A "That's Nater-Tainment" Special Writing

We have experienced television history this week. This week, all eyes were glued to television sets across the country. People gathered together to watch a worldwide star getting the royal treatment. If you think that I am talking about Prince William and his wedding to Catherine Middleton, you are sadly mistaken. For last night, at 9:00pm, Steve Carell ended his seven-season run as the star of the NBC sitcom “The Office;” so that he can concentrate on his successful movie career and be with his family more.

Fans everyhere, myself included, watched as his character Michael Scott said his final goodbyes to his employees. And, as we all know, the long-running sitcom will never be the same again as it still has a few episodes left this year as well as its upcoming eighth season; which will start airing this fall. Thus, in honor of this momentous occasion, I present:

An Ode to Steve Carell and “The Office”

Image taken from http://www.newsfirst5.com/images/news/steve.carell.office.jpg

This week we will cry indeed
As one of our favorite actors has left TV
Steve Carell for the past six years
Has been giving us plenty of laughs and tears
As the star of “The Office” on NBC
He played Dunder Mifflin Paper Inc. Regional Manager Michael Scott for all to see

To portray the eccentric boss, Steve Carell gave a performance that was real
He enabled his character to be both loved and disliked; that was the deal
Michael Scott's management style was different than most
As various meetings and birthday parties he did host
While overseeing all business his job was meant to be
He wanted to treat all Dunder Mifflin workers as his family

He did so by trying to lighten the mood
By doing celebrity impressions that were really not quite good
He would forward e-mails to his workers that he thought were great
But all it did was make his employees irate

He has held Movie Mondays and hosted The Dundies
Mocking Paul Lieberstein’s Toby Flenderson he thought was funny
He always saw himself as The Office Dad
And his prized “World’s Best Boss” coffee mug made him glad

Rainn Wilson’s Dwight was always by his side
But his help Michael Scott did not always abide
Dwight regularly accompanied Michael on his business missions
But Michael would always be the one who made all decisions

He frequently tried to be with Jenna Fischer's Pam and John Krasinki’s Jim
Unfortunately though, they were frequently put off by him
His attempts to be funny caused them to stare
But, episodes like "The Convention" and "Cafe Disco" proved they do care

Another goal for Michael was to find true love
As well as to have kids with the perfect woman sent from above
His relationship with Melora Hardin's Jan Levinson was quite rough
Which ended in the episode Dinner Party;” when the tension got way-too tough

Ultimately, Michael Scott’s patience was no longer taxed
When he meant Amy Ryan’s Human Resources Rep Holly Flax
She shared a love of impressions and numerous quirks
And her chemistry with Michael always worked

When she got transferred to their company's branch in New Hampshire for two years
Michael Scott would occassionally break into tears
Fortunately, she returned Christmastime 2010 for another temporary stay
And a few episodes later, Michael proposed and the two will eventually marr-ay

However, this ending is bittersweet and sad
As Holly needs to go Colorado to be with her ailing dad
Since Michael Scott wants to always be with her
That means, he will be leaving Scranton and Dunder Mifflin Paper

And so, now we say goodbye at last
Steve Carell’s tenure at NBC went so fast
We laughed with him, we cried with him
Now his character says goodbye to all; especially Jim

And we all, in turn,
Will be sad to see him leave; but will still yearn
For Michael Scott to come back one day
As that would make us all scream “Hooray!”

But, in the meantime, the show must go on
We must not fear, cry, or yawn
After all, the cast is wonderful and works well
Their acting is great; their comic timing’s swell

Jim, Pam, Toby and Dwight
Will make the transition into “The Office’s” new era light
Furthermore, BJ Novak’s Ryan, Ed Helms’ Andy
And all the other cast members’ characters are neat and dandy
They’ll provide lots of stories, action and joys
For all fans; women and men, girls and boys

And to Steve Carell, I now will say
Good luck and best wishes in every way
Have fun spending more time with your family
And I promise, all your films, I will see
Good night Steve; and now, rest your head
Get nice and comfortable; “That’s what she said!”

Here it Is: The Trailer for "Crazy Stupid Love"

This is the traier for Steve Carell's summer dramedy "Crazy Stupid Love." I am really looking forward to seeing the interactions between Carell and Ryan Gosling; as their exchanges definitely remind me of those in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." It will also be great to see Emma Stone in her first major role since "Easy A." I am not crazy about the casting of Julianne Moore; as I think she is not giving that great of a performance. But watch the trailer and I think that it will overall be nice break from all the action-packed films that are opening this summer!

Here it is: The Trailer for "Bridesmaides"

This is the trailer for "Bridesmaids." I am really looking forward to seeing Kriten Wiig star in this sure-to-be-laugh-out-loud comedy. She is a great comedic actress and her and everyone else's performance is sure to be amazing! Watch the trailer and laugh! This is going to be a great comedy!

Movies I Want To See: Summer Comedies Edition

It’s almost that time of the year again: The summer movie season is almost here! And all the films that are scheduled for wide-release are being given the final touches before they are screened for our enjoyment. And this year, it's sure to be a blast! While there are many big-budget action films, like "Thor" and "Captain America," in store for us throughout the warm months that will dazzle us with many visual effects. But, there are, of course, different sure-to-be-great comedies starring talented performers, top-notch writing, and spot-on comic timing. All these components ensure a strong sense of chemistry amongst the films' stars; thus enabling audiences to cheer for them. Thus, it is with enormous enthusiasm that I say

I Can Not Wait To See The Comedies of Summer 2011!

One such comedy I’m looking forward to seeing is the Judd Apatow-produced “Bridesmaids." The film, which opens May 13, stars Kristen Wiig as Annie; whose best friend Lillian, played by Maya Rudolph, is getting engaged. This causes Kristen Wiig's character, who is still unmarried, to start to lose control of her life; as she fears that she might be losing her best friend. Now as Lillian’s maid of honor, Annie takes her best friend as well as their bridesmaids for a bridal shower in Las Vegas; during which, wild shenanigans will more-than-likely take place. I am really looking forward to seeing Kristen Wiig in her first official lead role; as she is a very talented actress and she possesses great comic timing. And, as they have been great together on "Saturday Night Live", I am anticipating the great chemistry between Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph to be a lot of fun. In addition, it will be great to see a group of comedic actresses participate in “Hangover”-style craziness; as it will certainly lead to many laugh-filled moments as well as moments of pure heart. And, with Kristen Wiig as the star of “Bridesmaids,” the funniness will definitely be grand.

As perfect chemistry is going to be a significant component of the inevitable success of “Bridesmaids,” I am also looking forward to seeing “Horrible Bosses;” opening the weekend of July 8. In director Seth Gordon’s forthcoming R-rated film, Jason Bateman, "Saturday Night Live"'s Jason Sudekis, and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"'s Charlie Day portray three unfortunate employees who work for three awful managers; portrayed Kevin Spacey, Collin Farrell, and Jennifer Anniston respectfully. The trios of workers are so fed up with their superiors’ behavior that they decide perfrom acts of revenge unto them; with inevitably uproarious results. While the overall idea of the movie sounds a tad dark, I am excited to see these performers get in-and-out of many scrapes. And, the combination of Bateman, Sudekis, and Day is sure to display powerful chemistry; as they are all experienced in verbal and physical humor. In addition, the very idea of Spacey, Farrell, and Anniston starring in an R-rated summer comedy sounds very intriguing; as it will be great seeing these big-name stars let loose and have fun playing over-the-top characters. Henceforth, "Horrible Bosses" sounds like it could be an absolute hoot; and I'm looking forward to seeing this inevitably laugh-out-loud comedy.

Another film opening this summer that I am eager to see is the romantic comedy “Crazy Stupid Love;” which actually does not start off on a humorous note. On July 29, Steve Carell stars as Cal Weaver, whose wife Emily, played by Julianne Moore, tells him that she is having an affair and wants a divorce. This unquestionably devastates Steve Carell’s character; but it technically provides the setup for the comic possibilities of the film. Eventually, professional ladies’ man Jacob Palmer, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, helps out Carell’s protagonist by teaching him how to get his life together. This leads to Carell’s character getting a sharp new wardrobe as well as being taught how to approach single women. I am expecting several great exchanges between the two actors; thus once again depicting perfect chemistry. Also, seeing as Ryan Gosling is frequently cast in dramas, I am excited to see the actor speak comedic phrases and take on in humorous situations with Steve Carell. In fact, the scenes in which Gosling and Carell partake in remind me of those the later shared with Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin;” as the jokes are very funny—but also honest. Moreover, fresh off her fantastic performance in "Easy A," Emma Stone portrays Gosling's character's love interest; and I am hoping that she shares memorable scenes with him and Steve Carell that are both funny as well as heartfelt. In other words, I am hoping for a lot of wit and authenticity with this talented band of entertainers. However, judging by the film's trailer, I do think that Amy Adams should have been casted as Carell's character's wife instead of Julianne Moore; as I think that she would give a better and more emotional performance. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing Directors Glenn Ficara and John Requa’s approaching film; as I am sure that it will be funny as well as emotional.

While all these comedies are definitely on my “Must See” list, the film I am most excited for is, of course, “The Hangover: Part II.” While we all expect that the second film will resemble the first plot-wise, the great ensemble consisting of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis definitely makes the sequel worth seeing in theaters. Every moment of “The Hangover” was completely memorable on account of the trio’s great comedic timing, hilarious exchanges, and pitch-perfect chemistry. We were rooting for them every step of the way and savoring every moment. Thus, I cannot wait until Memorial Day Weekend to reunite with our dysfunctional heroes and laugh uncontrollably once more.

Thus, I am more-than-excited about these upcoming comedies. I am looking forward to seeing these movies with my family and friends; sitting in the theaters, holding our sides due to the laughter, and observing grand performances. And once I see these films, I will review them for your reading pleasure. For nothing provides cool refreshment for the summer months than a healthy dose of Nater-Tainment!.

Film Review: "Limitless"

What if you were able to do the impossible? What would you do if you were able to speak any language without any hesitation? What if you were able to write a book a within a matter of days? And what if you were able to figure your way out of any predicament? The possibilities of these scenarios are endless; and I am sure that anyone would love to be able to accomplish all these fantastic feats. I know I would. Well, a few weeks ago I saw the captivating thriller “Limitless”; which features a great performance by star Bradley Cooper, an electrifying story, and riveting surprises. Thus, it is with rapid enthusiasm that I say:

“Limitless” is a Non-Stop Ride with Many Twists and Turns

In Director Neil Burger’s gripping film, Bradley Cooper plays Eddie Morra; a burnt-out writer who does not deliver in his latest writing on time and is consequently dumped by his girlfriend Lindy—portrayed by Abbie Cornish. A short time later, Eddie runs into his brother-in-law Vernon, played by Johnny Whitworth, who happens to be a drug dealer. In an effort to improve Eddie’s life a little, Vernon gives him a trial-pill of NZT-48; which he eventually takes—and all of a sudden, his brain unlocks the power to be utilized to its utmost aptitude; thus giving him the power to write his book at rapid-fire pace as well as gain the motivation to reorganize his disorderly apartment. Unfortunately, the power of the pill wears off by morning; and he knows that he must have more of the pill. Vernon agrees to give him more of the pill; but only if he runs an errand for him. However, once Eddie returns, he finds his brother-in-law dead. After notifying the police, Eddie finds a bag of NZT-48 and departs the apartment; right after he questioned by the police. Upon returning home, he takes a pill; and gives himself a complete makeover. Knowing that he needs money to fund his new life, Eddie eventually starts working in the stock market with his newfound strong intelligence; thus becoming rich. Eddie’s newfound focus also successfully reunites him with Lindy as well as eventually getting hired by powerful entrepreneur Carl Van Loon; played by Robert DeNiro. Unfortunately, the NZT-48 brings some terrible consequences into Eddie’s life; predominately the life-threatening side-effects that take place when experiencing a major lack of the drug-- such as passing out and becoming severely ill. And as the side-effects increase, Eddie must keep his career intact despite many threats on his life by Gennady; a brute, played by Andrew Howard, that Eddie applied to for a loan and is out to collect the money— by any means necessary. And throughout the film, Bradley Cooper gives a striking performance that keeps the audience’s attention whenever he is on screen.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of “Limitless” would be that its overall storyline is full is more-than-intriguing; thus resulting in large amounts of suspense. Right at the start of the film, we are brought into the action; already clutching our seats in high anticipation. And as we originally meet Bradley Cooper’s character, you are already anticipating that the inevitable taking of the drug will bring about big changes to this irresponsible and unmotivated character. And once the minuscule tablet is ingested, a tidal wave of possibilities for both Bradley Cooper’s characters as well as the audience open up. We smile in excitement as Eddie writes his book, make a move on the ladies and soak up joys of living in success and luxury. What’s more, Eddie can figure his way out of any quandary; whether it be arguing with his landlord or making his way out of a fight with a street gang. And, when he renews his relationship with Lindy, we see this once-apathetic loner become committed to keeping his love intact and safe from harm. And, just as we know that nothing ever lasts forever, we, the audience, constantly worry about when he is going to run out of the life-changing capsule; thus we do, in fact, share the fear that Eddie possesses once he realizes that his supply is running out. And, once we see the terrible side-effects of not having enough of the drug, we are constantly rooting for Eddie to score more of the valuable-yet-dangerous medication. And when we see Eddie constantly having to flee from the threat of Andrew Howard’s Gennady, our eyes are forever-focused on the action that’s unraveling on the screen in front of us. Henceforth, as “Limitless” plays, we experience vast feelings of exhilaration as well as significant alarm and trepidation; basically the same emotions Bradley Cooper’s character undertakes throughout the film.

But while the writing is completely solid and the plotline constantly evokes suspense, I believe that a majority of the acting was well-timed and skilled as well. Mostly perfected by star Bradley Cooper; who gives a swaggering-yet –expressive turn as the film’s chief protagonist. Before taking the pill, Cooper is very convincing as a less-than-enthusiastic author; who doesn’t show enough affection when his girlfriend Lindy dumps him. He is completely disheveled; and completely lacks any sense of focus or self-respect. But, once Eddie Morra takes the sacred pill, he transforms into an entirely different person. He’s intelligent, he’s alert on all accounts, and most importantly, he is committed to everything; predominantly turning his life completely around for the better. And, once he is reaping the benefits of the NZT-48, there is a whirl-wind of gusto; as Eddie knows that he can know do anything as he has become entirely perfect. We see him get a complete make-over and become a hit with the ladies as well as a whiz with numbers and the financial world. And Cooper’s greatly affirmative performance makes him appear overzealous at times; as he knows that nothing could possibly stop his seemingly-endless winning streak. But also eager to maintain his ideal life as he becomes financially-secure and happily in love once again with Lindy. It appears that everything is going his way.

However, while his character does emerge over-confident, Bradley Cooper also makes his character appear vulnerable as well. This is made evident when we see the horrific side-effects of the pill; particularly when we see him struggle to keep alive when becoming vastly ill due to a lack of the drug. We also observe him becoming more and more frightful of the constant threats onto his life by Gennady. Eddie is always on the constant watch for his foe; even going so far as to hire bodyguards as well as eventually moving into a high-security apartment. But, throughout the film, Cooper fears for his safety; as well as desperately trying to ensure that he has an endless supply of NZT-48. And, as we watch him struggle to keep alive due to pill withdrawal, we are drawn to Cooper’s emotive performance.

While Bradley Cooper is great as the film’s lead character, the bulk of the supporting cast is quite enthralling as well; particularly Abbie Cornish as Lindy and Andrew Howard as Gennady . Abbie Cornish gives a strong performance as Lindy; who only wants what is best for Bradley Cooper’s character. When we meet Lindy, it is clear that she has had it with Eddie’s behavior and wants him to get his act together. And, when they get back together, the romantic chemistry between the two is more-than-apparent; and you can tell that her character really does care about him. And, when Cornish’s character finds out about Andrew Howard’s malicious character as well as the truth about the pill, we see her fear for Eddie’s life as well as find out her unfavorable sentiments about his taking of the NZT-48. In addition, Andrew Howard gives a good presentation Gennady; whose constantly harassing Eddie. And, once again, I don’t want to spoil anything, but he also gets a tasting of the NZT-48 and that gives him further reason to chase down Eddie; as he wants to further harness the power of the drug for himself. And in order to get what he wants, he comes after Eddie with great force and even purses Lindy in an enthralling chase scene; as she rushes to retrieve Eddie’s pills as he suffers from lack of NZT-48. Therefore, both Cornish and Howard make their respected supporting characters truly believable and further keep us anticipating what happens next.

The only problem I had when watching “Limitless,” however, would be the overall performance by Robert DeNiro’s character of Carl Van Loon; Bradley Cooper’s boss when working for the stock market. This is very below par for me; mainly because I feel that DeNiro is one of the greatest actors in the business. So, naturally, when I found out that he is in this movie, I was excited to see him interact with Bradley Cooper; who is been getting more popular over the past few years. Unfortunately, I was very let down to see the Hollywood legend known as Robert DeNiro give an unenergetic performance as a powerful stock market figure. I expected a great force of energy from DeNiro as he made his presence on the big screen; but I believe that Bradley Cooper’s fast-paced dialogue and performance outshined him in every way. I felt that DeNiro could have given a much more intimidating performance when acting alongside Bradley Cooper; perhaps even being the film’s designated villain. But, ultimately, Andrew Howard’s greatly menacing performance as Gennady stood out more so than DeNiro’s; thus making his appearance in the film not so noteworthy. In fact, I feel that any actor could have played DeNiro’s part in the film; seeing as his enervated act took away from much of the action and lessened the impact of many of the film’s sequences.

All in all, “Limitless” is a quality film; fortified by a riveting story and a quality performance by Bradley Cooper. His enthralling act only strengthens the storyline and overall tone of the film; thus keeping our concentration at all times. Thus, I can honestly say that “Limitless” is definitely one of year’s most stirring films so far; with hardly anything holding it back—with the possible exception of a not-so-amazing performance by Robert DeNiro. Otherwise, “Limitless” really does unlock exhilaration and a good time at the movies.

Here It Is: The Trailer for "The Hangover: Part II"

Here is the trailer for "The Hangover: Part II." I am very excited about seeing this movie. And even though there will be a lotof references to the first movie, I am sure that Director Todd Philips and the talented and hysterical cast will make the movie a fun time for all! I can't wait for Memorial Day Weekend to be here!

Trailer Analysis: "The Hangover: Part II"

I am a big fan of Director Todd Phillips’ 2009 Comic Masterpiece “The Hangover”. This grand opus of cinema was not only gut-bustlingly hilarious; but also a Golden Globe Winning film. Not only do I own the Unrated DVD of “The Hangover”; but whenever it airs on HBO, I savor every minute of its delicious hilarity. I, my family and friends all love this hysterical movie; and we can all say that this is one of the most outstanding comedies made in recent years. However, when it was announced that there was to be a sequel released this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend, I remember thinking to myself: How on Earth could the inspired director and multi-talented cast possibly top themselves with a follow-up? Well, my friends, I have seen the full promo for the soon-to-be-released continuation and I can honestly say that:

“The Hangover: Part II” Is Going To Be Another Laugh-Filled and Exciting Ride

In the trailer, we see the original film’s characters Phil, Doug, Alan, and Stu venture to Bangkok, Thailand for the latter’s own wedding. And when watching the slightly-over-two-minute preview stream, we find that what was once again originally meant to be an enjoyable pre-wedding celebration; has become a complete disaster. Our heroes are now lost in Bangkok and are left with various traces of what took place the night before. And as events unfold, the gang is reunited with their adversary Mr. Chow; once again played with top-notch glee by Ken Jeong.

Image taken from http://www.stardusttrailers.com/gallery_film/The_Hangover_Part_II(110111221419)the-hangover-2-movie-photo-01-550x366.jpg

And, as the preview’s clips fly by in a rapid-fire manner in front of our eyes, it appears that hilarious hijinks are definitely in store this summer.

As a result of the set-up of the trailer, I can sincerely say that I am more-than-eager to see Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifinakas reprise their mismatched-yet-determined characters. Once again, our male leads have to cooperate and put together the pieces of their crazy antics in hopes to arrive to Helms’ character’s wedding. While the scrapes they got into were side-splitting, it was their perfect chemistry that made the first movie so perfect. They have the great ability to play each other both verbally and physically; thus allowing audiences to cheer for them throughout the affair. Plus, they each possess great comedic timing and their ability to keep up with each other’s acting was perfect; thus making them one of the best big-screen comedic ensambles ever put together.

But while the group work great together as a whole, each performer appear to be in top form. Bradley Cooper’s Phil is still the official leader of the group and is the one responsible for keeping the group on their feet. Also, Ed Helms is overly-panicky and frazzled as Stu; once again having some facial damage done to himself—though more significant rather than just a missing tooth. Furthermore, Zach Galifianakis is still utterly disorientated and dense as Alan; who seems to be getting into even more crazy situations in the sequel. Furthermore, as we all remember his more-than-uproarious performance in the first film, it is only fitting that Galifianakis treats viewers to the first big joke in the preview.

Image taken from http://moviesblog.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/hangover2-monkey-575.jpg

Furthermore, it is good to see Justin Bartha reprise his role of Doug; the straight man of the original film. His ability to hold his own while interacting with the core three was impeccable; as he was able to serve as a fully-developed character and a plot device as well. And, as we see in the trailer, it appears that Bartha’s character will be in constant communication with our protagonists as they stumble from one sequence to another.

However, while I am looking forward to seeing “The Hangover Part II” in theaters this summer, the preview does present a few minor concerns. First of all, as I am excited to see Ken Jeong reprise his infamous role of Mr. Chow. However, it appears that he is going to be included in the group’s path-to-discovery. While seeing him in action with Phil, Alan, and Stu could be fun; I am a little skeptical of the logic of the situation.

Image taken from http://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/The-Hangover-part-2.jpg

Another concern that the preview brings forward, is that the film seems to be referencing Philips’ original feat quite frequently. While keeping continuity alive is very important for a sequel, I fear that too many callbacks could be considered overkill and a tad insulting to one’s intelligence; as we are being constantly reminded of events that had previously taken place. Image taken from http://www.icelebz.com/movies/the_hangover_part_ii/images/movie-the_hangover_part_ii-stills-769575734.jpg

Furthermore, there is that question that we are all thinking: why make a sequel to such a great movie? The first installment was so perfectly-crafted that we are worried to see its legacy tarnished by a possibly-and-hastily-put-together follow-up. We all remember treasuring and quoting the great movie in June 2009; and the very notion of producing a second chapter could be thought of as either lazy or desperate to relive the past. After all, we can all remember that old adage: “If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It.” Image taken from http://moviesblog.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/hangover2-photo.jpg

But, perhaps I am being too quick to judge Todd Philips’ directing. As the original movie introduced us all to this band of misfits, a sequel does allow us to sit back and enjoy as our dysfunctional heroes pick up the pieces from another night gone wrong; thus inducing us to laugh even harder than we did back in 2009. In addition, as the movie is now taking place in Thailand, the change in scenery offers a fresh change of pace; thus making our main characters even more out-of-their-element and an opportunity to explore new lands on their quest to salvation. In other words: it’s a whole new kind of party.

And that’s basically how I feel about seeing “The Hangover: Part II”. I wholeheartedly loved Phillips’ grand comedic oeuvre and I look forward to seeing our comedic cast embark on another hilarious and crazy romp. After all, I’m sure that this will be another celebration that will be worth remembering for years to come.
