From the Mind of Nate: My Views on Ed Helms' Andy Bernard as the New Regional Manager of "The Office"

NOTE: There are some spoilers present throughout the following article;especially when the first two episodes of "The Office's" Eighth Season are discussed. So just a word of caution.

Our questions have finally been answered! On Thursday, September 22, 2011, we finally learned which character on “The Office,” now in its 8th Season, will be the new Regional Manger of Dunder Mifflin Paper in Scranton, Pennsylvania; a major responsibility that had been carried by Michael Scott; the unorthodox-but-well-meaning character portrayed by Steve Carell from March 2005 until this past April. Since Summer 2011, we were wondering who will be taking the job. Would it be Raiin Wilson's Dwight Schrute; the resident over-perfectionist of the workplace? Or would it be Craig Robinson's Darryl Philbin; the former-warehouse-forman-turned-office worker? Or would it be Robert California; James Spader’s powerfully-persuasive businessman? . While the later is now the newly-official CEO of the entire company; the Season Premier revealed that the replacement for Steve Carell's character would be Andy Bernard; the workplace's Former Regional Director of Sales-- played delightfully by Ed Helms. The actor, who is widely known as panicky dentist Stu Price in “The Hangover” films, is now taking on the show's role that made Steve Carell famous. And, it is obvious that the pressure is on for the character; seeing as this is a major responsiblity. And, in turn, it is a major task for Ed Helms; who first appeared as the character at the start of "The Office's" third season. Fortunately, Helms has treated us to a performance over the past few years that has been both comical and endearing. Thus, I can say without any hesitation:

I Am Very Happy With Ed Helms' Andy Bernard as the New Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton Branch!

Even though I am very satisfied with the decision, it is important to mention that Ed Helms' character has not always been the way he is now. In fact, the charming and sensitive demeanor he currently exhibits is nothing like the one he possessed when we first meet him. Upon first meeting him in the Season Three Premier, Ed Helms' Andy Bernard works at the Stamford Branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper; at which he exhibits a gung-ho attitude and a thirst for competition. He is constantly bragging to his co-workers about his job performance as well as his musical talents; to which everyone ignores-- including John Krasinki's Jim Halpert, who has transferred to Stamford for personal reasons. Eventually, the Stamford branch closes; leading to Helms' Andy Bernard, John Krasinki's Jim Halpert, and a handful of other employees re-locate to Scranton's branch. Upon arriving, Helms' character makes it clear that he wants to move up the business leader; leading to a competition withRaiin Wilson's Dwight Schrute for the approval of Steve Carell's Michael Scott. for the approval of Steve Carell's Michael Scott Eventually, Helms' character gets inside Michael Scott's head; making him think that Dwight Schrute is attempting to make a power grab; resulting in the later getting fired. Soon after, however, as a result of a prank pulled by John Krasinski's Jim Halpert and Jenna Fisher's Pam Beazley, Ed Helms' Andy Bernard, in a moment of sudden rage, punches a hole in the wall; much to everyone's shock. This leads to Steve Carell’s Michael Scott bringing Dwight Schrute back to the workplace and sending Andy Bernard to anger management. This whole scenario is completely unsettling; seeing as the character will eventually become the new Regional Manager of the Stamford Branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper. How on Earth could this be the case?

Fortunately, however, this is when everything changes. Upon returning from anger management towards the end of Season Three, there is a complete change of attitude for Ed Helms' character. Instead of a thirst for competition and power, Andy Bernard now has a desire for friendship and forgiveness. This includes trying to apologize to Raiin Wilson's Dwight Schrute; who is evidently still angry for getting him fired. As "The Office's" Fourth Season progresses, Ed Helms' Andy Bernard tries to make friends with his co-workers; which is very hard- seeing as many them don't take him seriously. This is also the season where the character falls in love with Angela Kinsey's Angela Martin; the overly-strict accountant of the workplace. It should be mentioned that Angela Martin had broken-up with Raiin Wilson's Dwight Schrute after descreetly dating for two years. Throughout the season, Ed Helms' character desperately tries to win her affections. And, even though she shows little interest in him, Andy Bernard asks her to marry him in the Season Finale. However, the end of the episode reveals that bride-to-be is having secret intimacy with Dwight Schrute. She continues to have a secret affair with her former lover into the fifth season; until he is told of the illicit activity by Steve Carell's Michael Scott; who happens to be the only one in the workplace who has the nerve to tell him. He later confronts Angela and Dwight; leading to him to call off the wedding. This eventually leads to another change in attitude for Ed Helms' character; seeing that in the following episodes he starts to display signs of losing confidence in himself and his abilities. This is major turning point for the character, seeing as the whole experience as made him a more sympathetic character

Throughout the rest of the fifth season and into the sixth and seventh , Ed Helms' character is completely different than when we first me him in 2006. Following his break-up with Angela Kinsey's Angela Martin, Andy continues to seek the friendship of others; more persistantly than in Seasons Four and Five. While many of his fellow co-workers did not treat him with much respect in the past years, Ed Helms' character is frequently seen hanging out with his co-workers and engaging in workplace activities. In addition, in Season Seven, it's shown that the hapless employee has developed a rappot with Craig Robinson's Daryll Philbin. This is evident as they are seen confiding in each other on different occassions; as well as forming a band with Brian Baumgartner's Kevin Malone at the end of the Season Seven episode "The Sting." What's more, John Krasinki's Jim Halpert talks with Andy on a few occassions; thus treating him as an equal. These scenes are nice to see; considering that Ed Helms' character was at first an obnoxious and braggadocios individual. But, as time progressed, he matured; thus becoming more reserved and modest.

And Ed Helms' Andy Bernard was further able to develop as a character; thanks in large part to his relationship with Ellie Kemper's Erin Hannon; the new recptionist of Dunder Mifflin Paper Scranton who's hired towards the end of Season Five. As Season Six unfolds, Erin Hannon eventually becomes Andy Bernard's official love interest. Unfortunately, even though he has strong feelings for her, Ed Helms' character is very nervous about approaching her. We observe him desperately try to approach her; but he frequently shows signs of nervousnessness. He wants everything to be perfect, seeing as he wants to win her love, but things often go wrong. Fortunately, it is revealed that Ellie Kemper's character has feelings for Andy Bernard; and we are able to be happy for Ed Helms' protagonist; thus seeing that he has finally formed a romantic relationship. In addition, both Ed Helms and Ellie Kemper have great chemistry; thus making the affections their characters have for each other appearvery believable.

Unfortunately, their union doesn't last long; and at the start of Season Seven, it is revealed that she is dating Zach Woods' Gabe Lewis, the liason between the corporate office and the Dunder Mifflin Paper's Scranton, during the Summer of 2010. Throughout the season, Ed Helms' character tries to impress Ellie Kemper's Erin Hannon in attempts to win her feelings back. There are also several instances in which Andy Bernard displays many acts of consideration towards Ellie Kemper's Erin Hannon, such as lending her a movie in Season Eight's "The Seminar" and helping her solve a Valentine's Day scavenger hunt, which was actually designed by Zach Woods' Gabe Lewis in the Season Eight episode "PDA"; thus making her happy; and in the episode "Michael's Last Dundies," she publically breaks-up with Zach Woods' character. Unfortunately, while we assume that Ed Helms' character has finally had a lucky break, he is eventually confronted by Gabe Lewis; who tells him to stay away from Ellie Kemper's character. In addition, during the Season Eight Finale "Search Committee," in an overly-infuriated state of mind, tries to sabotage Andy Bernard's interview for the position of Regional Manager. Fortunately for Ed Helms' characters, the unprofessional actions of Zach Woods’ character cause him to be removed from the committee. Towards the end of the episode, Andy Bernard couragously stands up in front of everyone in workplace and states that he wants to be the new Regional Manager; utimately earning an honest look of approval from Erin . leading him to outline reasons why he believes so-- and to his and our surprise, there is some agreement. And, at the beginning of "The Office's" eighth season, it is revealed that James Spader's Robert California ( who is now the CEO of the entire company after persuading former CEO Jo Bennett, portrayed by Kathy Bates during Seasons Six and Seven, to give up her job) has appointed Ed Helms' Andy Bernard to be the new Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper's Scranton Branch; leading me to be very happy.

When looking back on the background of Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard, it could be difficult to see why, in all honesty, I am glad to see him become the Regional Manager of the Scranton Branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper. Well, even though he performed some more-than-questionable actions, such as getting Raiin Wilson's Dwight Schrute temporarily fired as well as punching a hole in the workplace's wall in a moment of intense rage, I believe the character has evolved in a great manner. Keep in mind, these actions were performed in the third season. Ed Helms' Andy Bernardhas gone from being completely over-competitive to being more reserved and responsible; thus establishing him to be an amiable protagonist. The emotional journey the character has traveled throughout his tenure on the show has enabled us to root for him. This is a guy who's soon-to-be-bride barely shown affection for; even going as far as to cheat on him with her former lover. In adition, Raiin Wilson's Dwight Schrute has given him a difficult time as well; seeing as he has expressed discontent towards Andy Bernard on various occassions. Furthermore, Zach Woods' Gabe Lewis ultimately proved to be a true rival for the affection of Ellie Kempler’s character. In other words, Ed Helms' character has faced antagonism throughout the past seasons; thus leading him to display signs of immense-trepidation aand lack of faith in himself. Henceforth, seeing him earn the title of Regional Manager is wonderful; seeing as he has truly emerged victorious.

And what’s also truly great is that, while Ed Helms' Andy Bernard has frequently shown signs of self-doubt and self-conciousnes, there are times when he is able to brush his fears aside, stand tall, and take significant action; which, in turn, leads to approval from his co-workers. leading to . As mentioned before, towards the end of last season’s finale, Ed Helms' character puts aside his fears and officially declares his desire to be Regional Manager; surpringly leading to statements of agreement. In addition, throughout the Season Eight Premier episode "The List," Ed Helms' character is greatly intimidated by James Spader's Robert California. However, towards the end of the episode, Andy approaches his supervisor and strongly defends the employees James Spader's character finds unsatisfactory ( as evident by the fact that he considers some employees to be "winners" and the rest to be "losers.) The stand that Helms' character takes towards his supervisor is very grand; and the result is that he earns the respect of his fo-workers-turned-employees. Lastly, in this week's episode "The Incentive", Helms' character motivates his works to increase productivity by saying that if they reach a specific level of points, he would get a permanent tattoo imprinted on his backside. Andy is successful in motivating his employees; even though he is fearful of going through the painful process. Shortly after arriving at the tattoo parlor, he confides to John Krasinki's Jim Halpert that he is very worried that he doesn't know what's doing as manager. Krasinski's character tells him that he succeeded in inspiring everybody in the workplace; thus leading them to work harder. Ultimately, Ed Helms' protagonist gets the tattoo; and is happy to see that the finalized imprint symbolizes the favor they hold for their new boss. Thus, Ed Helms' protagonist was successfully able to encourage his workers; and, in turn, he has their support. Thus, we can be very happy for Andy Bernard; seeing as he realy is a true leader!

And, just as we can be joyful for the character of Andy Bernard, we can be very happy for Ed Helms as an actor. Throughout his stay on “The Office,” Helms has managed to completely portray his character in a flawless manner. We have seen the actor first depict Andy Bernard as a strongly-competitive employee. And, as the seasons progressed, the actor has enabled his protagonist to become a truly affable and well-meaning Regional Manager who has the support of his workers. But, no matter the state of mind his character is in, Ed Helms manages to give a completely believable performance. In 2006, he enabled us to dislike the character due to his obnoxious behavior. And, as his tenure unfolded, he enabled us to feel for him as he frequently displalyed raw human emotion. In other words, Ed Helms has established a grounded performance as his character; thus leading us to actually root for him. While we weren't when we first met, I am happy to say that, just as his characters' peers have, Ed helms as won our respect!

Thus, I am more-than-satisfied to see Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard as the new Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton. And, who knows what pleasant surprises are in store for us. For one thing, there are sure to be new dynamics formed between him and his co-workers-turned-employees. For instance, I can’t wait to see what form of association is developed between Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard and Paul Lieberstein’s Toby Flenderson; the miserable Human resources representative that works in the annex at the workplace. That possible storyline would be great to see; as well as the probable plotlines involving other employees; such as Kate Flannery’s Meredith Palmer and B.J. Novak’s Ryan Howard. With Ed Helms' Andy Bernard as the new Captain of the Scranton Branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper, I'm sure he'll steer us in the direction of plenty of laughter, good stories, and lots of memories. And I'm sure that Steve Carell's Michael Scott would wholeheartedly agree!

Despite a few setbacks, this was a fine season premier

The Opening debate sketch, the monolgoue, and the first two sketches were very funny. But, most of the rest of the show wasn't that great-- in all honesty.

Alec Bladwin was a good host as expected and his performance made the show worthwhile. His Tony Bennett impression was great as always; and his chemistry with the cast as well as with Steve Martin was perfect.

The cast did a good job tonight as well. Most of the political impressions in the opening debate sketch were good; and the monologue, while a tad silly & tasteless towards the end, was very funny. Seth Rogen was unexpected and seeing the three performers together on stage was a treat.

The "All My Children" sketch, Kristen Wiig's reporter character, Alec Baldwin's Tony Bennett impression and the "Top Gun" auditions commercial were the best parts of the show. The other sketches featured were either silly and repetitive-- such as the final sketch with the army soldiers-- or just plain stupid-- the "Who's on Top" game show sketch. What's more, many of Seth Meyers' jokes on Weekend update weren't funny; and the whole segment was saved by Alec's impression of Tony Bennett. What's more, Nasim Pedrad's sketch towards the end of the show could have been much better. But the performances of her and Baldwin were pretty good.

All in all, tonight wasn't a bad show. It was actually a fine way of kicking off season 37 of SNL. I am really looking forward to seeing Melissa McCarthy host next week; seeing as she was absolutely hilarious in "Bridesmaids." I hope that SNL has more great hosts on deck for the season.

Thank you so much for tuning in to my live coverage. I had a great time blogging and I hope you had fun reading my comments. Thank you so much and have a great night!

The show is pretty much over

Started off funny and then teetered off

Now it's getting a little silly and repetitive

Alec Baldwin is making this sketch passable

The cast is making this sketch pretty Funny! This is actually pretty funny! With the exception of that Cancer joke.

Next sketch

Wow! This is an original sketch! But pretty decent

I can't believe the show is almost over

Time flies by quickly!

That was a short song!

Only ten minutes left in the broadcast

I guess they'll have time for one more sketch

I'm surprised there hasn't been a digital short so far tonight

They most likely would have done one by now.

Radiohead is performing again!

This show started off strong

But with the exception of the "Top Gun" commercial, the second half has been very disappointing

Radiohead is up next!

I really wish they would spoof Baldwin's "Capital One" ads

That could have been very funny!

Some of the sketches tonight have ended quite suddenly!

This isn't that funny! But Baldwin is good as always

That was an abrupt ending!

Alright! That's pretty unexpected!

This sketch isn't as funny as it could be!

Nasim Pedrad is good at playing kids

Next sketch is almost up

Alec Baldwin is one of the best hosts SNL has ever had!!!

I hope he hosts many more times!!!

These are great!!!

I always like commercial spoofs like this

The cast is able to demonstrate their great impersonation skills

That was just too silly!

I can't believe this!

Other than the cast being funny

This idea for a game show is just plain stupid!

This is easily my least favorite sketch of the show so far!

This is a distrubing premise for a game show!

Game Show sketch!!!

I really hope someone from "Up All Night" hosts SNL this year

The show has a very good cast!

I strongly predict that Neil Patrick Harris will be hosting in November

to promote the new "Harold and Kumar" film

Commercials are up now

That's It??????

That was one of the shortest Weekend Updates I ever seen!!!

Some of his jokes aren't funny

Seth Meyers is finny but he's not my favorite Weekend Update anchor

This is a good bit!

Alec Baldwin is a great host as always!

"Contagion" reference

Baldwin always does a great impression of Tony Bennett

CALED ALEC BALDWIN'S TONY BENNETT IMPRESSION!!!!!

That was amusing

Ok Facebook joke

not the best

I really wish they would have changed the Update desk and backdrop a bit

It would have been nice to see a slight change for the new season!

Back with Weekend Update

I think that Ed Helms' character is a good replacement for Steve Carell's Michael Scott

We are now viewing more commercials

I really wish they would have changed the commercial bumpers and opening montage

I really like the show so far!

But, in all honesty, I am not a big fan of Radiohead

They aren't my favorite band

It's not a bad song.

They are playing their new song "Lotus Flower"

I listened to the song today

We are back with Radiohead!

30 Rock is now on Comedy Central

This is a pretty good show so far tonight!

Kristen Wiig is having a great night!

Wow!

Kristen Wiig is doing great with this sketch!

That's a great visual gag!

That's great!

Kristen Wiig again!

A news show sketch

We are back!

I never saw this type of commercial before

What is this commercial spoofing?

This is unbelievable!

Wow! Just Wow!

I'm really happy all the featured players are back

Nasim Pedrad has finally been rpomoted to the regular cast

Wish they would have a new one

Same opening as the past two seasons!

Bill Hader is great!

Baldwin is great as always!

I'm glad to see Baldwin in the opening

I'm not sure who's impersonating Ron Paul

I think it might actually be featured player Paul Brittain

I don't think that Kenan is that funny as Herman Cain

Kristen Wiig's impressions are one of her best assets as a cast member

Kristen Wig is great as Michelle Bachman!

Good joke about "Whitney"

Bobby Moynihaan as Newt Gingrich!

Pretty funny!

Good to see him get more exposure with a political impression

Taran Killiam as John Huntsman

That's actually pretty funny!

Good Joke by Sudeikis

Baldwin is doing a good job with the impression!

Countdown to the Thirty-Seventh Season of Saturday Night Live: Part 2- Predictions for the Premier

With the Premier of the 2011-2012 Season of Saturday Night Live airing tonight at 11:30pm on NBC, I thought it could be interesting to predict what special occurrances could take place. Seeing that Alec Baldwin is hosting, I really hope the cast and crew start things off with a bang. Of course, seeing as the past season did not turn out as great as I sincerely hoped, there is extreme caution brewing within my heart. Nevertheless, I would now like to present to you:

My 4 Predictions for When Alec Baldwin Hosts the Premier of Saturday Night Live's Thirty-Seventh Season

1. Tonight marks Alec Baldwin's sixteenth time hosting Saturday Night Live. This means that he is officially breaking Steve Martin's record. The later has emceed the show fifteen times; and his last hosting stint took place February of 2009. Therefore, I would not be surprised to see him make a special appearance of some kind. Perhaps he'll appear during the monoglue to congratulate Baldwin; or maybe the pair might engage in a comically over-the-top confrontation; thus delighting the audience. I would enjoy seeking a routine such as this; seeing as they have participated in sketches that made it appear that there is a rivalry between the two entertainers. These pieces were hilarious; considering that the two veteran hosts had great chemistry and the mock-jealousy they exhibited was more-than-great. Hopefully, we are not disappointed.

Image taken from http://www.google.com/imgres?q=%22Alec+Baldwin%22+%2B+%22Steve+Martin%22+AND+SNL&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbm=isch&tbnid=D1x-4Kp8KLvyeM:&imgrefurl=http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2009/11/alec-baldwin-and-steve-martin.php&docid=UWMHZc0PNhasHM&w=450&h=304&ei=uEl-TozwBuHx0gGj6KjmDw&zoom=1&biw=1280&bih=596&iact=rc&dur=609&page=11&tbnh=113&tbnw=150&start=224&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:15,s:224&tx=98&ty=58

2. Since Alec Baldwin stars in the hit NBC sitcom "30 Rock," I would not be surprised if Tina Fey, the star and creator of the program, would show up as well. I could see her make a special appearance on Weekend Update; or even in a single comedy sketch. Also, since this is the season premier and the presidential election is next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Fey reprise her well-known impression of Former Alaska Governor and Republican Party Vice President Nominee Sarah Palin. In all honesty, however, her portrayal of the Former Governor has been way overexposed, and it might be to soon to see it once more; considering that Tina Fey revived the impression when she hosted Saturday Night Live this past May. Nevertheless, I really do expect that Tina Fey will be making some appearance tonight.

3. Since Alec Baldwin is a multiple-time host, I wouldn't be surprised to see, in addition to Steve Martin, cameo appearances by other stars who have hosted the show more than five times. I could see maybe Tom Hanks dropping by the show; seeing as he's hosted Saturday Night Live on eight occassions. I could also see John Goodman making a special appearance as well; seeing as he's emceed the long-running comedy show eleven hilarious times. In all honesty, it would be great to see all these multiple-time hosts together on screen during the monolgue or a segment of some kind. Imagine the audience's reaction! Their joy would definitely equal mine!

4. Finally, I could see Alec Baldwin reprising his Tony Bennett impression for a new installment of his reoccurring sketch "The Tony Bennett Show." Seeing as the famous musician has recently released a new album, it would be great to see Baldwin's impression back again. It should also be mentioned that the REAL Tony Bennett appeared in an installment of the sketch when Baldwin hosted in November 2006. In the sketch, the iconic musician was portraying a strugglingTony Bennett impersonator; while Baldwin was obviously meant to be posing as the real Tony Bennett. The whole sketch was hilarious and smart; and Tony Bennett was a good sport and was clearly enjoying the whole sement. Hencefoth, I would not be surprised to see the sketch take place once more.

So, these are my predictions for when Alec Baldwin hosts tonight's Season Premier of Saturday Night Live. Will any of them come true? You'll just have watch the show and find out. And, don't miss my live-blogging coverage; which will start right when Saturday Night Live begins its broadcast: 11:30pm SHARP! Countdown to the Thirty-Seventh Season of Saturday Night Live: Part 1- My Hopes for the New Season

So what are you planning on doing tomorrow night? Going out dancing? Going out to the bar for a drink or two? Or, perhaps you are interested in going to see a movie? Well, let me make a suggestion for you. Why don’t you stay up for the much-anticipated season premier of Saturday Night Live; broadcasting live starting at 11:30pm on NBC. The long-running sketch-comedy program is now entering it thirty-seventh season with guest host Alec Baldwin; who is emceeing the program for an incredible SIXTEENTH time; thus breaking Steve Martin's record for hosting the show on fifteen occasions Along with musical guest Radiohead, it is sure to be quite an interesting night. But, most importantly, the comedy show is starting up again after a three month hiatus. Henceforth, as we enter another year and start fresh, let me present to you now:

My Three Hopes for the 2011-2012 Season of Saturday Night Live

#1- Less Reoccurring Sketches

This past year, we have seen an abundance of sketches and characters that have been repeated throughout the season. We have seen many characters and sketches that rely on the same joke and premise so much, it gets very tiresome. For instance, on three occasions we have seen the reoccurring sketch “What Up With That”; which features cast member Kenan Thompson portraying talk show host Diondre Cole—who is more interested in singing the show’s theme song rather than interviewing his guests. The joke takes place every time the sketch airs; making the piece’s special guest stars the only interesting component. In addition, my favorite cast member Bill Hader has thrice starred in sketches in which he plays an elderly news reporter named Herb Welch; whose old age prevents him from conducting a proper interview. The same formula is repeated every time; making the sketch an absolute waste of Hader’s great comedic abilities-- such as hilarious celebrity impressions and well-developed straight-men. The same could be said whenever Kristen Wiig portrays one of her reoccurring characters; such as over-excited prize-give-away news representative Cheryl Bryant; as well as the trouble-making Gilly. The same format is employed everytime her characters appear in the sketch; thus removing any shred of unpredictability. Henceforth, I really wish that Kristen Wiig would be able to portray characters that are in the same vein as her protagonist in “Bridesmaids.” That way, she will be able to treat us to preformances that are directly engaging and personable. Hopefully, this year, the writers can bring forward original characters that are capable of conveying intelligent jokes and plenty of laughs.

#2- More Use of the New Cast Members

This past season, we saw the arrival of four new performers: Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taren Killam, and Jay Pharaoh. And while the main cast members were more showcased throughout every episode, the new featured players proved to be the best addition to the cast in years. Vanessa Bayer delighted us with a hilarious portrayal of Miley Cyrus; as evident through the reoccurring segment Jay Pharaoh presented a great knack for celebrity impressions; such as Eddie Murphy and Will Smith. Taran Killam also proved to be a keen impressionist as well; and also proving to be a great physical comedian as well; as evident in two installments of a sketch in which he plays an animatronic robot at an amusement park attraction. And even though Paul Brittain was the least used out of the newest cast members, he proved to be quite funny as well; particularly when he portrayed the host of a sex symposium in a pre-taped commercial spoof. In short, this quartet of entertainers made the quality of the season better; so much so, that I was always looking forward to seeing them appear on screen. Hopefully, they are featured even more this year; thus ellowing the audience to further enjoy their performances.

#3 (or Prehaps the Most Important)- Better Use of Hosts

In the early years of Saturday Night Live, the episode’s designated host would frequently be given a vital role for a sketch; even going as far as to play a hilarious and well-thought-out character. Furthermore, the host would regularly be a primary source of a sketch’s comedy; thus allowing the audience to enjoy her or him engaging in escapades with the great cast. Unfortunately, now is not the case. Now, the hosts do not get to exhibit their great acting abilities; as most of the roles they are now given tend to be in the supporting field. For instance, talented first-time hosts Ed Helms and Emma Stone weren't given a lot of significant roles in hopes to make their shows unforgettable. The onlystand-out apprances Helms mader were in his monologue and a sketch in which he played a charicature of a Republican candidate running for president. And the only memorable roles Emma Stone had were a a dance sketch with featured player Taran Killam; as well as a digital short featuring the actress spoofing the music and fashion styles of Ke$ha. Thus, I really wish Emma Stone's and Ed Helms' first-time hosting stints were more special; seeing as they are both very talented performers.

In addition, stars who had previously hosted the show weren't given a lot of material as well. For instance, Paul Rudd, who last hosted in 2008, wasn't given any material that allowed him to display his great comedic timing. Among the routines he was given included playing an audience member in a talk show sketch as well as being a member of a family who kiss each other in an over-the-top and continuous manner. Furthermore, former cast member Dana Carvey, who last hosted in 2000, only got to shine during a reprisal of his famous sketch "Church Chat;" during which his classic character The Church Lady interviewed Snooki, played by cast member Bobby Moynihan as well as Justin Beiber-- who appeared as himself. In addition, fellow alum Mike Myers joined Carvey for a reprisal of "Wayne's World:" which featured the performers reviving their characters Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar respectively. These sketches, in addition to his monologue, which featured a cameo by former cast member Jon Lovitz, proved to be the best parts of the night; seeing as the rest of the show featured Dana Carvey primarily being subjected to supporting roles that weren't funny. This was a true crime; seeing as he was one of the best cast members Saturday Night Live has ever had; and it pains me to see his presence being limited. Other previous hosts such as Jon Hamm and Anne Hathaway weren't used to their capacity; seeing as the sketches they were given were poorly-written and not at all funny. This is truly saddening; considering that the host is meant to be the focus of the episode. And when he or she is given material that relegates them to bit roles; you have to wonder why they aren't being allowed to showcase their talents. It gets to the point where you just want to see them in movies and talk shows; since Saturday Night Live is basically wasting their talents

Henceforth, I truly hope that the writers give the show's hosts this season great material and plenty of screen time; thus resulting shows that are both funny and memorable. Otherwise, I'm uncertain as to how the season will go.

So, there you go. Hopefully, my aspirations will be met. And with any luck, the 37th Season of Saturday Night Live will be a great season filled with brilliant sketches and grand performances. And optimistically, the cast will do their best with the writers' material. And ultimately, all I want is to watch a good show and have fun.

And I want be in on all the action. Before showtime, I will be posting my predictions for the Season Premier. And then at 11:30pm, I will be blogging the episode as it broadcasts; commenting on the sketches and performances. And, as I blog the episode, feel free to comment on anything I post. Film Review: "Our Idiot Brother"

I have been disappointed by a few things this summer. “The Hangover: Part II” failed to live up to its legendary predecessor. Steve Carell let me down by presenting a tremendously unemotional act in “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” And, as much as Kristen Wiig's gave a great performance in "Bridesmaids", I really wish her fellow comediennes got more time to demonstrate their comedic talents. So, as much as I was looking forward to seeing Paul Rudd headline his latest film “Our Idiot Brother,” there was still some apprehension brewing inside me. Suppose the amiable actor disappoints with a phoned-in performance? Suppose the movie barely contain raw human emotion? What if some of the film's cast members do not have enough screen time? Happily, that proved to not be the case. When viewing the movie this past Wednesday night, it was delightful to see Paul Rudd depict a greatly-developed protagonist. What’s more, it was wonderful to see an ensemble of performers portray colorful characters who all served a specific purpose to the film. Thus, I can say with utmost sincerity:

“Our Idiot Brother” is A Truly Funny and Intelligent Comedy that Lets All of Its Characters Shine Brightly!

In Director Jesse Peretez’s endearing comedy, we meet Paul Rudd’s Ned; a carefree guy working at a local market stand. After being politely coaxed by a police officer into selling him drugs, he is immediately arrested. Eight months later, Ned is released on bail and returns to the farm where he used to live. Unfortunately, his girlfriend Janet, played by Kathryn Hahn without any pleasantness, refuses to let him stay. She also refuses to let him take his beloved dog, humorously named “Willie Nelson,” with him. Soon after, Janet’s new boyfriend Billy, played smoothly by T.J. Miller, drives Ned into a nearby town; and, Ned says farewell to “Willie Nelson.” Billy tells Ned that he’ll try to persuade Janet to let our hero to stay in the goat barn if he can provide the money needed for rent. Eventually, Ned is seen sitting down for a family dinner with his mother Ilene, played sweetly by Shirley Knight, and his three inattentive sisters: Miranda, an aspiring journalist portrayed smugly by Elizabeth Banks, uneasily-married Liz, portrayed with great apprehension by Emily Mortimer, and Natalie; a bisexual comedienne played prudently by Zooey Deschennel. All three sisters are not very comfortable around Ned; as they are very put off by his laid-back attitude and lifestyle. Nevertheless, Emily Mortimer’s Liz lets Ned stay with her and pays him to help her husband Dylan, haughtily played by Steve Coogan, with his documentary duties; as well as take care of her energetic son River; portrayed with great enthusiasm by Matthew Mindler. In addition, our protagonist also helps out Elizabeth Banks’ Miranda by driving her and her interview subject Lady Arabella; an author played by Janet Montgomery. Regrettably, Ned’s carefree way of life gets in the way of his sisters’ lives, and Miranda, in a desperate attempt to get rid of our protagonist, gives him the rest of the money needed to pay rent. Unfortunately, it turns out that T.J. Miller’s Billy never spoke to Kathryn Hahn’s Janet about letting Ned stay in the goat house; and the sisters are once again stuck with Ned. This annoys them further; seeings as our hero inadvertently disrupts their personal lives in significant ways throughout the film. And, as the events of “Our Idiot Brother” unfold in front of our very eyes, all the characters appear completely genuine; thanks in large part to all of the cast's top-notch acting-- thus making the movie one of the summer's most unforgettable releases!

Image taken from http://media.theiapolis.com/d8-iEVO-k9-lFU9/paul-rudd-as-ned-in-our-idiot-brother-2011.html

Most of what makes “Our idiot Brother” so remarkable, is Paul Rudd’s endearing performance as Ned; the film’s lighthearted protagonist. As Ned, Rudd delivers his lines with brisk eagerness; thus establishing an easygoing demeanor for his character. His comic timing is more-than-impeccable; seeing as he never misses a beat when responding to the quips thrown at him by his fellow castmembers’ characters. What’s more, the actor is adept at performing various forms of comedy; whether it is obvious, subtle, or verbal. Thus, throughout the film, the actor provides the most laughter for the audience; while a majority of the rest of the cast serves as the ones who grow frustrated with his protagonist. Needless to say; his relaxed attitude will make you smile, chuckle, and applaud.

But, while we laugh at the comical performance that Paul Rudd supplies to us as Ned, we can’t help but sympathize with his character at all times. Right at the start of the movie, we feel bad for Rudd’s protagonist as he is basically cajoled into giving the police officer drugs; leading to him getting arrested. Also, upon arriving home, instead of welcoming Ned back with open arms, Kathryn Hahn’s Janet is found to have T.J. Miller’s Billy as her new boyfriend; showing that she has zero consideration for her ex-boyfriend’s feelings. What’s more, she won’t even let Paul Rudd's protagonist take his beloved dog "Willie Nelson" with him as she sends him away; thus making the situation even worse. In addition, the manner in which the sisters treat their brother is also very questionable; as they are irked by his carefree antics. But, as the sisters become increasingly frustrated with his quirkiness, Paul Rudd's Ned retains his belief that people are naturally good and understanding. And throughout his scenes, Paul Rudd's earnest performance as Ned proves to be very emotional and real.

And this defines what’s great about Paul Rudd as an actor. His portrayal of Ned is, at all times, believable. Throughout the film, Rudd allows his character to possess immense fortitude; thus enabling the audience to share his emotions. We smile when his character is playing wholeheartedly with Matthew Mindler's River and “Willie Nelson.” We pity him when his sisters put their interests above Ned's ethics. And, in a brilliantly-executed scene, Rudd's protagonist abandons his easygoing attitude and releases an emotional outburst. The actor's ability to drop his character's cheerful state and explode into a fit of pure rage makes you shake in your seat; seeing as the emotional transition is flawless. The amount of heart and soul Paul Rudd puts into the role proves how capable he is of putting on a purely dynamic performance. He truly is a talented performer!

And the performances of Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, and Zooey Deschennel are also worth noting as well. As aspiring journalist Miranda, Banks ensures a completely arrogant demeanor; seeing as she would do anything she can to publish a news story. This includes trying to exploit a private conversation between Paul Rudd's Ned and Janet Montgomery’s Author Lady Arabella for a big news article. In addition, the sequences featuring Miranda interact with her friend and neighbor Jeremy, portrayed dryly-but-sociably by Adam Scott, are so exciting; seeing as the two performers possess great chemistry and their comic timing is perfect. Therefore, Banks guarantees a solid performance as Miranda; thus making her the most memorable out of the trio of actresses playing Ned’s discontented sisters.

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=%22Our+Idiot+Brother%22+%2B+%22Elizabeth+Banks%22&um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbnid=eI8-r6-7h5JvCM:&imgrefurl=http://www.beyondhollywood.com/paul-rudds-idiot-brother-gets-his-own-trailer/our-idiot-brother-movie-elizabeth-banks-paul-rudd/&docid=UfbZYC9d0ip04M&w=940&h=624&ei=1wFtTte_OcrLgQeS6tiEBg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=687&vpy=141&dur=1047&hovh=183&hovw=276&tx=168&ty=125&page=1&tbnh=141&tbnw=192&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:15,s:0&biw=1280&bih=596

In addition to Elizabeth Banks’ grand feat as Miranda, it is also important to mention Emily Mortimer’s presentation as Liz; the only sister who has a child. Throughout her portrayal, Mortimer establishes an ever-neurotic presence; as she struggles to maintain her marriage to Steve Coogan’s Dylan; who appears indifferent towards her feelings. It is more than clear that her husband makes mankes many rules in the household; seeing as he doesn’t want Matthew Mindler’s River going on YouTube or practicing karate with Paul Rudd's Ned. All of her scenes are well-performed; thus, establishing the actress as a great contribution to the film.

Lastly, it is also important to comment on Zooey Deschennel’s affable performance as Natalie; perchance the youngest of Ned’s sisters. Her chemistry with Paul Rudd is nice; as her character’s bond with our protagonist is slightly more positive than the ones shared with Elizabeth Banks’ Miranda and Emily Mortimer’s Liz. In addition, the interactions Deschennel’s Natalie has with her partner Cindy, portrayed pleasantly by Rashida Jones, are well-performed and very engaging. The actress does a fine job portraying her character; thus rounding out the the film's central cast.

While the performances of Rudd, Banks, Mortimer, and Deschennel are all memorable, it is also important to discuss the performances of the supporting cast as well. As the husband of Emily Mortimer’s Liz, Steve Coogan provides a mostly-authoritative demeanor as Dylan; who is very picky about his son’s interests. In addition, Adam Scott provides a great amount of dry wit to his role as Jeremy; who would do anything for Elizabeth Banks’ Miranda at the drop of a hat; even though he denies romantic feelings for her. His interchanges with Paul Rudd are great; and a scene that features the two of them trading barbs is a great treat—seeing as they posses similar styles of verbal comedy. In addition, Rashida Jones offers a likable performance as Cindy, the partner of Zooey Deschennel's Natalie, and she proves to provide a very reserved and grounded presence in the film as well. Thus, the characters portrayed by Coogan, Scott, and Jones are all great; and they make the movie even more enjoyable and memorable.

Image taken from http://www.google.com/imgres?q=%22Our+Idiot+Brother%22+%2B+%22Adam+Scott%22&um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbnid=casLiaPMOwLj7M:&imgrefurl=http://social.entertainment.msn.com/movies/blogs/the-hitlist-blogpost.aspx%3Fpost%3D76f21cd8-028f-4139-a58f-c48a793c5c56&docid=MEUUA0p2ZuEJ0M&w=423&h=281&ei=agNtTpX5GMHYgAeK_OXyBQ&zoom=1&biw=1280&bih=596&iact=rc&dur=141&page=1&tbnh=131&tbnw=190&start=0&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0&tx=133&ty=72

Finally, Matthew Mindler provides a great presence as the son of Emily Mortimer’s Liz and Steve Coogan’s Dylan. Throughout the film, the young actor gives an energetic performance as he engages in fun activities with our protagonist. Both Rudd and Mindler possess great chemistry; and the scenes in which they engage in playful activity together are not only fun, but also heartwarming. Henceforth, Mindler’s involvement in the film further highlights the band of vivid characters that embody this hilarious-yet-sincere film.

And that makes “Our Idiot Brother” even more memorable. Not only does the film feature so many characters in a limited time frame; they are all well-developed and well-executed. We get to see so many traits and relationships shine; it is as if we are watching actual people live their lives right in front of us. Every character has a personality and and an important contribution to thestory. Even T.J. Miller’s Billy, the new boyfriend of Kathryn Hahn’s Janet, serves an important purpose. And for this, we can thank screenwriters Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall for managing this complicated task. Within ninety minutes, they are able to fit in many details and storylines; allowing the audience to enjoy the film honestly. What’s more, none of the characters are one- dimensional and they all are emotionally-developed perfectly. In other words, “Our idiot Brother” perfectly depicts one of the greatest collection of characters in an R-rated film!

All in all, "Our Idiot Brother" truly makes for a great end-of-summer release. And I salute Paul Rudd and the whole cast for their high-quality acting. Their participation as well as the screenplay truly is unforgettable. In other words, there really isn't one idiotic factor present in this comedy at all! And that is NO JOKE!

Film Review: "Bridesmaids"

R-rated comedies have mostly been a guys’ club. Throughout the years, we have seen films that feature either a band of male performers engage in comedic scenarios involving bathroom humor, sex jokes, and profanity-filled dialogue. And in many of these movies, female performers are primarily treated as the obligated love interest or simply eye candy. Needless to say, women in R-rated comedies are mainly used as a supporting component to an otherwise-male-dominated escapade. Henceforth, it was an absolute treat to watch and enjoy Director Paul Feig’s hilarious-but-earnest comedy “Bridesmaids;” which features Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig as the hero as well as a gifted ensemble of comedic female performers. Combined with a hysterical and poignant screenplay written by Wigg and Annie Mumolo, I was immensely happy to see such an innovative and beguiling comedy. Henceforth, I can positively decree that:

“Bridesmaids” Features a Grand Showcase of Kristen Wiig and a Talented Ensemble!

In Paul Feig’s endearing comedy, we meet Kristen Wiig’s Annie; a former-bakery-owner-turned-jewelry-store employee that is having an on-again-off-again relationship with her former boyfriend and co-worker Ted- played with fiendish charm by Jon Hamm. With her lovelife going nowhere, Annie finds out that her lifelong friend Lillian, played candidly by Maya Rudolph, is finally engaged. This makes Kristen Wiig’s protagonist very distraught; as she fears that she is losing her best friend to someone else. Fortunately, however, Lillian asks Annie to be her maid of honor; which makes the later very happy- but still worried. At the engagement party, our heroine meets her fellow bridesmaids; which include the unhappily-married Rita, played with great cynicism by Wendi McLendon-Covey, the blissfully newlywed Becca- portrayed by Ellie Kemper with grand perkiness, and the sharp-shooting Megan—played hysterically by Melissa McCarthy. Annie also meets the narcissistic Helen; Lillian’s newest friend—played by Rose Byrne with grand conceitedness. Helen’s relationship with Maya Rudolph’s Lillian makes our protagonist very jealous and worried; seeing as she now has a rival vying for her friend's compaionship. Following the party, Annie is pulled over by the kindly Police Officer Nathan Rhodes, played gingerly by Chris O’Dowd, who notices that her tail lights need repairing; and they start talking about her management of her bakery; which was entitled "Cake Baby." As they continue to meet throughout the film, they start to form a relationship; but Kristen Wiig's Annie continues to be trepidatious upon hearing his encouragement to start baking again. Also, as Annie tries to come up with ideas for Maya Rudolph's Lillian's pre-wedding festitivities, Rose Byrne’s Helen always manages to successfully come out on top and impress their fellow bridesmaids. And, as events unfold in front of our eyes, not only does Kristen Wigg give a great performance as her protagonist, but all the talented women who embody the film’s core ensemble make us laugh, make us feel, and most of all, make us cheer.

When watching Kristen Wiig’s engaging role as Annie, she ensures a comedic feat that is both hilarious and sincere. While I'm not entirely a fan of some of her characters on Saturday Night Live, due to the fact that the same jokes occur each time they appear, it is so wonderful to see the talented actress bring us a tremendously-original and deep performance as Annie. Also, throughout her performance in "Bridesmaids," Kristen Wiig demonstrates all kinds of comedy; including physical, verbal, and subtle. Moreover, her ability to speak in a comically fast-paced manner is brilliantly employed; mainly when her character is nervously intimidated by Rose Byrne's Helen. Therefore, her large comedic skills keep your eyes glued to the screen; thus allowing you to laugh strongly and honestly.

But, while she is capable of bringing significant humor to the film, Kristen Wiig is able to bring forward a significant amount of frankness to her role as well. Right when it is revealed that Maya Rudolph’s Lillian is engaged, you can see the extreme dread in Wiig’s eyes; seeing as her protagonist fears that she will be losing her lifelong friend and that she will be completely alone. Also, when Kristen Wiig’s Annie is in the presence of Rose Byrne’s Helen, it is more-than-easy to observe the immense panic brewing; as Wiig’s protagonist fears that she will interfere with her lifelong friendship with Maya Rudolph's Lillian . In addition, during Kristen Wiig’s sequences with Chris O’Dowd’s Officer Nathan Rhodes, you can clearly see that while our heroine is developing emotional feelings, she remains more-than-hesitant to start making cakes again despite his positive support. In fact, in every scene she is in, Kristen Wiig is able to hold her ground, thus making her protagonist completeky human on all levels. In other words, while she is able to be hilarious, Kristen Wiig is also capable of pulling off a completely truthful performance as well; thus certifying herself as a more-than-genuine actress!

However, while Kristen Wiig brings us a high-quality performance as Annie, the rest of the cast are truly memorable as their respective characters as well. For instance, Maya Rudolph confirms a fine performance as Lillian; Kristen Wig’s Annie’s long-term friend and the film’s designated straightwoman. As seen from their years on Saturday Night Live together, the two actresses posses great chemistry; seeing as their acting skills match perfectly—thus making their on-screen relationship completely real and inspired. As you watch “Bridesmaids,” you can tell that the two characters care for each other immensely; even though Rudolph’s character becomes increasingly irritated by the erratic behavior of Kristen Wiig’s Annie. However, because of their great chemistry and acting skills, you sincerely hope that everything turns out well for the two friends and that the film’s end is a happy one.

Although it is more-than-important to highlight the splendid performances of both lead actresses, Rose Byrne’s enthusiastic turn as the annoyingly-perfect Helen is also definitely worth highlighting. As the designated rival of Kristen Wiig’s protagonist, Byrne is able to allow us to completely cringe at her attempts to seize control of all the wedding preparations. Right when we meet Helen, Byrne is able to present an absolute sensation of over-aptness that defines her character. Byrne's feat as Helen allows us to like-but-be-annoyed by her constantly one-upping Kristen Wiig’s Annie. Thus, we are able to completely feel for our heroine—and continuously hope that she is able to emerge victorious and show Maya Rudolph’s Lillian just how much she appreciates her friendship. In addition, Byrne’s chemistry with Wiig is also great; and watching the pair go at it with each other is both enjoyable and emotionally-thrilling. In other words, Rose Byrne's casting is genius; and her acting is a devilish delight.

And Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, and Melissa McCarthy are also great throughout the film; seeing as they provide great laugh-filled moments as their designated characters. As fellow bridesmaids Rita and Becca, McLendon-Covey and Kemper posses great chemistry respectively; seeing as their on-screen personas carry differing stances towards the concept of marriage. In addition, Melissa McCarthy achieves a truly unforgettable and hilarious feat as the energetic Megan; whose in-your-face attitude helps her steal the spotlight in many of her scenes. McCarthy ensures a hilarious-but-honest act as her designated character; thus winning the mirth and applause from the audience. Needless to say, Melissa McCarthy brings us the most memorable supporting character of the film.

It should also be mentioned that the performances by Chris O’Dowd and Jon Hamm as the love interests of Kristen Wiig’s Annie are also very enjoyable. As Wiig’s passing fling Ted, Hamm beings us a hilariously self-centered manner; considering that his character is not at all interested in Annie's feelings as all. Furthermore, O’Dowd brings forward a charming approach as Police Officer Nathan Rhodes; who aspires to help Annie get out of her funk and make her life better. Wiig’s chemistry with both actors is top-notch; and all their scenes together are well-performed. In fact, it is more-than-safe to say that the entire cast of “Bridesmaids” are proficient as their characters and they all possess great comedic timing.

Despite all the great aspects about the movie, there are, of course, a few setbacks. For one thing, even though Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo have written a truly winning screenplay, there are a couple scenes that do drag and certain jokes are a tad predictable. Also, I really wish that Maya Rudolph was allotted some more time to demonstrate her comedic talents. And, on that note, I also wish that Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, and Melissa McCarthy had a larger presence in the film as well. Fortunately, however, we are treated to some cleverly-written and brilliantly-performed sequences that showcased the ensemble working together in a more-than-hilarious manner. They all interact greatly together; and their comedic performances match-up perfectly. In other words, the scenes in which all six women are together on screen are the most memorable!

(Cast as clockwise: Melissa McCarthy as Megan, Ellie Kemper as Becca, Rose Byrne as Helen, Wendi McLendon-Covey as Rita, Maya Rudolph as Lillian, and Kristen Wiig as Annie)

All in all, “Bridesmaids” is definitely a comedy worth watching and remembering. I definitely salute Kristen Wiig for giving the world an R-rated comedy everybody could enjoy. After all, besides the power of romance, nothing brings people together more than the power of laughter!
