Anne Hathaway did the best she could. But unfortunately, the writing wasn't entirely there tonight.
The show's cold opening featured a good performance from Jason Sudeikis. His impression of Mitt Romney was very good as always. Kate McKinnon was also good as Ann Romney and Taran Killam was amusing alright as Tagg Romney. Though the writing wasn't great, I did like the joke that all of Mitt Romney's sons look alike. Bobby Moynihan's impression of Karl Rove was weak and the overall the quality of the writing wasn't very hilarious. I have to say, however, the ending was very sweet with Sudeikis' Mitt Romney and Kate McKinnon's Ann Romney. Not an entirely great opening but alright.
Anne Hathaway's monologue was very entertaining and it featured good performances from all the castmembers. Various jokes were great; such as the featured players saying that they wouldn't be in the show that much because they're new. I figured that they would do a musical monologue tonight; considering that Anne Hathaway is starring in the film version of "Les Miserables." This was a fun monologue and it was great seeing the entire SNL cast on stage at once.
The Girlfriend Talk Show sketch featured good performances from Nasim Pedrad, Aidy Bryant, and Anne Hathaway. Unfortunately, the writing wasn't great at all and there was practically nothing there that was funny. Just a very weak sketch.
The digital short was quite funny; but it was very strange. Taran Killam gave a good performance and Anne Hathaway was funny as well. Kenan Thompson's singing blended in well with the bizarre nature of the sketch and I liked seeing Killam get such a prominent role in a pre-recorded short film. I will say that there were parts of that were slightly over-the-top and the ending was abrupt. However, the whole short film reminded me of similar short pieces that Andy Samberg had done on the show when he was a castmember. I truly think that SNL has found first big viral hit since Samberg left this past May.
The Showtime parody was pretty funny and featured good performances from Anne Hathaway, Taran Killam, and the other performers. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the show that was being spoofed; but I read on a website that it was a spoof of Showtime's hit series "Homeland." I haven't seen the show before so; so, unfortunately, I didn't get a lot of the jokes. The performances were good and it was a nicely-paced sketch overall.
The McDonald's sketch wasn't funny at all! Bobby Moynihan's and Cecily Strong's performances were completely over-the-top and the writing wasn't hilarious. The joke of the two characters insulting their fellow employees grew tiring after a while and the sketch just seemed written as a way to fill airtime. The ending wasn't funny and I found myself more irritated than amused. I could actually see Moynihan's and Strong's characters being repeated during a future show.
"Weekend Update" was very weak tonight. Seth Meyers seemed to be rushing through all his jokes and not one of them were funny. Jay Pharoah's impression of President Obama was good again; unfortunately, the material wasn't funny at all. I do not like jokes about Rape; and I found that portion of his segment to be very unfunny and very distasteful. Fred Armisen's and Bill Hader's "2 Gay Guys from Maine"-bit was basically a rehash of previous times the two performers executed similar routines. Their performances were alright; though the writing was very weak. I have nothing to say about Bobby Moynihan's "Drunk Uncle" character. His whole segment wasn't hilarious AT ALL and it went on for too long. I don't know why Bobby Moynihan's character is such a hit with the audience; seeing as the segment isn't very funny and his performance is borderline irritating. Just a very bad and very long edition of "Weekend Update" this week.
The "Ellen DeGenerous" parody featured a very good impression of the comedienne from Kate McKinnon. Unfortunately, the sketch didn't really go anywhere and the joke of DeGenerous dancing a lot grew old fast. Anne Hathaway did a good job with her Katie Holmes impression; but she hardly got to do anything. This was a weak sketch.
The American Gothic sketch was GREAT!!! Though my computer froze briefly, I was still able to watch it. It was a very creative sketch and Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis were hilarious together. They possessed great chemistry and exhibited hilarious performances. I loved the pair going through the different poses for the protrait of the iconic painting. Though the sketch did run just a tad long, Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis were both hilarious and the ending was very funny! Very creative and enjoyable sketch.
Closing the show with a pre-recorded commercial spoof was just weak. It was a good parody of cold medication advertisements and all the performances were good. Though I wish the show closed with an actual sketch.
And that's the show. Aside from a few pieces, this was a weak show. Anne Hathaway really didn't have a lot to work with and I feel that she was wasted in some of the sketches. However, she gave good performances in every sketch; as did Jason Sudeikis and Taran Killam-- the latter of whom dominated the whole night as he appeared almost every segment. He must be getting groomed to be the new male lead once Jason Sudeikis leaves.
As for Rhianna, I have nothing to say. Both of her performances were very forgettable and her overall singing was very bland. I have no idea why she keeps appearing as the musical guest; but she's now appeared on the show for four seasons in a row. I guess we can expect her to appear next season as well.
Thus, that's it. This was a very weak show and I have no idea why the writing was subpar. Usually, after an election the writers have a lot to work with. But unfortunately, I feel that the writers weren't at the top of their game this week. Anne Hathaway is very good comedic performer whenever she hosts SNL; but the writers practically let her down this time. Hopefully she gets better material the next time she hosts.
That's my review. Thank you for following my blog and I wish you all a good night!
