Prior to the show, I will be posting a few thoughts on the episode. I will be also commenting on the fact that Seth Meyers, who has been a castmember since 2001 and has been anchoring “Weekend Update” since fall of 2006, will be leaving the show to take over hosting duties of NBC's “Late Night” on February 24th, 2014.

Thank you all for following my blog tonight.

Thank you all for following my blog tonight and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment! Good night, everybody!

Well, that's basically the show

Wow! I was wrong. That was really Michael Cera in the "Her" parody. I'm surprised they got him for that quick of a cameo. Other than that, this was still a very weak show.

What a weak show. The monologue was the very best part of the show.

This is just plain bad!!!

The writing has been very bad tonight

This is a very fitting end to a very weak show. Jonah Hill wasn't even that great of a host tonight.

Oh great. They brought back Cecily Strong's and Vanessa Bayer's former porn star characters

I'm REALLY tired of these sketches. they basically do the same thing everytime. And they are basically rehashing vehicle-interjecting (through Jonah Hill's character) from when Justin Timberlake hosted in March of 2013. This sketch is a TURE REHASH!!!!!!

We are back!

Commercials are on now

There isn't much left to air tonight.

This episode wasn't very good so far tonight

The monologue and Bastille were the best parts of the show so far tonight.

I like this song so far. Bastille has been one of the better musical guests this season

The writing in the sketch wasn't bad. This sketch was a good showcase for Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney

And now, Bastille is on.

The writing isn't bad. This sketch is a good showcase for Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney

Good to see Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney star in a sketch together

They have good chemistry. This is an interesting sketch. Good to see them with Jonah Hill.

The show will be back after the commercials

Commercials are on now

Talk about beating a "joke" to death

That was a REALLY BAD sketch!!! Just awful!

This sketch is really dumb

Just Jonah Hill screaming a lot off camera. This is one of the reasons why I'm not a big Jonah Hill fan: he can be very loud in his roles. This is just REALLY bad!

Yep. Just basically Jonah Hill screaming in the bathroom

I have a feeling that will be the main joke of the sketch

I have a bad feeling about this sketch

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

They are doing a parody of the movie "Her"

Jonan Hill is playing Joaquin Phoenix's character. the joke about the computer talking like Hill's chacter, thus causing him to fall in love with himself, is a little silly. But I will say thatit was a well-done parody-- despite the obvious jokes. I did like the idea of Taran Killam playing Michael Cera as the surrogate.

The joke about about the horse attacking Hill's and McKinnon's character isn't very funny

This is just really bad physical comedy

Nasim Pedrad played this character whenever Tina Fey hosted. She would be Fey's daughter who's afraid to make friends

At least they are doing something different with the character

We are back!!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Aside from Kate McKinnon and Seth Meyers' two Justin Bieber jokes,

this was a weak edition of "Weekend Update"

I like how her character said the dog she dated was out of her league

Kate McKinnon has been having a GREAT season!! I wish she would be Cecily Strong's co-anchor. She would be a wonderful edition for 'Update'.

Kate McKinnon is always good whenever she's on 'Update'

She's giving a good performance as her Russian character

I'm a little worried about how Cecily Strong will do on "Update" once Seth Meyers leaves

I hear that she will be getting a co-anchor: Head Writer Colin Jost will be on 'Update' with her.

This segment isn't very funny

There's nothing special about Kenan Thompson's performance at all

The writing for Thompson's segment isn't very funny

Kenan Thompson on "Weekend Update" as the police officer who arrested Justin Bieber

He's been on "Update" a bit too much this season.

This is Seth Meyers' second-to-last edition of "Weekend Update"

Seth Meyers' Justin Bieber jokes were funny

We are back with "Weekend Update"

Commercials are on now

"Weekend Update" should be coming up next.

That was a good performance

This is a good performance

I've heard this song before on the radio

I actually like this song

we are back!!!

Bastille's first song is coming up

Commercials are on now

So far, the monologue has been the best part of the show so far

What the heck was that?

That sketch was beyond dumb. The whole joke was that Jonah Hill's character just clogged the toilet and he didn't want to admit it.

I made a mistake. This is the third game show sketch to air this season

The whole 'clogging of the toilet' thing isn't very funny

Who's writing this?

This is a very silly idea for a sketch

This is just plain ridiculous

Is the whole sketch going to be them trying to figure out who clogged the toilet?

A new game show sketch

This is the second game show sketch they did this season

We are back!!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Melissa McCarthy is hosting nrext week. She just hosted last April

Next week is also Seth Meyers' last show

That shooting scene wasn't very funny

Abrupt way of ending the sketch.

This part is humorous

Taran Killam's also alright in this sketch

It's just that the writing isn't very funny.

Jat Pharoah and Kenan Thompson are performing alright

But this sketch just isn't very funny.

This is a strange pre-recorded piece

That was alright but it was basically just a carbon copy with a minor difference

I liked Jonah Hill's "Frozen" joke

I wish they would change up the format of this sketch

And put Jonah Hill's character in a different situation at another location

Jonah Hill does alright as this character

Though it's basically a rehash of the previous installments. Only Bill Hader isn't there to play his father

Basically Jonah Hill is playing a six-year-old boy who acts like a Jewish Stand-up comic

Jonah Hill plays this character whenever he's on

Bill Hader played his father. Though he's not on the show anymore unfortunately

We are back!!!

First sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

This is very good!

They have good chemistry. And this "Titanic" parody is pretty funny. That was a good monologue!

I like DiCaprio basically just telling him to act more humble

I like Jonah Hill basically sucking up to DiCaprio

He's never been on SNL before until now

I always wished he would host.

LEONARDO DI CAPRIO!!!!!

I always like Taran Killam's Brad Pitt impression

Though the overall joke is that the audience is more interested in leo DiCaprio than JonahHll.

He got a second Academy Award Nomination for his performance in "The Wolf of Wall Street"

I haven't seen the movie. But I would like to see it.

I'm not the biggest fan of Jonah Hill

This is Jonah Hill's third time hosting SNL

I jush hope the sketches are good tonight

I really hope tonight's show is good

That was a pretty short opening

It felt a little rushed to me; especially the ending

Jay Pharoah as the ice skater was pretty humorous

The doubles skating duo is alright. But the jokes is that their body movements are unusual

This is basically relying on the joke that the figure skater is oI verweight

I like Taran Killam's impression of Scott Hamilton though

A cold opening parodying figure skating coverage

And We Are Live....NOW!!!

It's Almost That Time!

My Review of Drake's Episode of "Saturday Night Live" As Well As Some Brief Statements About Tonight

I'm going to do something different with this mini-review of this past weekend's episode of “Saturday Night Live”; which featured Guest Host and Musical Guest Drake. I'm going to talk about the main positives and negatives of the episode. Also, I'm only going to be addressing certain sketches and performances. I promise that my review of tonight's episode will be more in-depth.

And now, here's my review:

Section One: the Positives

I was very happy with Drake's overall acting in the sketches. Right when he appeared in the “Piers Moran Live” cold opening as Alex Rodriguez, I had the feeling that Drake would be a good ghost. I got some laughs from Drake's performance as Rodriguez; particularly how his cell-phone auto-correct is what got him in legal trouble-- as his messages were sent out with incorrect wording. I also got a laugh when Drake's portrayal of Rodriguez said that he was going to sue his cell phone as a way to deal with his scandal.

Drake's performance in the monologue was also quite good, Right when he appeared on stage, he appeared very confident. He also had a good stage presence and he made the transition into the sketch part of the monologue quite well. It should be mentioned that the overall idea of Drake reminiscing his Bar Mitzvah was a creative idea for the monologue, Drake also had some good lines as well; particularly when he said “Whazzup” and explained that he was quoting the Budweiser Frogs and telling everyone that it was 1999 (the year he had his Bar Mitzvah). In addition, Drake gave a good performance when he was doing his rap; even if the writing wasn't great. The overall idea of the monologue was creative, even if the writing wasn't that great,

Drake also performed very well in the sketches. He had good chemistry with the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers. And even when the writing was at its worst, Drake was able to improve the quality of the sketches. For instance, Drake did very well in a sketch when he played the host of an “Indiana Jones” attraction at a theme park and “Saturday Night Live” Castmember Nasim Pedrad played a foreign kid named “Raheet.” Throughout the sketch, Pedrad's character kept saying his name over and over; becoming the central joke of the sketch. Drake's performance, however, gave the better performance as his character tried extremely hard to keep to keep Nasim Pedrad's character focused at all times when participating in the show. Drake brought a lot of energy to the sketch and he managed to bring forward some laughs as his character-- particularly when he said that for anyone who misses the show, they can see it “on Youtube in a couple of days.” Drake managed to bring a lot of life to the sketches when the writing was particularly not very good. Drake manages his character to remain enthusiastic throughout the whole sketch. In short terms, Drake was the absolute highlight of this sketch,

In addition, Drake proved to be good at impressions. For instance, during the “Nancy Grace” sketch, Drake pulled off a very good impression of comedian Katt Williams. Drake had the voice down well and did well mimicking the comedian's facial expressions. What's more, Drake gave good performances during the “Hip Hop Classics” sketch; particularly when portraying rapper L'il Wayne as “Steve Urkel” in a scene from an early episode of “Family Matters.” Drake brought forward good laughs in his sketches, and this was no exception.

In short terms, I was very happy with Drake's performances as the show's show. He had very good comedic chemistry wit everybody and he acted very well. In addition, his musical performances were good; though I liked his second song a bit better than his first one. Nevertheless, I was very happy with Drake's acting and I would like to see him host again.

Other Positives

There were some other parts of the show that I liked as well. For instance, I REALLY thought that Kate McKinnon's impression of Justin Bieber in the “piers Morgan Live” sketch was VERY FUNNY. She mimicked the singer's speaking voice perfectly and did a GREAT job imitating his mannerisms as well. In addition, Kate McKinnon looked SO MUCH like Justin Beiber that I first though he was making a surprise appearance during the cold opening. McKinnon's performance was great and was, along with Drake's performance as the show's host, probably the best part of the show,

In addition, I got some laughs out of Vanessa Bayer's appearance on “Weekend Update” as Golden Globe Winner Jacqueline Bisset. The idea of Bayer's portrayal of Bisset being confused as to how to get to the “Update” desk to deliver a commentary was humorous; mainly due to the “Saturday Night Live” castmember''s facial reactions and Seth Meyers' constant attempts to get her attention. The idea of constantly checking in with Bayer's Jacqueline Bisset throughout “Weekend Update” was an interesting idea and it was worthy of laughter.

Some Negatives:

The overall writing for the episode is the main negative of this episode. The show's writing just isn't very good this season. For instance, the writing staff is basically rehashing sketches from earlier episodes from the season; as evident from the appearances of the “Mornin' Miami” sketch as well as the return of Vanessa Bayer's awkward poetry teacher “Ms. Meadows.” It should be mentioned that both sketches first appeared during the Miley Cyrus episode from this past October. The poetry class sketch was basically a simple rehash: Vanessa Bayer's character over-excitedly tries to get her students to write verses on the spot. And the format of the sketch was basically the same as before; leading up to Drake's character being in love with Vanessa Bayer's “Ms. Meadows” at the end of the sketch. The basic joke was the same as Miley Cyrus' sketch; with her character also being in love with Bayer's character as well. The whole sketch had no surprises whatsoever and there wasn't any real genuine humor at all. In addition, the “Mornin' Miami” sketch was basically just a carbon-copy as well; with Kate McKinnon's and Bobby Moynihan's characters basically offering up bizarre news headlines during a promo shoot. The only difference in this edition was that Drake was present instead of Miley Cyrus; who played the third news anchor. While all three offered good performances, the execution of the sketch offered no surprises at all. This is a problem of the writing staff. They are relying on rehashing sketches in an attempt to fill up space in sketches. This is very disappointing and I'm really worried that we'll be seeing more of this practice as the season progresses.

My other central negative of the te episode came from “Weekend Update.” Other than Vanessa Bayer's performance as Golden Globe Winner Jacqueline Bisset, there wasn't anything memorable at all. Seth Meyers' and Cecily Strong's jokes weren't very funny and it seemed like they didn't have a lot of news stories during this particular installment of “Weekend Update” at all. In addition, even though I like Nasim Pedrad's impression of Arianna Huffington, it should be said that her segment didn't have any memorable lines at all. There wasn't any really finny dialogue at all and I'm tired of Nasim Pedrad's Arianna Huffington hitting on Seth Meyers. The segment played out exactly like previous ones; thus causing there to be nothing special at all. With only two more weeks on the show, I am truly hoping that Seth Meyers' final hosting stints of “Weekend Update” offer up some memorable moments.

And there you go, That concludes my review of Drake's episode of “Saturday Night Live.” As said before, I was very impressed with Drake's performance as the host and I hope he appears on the show again. I just hope he gets better writing whenever he hosts again.

.
And now, we get ready for tonight's episode; which will feature Jonah Hill hosting for his third time. Tonight, he is promoting his Academy Award Nominated performance in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Now, I didn't see the movie, but I hear he did well well his performance. I do think he did a decent job performing in “Moneyball”; for which he received his first Academy Award nomination. I hope tonight's show is good; though the writing for his previous hosting stint, which took place on March 10, 2012, was not very good at all. The only parts of his show that I liked were his monologue, which basically poked fun at the actor getting an ego after getting his Academy Award nomination only to be humbled when two-time Oscar-Winner Tom Hanks showed up with his two awards, as well as the closing sketch; during which he played a husband surprising his wife, played by Kristen Wiig, with a full orchestra, played by the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers, performing Coolio's hit song “C U When U Get There.” Jonah Hill gave a humorous performance as the over-eager husband and he had good chemistry. with Kristen Wiig throughout the shetch. The whole bit was quite humorous and it was a good way to close the show. But nevertheless, Jonah Hill is not one of my favorite comedic performers. As seen by his involvement in R-rated comedies like 2007's “Superbad” and 2012's “21 Jump Street,” Hill spends a lot of time in his movies cursing out loud and acting in an over-the-top manner in most of the scenes. But I will say this: he has good comedic chemistry with his co-stars; particularly with Michael Cera in “Superbad” and Channing Tatum in “21 Jump Street.” In addition, he interacts well with the “Saturday Night Live” cast whenever he hosts. So, hopefully, the show is good tonight.

So, beginning at 11:30pm, I will be blogging the show. I will be commenting on the performances, the writing, the sketches, and anything else that comes to mind. I will also be paying close attention to Jonah Hill's acting in the sketches and will also determine just how genuinely funny his performances will be.

So, be sure to have your televisions set to NBC by 11:30pm and have my blog up on your computers. Make sure to keep refreshing your computer screens so you can see my latest comments throughout the show. That concludes my live-blogging coverage. Thank you all for following my blog tonight.

My review of the show will be up sometime this week. Thank you all once again and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment! Good night everybody!

Well, that's basically the show

Drake wasn't a bad host. He did alright with the cast. The writing just wasn't great at all. I Shasheer Zamata did a good job for her first show.

I liked that. short film. It was cute.

Not a bad way to end the episode.

A "GoodNeighbor" short!

I always enjoy the back-and-forth between Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney. I REALLY like this short.

The show is practically over

Unless they have one small final sketch, I guess.

I liked Drake's character refusing to "twerk"

That wasn't a bad sketch. I just wish that the writers would stop their habit of making almost every sketch reoccurring.

Bobby Moynihan, Kate McKinnon and Drake are giving good performances

But why did they have to make this sketch reoccurring? I liked the first installment. This isn't bad. But I wish the writers would make more original sketches.

They're bringing back the "Good Morning Miami" sketch from the Miley Cyrus show

They REALLY are making every sketch into a reoccurring one now.

we are back with the show

Commercials are on now

I liked Drake's "tell Lorne to go to commercial break now"

I wonder if that was an ablib by Drake. I thought that was amusing.

This performance isn't bad

This show has suffered from a case of RBW--- "Really Bad Writing"! Hopefully that sketch or two are good.

This song isn't bad

I like it better than his first one

Drake's second performance

I like the blue light effect here.

We are back with more of the show

Commercials are on right now

This show hasn't been very great at all

That "ending" was just abrupt. Just a very badly written sketch.

This sketch isn't vry funnt

Drake is doing alright with the material. Though there's hardly any genuine humor in this sketch.

Vanessa Bayer's performance as this character is alright

But this sketch is basically just a rehash of the first installment which aired during Miley Cyrus' episode.

They're bring back Vanessa Bayer's poetry teacher?

Seems like they are making every character into a reoccurring one now. Lazy writing!!!!!

We are back!

next sketch is coming up

Drake is the funniest part of the sketch

I liked how he said that the whole performance will probably be up on Toutube in a few days.

Drake is doing a good job as the straightman of the sketch

Pedrad is giving a good performance. Though the joke of her keep saying her name isn't very funny. Just bad writing in coming up with a with a new character

Did Nasim Pedrad ever play this character before?

Her character seems familiar.

This looks like it could be a good sketch

We are back!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Bayer's Jacqueline Bisset being cut off was alright

Though that was a little predictable. This wasn't a great edition of "Update." I feel like there weren't a lot of jokes. And I'm guessing Seth Meyers only has two more editions of "Weekend Update" left before he leaves.

Seth Meyers' and Cecily Strong's jokes haven't been that great

I like that Bayer's Jacqueline Bisset keeps appearing throughout "Update"

Pedrad's doing alright with the material

Vanessa Bayer is humorous as Jacqueline Bisset

I like Nasim Pedrad's impression of Arianna Huffington. Though her writing isn't very funny. She's giving a decent performance though

I really hope Seth Meyers gets good writers when he takes over hosting "Late Night"

We are back with "Weekend Update"

Commercials are on now

"Weekend Update" is coming up

That was an abrupt ending to the song

Drake's an alright rapper. This song isn't amazing at all.

In all honesty, this song isn't really that great

I like that SNL is doing more special things for its musical performances this season

The orange lighting effect is pretty good. Drake's rapping is alright.

We are back with Drake!

The show will be back soon

Drake's first musical performance should be after this commercial break

I liked Drake's comment that he called her when he first met Bryant's character

That ending was a tad abrupt. Though I did like the joke that Bryant's character is 25. This wasn't a terrible sketch. The writing just had to be a little better.

Drake is doing well with this sketch

This sketch is dragging just a bit

Aidy Bryant's performance isn't bad, the writing just isn't very funny

Though the joke of Aidy Bryant's character being in love with the father isn't very funny

This seems like it could be a good showcase for all the female castmembers

Drake's performance as the father wasn't bad

Drake's doing a good job with that video

This isn't a bad music video parody

Though that sex sequence is a bit too over the top

Shasheer Zamata is a decent performer so far

This is Drake's best sketch so far

He REALLY does a good impression of Katt Williams.

Drake does a good impression of Katt Williams

He's doing a good job mimicking his voice.

I like Kate McKinnon's character.

She's been doing well with the matterial she is given. I liked her "Breaking Bad" comments

A parody of "Nancy Grace"

We are back

Next sket ch is coming up

Commercials are on now

This show has experienced very weak writing so far

The joke about Sway's hat being a live was humorous

That wasn't an entirely good sketch.

Drake's Jay-Z impression was alright

I also liked Beck Bennett's impression of Mr. Wizzard.

This sketch is just plain bad

The idea of Hup Hop stars getting their early appearances on '90s shows is an teresting idea. The writing is bad though. Just a lot of screaming

This is terrible. Just some gun shots as a joke

Drake's Urkel impression was alright

That was just plain strange

Kenan Thompson as Sway

This could be a good sketch

We are back!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now.

This is lazy writing at its finest

Drake is giving a decent performance. The writing is just plain bad

I'm sorry. This isn't very funny

Just a bunch of Jewish stereotype humor.

Shasheer Zamata makes her sketch appearance on SNL

I will say this is an interesting idea for a monologue

Interesting fact: He was on "Degrassi" for seven years

I liked his joke about apologizing for introducing the concept of "Yolo"

He seems comfortable on stage

I hope Drake gets good comedic sketches

That opening wasn't that great

But Kate McKinnon's impression of Justin Beiber was pretty funny. She's a very good comedic performer.

Him suing his phone was funny

I meant to say the writing given to him isn't that great

Drake as Alex Rodriguez

Surrised to see him in the opening. His writing isn't great

Moynihan's 'chemical smells' and his "Forgedabouti5t" line were alright

I had a feeling Bobby Moynihan would play Governor Chris Christie

Taran Killam brings back his Piers Morgan impression

We Are Live.....NOW!!!!!

It's Almost That Time!

From the Mind of Nate: A Quick Look at Season Thirty-Nine of "Saturday Night Live" So Far

NBC's “Saturday Night Live” is in a state of mediocrity. As the long-running variety series returns from its winter break, the current quality of writing is not good at all. The first ten episodes of the season have ranged from being just “alright to “downright bad.” The large cast, which consists of ten regular castmembers and six featured players, have been allotted many sketches that consist of poor premises. Juvenile humor, and predictable punchlines. As you've seen from my previous live-blogging sessions, I haven't been very happy with the a majority of sketches the writers have come up with. Returning hosts, like Former Castmember Tina Fey, who appeared on the season on September 28th, 2013 and celebrated her fourth time hosting, as well as John Goodman, who returned to emcee the program for the first time since November 3rd, 2001 and was was hosting for his thirteenth time, were given sketches that just weren't funny at all. The latter of the two hosted on December 14th and was “welcomed back” with an episode that consisted of terrible writing and barely any laugh-worthy moments at all. First time hosts like Edward Norton, who hosted on October 26th, and Kerry Washington, who emceed the program on November 2nd, were given only one or two legitimately sketches. Both hosts did perform well though; and Washington especially made the sketches better through her comedic timing and chemistry with the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers. Nevertheless, all four hosts were given weak material and thus appeared on some of the weakest episodes of the season. Though it should be mentioned that Miley Cyrus, who hosted on October 5th, 2013,
would host the absolute worst episode of the season so far; mostly due to her weak sketch acting skills and that she provided no humor whatsoever through her performances. But all that aside, many of this season's episodes haven't been very good at all.

Image of Miley Cyrus taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/13/13bmono.phtml

Though I will say that there have been three episodes that have stood out the most this season so far. For instance, on December 7th, Paul Rudd hosted for his third time and brought along his “Anchorman 2” co-stars Will Ferrell, David koechner, and Steve Carell for a fun monologue where all four sang “Afternoon Delight” with One Direction; who was serving as the evening's musical guest. In addition, Rudd did quite well in the evening's sketches; particularly in a pre-filmed sketch where he played an adult fan of One Direction who was interacting with a crowd filled with young girls outside a concert building where the band was performing. Rudd was very funny interacting with the young fans; especially when he was challenging them to trivia questions about the band. My second favorite episode of the season aired on November 16th, 2013 and featured Lady Gaga; who was serving as both the host and musical guest. Lady Gaga proved to be a very good host and wasn't afraid to poke fun at herself in the sketches; especially in a commercial-parody for a DVD of musical performances containing bloopers. One of which featured the singer performing and dancing to Madonna's hit song “express Yourself” when she meant to be singing her own song “Born This Way”; thus basically poking fun at the fact that both songs sound similar. In addition, Lady Gaga proved to be very funny in a sketch where she played a washed-up version of herself in 2065; where she was trying to remind a building repairman, played by “Saturday Night Live” Castmember Kenan Thompson, who she was and what songs she was famous for. The sketch was fun to watch and I enjoyed Lady Gaga's endearing performance. But while Lady Gaga a very good host, it was Former “Saturday Night Live” Castmember Jimmy Fallon who hosted the best show of the season so far. Hosting on December 21st, 2013, Fallon was joined by Five-Time “Saturday Night Live” and his real-life good friend Justin Timberlake; who served as the evening's musical guest. It was great fun seeing Fallon and Timberlake interact in sketches together; as the show's opening, where both performers played dancing wrapping paper store mascots proved to be one of the best openings of the season due to their sheer energy and comedic timing. But the best sketch of the episode consisted a parody of the game show “Celebrity Family Feud”; during which Jimmy Fallon played Jim Parsons, who was the lead player in a team of celebrities from CBS comedies, all played by “Saturday Night Live” castmembers-- and the opposing team was NBC celebrities-- led by “Jimmy Fallon”-- played by Justin Timberlake-- who nailed the former “Saturday Night Live” castmember's enthusiastic way of speaking as well as his lively body movements. Timberlake's performance was so funny that he brought the real-life Jimmy Fallon to such a state of laughter that he had difficulty maintaining his celebrity impression for at least a minute. And even though the quality of the writing wasn't so great in the last half hour of the episode, Fallon's performances as the show's host were fun; especially during a musical sketch where he sang “Baby It's Cold Outside” with “Saturday Night Live” castmember Cecily Strong. The show was fun to watch and Fallon proved to be the best host of the season so far.

While the performances of the hosts of “Saturday Night Live”'s thirty-ninth season have been an important factor of the show's quality, the acting of the castmembers are also worth mentioning. Some castmembers have provided genuinely funny performances in sketches while others haven't been so great at all. Kenan Thompson, for instance, is someone that I haven't been very happy with this season. Now in his eleventh season on the show, Thompson, for some reason, has become the new go-to-guy for leading sketches. I have mentioned this in lots of my episode reviews already. In many of the episodes so far this season, it seems as if Kenan Thompson has appeared in more sketches than anyone. His constant overacting is very grating and his constant mugging at the camera is extremely tired. There have probably been only two or three sketches this season where he's been legitimately funny; one of which was the sketch from the November 16th episode where Lady Gaga played a future version of herself and Thompson played the hotel's handyman. Nevertheless, Kenan Thompson's over-exposure has been another reason why this season hasn't been very memorable so far. In addition, while she's been alright in some sketches, Cecily Strong hasn't been a very great co-anchor on “Weekend Update” for Fellow Castmember Seth Meyers; who will be leaving the variety show in the next few weeks so he can take over hosting “Late Night” on February 24th when Jimmy Fallon; who will be hosting “The Tonight Show” starting February 17th. Cecily Strong, who started co-anchoring “Weekend Update” at the start of the season hasn't done an impressive job co-anchoring the news segment; as her comic delivery has proven to be quite bland most of the time. In addition, I've noticed that she sometimes rushes from one joke to the next; thus not allowing enough time for the audience to fully get the punchlines. Once Meyers leaves, I'm a little worried about how Cecily Strong will do if she's the sole anchor of “Weekend Update”. Hopefully, she gets paired up with a fellow castmember-- like Kate McKinnon-- who has proven to be an adept comedic performer. I think the two would have keen comedic chemistry and together, they could make “Weekend Update” a lot of fun.

And speaking of Kate McKinnon, I have to say that she has definitely been one of my favorite “Saturday Night Live” castmember this season. She has been a very reliable performer in sketches and has great chemistry with her fellow castmembers. In addition, McKinnon has brought forward some very good impressions. For instance, I really enjoyed seeing McKinnon impersonate Kathleen Sebelius; the Secretary of Health under President Barack Obama. In a cold opening that took place on October 26th, McKinnon's portrayal of Kathleen Sebelius offered some tips meant to help people navigate around healthcare.gov such as advising people to select different languages in an attempt to work around the website as well as offering other similar websites that people can go on to get health advice. McKinnon has also done well on “Weekend Update” playing guest commentators such as portraying German Chancellor Angela Merkel; who, in a segment that aired on November 2nd, did not like the fact that the government was spying on her cell phone use, and was thus having to delete her search history; which included links to videos of cats playing as well as pictures of “Jason Segel with no shirt”. Henceforth, McKinnon has provided much laughs this season and has been a very good sketch comedy performer.

I have also been impressed with Taran Killam; who has proven to be a good sketch performer as well. I've noticed that even when the writing is weak, Killam's comedic performance has been able to improve the quality of sketches and “Weekend Update” segments. For instance, this past November, Killam has presented us with a new character-- 18th cetury speech critic “Jebidiah Atkinson”; a very cynical reviewer who fails to find pleasure in anything. In the character's two appearances so far this season, Killam has provides a biting commentary on different topics; wush as political speeches during his first time on November 16th and holiday specials during a segment that took place on December 7th. In his two appearances as “Jebidiah Atkinson”, Killam pokes fun at the segment while staying in character; such as poking fun at the poor writing of a review in his first appearance and later on jesting during his December 7th appearance over the fact that he only appeared on the show three weeks ago as well as saying to Set Meyers “Run things into the ground much?”-- thus riffing on “Saturday Night Live”'s habit of bringing back characters and sketches too quickly. The segments have been fun despite the weak writing of the jokes and Killam's performance makes the quality better. In addition, Taran Killam has been a good impressionist as well; as seen by his portrayal of Academy Award Winner Christoph Waltz, during a pre-filmed commercial parody of “celebrity” screen tests for the upcoming “50 Shades of Gray” movie, as well as a funny impression of Ashton Kutcher in the “Celebrity Family Feud” sketch from the December 21st episode with Guest Host Jimmy Fallon. I have also been impressed with Jay Pharoah; whose impression of President Barack Obama has improved, as he's managed to get a tighter hold on mimicking his vocal mannerisms. In addition, Pharoah has brought forward a good impression of Shaquille; as he's managed to mimic the former basketball player's deep voice as well as the way his eyes appear to be crossed. I've also found Pharoah's sketch comedy performance to be better as well; as he appears to have gained more confidence on stage and is doing a much better job interacting with his fellow castmembers. Thus, the performances of the cast are very important to consider as the season is now in it's midseason point.

I will also say that it's important to bring up the fact that we have six new performers as well. Since the start of this season, we've had six new people on the cast-- Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O'Brien, Noel Wells, and Brooks Wheelan, Of the six new castmembers, it should be said that Beck Bennett has proven to be the one who has been the most reliable of a performer. He has proven to be a good straightman in sketches, as seen in his performance as a confused army Sargent in a sketch that aired on the October 12th episode, in which Guest Host Bruce Willis; who played a soldier who was outlining his movie blockbuster-style for fighting terrorist soldiers during a military strike. In addition, Beck Bennett has probably starred in one of the season's best sketches, during which he played "Richard Patterson"; the boss of a major corporation; who, despite being very smart, had the body and mannerisms of a baby. Throughout the sketch, Bennett mimicked the actions of an infant perfectly- from sucking the thumb of a new employee, played by Guest Host Josh Hutcherson, to almost falling over in an attempt to walk upright. I am truly hoping that Beck Bennett gets to do more as the season progresses.

The other featured players have been okay so far; though they haven't done a lot on the show. Noel Wells has brought forward some good impressions; particularly one of “Girls” star Lena Dunham—as seen in a parody of her HBO series that featured Guest Host Tina Fey as a girl from Iran who had her share of complaints. In addition, John Milhiser has proven to be a good physical comedian; as seen from a sketch where he, along with Guest Host Lady Gaga, played two over-passionate parents who got so carried away coaching their young daughter during a school performance, that they started dancing and putting on a show of their own in the audience; thus making fools of themselves. The sketch was humorous; though Milhiser hasn't done a lot since that show on November 16th. The other featured players haven't done a lot of noteworthy stuff on the show so far; though hopefully they get to do more during the second half of the season. It should be mentioned that we are getting another featured player tonight-- Sasheer Zamata. She is joining the show as the seventh featured player as well as the show's first African-American castmember to be on the show since Ellen Cleghorn; who was a castmember from 1991 to 1995. With so may castmembers on the show, I'm a little worried that some castmembers won;t get to do that much on the show. Hopefully this isn't the case and everyone gets the chance to do something.

And here we are. “Saturday Night :Live" returns tonight with Drake; who will be serving as both the Guest Host and Musical Guest. I hope he gets good sketches and that he gets the opportunity to provide us with some good laughs.
I will be live-blogging “Saturday Night Live”; which will feature Drake as both the evening's host and musical gues. As usual, I will be commenting on the sketches, the performances, the writing, and anything else that comes to mind. I will be examining the chemistry between Drake and the castmembers as well as how he is doing with the sketches. I am curious to see what sketches Drake will get. Hopefully, the writers create good premises for him.
