From the Mind of Nate: My Opinion on the Current Season of "The Office"

On April 28, 2011, television history was made. Steve Carell, the star of NBC’s hit sitcom “The Office,” performed the character known as Michael Scott, the series’ offbeat-but-personable Regional Manager of the Fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper in Scranton, Pensylvannia, for the last time. Carell’s character had been the face of the series; as every episode revolved around the boss and his efforts to bond with the employees that work for the company. Throughout his tenure on the show, the character always made audiences laugh; particularly due to Steve Carell’s committed performance. For almost seven seasons, Steve Carell’s Michael Scott won audiences over with his unorthodox manner of running Dunder Mifflin Paper; one that included creating personas in an attempt to liven-up workplace meetings as well as throwing many parties in an attempt to increase workplace morale. And when Carell’s on-screen persona finally boarded a plane headed to Colorado so he could be with his wife-to-be Holly Flax, played by Amy Ryan, America was left wondering who would be serving as the new Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper And during the summer of 2011, it was announced that James Spader, who appeared in the Season Seven Finale as Robert California, a mystifying businessman who possessed the ability to see through everyone, would be playing the character on a regular basis; as he would be serving as the new CEO of Dunder Mifflin Paper. And, on September 22, the series’ eighth season kicked off with an episode entitled “The List,” which revealed that Paper Salesman Andy Bernard, played by Ed Helms, who’s played the character since the series’ third season, was selected by Spader’s on-screen persona to serve as the Newly-Appointed Regional Manager. Unfortunately, as the months flew by, the overall value of the series decreased due to an abundance of overstated comedy and the writers tampering with the personalities of some of the series' characters. Thus, I can say with all honesty:

It’s Hardly Any Business and Play for “The Office’s” Eighth Season

When “The Office” first premiered in spring 2005, the show was completely different from what it is now. The atmosphere of Dunder Mifflin Paper was quieter; and the characters were more down-to-Earth. In addition, the show’s writing was more understated than it is now; as the show’s writers hardly devised exaggerated premises that take place now. And what’s more, the humor felt more natural and seldom appeared overstated or forced. In addition, the castmembers’ personalities were consistent; thus allowing viewers to follow the series easily and keep track of the plotlines. In other words, the writers of “The Office” established an ambiance that provided humor that wasn’t at all exaggerated.

However, what truly made “The Office” so memorable was Steve Carell’s constantly dependable performance as Regional Manager Michael Scott. Because of Carell’s great comedic skills, episodes of the long-running series featured comedy that flowed through the entire runtime in a natural manner. Carell's interplay with every castmember was great; as it was a delight seeing the actor’s on-screen persona experience an adventure every week. Practically all the series’ most memorable moments were a result of Carell’s protagonist. We were able to laugh as a result of the character’s unusual antics and we were able to feel sorry for him when observing his attempts to make his employees happy unfortunately fail. This was all due to Steve Carell’s unusual-but-endearing performance; and we never wanted to miss a minute of the show. In other words, Steve Carell’s performance as Michael Scott was perhaps one of the greatest sources of the show's comedy and legacy.

However, when Steve Carell left the series at the end of April 2011, the tone of the series greatly changes. With Carell gone, the writers knew that they still were required to make audiences laugh; as the show was still on the air and an eighth had been ordered. Unfortunately, with their star player gone, the writers have resorted to taking the easy way out and do whatever they can fill every episode’s designated airtime. For instance, while many episodes in the past featured two storylines; one that focused on Carell’s Michael Scott and one or two of his employees, as well as a side story that involved the remaining workers. An example of this can be seen in the Season Two episode "Office Olympics;" which featured the central storyline of Raiin Wilson's Sales Representative Dwight Schrute assisting Steve Carell's Michael Scott in reserving his new condominium as well as a subplot of the Dunder Mifflin staff competing in different games in an attempt to rid themselves of boredom. The concept of creativing two storylines is a great method employed by the writers because it allows viewers to center on two stories that were fully developed; thus enabling all the castmembers to get a fair amount of screentime to demonstrate their comedic talents.

Now, unhappily, the writers possess the habit of giving various sets of characters their own stories; thus causing them not to have enough screentime within a given episode. An example of this idea occurrs in this past Thursday’s episode “Pool Party” contained multiple plotlines that were designated for different characters. The episode’s two main narratives involved James Spader’s Robert California giving some of the Dunder Mifflin workers a tour of his mansion before his former wife takes it from him; while the other central plotline involved Receptionist Erin Hannon, played by Ellie Kemper, trying to get the attention of Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard—as she still has feelings after their break-up. Both these storylines were intriguing as well as filled good comedic moments. Unfortunately, while these plots were unfolding, other subplots emerged; such as B.J. Novak’s Office Temp Ryan Howard and Zach Woods’ Corporate Liason Gabe Lewis continually trying to impress Spader’s Robert California as well as Craig Robinson’s Warehouse Foreman Darryl Philbin being hesitant about swimming in front of a female warehouse worker he has feelings for; as he feels that his bodyfat would upset her While both these subplots were interesting; they appeared tacked on in an effort to fill time and they weren’t very funny at all. Storylines like this take away from the true plots of the episode; and that results in some castmembers not getting enough attention from viewers.

Another problem the current season of “The Office” is experiencing is the fact that the show’s writers tend to bestow humor to the viewers that appears to be more forced; rather than the unassuming brand we’re used to seeing in the show’s early years. For instance, in the episode “Lotto,” the warehouse staffers quit after winning the lottery; leaving Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard, Craig Robinson’s Darryl Philbin to hire new staff workers. While this storyline plays out, John Krasinski’s Jim Halpert and some of the other Dunder Mifflin workers create a method of sliding boxes of paper onto the delivery trucks so they wouldn’t have to do it themselves. This scenario resulted in a lot of slapstick involving damaged inventory and cheap physical humor. This subplot also involved Raiin Wilson’s Dwight Schrute not being able to operate the loading equipment; which seemed completely out-of-character for him—seeing as he lives on a farm and he’s been seen using equipment of a similar nature in the past. These set-ups weren’t funny at all it only pictured the show’s writers making a lazy attempt to provide honest comedy to the viewers.

Another action the writers took to make people laugh is, perhaps the worst, to have the castmembers’ characters completely act much differently than what we are accustomed to seeing. By performing this act, the writers are presenting humor that is borderline ridiculous in an attempt to get laughs out of the audience. For instance, Leslie David Baker’s sales representative Stanley Hudson has always been depicted throughout the first seven years of the series as being dissatisfied with his lot in life as well as being irritated by the behavior of Steve Carell’s Michael Scott and some of his fellow co-workers. Now, David Baker’s on-screen persona has been acting uncharacteristically; as he was seen mocking his fellow co-workers in the season premier as well as assisting Raiin Wilson’s Sales Representative Dwight Schrute in pranking John Krasinski’s Sales representative Jim Halpert during the opening of this past Thursday’s episode “Pool Party.” These acts are completely out of the ordinary for Leslie David Baker’s Stanley Hudson; as he would be seen taking an indifferent stance towards pulling off pranks during the series’ earlier seasons. In addition, Brian Baumgartner’s Accountant Kevin Malone was always shown as being simple-minded and childish at times; as he was previously laughing at jokes about sex in episodes like Season Two's "Sexual Harrassment." Now, it appears that Baumgartner’s character has become completely immature; as he makes fun of the employees that James Spader’s Robert California finds inadequate during the season premier episode “The List.” It's saddening to see these characters become cheap versions of themselves; as it causes viewers to not entirely enjpoy the performances of the actors.

In addition, it could even be said that Sales Representative Dwight Schrute, played by Raiin Wilson, has devolved as well; as when the series first started, the character tended to be a follower of the workplace code that happened to be slightly naive-- as we've seen him been easily fooled by the simplest of pranks executed by John Krasinski's Jim Halpert. Now, the character has transformed into an individual that's prone to becoming very irate; as seen in some episodes of this season like "The Incentive" and "Doomsday." While Raiin Wilson does give a good performance; it’s disappointing to see that the show’s writers have chosen to mess with one of the series’ best known characters. All these changes are very saddening; as the writers are tampering with some of the characters; thus causing them to be harder to sympathize and root for; as they are losing their humanity. And that is not good for any television series.

However, I have to say that some changes to the characters have been very acceptable. Throughout the current season, Ed Helms has done a fine job portraying Andy Bernard; who has assumed the role that Steve Carell’s protagonist has served throughout his tenure at Dunder Mifflin. And it is important to remember that when Ed Helms joined the show during its third season, his on-screen persona was completely different; seeing as he was more competitive and easily angered. Now, as the company’s newly-appointed Regional Manager, Helms’ Andy Bernard is more reserved and responsible; as he wants the company to succeed and his employees kept in line. What’s more, Ed Helms works quite well opposite James Spader; whose solid portrayal of Robert California has provided the series with some energy. Seeing Helms’ Andy Bernard interact with James Spader’s character has been intriguing; as the latter has a very authoritative presence over the company’s new Regional Manager. And because of this, viewers are able to root for Ed Helms' protagonist; as his underdog status evokes empathy. Scenes involving Ed Helms' character interacting with James Spader's Robert California unfold in an unpredictable manner; and for that, we can actually thank the writers and both actors for their genuine performances.

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=James+Spader+Robert+California+%2B+Ed+Helms+Andy+Bernard&hl=en&rlz=1R2PRFB_enUS460&biw=1221&bih=570&tbm=isch&tbnid=RfIGCYnxTRWGHM:&imgrefurl=http://www.washingtonpost.com/the-office/2011/12/02/gIQAsOAtfO_photo.html&docid=TUOk6VC8GqGitM&imgurl=http://www.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_982w/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2011/12/02/Style/Images/NUP_145893_0138.JPG&w=982&h=655&ei=tLsdT6fbBcrDgAfRndCDDA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=78&vpy=179&dur=3969&hovh=183&hovw=275&tx=177&ty=108&sig=108994113646865217209&page=1&tbnh=116&tbnw=155&start=0&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0

So who knows? Maybe the future of “The Office” isn’t entirely bleak. After all, episodes of the series still provide some honest comedy to viewers; and the performances by the cast do keep the audience’s attention. But still, I am greatly disappointed by lazy attempts made by the writers to consume episodes with too many plotlines and cheap humor. They need to watch the old episodes of the series to remember the type of humor that made this show a must-see for viewers. And once the series has returned to its down-to-earth roots, it will officially be business as usual at Dunder Mifflin Paper in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

"Saturday Night Live" Episode Review: Daniel Radcliffe / Lana Del Ray

This past Saturday evening, NBC’s long-running sketch comedy program broadcast an all-new episode hosted by Daniel Radcliffe; who best known for starring as “Harry Potter” in the film franchise of the same name. Throughout the episode, Radcliffe performed well; as he provided good acting, a good amount of humor, and plenty of enthusiasm during each sketch. In addition, a majority of the cast did very well; as their performances were quite good—thus making most of the evening’s sketches fun. However, as we have seen throughout the season and the past couple years the show’s writers once again supplied the program with lazily-scribed segments that contained very little substance or originality. Despite this, because of the performances turned in by Radcliffe as well as most of the show’s cast, the show wasn’t a complete failure. Thus, I can say with sincerity:

The Performances of Daniel Radcliffe and the “Saturday Night Live” Cast Made This Past Weekend’s Episode worth Watching

The episode’s cold open featured Castmember Jason Sudeikis playing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney delivering a message at a diner in South Carolina. Sudeikis’ portrayal of Romney is always good; and I liked the idea how he went on to say that his life and family are very normal. While Sudeikis’ overly-modest representation of Romney is always funny, I’m getting tired of the show opening with a political figure talking to the camera when addressing the nation. We had a similar opening last weekend when Andy Samberg played Rick Santorum; who was addressing the nation about his campaign. In other words, while it was funny and Sudeikis performed well, this open wasn’t anything special.

For his monologue, Daniel Radcliffe explained that every in the audience best knows him for playing “Harry Potter” in the film series based on the well-known book series. Because of this, however, Radcliffe explained to the audience that, as they’ve done it plenty of times in the past, he didn’t want to partake in a parody of “Harry Potter.” He then mentioned some cheap spoofs “Saturday Night Live” could pull off; such as “Harry Potthead and The Jersey Shore.” This was followed by Featured Player Paul Brittain dressing up as the aforementioned character and castmember Bobby Moynihan came out as “Jersey Shore” personality Snooki and fellow castmember Bill Hader came out dressed as fellow “Jersey Shore” personality The Situation. While it was funny to see Hader and Moynihan portray their reoccurring impressions once again; it was the same thing as always. The monologue concluded with Radcliffe admitting that there possibly will be a “Harry Potter” sketch; seeing as the show will most likely do it anyway. Radcliffe’s enthusiasm made the monologue better than it could have been; and I was ready to watch the rest of the show.

The monologue was followed by an advertisement-spoof that stated that Ricky Gervais, played hilariously by Jason Sudeikis, was all ready to host the Golden Globes after his controversial performance from the year before. The ad went on by saying that Gervais would continue to push the envelope when emceeing other award shows; like the Kids’ Choice Awards and the Westminster Dog Show. Jason Sudeikis’ impression of Ricky Gervais was very hilarious; as he did a good job spoofing the British comedian’s mannerisms. The entire commercial parody was a clever idea; and its airing was very timely—seeing as the Golden Globes would air the following night.

The first official sketch of the night was the return of Kristen Wiig’s Target clerk; who would always befuddle customers due to her erratic behavior. Wiig once again gave a good performance as her character; though the writing of the sketch wasn’t very funny. Daniel Radcliffe played a new employee that has a crush on Wiig’s character; and throughout the sketch, he gave a decent performance—though he wasn’t given anything special to do.

The next sketch to air took the form of a talk show entitled “You Can Do Anything.” Bill Hader and Featured Player Vanessa Bayer played the hosts of the program; who would welcome people that appeared in videos broadcast on Youtube. Among the guests was a singer, played by Jason Sudeikis, who enthusiastically performed a hastily-put-together song; as well as a dancer, played by Daniel Radcliffe, who performed a mini-recital while painting some lines on an easel. The performances by everyone were very good; but, unfortunately, the writing dragged at points. Hader and Bayer were good as the hosts and I liked their over-enthusiastic repeating of saying the show’s title. Seeing them repeat the phrase “You Can Do Anything!” was humorous and the over-eager expressions on their faces were quite funny. Unfortunately, the joke got a tad old by the end. All in all, it was just another example of how the performances of the cast and host could improve the overall quality of the sketch.

A filmed piece followed; but, unfortunately, it wasn’t very funny. The pre-recorded segment depicted a boy at a party desperately trying to spin a bottle in hopes that it would get him to kiss a girl; played by Castmember Abby Elliot. However, the bottle always kept landing in the direction of hobos; played by Castmembers Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan, and Kenan Thompson. This resulted in Radcliffe having to kiss them on the face. This short completely represented one of my biggest problems with “Saturday Night Live;” which is using the concept of male-on-male kissing as crutch for getting laughs. The concept has been used many times in the past few seasons; and now it’s just insulting to the viewer. I DESPERATELY wish that “Saturday Night Live” would stop employing this concept to get the audience to laugh; but, unfortunately it looks like the joke will keep getting repeated. Not even the twist ending with Featured Player Jay Pharaoh could save this short.

The proceeding bit was another pre-filmed segment that was meant to be an advertisement for the new Broadway show “Delaware Fellas.” The musical was meant to be a tribute to “Jersey Boys;” considering that it featured a quartet of performers-- played by Kenan Thompson, Daniel Radcliffe, Kristen Wiig, and Taran Killam- singing songs parodying the musical numbers of the Tony Award-Winning show. The performances were all good; and I liked seeing the performers speak in mock-Italian. However, the segment went on a bit too long. The appearance of Jason Sudeikis’ impression of Vice President Joe Biden was funny; but, ultimately, he felt out of place in the segment. All in all, the bit was funny; unfortunately, it could have been shortened.

After the commercial break, we got to view the expected “Harry Potter”-parody of the night. In the year 2020, Harry Potter is still hanging around his old school in a desperate attempt to still live out his glory days of being a student. It was great seeing Daniel Radcliffe poke fun at the character that made him a star; and he was funny throughout the sketch—particularly whenever his boy wizard would brag excessively about his accomplishments; such as killing Lord Voldemort. The idea of Harry still living in the past while everyone else had moved on with their lives was funny and all the performances were good; especially Bill Hader’s; who performed a dead-on impression of Alan Rickman’s Professor Snape. The sketch was fun to watch; as it was written and performed well.

The evening’s installment of “Weekend Update,” unfortunately, was very weak. All of Seth Meyers’ jokes were either very corny or not funny at all. Though his delivery was somewhat funny, Meyers just seems to be getting stuck telling jokes that just don’t measure up to past Weekend Update Anchors.’ Fred Armisen and Vanessa Bayer portrayed Kim Jong Un’s Two Best Friends; who would openly praise the dictator; only to quietly complain about everything he does. The segment wasn’t funny at all; and both Armisen and Bayer were basic playing the same characters who originally Best Friends with Gadaffi. But, now that Gadaffi is dead, they as well as the writers just recycled the characters in an attempt to keep the gag relevant. Unfortunately, the routine wasn't funny and the whole was just another insult to the viewers and long-time fans of “Saturday Night Live.” Later on, Daniel Radcliffe appeared dressed, as what was meant to be, Casey Anthony’s Dog. Radcliffe’s character was talking about living with Casey Anthony; and he gave a good performance. Though I have to say that the subject matter was very delicate; and the writing wasn’t very memorable. Nevertheless, Radcliffe and Meyers interacted well together and it is always nice to see the show’s host appear on “Weekend Update.” Unfortunately, Radcliffe’s good performance couldn’t save this week’s installment; as it felt like one of the weakest to air this season.

Following “Weekend Update,” a creative sketch was set in the future was presented; in which an audience viewed a play depicting life in 2012. A group of performers- played by Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen, Daniel Radcliffe and Nasim Pedrad—played a family living in our time. They made references to the fact that life in 2012 was much more complicated than life in the future. The performers’ play contained references to life and pop culture in the 2000s; such as the Internet and music trends. The audience in the playhouse was dressed in futuristic attire while the performers playing the members of the family were dressed in present-day attire. While the performances were all good, I didn’t find the sketch to be very funny and a joke aimed at Taylor Swift wasn’t at all humorous. All in all, it was an intriguing sketch; but, unfortunately, it wasn’t very hilarious.

Next, another talk-show sketch was presented in the form of “The Jay Pharaoh Show;” in which Featured Player Jay Pharaoh awkwardly interviewed Daniel Radcliffe about his career. The entire sketch felt reminiscent of “The Chris Farley Show” from the early 90’s; in which Farley would interview celebrities like Jeff Daniels and Paul McCartney by timidly asking them overly-simple questions. All through this segment, Pharaoh basically tried to make small-talk with Radcliffe; only his attempts to do so made him look awkward and impractical. The only parts of the segment that I found funny were when Pharaoh performed some dead-on impressions of celebrities like Will Smith and Tracy Morgan in a desperate attempt to fill time. Radcliffe handled himself very well throughout the sketch; though unfortunately, the segment didn’t really go anywhere.

The final sketch of the night was a very nice and straightforward sketch. Kristen Wigg played an excited researcher that bombarded a constituent, played by Radcliffe, with increasingly-ridiculous questions after he voted in the New Hampshire Primary. The interplay between Radcliffe and Wiig was very engaging; and it was nice to see a political-yet-offbeat sketch close out the show. The questions Wiig’s character asked Radcliffe’s voter were hilarious, and his reactions were very good. I liked this segment; as it was simple and it relied on humor that wasn’t at all over-the top.

And that’s the show. Though the writing wasn’t entirely great, I have to say that Daniel Radcliffe gave a very good performance as the evening’s host. He did the best he could with the material he was given; and I would REALLY like to see him host again.
It should also be said that Lana Del Ray, who served as the evening’s musical guest, was DEFINITELY not good at her at all. The first song she performed, entitled “Video Games,” was COMPLETELY devoid of energy; while her voice sounded very dull and lacking a unique sound. Her second song, entitled “Blue Jeans,” was a tad better; but it wasn’t great. I have no idea who booked Lana Del Ray for the show; but whoever did made a huge mistake.

All in all, while this wasn’t a great show, it’s definitely not the season’s worst—that honor belongs to Katy Perry—who turned in a very awkward performance as the show’s host. I look forward to live-blogging the next live show; which will air on February 4 and will feature Channing Tatum as the show’s host. While I’m not entirely familiar with his work, other than seeing him in “The Dilemma.” Until then, I look forward to posting my next big writing.

That Was An exciting Award Show Filled with Unexpected Wins!!!

I had a great time live-blogging the show; and after tonight, I know what films I want to see-- hopefully before The Academy Awards!

Ricky Gervais was hilarious as expected. Though he wasn't on stage as long as I hoped. His jokes were all funny; but I feel like he was a tad restrained throughout the telecast.

I'm surprised by some of the winners. I'm REALLY surprised that "the Help" didn't win Best Actress in a Drama as well as Best Drama, Viola Davis won Best Actress at Thursday's Critics' Choice Awards; and it also won Best Ensemble as well. The only award it gained was Best Supporting Actress fir Octavia Spencer; who was very good in the film. I look forward to posting a writing about the movie sometime before The Academy Awards.

I'm VERY HAPPY, however, that Maryl Streep won the award for Best Actress in a Drama. She is an AMAZING actress; and she is very appreciative. Her speech was wonderful; and I loved all the wonderful things she said about her fellow nominees. She is an iconic performer and I REALLY want to see "The Iron Lady."

"The Artist" and "The Descendants" cleaned up very well tonight; and henceforth, I want to see both films; particularly "The Artist." I also want to see "Hugo;" considering that Martin Scorsese won the award for Best director. He is a Hollywood legend; and the movie looks VERY intriguing.

I'm a little disappointed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt didn't win the award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. His performance in "50/50" was FANTASTIC; and I wish that he would win an award in the future. He is a Very Good performer; and I look forward to seeing him in more movies.

All in all, this was an enjoyable event. I had a good time live-blogging the show for THREE hours. I loved that the night was filled with surprises. It was an enjoyable telecast and I look forward to live-blogging the Academy Awards on February 26,

And that concludes my live-blogging of The 69th Annual Golden Globes. Thank you all for following me tonight. It's been great as always; and I look forward to posting my next writing. Thanks again and Good Night Everybody!

A "That's Nater-Tainment!" Special Report: My Views On The 2012 Golden Globes' Comedy Film Categories

In a few hours, the 69th Annual Golden Globes will be airing on NBC. And, as I did last year, I plan on live-blogging throughout the telecast; which is from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. I will be commenting on who's winning, who's losing, as well as other matters that come to mind during the telecast. And, as I am a big lover of comedy, I have a few wishes as to how the comedy categories turn out. Thus, I thought it would be great to post some feelings regarding the three main categories in this particular field-- in an attempt to get you all in the mood for the event. Thus, without further ado, I now present to you:

My Wishes and Predictions About the 2012 Golden Globes' Comedy Categories

1. I really wish that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would win the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his emotional performance in "50/50." As protagonist Adam Lerner, who is diagnosed with a tumor on his spine and must experience different forms of treatment in an effort to get it removed, Gordon-Levitt held his own throughout the entire film; never once giving in to co-star Seth Rogen's constant crudeness. Joseph Gordon-Levitt bestowed a performance that was emotionally-riveting; one that allowed us to completely sympathize with him. Henceforth, I greatly yearn for him to win the award. However, it is most likely that Jean Dujardin, will win for his lead role in "The Artist;" seeing as he's gotten great praise from several critics for his performance.

2. I would love to see Kristen Wiig, who has dominated sketches on "Saturday Night Live" thanks to her vast comedic talents, win the Golden Globe for her grand performance in the humorous and sincere comedy "Bridesmaids." As protagonist Annie Walker; who is asked to be the Maid of Honor to her best friend Lillian (played by former "Saturday Night Live" castmember Maya Rudolph). And as a result, Wiig's protagonist endures several mishaps when putting together the event; but throughout it all, she fears that she'll forever lose her best friend once she becomes wed. Kristen Wiig treats the audience to a hilarious and genuine performance throughout the film; one that proves to be the best in her career so far. Kristen Wiig is a very talented actress and I wish she would win the award. However, I know in my heart that Michelle Williams, who portrays the late Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn," will claim the award; as she has gotten rave reviews for portraying the famous actress.

3. When dealing with the category of Best Comedy or Musical, I greatly wish that either "50/50" or "Bridesmaids" would emerge victorious. Aside from Seth Rogen's acting, I really liked "50/50;" mainly for the emotional performance turned in by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as well as the relationships his character shares with the people in his life; which include his mother, played strongly by Angelica Huston, and his therapist Katie; played gingerly by Anna Kendrick. In addition, the movie felt completely real and didn't once drag; thanks in large part to the script written by Will Reiser; who based the movie on his experience on his own treatment for Spinal Cancer. The movie contained plenty of comedy and drama; thus establishing it as a worthwhile film.

I would also be happy if "Bridesmaids" won the honor as well. The R-rated comedy features a great ensemble of comedic performers; which includes Melissa McCarthy-- who manages to steal every scene she's in thanks to her hilarious performance as the crude-but-lovable Megan. I also liked the friendship between Kristen Wiig's Annie Walker and Maya Rudolph's Lillian. The chemistry between the two actresses was great; and I loved seeing the two paired-up in a non-"Saturday Night Live" feature. What's more, I really liked seeing a group of hilarious actresses have fun in a movie. They were all equally funny and they all worked well together. Additionally Kristen Wiig and her writing partner Annie Mumolo supplied the movie with plenty of humor and heart; making it a very considerable film.

However, while I wish that either one of these films would win the Golden Globe for Best Comedy, I realize that "The Artist" will claim the honor; considering that it won Best Movie at this past Thursday's Critics' Choice Movie Awards. However, it should be said that "Bridesmaids" won the award for Best Comedy at the same ceremony. So I realize that anything is possible.

Finally, and this is away from the topic, I am greatly excited about Ricky Gervais hosting the ceremony once again. He was hilariously honest last year; and I look forward to hearing his jokes this year. I read a few days ago that he will be going after six or seven targets during the ceremony. One can only wonder who in particular he will go after. Needless to say, I'm sure that Ricky Gervais will be hilarious tonight.

So there you go. Those are my views predictions as to how the comedy film categories will turn out. Of course I will be posting my thoughts and opinions regarding who's winning in the drama films categories during the telecast. I am greatly excited about covering the whole show; commenting on who's winning and losing, who's presenting awards, and anything else that takes place.

So be in front of your computers beginning at 8:00pm and have NBC on your televisions. Please feel free to post your thoughts underneath any of my comments; as your feedback is very important. Keep refreshing your computer screens throughout the show so you can read my latest opinions. Trust me, you do NOT want to miss my live-coverage of The 69th Annual Golden Globes. So stay tuned and I'll see you at 8:00pm!

The show is almost over

I look forward to posting my review Tuesday night

ANOTHER pre-taped commercial spoof??

There sure has been A LOT of segments that weren't presented live. Okay ad spoof though

This sketch is dragging a bit now

Kristen Wiig's performance saved it

I like that they are ending the show with a simple straightforward sketch

I know they've done sketches like this before

I don't know when but the premise seems familiar

Good performance by Kristen Wiig so far

Radcliffe is doing good fine as the straightman of the sketch

We are back

This song is actually a little better than her first song

But it's still not a great performance at all.

Both her performances were dull and not at all special

Lana Del Ray isn't a great performer at all

In fact, she's downright boring.

They're showing Emma Stone's episode again next week

Despite the efforts of Emma Stone and the cast, that episode wasn't the best of the seaon.

another one of these commercial spoofs

Kristen Wiig is funny but it's getting a bit too much now

Next sketch is almost on

Aside from Jay Pharaoh's impressions

There wasn't anything really special about the sketch

Great Tracy Morgan impression!

That was a quck sketch. Good performance by Jay Pharaoh.

Jay Pharaoh's impressions are very good

This sketch kind of reminds me of The Chris Farley Show from the early 90's.

So Jay Pharaoh gets his own talk show sketch

Good to see him being used more

There's been A LOT of pre-taped segments tonight

I wonder why they've been doing this. That being said, Kristen Wiig is giving a good performance again

Next sketch is coming up

Kristen Wiig was good in that commercial spoof

That was an abrupt ending

It was a clever sketch. Could have used a better ending

Why dies this sketch have to include sex jokes?

They're always used as a way to get cheap laughs.

This is an interesting idea for a sketch

The performances are good. The material is okay as well

Next sketch is coming up

Very weak installment of "Weekend Update"

Not even Radcliffe's good performance was enough to save it.

The writing isn't good

But Daniel Radcliffe is making the best of the situation.

Daniel Radcliffe dressed as a dog

They usually don't have the host on Weekend Update lately

Seth's jokes haven't been good tonight

Weak edition of Weekend Update so far tonight

This segment has zero original material whatsoever

They've done the same shtick earlier this season and a couple of times last season.

Fred Armisen and Vanessa Bayer are playing the same characters that were originally meant to be Kdaffi's two best friends

This segment isn't original at all

These jokes are kind of silly so far

Seth Meyers is stuck with weak material tonight

This is DEFINITELY one of the weakest musical performances of the season so far

Right up there with Drake, Robyn and Kelly Clarkson

"Weekend Update" is on now

Unfortunately, I'm not crazy about this performance

Sh

Lana del Ray doesn't seem to be a very paasionate performer

This performance is lacking A LOT of energy. Also her voice sounds kind of dull.

Lana del Ray is performing now

I'm REALLY looking forward to live-blogging the Golden Globes tomorrow night

That was a good sketch

All the performances were good and the writing was clever as well. First really good sketch of the night

Radcliffe is funny playing a creepy-older version of Harry Potter

I like seeing the SNL cast playing characters from Harry Potter. I like Bill Hader's impression of Alan rickman's character

I like this idea

I like seeing Radcliffe spoofing his trademark character.

Radcliffe playing Harry Potter

Here is the expected Harry Potter sketch

Next sketch is coming up

I don't know much about Channing Tatum

Is he a funny actor? I know he was in "The Dilemma" but I don't know what else he's been in. Hopefully the February 4 show is a good one.

I will say that this sketch went on a tad too long

But it was entertaining

Sudeikis as Joe Biden!

His impression is always funny

I had a feeling that they would do a Broadway-themed sketch with Radcliffe hosting

This is a good parody of those ads for "Jersey Boys"

The performances by all are very good.

This is one of my main problems with SNL lately

Using man-on-man kissing over and over again. Surprising ending though

This is an interesting idea for a filmed short

However, the joke of man-on-man kissing is once again being used as a crutch for the sketch

Radcliffe is a good dancer

I wish he had more to work with. They seem to be giving him little to do

Daniel Radcliffe is very enthusiastic in this sketch

That was funny

I like the performances in this sketch. The writing is alright as well

I like Jason Sudeikis' character

Good to see Vanessa bayer starring in a sketch

She and Bill Hader are doing well together

Show's back

This could be an interesting sketch

Next sketch is coming up

Nice sketch

But I wish that Radcliffe had more to work with

Kristen Wiig is good as always

The performances are good though

Wiig and Radcliffe are doing well together

The jokes in this sketch are getting a tad old

I'm really excited for Kristen Wiig as she's gotten a Golden Globe nomination for her Great performance in "Bridesmaids"

I like the sight of Radcliffe with a mullet

He's doing well with the material has. Bill Hader's walk-on was funny too

I like the sight of Radcliffe with a mullet

He's doing well with the material has. Bill Hader's walk-on was funny too

She's always good as this character

She's always good as this character

Kristen Wiig's Target clerk character

She hasn'[t played this character in a while.

This is a good commercial spoof

I hope that Ricky Gervais hosts SNL one day

They are making fun of Ricky Gervais

Jason Sudeikis' impression is very good

Bobby Moynihan as Snooki walk-on

Interesting monologue but the jokes were a tad predictabke

That was a funny sight gag

I bet there will be some Harry Potter sketch

I like all the call backs to past depictions of Harry Potter on SNL

That was a good joke

I hear that Daniel Radcliffe was good on Broadway

I'm not familar with Lana Del Ray

I hope that Daniel Radcliffe gets good material tonight

With these writers, you never know what will be on

I truly hope this week's show is better than last week's

This is a good opening

As good as Sudeikis' impressionis, I wish that SNL put on a different type of opening this week

The political humor on SNL has been good this season

Sudeikis' impression of Romney is funny as always

Another Political Figure speaks to the camera

Same type of opening as last week

Jason Sudeikis as Mitt Romney

And We're Live....NOW!!!!

It's Getting to that Time

Tonight at 11:30pm, my live coverage of "Saturday Night Live" will begin. I will be commenting on all the sketches and performances that air during the show; which will be hosted by Daniel Radcliffe. I am eagerly awaiting the show; as I think that it will be the last episode to air in January-- and new episodes will start airing again on February 4.

Also, as I said in the previous post, my Internet has been acting wierd today. If it appears that I stopped posting comments during the show; it's only because my Internet went down. Comcast will be checking out my system tomorrow morning; so everything should be up and running for my coverage of the Golden Globes-- which will kick off with the posting of a review of a nominated performance. Trust me, tomorrow is going to be very exciting!

So stay tuned for my live-blogging coverage of NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Make sure you keep refreshing your screens so you can see my latest comments. And don't worry about a thing. I'm posting comments until the show ends or my Internet goes down. Stay tuned and I'll see you at 11:30pm!

A Reminder About Tonight

Tonight, "Saturday Night Live" is all-new with guest host Daniel Radcliffe; who is best known for starring as "Harry Potter" in the well-known franchise of the same name. Joining him as the show's musical guest is Lana Del Ray; who I'm not familiar with. But, I look forward to hearing her music for the first time tonight. I am excited to be commenting on the show as it airs live; sharing my opinions on the show's writing, performances, as well as anything else that comest to mind.

Now, just a word of warning for all of you. My Internet has been going on-and-off today. It was working fine when I woke up this morning; but then it went off for a few hours. It is working now; but I don't knowif it will go off again. If it does go down sometime before the show or even during it, thus disrupting my live-blogging coverage, don't worry. I'm having Comcast check out my system tomorrow morning. henceforth, I'll be able to post my next performance review by tomorrow afternoon and I'll also be able to live-blog the Golden Globes free of any problems. That being said, just to be on the safe side, I will NOT be posting a review after the episode. Instead, I will post an in-depth writing about about the show by Tuesday night at the latest; so you'll be able to get a complete write-out of my opinions of the show. So once again, don't worry if it appears that i stopped posting comments throughout the show; or even if there isn't any posting before the show. It's only because my Internet is experiencing problems. No matter what, everything should be up-and-running tomorror in time for the Golden Globes.

So thank you all for bearing with me tonight. I look forward to posting my comments throughout the show as it airs LIVE!!!! So stay tuned and I'll see you at 11:30pm for NBC's "Saturday Night Live!"

A Notice About this Weekend

This is going to be a busy weekend for "That's Nater-Tainment." I am preparing to do A LOT of blogging as "Saturday Night Live" is all-new tomorrow night and the Golden Globes air Live on NBC Sunday night beginning at 8:00pm. Praying that everything goes well, here's what you can expect:

1. Tmorrow night, I plan on live-blogging "Saturday Night Live;" which is being hosted by "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe. I will be posting my opinions on the writing, performances, and other matters that come to mind during the show. I look forward to posting throughout the show beginning at 11:30pm. So trust me, you do NOT want to miss my coverage of this week's episode of SNL!

2. At some point Sunday afternoon, I plan on posting a performance review of a Golden Globe nominated celebrity. This particular person has been providing us with usually over-the-top performances these past coulple of years; and how this personality has turned in a performance that has been awarded with a Golden Globe nomination. Does this particular person deserve the honor? Don't miss my writing; which will hopefully be up by Sunday at the latest.

3. Before the show takes place, I will be posting some quick predictions as to who I think will win the film categories. These guesses will be based on all the news I have heard on television as well as read in magazine articles regarding their performances. So I'm looking forward to posting ym guesses as to who I think will win.

4. Finally, beginning at 8:00pm, I will be commenting on the ceremony as it airs live on NBC. I will post reactions to which performers and movies are winning as well as anything else that ccomes to mind. I look forward to covering the ceremony; as it is sure to be very exciting.

All in all, a weak show

SNL kicks off 2012 with a not-so stellar episode hosted by Charles Barkley; who hardly contributed anything special in most of the sketches.

The opening sketch was very forgettable; as Andy Samberg portrayed GOP candidate Rock Santorum. His impression was alright and he had a couple of good jokes. Other than that, it was a very listless opening and Samberg failed to get the show started on a memorable note.

For the monologue, I felt that Charles Barkley did a fine job. He handled himself very well and he even had a few funny lines. It was also nice to see an actual monologue for a change.

"Inside the NBA" was the best sketch of the night. While Bill Hader and Jay Pharaoh were both funny, the chemistry between Kenan Thompson and Charles Barkley made the sketch. Thompson does a good job impersonating Barkley and his given dialogue was very funny. In addition, Barkley did a good job spoofing Shaquille O'Neal and I liked how he was a good spot by poking fun at his weight loss. The sketch was very funny and it featured Barkley's best performance of the night.

"White People Problems" proved to be a very silly and rushed sketch. Barkley had a couple funny lines; but his performance was greatly lacking genuine enthusiasm. Jay Pharaoh was funny with the material he was given but I wish he was given more screentime. Kenan was okay as well but his character wasn't very funny at all. Kristen Wiig and Tran Killam were fine with the material they were given; but their appearances in the sketch felt rushed as well. All in all, not a great sketch.

I did not find the sketch where Charles Barkley played a woman that was declaring herself to be a lesbian. Barkley didn't appear very into the sketch and his overall performance came off as being very unenthusiastic. The whole segment was just an excuse for Barkley to dress in drag. The performances by the rest of the cast were very forgettable; as they weren't given anything funny at all. In other words, this wasn't a funny sketch at all.

"Weekend Update" proved to be very weak as well. Seth Meyers only had one really good joke and his others were either just OK or very bad. Kristen Wiig's Michelle Bachmann impression was the only good portion of the weekly news segment. Her delivery was very good and she had some good lines.

The characters portrayed by Fred Armisen and Bobby Moynihan weren't funny at all and it seemed they were only trotted out to fill up time on "Weekend Update;" most likely due to the poor quality of most of Meyers' jokes.

Next up, Featured Player Paul Brittain brought us his character Lorn Wyndemere; who was first seen on Anna Farris' episode this past October. Brittain gave a good performance; but unfortunately, he wasn't given much to work with. Jason Sudeikis made me laugh once again as his character that was overly-excited when watching Brittain's character prance around the room with extreme merriment. In addition, Charles Barkley didn't contribute anything to the sketch en playing his character; as did Andy Samberg-- who was playing the jealous son of Sudeikis' character. Furthermore, the entire sketch felt rushed and it ended very abruptly as well.

The next sketch was the Spike TV Adult Video Awards. The sketch was only an excuse for the writers to come up with names for adult movie stars that mainly consisted of cheap puns. The castmembers and Charles Barkley hardly got to do anything; rather than appear briefly on camera as the respected porn stars that were being honored in an "in memoriam" segment. Bobby Moynihaan briefly impersonated Ron Jeremy; and he wasn't given anything funny to do or say whatsoever. What's more, the entire sketch was very rushed; and just like the previous sketch, it ended WAY TOO abruptly.

The evening's digital short followed; and frankly, I feel it was very pointless. It was just a quick advertisement-spoof for a CD of songs performed by an offbeat singer; played by Andy Samberg. The songs were too short to be considered funny; and Samberg's overall performance was too over-the-top and not at all funny. Once again, Charles Barkley didn't contribute anything whatsoever; as he was only on screen for less than a minute.

The final sketch of the night, which centered upon the creation of the Mayan Calender, actually was an intriguing idea. Unfortunately, the writing wasn't great and the entire segment just wasn't funny. What's more, the castmembers and Charles Barkley didn't have anything to work with; and it just went nowhere. Furthermore, the ending of the sketch was just too silly and failed to close the show on a positive note. In other words, it was just a poor way to end the show.

As for Kelly Clarkson's performances, I don't have much to say. Clarkson's a fine singer; but her particular performances tonight weren't entirely special. What's more, I've heard both songs she performed tonight way too frequently on VH1 Henceforth, I wasn't entirely spellbound by her performances tonight.

And that's it. So much for the first episode of SNL for 2012. Charles Barkley wasn't the best host of the season; and he only performed well during the monologue and the "Inside the NBA' sketch. Other than these instances, Barkley didn't contribute anything special to some of the sketches. Most of his performances were either not funny or not enthusiastic whatsoever. Frankly, I have no idea why he was asked back to host. He may have been a great basketball player; but he's DEFINITELY NOT a great sketch comedy performer.

And that's my review. Thank you all for following me tonight. I had a great time live-blogging the show; and I look forward to doing it again next week when Daniel Radcliffe hosts the show for his first time. Something tells me that he's going to be a VERY enthusiastic host.

Thanks again for following me tonight and I look forward to posting my next big writing sometime this week. Good night everybody!

Well that's the show!

I called an end of the world joke!!!

This isn't funny at all. That was a very dumb ending as well. A fitting end to a weak show.

This is a clever idea for a sketch

But the jokes and writing aren't that great. Barkley isn't being funny at all during this sketch. Not even the castmembers can save this sketch

I'm predicting an end of the world joke

Sketch about the Mayan Calender

This isn't an exciting performance by Kelly Clarkson at all

I have aeeling that there will only be one more sketch tonight after this song

This hasn't been a great show tonight. DEFINITELY NOT a great way to kick off 2012.

Kelly Clarkson is up now

Performing "Mr. Know It All." Just like her first song, this has been played or and over on VH1.

Andy Samberg isn't funny at all during this digital short

Quick appearance by Charles Barkley. And this was ANOTHER segment that was completely rushed; thus ending too abruptly.

This hasn't been a great episode at all so far

Aside from the monologue and impersonating Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley hasn't done anything funny at all

This sketch is just an excuse for the writers to come up with porno names

This isn't funny at all. Just a bunch of dirty puns for names. The sketch was too short as well.

Adult Video AwardsShow

Bobby Moynihaan as Ron Jeremy

Another sketch is coming up

Charles Barkley didn't contribute anything to this sketch whatsoever

This segment aslso ended WAY too abruptly.

Jason Sudeikis is the only person in this sketch that's making me laugh

I'm happy that Paul Brittain gets another reoccurring character. He's a good performer but this character isn't funny. At least Sudeikis is making me laugh though

Paul Brittain's Lord Wynedmere is back

He played this character when Anna Farris hosted this past October

Next sketch is coming up

This hasn't been an entirely great episode tonight

The monologue, Inside the NBA, and Kristen Wiig's Michelle Bachmann impression have been the best parts of the show so far

This is a VERY BAD "weekend Update" segment

Bobby Moynihan ISN'T FUNNY AT ALL as this character

Aside from Kristen Wiig's Michelle Bachmann impression and Seth's "Star Wars" joke

This is a very weak installment of "Weekend Update."

And now Bobby Moynihaan's "Drunk Uncle" character

he did this character this past December. His performance as "Drunk Uncle" isn't funny at all. Just like Armisen's character, this is only an excuse to fill up time on Update.

That was a good "Star Wars" joke by Seth

First REALLY good joke tonight on Update

Seth's jokes tonight are okay

But they are not entirely funny

Armisen usually does the same thing whenever he plays this character

This segment usually justdrags on and on. Tonight is no exception. He's not funny at all when doing this. It's just an excuse to fill up time on "Weekend Update"

Seth Meyers has had better jokes earlier this season

Fred Armisen has done this character before.

Very good performance by Kristen Wiig

The material she was given was very good

Kristen Wiig is very funny

I actually had a feeling that she would be portraying Bachmann tonight

Kristen Wiig as Michelle Bachmann!

I really like her impression

Okay jokes so far

Not great but ok

'Weekend Update"

This song is very repetitive

This wasn't an entirely memorable performance

I've heard this song played a lot on VH1 these past few weeks

I'm not the biggest fan of her. Kelly Clarkson's an alright singer; but this particular performance isn't anything special

Kelly Clarkson is performing now

Kelly Clarkson's performance is coming up

The other sketches have either been silly or very dull

I' starting to have doubts about the rest of the show

The monologue and Inside the NBA have been the best parts of the show so far

This commercial spoof isn't very funny

Charles Barkley's lines haven't been humorous at all.

he audience is hardly laughing during this sketch

As am I. This is a bad one and just an excuse for Barkley to dress in drag

I'm just not feeling it with this sketch

Barkley is hardly trying with this one

Good to see Featured P

layer Paul Brittain in this sketch.

Barkley isn't giving a reat performance in this sketch

He appears awkward in this sketch.

Charles Barkley dressed as a woman!!

I can tell this sketch is going to be really ridiculous.

show's on

Next sketch is almost on

Daniel Radcliffe should be an interesting host next week

I'm not the biggest fan of "Harry Potter;" but I'm interested in seeing him give a comedic performance as the show's host

Interesting commercial spoof

Good spoof of various NFL and ESPN commercials

Kristen Wiig and Taran Killam are giving good performances

As is Charles Barkley. But the material is just plain silly. Not great at all

Jay Pharaoh is funny

but this sketch isn't that great. Also, is Charles Barkley playing himself or a character?

This sketch is kind of silly so far

Kenan in another sketch

I'm betting we see him a lot tonight

White People Problems

Interesting name for a sketch

show's back

Next sketch is coming up

Charles Barkley made me laugh in that sketch

As did Kenan. Good segment. I hope the rest of the show is good as well.

Good joke about "Kazaam"

This is a good sketch.

Kenan does a good impression of Barkley

I like the chemistry between Barkley and Thompson

Charles Barkley is actually making me laugh

Good to see Featured Player Jay Pharaoh in a sketch

Hader is good too.

Charles Barkley a Kenan Thompson have agood back-and-forth going

Inside the NBA

Called Kenan as Charles Barkley. I like Barkley's impression of Shaquille O'Neal

Bill Hader is great too

Kristen Wiig is good as always

Good commercial parody so far

Wow! A REAL monologue.

Barkley did well and he looked comfortable on stage

Funny graphic of Barkley

Charles Barkley has now hosted more times than any basketball player

He DID lose a lot of weight

Good joke

As is Charles Barkley's

This is Kelly Clarkson's third time on SNL

I bet Kenan Thompson does his Charles Barkley impression tonight

I REALLY wish they would have done something special to open the show tonight

Hopefully the show tonight is good

ot a great or memorable opening at all

Those were good jokes though

This opening is dragging

The jokes are Okay but this cold opening is nothing special whatsoever.

The Jokes are nothing special

The Jokes are nothing special

I wish they would have created a special opening for the first show of 2012

Not a very exciting opening so far

His overall impression is alright

Samberg actually resembles Rick Santorum

Andy Samberg as Rick Santorum

And We Are Live......NOW!!!!!!

From the Mind of Nate: My View on the State of "Saturday Night Live's" Thirty-Seventh Season

Well it’s officially 2012! The New Year has begun and the current television season has reached its halfway-mark. As various talk shows have returned to the airwaves this week with brand new episodes, we can easily look forward to to many surprises. And tonight, NBC’s Saturday Night Live’s” Thirty-Seventh season returns from its holiday break with its eleventh episode; which is being hosted by Former Basketball Player Charles Barkley-- who will be joined by Kelly Clarkson as the show's musical guest. And, as preparing to live-blog this evening’s show, I can wholeheartedly look back on the current state of my favorite sketch-comedy program. Throughout the past ten episodes, I have seen sketches which contained routines and puchlines that were repeated in an effort to fill up time; as well as sketches that din't contain any humor whatsoever. However, in all honesty, I have to admit that the many performances by the cast and the hosts have allowed me to laugh repeatedly as well as sincerely. Thus, in all frankness, I can say:

Even Though the Writing's Not Entirely Great, “Saturday Night Live’s” Thirty-Seventh Season Has Been Fine; Thanks in Large Part to Good Performances by the Castmembers and the Hosts

During the 2010-2011 season, “Saturday Night Live” was in a dismal state. The writers were hardly showing any effort when creating sketches for the long-running sketch comedy series. Talented castmembers like Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig were assigned to play one-note characters that delivered the same shtick every time they appeared. Also, in an attempt to get cheap laughs from the audience, the writers loaded-up many segments with juvenile humor; such as man-on-man kissing and frequent jokes about intercourse. In addition, talented first-time hosts like Bryan Cranston and Ed Helms were subjected to playing minor roles in sketches that didn't enable them to bestow a mmemorable performance. In other words, the series’ thirty-sixth season could be considered a one of the most listless years in the history of the program; seeing as there was hardly any effort being done to make the show memorable.

However, when the show’s current season kicked off on September 24, I noticed that there was a significant change in the air. I noticed that all through the premier show, which was being emceed by Alec Baldwin, who was celebrating his record-breaking sixteenth hosting stint, I felt as if the show’s writers were trying to come up with original and creative ideas for sketches. In fact, throughout the first half of the show, which started off with a very funny sketch poking fun at the most recent Republican debate, was rich in both inspired writing and great performances by the cast and Baldwin. It should be mentioned that the opening segment contained humorous portrayals of the GOP candidates; among which including Jason Sudeikis hilariously-portraying a very overly-modest Mitt Romney as well as Kristen Wiig comically-depicting a sharp-tongued Michelle Bachmann. In addition, Baldwin’s representation of a rambling Rick Perry proved to be the icing on the cake; thus starting off the premier episode on a high note. The momentum continued throughout the show; including the monologue, in which Steve Martin, who previously held the record for hosting the program for the most times with a total of fifteen instances, subjected Baldwin to a drug test that was designed to see if he was hosting the show without the aid of supplements. And even though the show’s writing began to wither throughout the second half of the program, Baldwin and the cast presented the audience with great performances that truly saved the show from becoming unremarkable. Thus, thanks to Alec Baldwin, “Saturday Night Live’s” thirty-seventh season really did begin on a very energetic note. And it would not stop there.

On October 1, Melissa McCarthy, who proved to be a major scene-stealer this past summer R-rated comedy “Bridesmaids,” served as the sketch-comedy program’s host for the first time. Though many of the sketches suffered from inadequate writing, seeing as most of the sketches did depend on the same punchlines being repeated, McCarthy’s vast enthusiasm proved to be a tremendous asset for the show. The first-time host was willing to go the extra mile in every sketch; including excitedly dousing herself with salad dressing during one particular segment in which she portrayed a member of a focus group that was asked to taste new samples of Hudson Valley Ranch Dressing. It should also be mentioned that McCarthy had very good chemistry with the cast; primarily Jason Sudeikis; who, during one sketch, portrayed a hapless employee that was being subjected to an overly-flirtatious employee that was being portrayed by the comedienne. McCarthy even got the opportunity to work alongside her “Bridesmaids” co-star Kristen Wiig for a couple of segment; including the monologue, during which the two ladies demonstrated series of comical dance moves. In other words, the whole episode proved to be quite memorable; primarily due to Melissa McCarthy and strong commitment to giving a truly hilarious performance. Thus, as we saw on the season premier, the performances of the hosts and the castmembers enabled the quality of the show to be much better than it could have been.

And this concept is evident in most episodes that followed. Even though the writing has been unsatisfactory, the performances by the hosts and the castmembers guaranteed laughter. And when certain jokes keep being repeated throughout a designated segment, the performers’ acting and deliveries emerge as a significant bright spot. For instance, in a segment that took place on November 19, Kristen Wiig played an employee that was being encouraged to give a speech about her retiring employer; played silently by fellow castmember Fred Armisen. Throughout the piece, Wiig’s character constantly screeched that she had nothing to say at all; causing her fellow employees to be very put off. Though the writing was very insufficient, Wiig’s overall delivery was enough to make me laugh; mainly due to her over-the-top performance. In addition, episode host Jason Segel amusingly played a fellow worker who repeatedly claimed that he had a shocking revelation about his retiring boss; thus adding an extra dynamic to the sketch. Thus, even though certain plot points kept being repeated throughout the segment, the overall performances turned in by both Kristen Wiig and Jason Segel made the sketch worthwhile.

Another sketch that took place this season that suffered from bad writing took place on November 5 when Jason Sudeikis’ “Horrible Bosses” co-star Charlie Day hosted for his first. In this particular segment, Day played an actor filming a family movie about a boy’s relationship with a dolphin. Throughout the segment, Charlie Day’s character was being constantly annoyed by the dolphin’s trainer, played by Featured Player Taran Killam, who kept stomping his foot and making noises in an attempt to get the aquatic mammal to behave properly. The joke of Day’s character being irritated by the trainer’s actions wore thin and made it seem like it was an attempt to drag out the sketch. Nevertheless, the acting of both Charlie Day and Taran Killam made up for the joke being dragged into the ground. In addition, castmember Kenan Thompson, who played a boom mic operator that constantly was unable to get a sound out of Day’s character, managed to get laugh out of me when he kept claiming that he could do a better job with the scene—mainly due to the manner in which the dialogue was spoken. Furthermore, in a segment towards the end of the show, Charlie Day played a detective investigating a murder that constantly denied that he knew of various pop culture allusions brought forward by a police officer; played by Jason Sudeikis. Though the writing was unsatisfactory throughout the sketch, the brilliant chemistry between both performers was a delight to watch and their antics made me laugh wholeheartedly. In other words, even when the material being presented by the show’s writers was very insufficient, the top-notch acting by the performers guaranteed a positive impact. Image of Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis taken from http://www.google.com/imgres?q=%22Saturday+Night+Live%22+%2B+%22Charlie+Day%22+AND+%22Jason+Sudeikis%22&hl=en&sa=G&biw=1229&bih=570&tbm=isch&tbnid=MV1tXQsvimfcSM:&imgrefurl=http://warmingglow.uproxx.com/2011/11/get-excited-for-charlie-day-on-snl&docid=XYIEVIzRXrqKvM&imgurl=http://cdn.wg.uproxx.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/charlie-day-snl.jpg&w=650&h=369&ei=sbUIT8_xGYqrgwf1x_GzAg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=391&sig=103715830871851290833&page=1&tbnh=109&tbnw=147&start=0&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0&tx=62&ty=62

This is further proven when observing the performances of some other hosts. For instance on December 3, Steve Buscemi too to the stage for his second time: his first being on April 4, 1998. Throughout the show, Buscemi's acting skills helped elevate the quality of some of the weaker sketches; one of which centered abound one of Kristen Wiig's reoccurring character. This particular on-screen persona of Wiig's, an overly-excited emplyee named Sue, grew more excited over a co-worker's surprise promotion as the sketch went on. While Wiig gave an amusing performance, the sketch suffered to the fact that the format followed the exact same format as every other instance in which the character appears. Nevertheless, in addition to Wiig's performance, Steve Buscemi enabled the sketch further due to his ability to hold his ground and portray a very good straightman. In addition, Buscem's overall performance as host was very memorable; as his comic delivery meshed well with the acting of the cast. Furthermore, we got a couple of segments in which Steve Buscemi got to play a well-developed character; such examples included a coach that was being suspected of conducting inappropriate behavior towards high school students-- even though there was no evidence that proved such a thing. Henceforth, just as we have seen with Alec Baldwin, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel and Charlie Day, Steve Buscemi went on as being a host whose acting and comic skills was enough to vastly improve the quality of the sketches in a given show.

However, this is not always the case. There have been instances this season in which the performances by the castmembers and a specific host are not enough to save a given sketch or even a large portion of a specific episode. For example, on November 12, Emma Stone, who first hosted on October 23, 2010, was unfortunately given an assortment of sketches that weren't etirely funny or unforgettable. In one such sketch, the actress played an out-of-touch party guest at a bridal shower who gave out very badly chosen gifts to an about-to-be bride played by Kristen Wiig. Though Stone gave a good performance, the sketch proved to be very awkward and didn't really go anywhere. In addition, the enthusiastic performances by Stone and the cast were not enough to save most of the episode; as many sketches consisted of sketches that weren't written well at all. Only one sketch proved to be funny and memorable; as it took the form of a group of co-workers getting emotional when listening to Adele’s hit song “Someone like You.” All the performances were good and I liked the idea of a group of people coming together through the power of music. Nevertheless, even though the sketches were performed well, the episode was grealy affected by poor writing.

It should also be mentioned that the overall performance of a specific host can be cause an entire episode to be a complete failure . On December 10, singer Katy Perry took the stage as the show’s host and failed to give a great performance. Nearly every sketch revolved around Katy Perry singing; thus causing her to be a very one-dimensional host. And, whenever she didn’t sing, Katy Perry appeared very uncomfortable and failed to display any good comedic timing. This also caused the show to be filled with many segments that consisted of no humor whatsoever. Thus, Perry failed to turn in a memorable performance; thus resulting in her being the season’s worst host. She also caused this particular episode to easily be the worst of the season so far.

At this point, you might be wondering who I think was this season’s best emcee so far. Well, on December 17, the last episode of 2011, we were treated to a very special Christmas episode. Former Castmember and current host of NBC’s “Late Night” Jimmy Fallon returned to bring the holiday cheer. Nearly every sketch this particular episode consisted of intriguing writing, first-class performances, and genuine humor. Fallon treated us to a rousing musical monologue that successfully combined celebrating the holidays with his returning to host “Saturday Night Live” for the first time. We were also treated to some very creative sketches; such as Fallon portraying Ludwig Van Beethoven introducing the members of his orchestra- as well as a segment in which theatergoers were presented to an unconventional staging of the well-known play “War Horse.” We even got to see surprise appearances by Jimmy Fallon’s fellow alumni Rachel Dratch, Horatio Sanz, Chris Kattan, Tracy Morgan, Amy Poehler, and Tina fey; the latter two joining “Weekend Update” Anchor Seth Meyers and Former Comedy Joke-Newscaster Fallon for an exciting and humorous “Weekend Update Joke-Off.” But, most importantly, throughout the show, Jimmy Fallon’s comedic talents and genuine zest shined brightly in every sketch even during a weakly-written sketch that he and Kristen Wiig were able to save thanks to their great performances. In other words, Jimmy Fallon proved to be the season’s greatest host so far; and his episode may well have been the best one this season as of yet! That truly is a major accomplishment!

When looking back on my writing, I can honestly say that even though the writing hasn’t been entirely great, Season Thirty-Seven of “Saturday Night Live” really is a much better season than last year’s; thanks in large part to many of the great performances by the cast and many of the show’s hosts. I am really excited about the second half of the season; which will start tonight. I greatly hope that Charles Barkley can continue the energy ignited by Jimmy Fallon. I look forward to live-blogging the show; commenting on all the performances by the cast and our host. And who knows? Maybe tonight’s show will be a good one. All we can do is just wait and see. After all, we don’t know how 2012 will turn out for all of us. Hopefully, this year will be great for us and “Saturday Night Live.” Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: I’ll see you once the show starts at 11:30pm on NBC!
