I was expecting a more exciting show to mark Lohan's return to SNL; but unfortunately, the writing wasn't entirely up to par as I expected it to be. What a surprise.
The cold opening was good and all the performances were great. I always like bill Hader's creepy presentation of Sheperd Smith; and the references to "Psycho" were very funny. It was great too see Sudeikis' impression of Mitt Romney again; and I liked the characterization of Romney's eerie sons. Andy Samberg did a funny Kid Rock impression and Kristen Wiig was very funny as Romney's wife. I do wish that the writers would have come up with something a tad more special; but it was a good opening nevertheless.
Lindsay Lohan's monologue was alright; and I liked seeing the castmembers act like police offices and inspect Lohan as if she was a crime suspect. Jimmy Fallon made a good surprise appearance; and I also got a very big laugh from seeing Jon Hamm; as he's always funny whenever he's on. Lohan handled herself well and she played off everyone nicely.
I did like the commercial paryody of "Real Housewives" featuring Spoiled Disney Princesses. All the women did a good job with their performances; especially Kristen Wiig-- who did great portraying a very snooty and rude Cimderella. I also thought that Tara Killam did a good job portraying Prince Charming; his delivery was very funny and he had some good lines. It was a creative spoof; though it did run a tad long by the end.
The psychic awards sketch was a creative idea; but it was very rushed. Andy Samberg did a good job as his character; but I feel that Lohan didn't really contribute anything. I got a laugh out of all the psychics seeing how they would mess up their acts in the future ur die in the upcoming year; though I wish there would have been more to the sketch.
Scared straight was brought back; and I have to say that Kenan's performance wasn't great at all. All the jokes abut rape wren't funny at all; as they were very tasteless and they were mainly executed to get a cheap laugh from the audience. I did like the fact that Lohan was playing herself; and she did a good job poking fun at her stealing of a necklace/ The performances by everyone else were OK; but Lohan's jokes about herself were the only good parts of the sketch.
Weekend Update was a mixed bag. Some of Seth Meyers' jokes were funny, such as the Seth Rogen jab, and a couple others; but his first couple jokes weren't very hilarious. Bill Hader gave a very funny performance as James Carville; but unfortunately, the writing wasn't very amusing. Hader made me laugh due to his mannerisms and delivery; but I wish he had been given better jokes. I liked seeing Bobby Moynihan playing Snooki once again; and Jon Hamm's cameo was very funny and unexpected as well. All in all, though it wasn't great, it was better than some other installments of Weekend Update this season.
The Delinquent Girl Squad sketch wasn't funny at all; as it was an excuse for Andy Samberg and Fred Armisen to dress in drag. The reoccurring joke about Fred Armisen's character constantly getting hit by a car grew old very fast and it wasn't at all humorous. His performance wasn't great at all; and Lohan didn't contribute anything special to the sketch.
The morning DJs sketch wasn't great either; but Bobby Moynihan and Taran Killam did a good job with their performances. Lindsay Lohan did alright with her performance; but she didn't really get the opportunity to be very funny with her role. Vanessa Bayer did a good job playing the quiet newscaster that seems out of place on the show; and her delivery was pretty amusing.
I did like the sketch that featured Kristen Wiig and Lindsay Lohan; the latter playing a house sitter for Kristen Wiig's character. Wiig's persona getting more and more freaked out by the excessive phone calls was very funny; and Lohan did a good job playing the straightwoman of the sketch. I do have to say that the ultimate payoff came off as being very silly as well as appearing as a cheap way to get a laugh from the audience. But Kristen Wiig's performance saved the ending from being completely poor.
Andy Samberg's "Rude Buddha" sketch wasn't funny at all; as the joke of him insulting his followers behind their backs was way-too obvious and not very funny. Lindsay Lohan didn't really get to be funny at all in this sketch; and it ended her night on a weak note.
I have to say that Jack White gave a good performance tonight as the show's musical guest. I really liked his first song alot; as it had a good sound and he gave a good vocal performance. His second song was fine; but it was a tad loud and not very catchy. All in all, Jack White was alright; but there has been better musical guests this season.
As for Lindsay Lohan, I'm disappointed; as I feel that she really didn't get to do alot of funny stuff tonight. She played the straight role in many of her sketches; and only got to be truly funny when she poked fun at herself in the scared straight sketch. I was expecting her to get more humorous material to mark her return to SNL; but I feel the writers could have done a better job. She performed alright with what she had; but she didn't really make me laugh alot-- outside of making fun of herself in the scared straight sketch. She also didn't seem very enthusiastic during the night; as she seemed to have more energy during her previous hosting appearances. I wouldn't mind seeing her back again next season; I just hope she gets to do more.
And that's my live-blogging coverage. I'm looking forward to seeing Jonah Hill host next week; and I have a feeling that he'll actually be very funny on the show. I just hope the writers give him good material.
That's it for tonight. Thank you for following me and I look forward to posting my next writing. Good night everyone!

Nate - I think your review is on the money and you did a great job of breaking down the skits. The only thing that I'm not 100% with you on is Lohan's performance. I agree with you that she did do a good job of poking fun of herself, but feel her acting/ joke delivery was poor (to be kind).
ReplyDeleteGreat review once again Nate! Looking forward to the next one!
