ultimately, in the Season One episode “English as a Second Language,” Chang confesses to Jeff that he is not a certified professor and wants to know where to get a fake degree. Eventually, Dean Pelton finds out and he is removed as teacher; and in Season Two, the supposed teacher is now a student, desperately trying to get accepted into the study group. Unfortunately, Chang is still shown to be very unhinged; thus making the group unsure about welcoming in their former teacher into their designated learning space. Ken Jeong gives a hilariously-the-top-performance; making his character funny and a hit with fans.

What also makes Community so unique is that it utilizes pop culture so considerably more so than most sitcoms on television. What originally was thought of as just a situation comedy detailing the day to day lives at Greendale Community College; creator Dan Harmon surprised all viewers by finding a way to incorporate spoofs of specific movies and genres of film within the episodes’ plotlines—without making the show seem ridiculous in any way. For instance, in the season two episode “Basic Rocket Science”, the study group participates in a space travel simulation; but, right in the first few minutes, there is a spoof of Armageddon; in which the study group approaches the simulation machine the in the same manner in which the astronauts draw near their designated spacecraft in the Michael Bay-directed film. Also, within the episodes there are spoofs of other space-travel films; including 2001: A Space Odyssey and Apollo 13. Also, in the Season Two episode “Epidemiology,” Dean Pelton’s tainted potato salad infects Pierce; turning him into a flesh-craving zombie and the infection spreads throughout Greendale. What then follows is a spoof of zombie-and-slasher films as the members of the study group each become zombies as well; leaving Troy Barnes to ultimately restore order. Furthermore, members of the study group often compare each other to different movie stars and different characters from different television shows. In fact, it should be stated that Community frequently breaks the fourth wall through Abed Nadir, who likens the situations that the group gets involved in as aspects of a television show; such pointing out moments that set up a premise as well as indicating occurrences that be considered as “jumping the shark.” This is a very creative because it allows viewers to laugh and be entertained while keeping in mind that they are watching performers interact within the confines of a television program.

But while the laughs and Meta humor are many, Community excels as a sitcom due to the combination of the cast’s well-matched chemistry and the clever writing; allowing the characters to emerge as authentic. There is a lot of genuine heart present within every episode as they help each other out in times of need. For example, in the aforementioned episode “Advanced Criminal Law, “ Pierce volunteers to lend his supposed songwriting skills to Annie; who has joined Greendale’s song committee and needs someone to write a song for the school. But, as the storyline proceeds, it is evident that Pierce has no real talent whatsoever; as it turns out that a jingle that he wrote for his moist towelette company was, in fact, set to the tune a well-known song alread. Ultimately, knowing that Annie is counting on him to come up with something, Pierce does come up with a school song; even though it turns out that it is not original at all. Another instance of how Community’s characters help each other occurs in the episode “Introduction to Film,” in which Abed wants to pursue his goal of becoming a film director; despite the fact that his father wants him to work in for the family falafel company. Wanting to help Abed, Britta gives Abed the money needed for him to take a film course. Soon enough, his father comes to Greendale to confront his son and Britta stands up for Abed. And, all the while, Abed is documenting everything for a movie; and the finished result shows his father as well as Jeff and Britta where his heart is set and his decision is accepted.

But, perhaps my favorite instance of how the characters support each other occurs at the climax of the abovementioned episode “English as a Second Language,” in which it is revealed that Annie is the one who ratted out Ben Chang out to Dean Pelton for not having a degree in teaching Spanish; knowing that if they under succeed on the final, they would have to retake the class -- and she feels that they would drift apart if they did not take another class together. When the group finds this out, they are very angry with her as now they are expected to know everything in the textbook for the final; as their new teacher is a truly certified teacher and completely fluent in Spanish. Annie leaves the group out of extreme sadness for what she did; and Jeff urges everyone not to call or text her—as he says she is insecure and she needs to grow up. However, when she is not present for the exam, Shirley Bennett receives a text from Annie; who says that she wants to apologize to Chang for getting him fired. Knowing their former teacher is strongly unbalanced, Jeff and the study group abandon their finals and rush to her aid; even though there’s no trouble whatsoever as Annie has helped Chang decide to become a student and obtain his teaching degree. Nevertheless, even though they were angry with her, Jeff, Britta, Shirley, Abed, Troy and Pierce wanted to be there for Annie; as they know that at the end of the day, they are more than just a study group—they are friends!

And that’s what I love about Community: No matter what friction develops within the group, they always end up cooperating and strengthening their friendship at the end of every episode. And, throughout everyepiside, we see that they do all care about each other; thus providing a strong senseofcloseness amongst them. For instance even though we see Jeff Winger being cynical towards certain problems that arise we know deep down in his heart, he does care about his friends’ problems and will help them rebound. We see the close, brotherly relationship between Troy and Abed; who share many of the same interests and engage in humorous pastimes- as evident by each episode’s closing credits scenes in which they are seen either rapping, dancing, or hosting a pretend early-morning talk show entitled “Troy and Abed in the Morning.” We see Pierce offer Jeff life advice; specifically in the Season One episode “Beginner Pottery,” in which he advises him to not let his classmate’s perfect ceramic skills get the best of him. We also have seen Shirley teach Britta appropriate behavior when interacting with other women, especially Annie, in the ladies room—as seen in Season One episode “Football, Feminism and You.” But, most importantly, we see the group as a whole survive every complication that arises at Greendale. And the performers' acting is top-notch as they play off each other with great enthusiasm and timing; thus making the humor believable and rich. Also, whenever the storyline requires moments of genuine humanity, the show's stars deliver each line in a manner most sincere; thus allowing them to match each other's level of acting perfectly. Henceforth, they are a great team; and perhaps the best ensamble in a current sitcom.

Thus, I can’t wait to see what adventures our heroes have in the remaining episodes of Season Two. And, with Community renewed for a sure-to-be-exciting third season, I am all ready for more laughter, enthusiasm, and friendship at Greendale Community College. And that’s what Community comes down to: a show about friends; which is intended for friends and family to enjoy watching together. Who could ever ask for more from a television program?
