Reminder About Tomorrow Night

The Academy Awards Are Coming! The Academy Awards Are Coming!
My Hopes for the Winners of This Year's Academy Awards!!!!
1. For best supporting actress, I really hope that The King’s Speech’s Helena Bonham Carter wins for her graceful performance as Elizabeth; the eventual Queen of England. Throughout the film, Carter portrayed a woman who loves her husband and remained by his side at all times. In fact, it was because she loved her husband that she found and eventually hired Lionel Logue to help Duke Albert overcome his stutter and restore his confidence. Carter’s Elizabeth was a great portrayal that was both emotional and powerful. Henceforth I really hope that Helena Bonham Carter wins the award for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Oscars.
2. For Best Supporting Actor, I find myself struggling between The King’s Speech’s Geoffrey Rush and The Fighter’s Christian Bale. When playing Lionel Logue, Rush gave a top-notch and strong performance as he guides Colin Firth’s Duke Albert through many unorthodox lessons designed to help overcome his stutter as well as his fear of eventually inheriting the royal throne. However, when portraying Dickie Ekland in The Fighter, Christian Bale literally went the extra mile to ensure a convincing performance as he lost a significant amount of weight; so that he perfectly resembled Mark Whalberg’s Micky Ward’s brother and trainer. In addition as evident by the film’s end credits, it is clear to see that Bale got Ekland’s physical mannerisms exactly correct; as actual footage of the two brothers is shown to the audiences. Plus, Bale had to develop a New England accent; which required a lot of training as the actor is actually British. So, when comparing the performances of the two actors, I believe that while Geoffrey Rush gave a terrific performance, I think that Christian Bale’s performance is more unforgettable; and henceforth, I think he will win this category and I hope he does. But if Rush does win Best Supporting Actor I will still be happy.
3. In the Best Animated Movie Category, I hope that Toy Story 3 is the victor. Never have I seen such a heartfelt computer-Animated film. I feel that Woody the Cowboy, Buzz Lightyear, and all their friends were designed with great and vibrant colors, strong voice recordings by a talented ensemble of performers, as well as a lot of emotion and heart. The story of the toys facing a plague of uncertainty as their owner is heading off to college provided a lot of interesting twists and turns as they mistakenly get donated to a daycare center and I was on the edge of my seat as they faced many challenges on their way back home. And throughout the film, we laugh, cry, and root for our heroes; a feeling that I hold very significantly as I love films with characters that you can root and sympathize with. Thus, I really hope that Toy Story 3 wins Best Animated Film and I think that it will.
4. In the Best Actor Category, I definitely am hoping that Colin Firth is the ultimate victor. As the then-Duke-and-Eventual King of England, Firth gave a performance that was perfect on all accounts. As Duke Albert, Firth portrays a political figure that is stricken with panic as his father, the current King of England, is dying and passes his Kinghood to Albert’s brother David; who doesn’t take his reign seriously and spends his time flirting with an American divorce’. Thus, Firth’s Albert’s stutter gets more severe and it is up to Lionel Logue to help the troubled Duke overcome his plight. And all the scenes featuring Firth and Rush interrelating are exciting to watch; as their performances are dramatic, touching, and even humorous at times as well. And, any scenes featuring Firth’s Albert communicating with Helena Bonham Carter’s Elizabeth are all very emotional as she always stands by her husband and loves him with all her heart. And Colin Firth gves the performance of a lifetime and I hope he wins the Prestigious Best Actor Award. And I think it will definitely happen.
5. Which brings me to the Best Picture Category. As you can tell from this entry as well as many of my past ones, you know that I really want The King’s Speech wins the big award of the night. After all, the movie is very touching, historically correct, and even funny at times as well. It’s just a wonderful story about overcoming a disability as well as fear through the power of friendship and love. Duke Albert’s lessons with Lionel Logue led to a meaningful and powerful companionship. And the love that Elizabeth and her daughters Margaret and Elizabeth had for Albert was strong and faithful; and they stood by him and kept his spirits up throughout his troubles. And eventually, Duke Albert overcomes his fear and his speech impediment and rises to the occasion; thus becoming a great king. Therefore it is a real and powerful story about the goodness of man and I hope that it wins the title of Best Film at this year’s Oscars.
Well, there you have it. I’m really excited about seeing this year’s prestigious awards ceremony and it’s definitely going to be a momentous night. And as I watch James Franco and Anne Hathaway host the festivities, I will be blogging live and reacting to all the winners, losers, and occurrences taking place on the stage. So keep checking my blog during the event and I’ll keep you informed of everything that is taking place. So stay tuned to Sunday night. It will definitely be a night to remember.

That's Nater-Tainment Special Report: My View on The Current Saturday Night Live

However, in 1995, a new performer came along who proved to be the ultimate utility player. This person was Will Ferrell; who played vibrant characters such as Craig the Cheerleader, Roxbury Guy Doug Butabi, and Professor Roger Klarvin. Ferrell also performed impressions of noteworthy figures such as Former President George W. Bush, Former Attorney General Janet Reno, and frustrated Jeopardy host Alex Trebek. These impressions would be completely dead-on, completely cartoonish in nature, or even a combination of both. Nevertheless, Ferrell kept audiences laughing throughout his seven years as a cast member; until he left the show in 2002 in pursue in inevitably successful film career. Meanwhile, Weekend Update was being helmed by the well-crafted combination of reliable sketch-performer Jimmy Fallon and Head Writer Tina Fey; two people who provided a strong stage performance and a necessary spark of energy that was vital to the show’s longevity. However, Fallon left in 2004 and Fey remained as Head Writer as well as co-anchor of the long-running news segment. And to help her out, the enigmatic and talented Amy Poehler took over for Fallon; and the show was safe until 2006; when Fey left to create and star in the successful NBC sitcom 30 Rock. Little did everyone know that this was leading up to the darkness that is the current SNL.

And this brings me to asking this question: why does the Saturday Night Live writing staff rehash sketches that aren’t entirely funny to begin with? It makes sense to repeat sketches that always guarantee laughs; such as The Coneheads, Wayne’s World, and Celebrity Jeopardy. Plus, when hosts are allowed to actually star in a frequent sketch, it allows everyone to be treated with something different in every installment. But, when a sketch is repeated that ends up delivering the same basic punch line, there is nothing new to guarantee honest hilarity. Furthermore, the hosts are not allowed to showcase their spot on comedy skills are thus left with playing a one-dimensional role. Also, the writers are not allowing the cast to exhibit all their comic abilities; and that’s unfortunately causing the show to suffer significantly. Therefore, I feel it’s a shame to see what Saturday Night Live has become and I don’t like seeing comedy that is being rehashed cheaply and ineffectively.

So you might be asking yourself now: “Why does Nate continue to watch the show if it is suffering so much?” Well I do so because amidst all the bad writing and weak sketches, I still believe that the cast is very talented. For Instance, I really think that Bill Hader is the best cast member on the show due to his creative characters, such as Weekend Update Nightlife Expert Stefon, and his dead-on impressions of personalities such as Alan Alda, James Carville, and Vincent Price. I also feel that Jason Sudekis is a reliable sketch performer as well; as he can play the straight man of a sketch and serve as an impressionist himself- as we have seen him play Vice President Joe Biden with such great enthusiasm and immense folly. Plus, even though I grow tired of her characters, I still think that Kristen Wiig is very talented and every week I hope the writers use her humor effectively. Furthermore, I also like the work of the new featured players as well, particularly Jay Pharoah, who has showcased dead-on impressions of Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, and Will Smith; and has thus brought a new strength to the show. But, I really enjoy seeing who is hosting that evening and how he or she will work with the cast. And even if they don’t get to star in every sketch, he or she still gets at least two or three pivotal roles during the course of the evening; allowing the audience to enjoy their total performance. In fact I could go as far as to say that even though the writing is not up to par as past seasons, there are still one or two complete bright spots in every episode that is worthy of my laughter and my time.

From the Mind of Nate: My View on Modern Comedy and its Evolution
Image taken from http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/638/638869/virgin_carrell_bedroom_1123186468.jpg
The significant success of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" as well as 2007’s "Knocked Up", Apatow’s second directorial feature which headlined Rogen, lead to the coming-of-age high school comedy "Superbad"; which he produced and featured Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as the film’s leads. In addition, 2008’s hit romantic comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", which Apatow also produced and starred Jason Segal, depicted the difficulty of getting over a break-up and the seriousness of maintaining a relationship; also received critical praise for the comedic and emotional performances of the performers. However, while these movies were very successful in providing audiences with laughs and high-flying emotions, none of them received any major rewards or nominations at all. But the seeds were in place for comedies that were to be released in the near future.
