My Next Post Will Be- "My Top 10 Films of 2012"

I didn't get a lot of time to work on my blog this week because I've been getting ready for the upcoming holiday.  Also, because I hadn't been feeling well, I had to take care of some matters I didn't get around to last week.  I'm also going away early tomorrow morning for the holiday weekend.

However, I will be returning mid-next week, and before the year comes to an end, I will be posting my most preferred films of this year.  I have seen a lot of films and I'm narrowing them all down to my 10 Absolute Favorites.  Which movies will make the cut?  Which films won't?  You'll just have to wait and see.

So have a wonderful and safe holiday and stay tuned for my Top 10 Films of 2012!

I Will Not be Live-Blogging "Saturday Night Live" Tonight

Due to health-related issues, I will not be doing my regular SNL coverage this evening.  I apologize for the lack of updates this week.  I haven't been feeling very since Monday.  Expect my next article to be posted sometime this week.

I apologize once again and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment!

"Saturday Night Live" Mini-Episode Review: Jamie Foxx / Ne-Yo

All in all, last night's episode of “Saturday Night Live” proved to be a mixed bag of sorts; with the best material airing after “Weekend Update.” For a majority of the first hour, the writers seemed to be relying on consuming sketches with over-used methods of getting laughs from the audience: coarse-language as the main basis of a sketch's humor, phony accents, and repetitive jokes. In the last half hour, however, we got to see a couple creative sketches that were both well-written and well-performed. In addition, Jamie Foxx, though he gave a very enthusiastic performance throughout the night, came off as slightly obnoxious for the show's first hour. I'm not sure if it was the fault of the writers having assigned him lousy roles, or if it was his attitude in the first cluster of sketches. Later in the show, however, Foxx toned down his act a bit and turned in some humorous performances. Below is a short rundown of every sketch.

Fiscal Cliff Address: This wasn't a very bad cold opening at all. It was good to see Jay Pharoah portray President Barack Obama once again; as he does well with the impression. Pharoah has been doing well this season; as he appears more confident in sketches and he seems to have developed a better stage presence. Bill Hader was also very good as John Boehner; especially as he was able to maintain his crushed facial expression throughout the opening sketch. The writing wasn't bad at all and I laughed when Hader's John Boehner broke down into tears when confessing the prankish behavior he was being subjected to by his own political party. This wasn't poor at all and it was better than some of the previous episodes' cold openings.

Jamie Foxx's Monologue: This was just all over the place. While I was happy to see Jamie Foxx get the chance to do some stand-up comedy , I was very happy; as musical monologues have been overdone this season. Unfortunately, Foxx's material wasn't funny at all. When he began to play piano, I sighed heavily; seeing as we just saw Jeremy Renner play the musical instrument when he hosted the previous live episode on November 17th. What's more, Foxx hardly sang at all and he then performed an impromptu rap number with a guest rapper. This was just too much stuff crammed into one monologue and I was relieved when the whole thing ended.

First Game Show Sketch: This was a TERRIBLE opening sketch. I do not find anything funny about employing coarse language as the basis of a sketch's humor; and Jamie Foxx's performance came off as being obnoxious. I found myself wishing that the sketch would end quickly; and I was happy to see it come true. I will say that, however, Bobby Moynihan gave a somewhat amusing performances as one of the contestants who had enough of the host's behavior as well as the game itself. This was a very bad opening sketch.

J-Pop American Funtime Now: This was just a basic carbon copy of previous installments of this sketch. I must applaud Taran Killam and Vanessa Bayer on their enthusiastic performances; but other than that, I was not very happy with this piece. The over-using of phony Japanese accents wasn't at all humorous and the bit grew tiresome very rapidly. In addition, Jamie Foxx added nothing special as his character, and his entire performance came off as objectionable. I was also disappointed to see Jason Sudeikis be given practically nothing to do; which is a shame, because his performance as the students', played by Killam and Bayer, hapless advisor. In short terms, the whole segment just wasn't funny.

Alex Cross 2: This was a creative idea, though it went on a bit long. I liked seeing Jamie Foxx star in this short commercial spoof, and he did a good job mimicking the voice of Tyler Perry's Madea. And though the segment was filmed very well, it wasn't very funny and it was slightly predictable. Usually, SNL does some good film spoofs, but this one wasn't anything special.

Weekend Update: This week's edition was a mixed bag. Seth Meyers actually had some good jokes tonight; such as his cracks about Anderon Cooper, Twitter, and Hanukkah. Aidy Bryant gave a good performance as Ms. Claus.; though the writing for her segment wasn't that funny; as I'm getting very tired the utilization of cheap dirty language to get laughs from the audience. In addition, as much as I like seeing the show's host appear on “Weekend Update,” Jamie Foxx's performance as a Hostess Ding-Dong wasn't funny at all.  In short terms, aside from some of Seth Meyers' jokes, this was a pretty weak installment of “Weekend Update.”

McDermott or Mulroney?: This was a a funnier and more creative game show sketch than the one earlier in the show. The idea of the contestants, played by Jamie Foxx, Kenan Thompson, and Jay Pharoah, not being able to tell the difference between Dylan McDermott and Dermott Mulroney, while very repetitive, made me laugh just by everyone's delivery. In addition, Bill Hader gave a very funny performance as the host who kept making the contestants even more confused through his clues. Furthermore, Dermott Mulroney's cameo towards the end was humorous; and I thought the idea of even he himself not knowing if he was Dylan McDermott. The ending of the sketch also provided a good laugh. All in all, this was a creative and funny sketch.

Tree Pimp: While I applaud SNL for taking a creative turn in their short films, I did not find this very funny. Kenan Thompson gave a good performance, but the idea of people making out with Christmas trees is both ridiculous and slightly perturbing. The documentary concept was an interesting idea, but the entire sketch went on a bit too long. I truly hope that SNL comes up with some better short films in the future.

Maine Justice: Easily the best sketch of the night. SNL usually does very funny courtroon sketches, and this was no exception. Right when Jason Sudeikis came out as the judge, I knew this was going to be hilarious. Sudeikis' comically over-the-top Cajun accent had me laughing a lot and his entire performance was terrific. Jamie Foxx was also very funny as the bailiff; and he shared some very good exchanges with Sudeikis' judge character. In addition, Bobby Moynihan did a very good job portraying the confused defendant who was constantly bewildered by all the confusion surrounding him. Even Aidy Bryant gave a good performance as the plaintiff as well. Finally, Charlie Day's surprise cameo appearance was the icing on the cake; as it was hilarious as well as great to see him, Foxx, and Sudeikis reunite after starring in “Horrible Bosses” together last year. The whole sketch strongly hinted that Jason Sudeikis might be leaving the late-night sketch comedy show soon. When he does depart, there will be a significant void present. Jason Sudeikis is a great sketch comedy actor and he was always able to save weak sketches through his energetic and humorous performance. I'm really going to miss him when he eventually leaves.

Crystals: This went on a bit too long to be considered as a memorable closing sketch. Vanessa Bayer and Cecily Strong gave good performances; but unfortunately, the writing wasn't very sharp. Wat's more, aside from a few amusing lines, Jamie Foxx didn't contribute a lot to the sketch. Simply put, this was a lackluster way to end the show.

Ne-Yo: Both of the rapper's songs weren't very engaging or memorable. In fact, they both went on a bit too long. Aside from F.U.N. And Mumford and Sons, this season's musical guests haven't been great. And I'm not entirely enthusiastic about Paul McCartney performing next week. His last appearance in 2010 was slightly forgettable and he didn't possess a lot of genuine enthusiasm during his performances. Hopefully, he does better this time.

And that's my review. I wouldn't mind seeing Jamie Foxx host again. But, I hope that he tones down his attitude next time he hosts and that he is given better writing. I am looking forward to seeing Martin Short host next week. SNL usually goes all out for its Christmas shows; as we saw last year with Jimmy Fallon's great show. Martin Short is a very comical performer and I'm sure he'll be a great host as well.

Thank you all for your patience. Have a good night and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment!

My Review of Tonight's Show will be Up by Tomorrow night

My computer froze while I was typing my review and I lost it all.  It will be available for you to read by tomorrow night.  I apologize for the inconvenience and I thank you all for following my blog.  Have a good night and stay tuned for my review.

This has been a weak show tonight

That was a weak sketch

This bit is going too long

Jamie Foxx isn't adding a lot to this sketch

If this is the last sketch of the night, it isn't a very funny or memorable one

This isn't very funny so far

We are back!

Commercials are coming up now

This song isn't that enticing to me.

Ne-Yo hasn't been a very memorable musical guest tonight

We are back with Ne-Yo

Ne-Yo is coming up again

Commercials

This is a good sketch!!! SNL must be preparing for Jason Sudeikis in case he's leaving soon!

Bobby Moynihan is giving a good performance as the straight man

Charlie Day!!!! "Horrible Bosses" reunion!!!!  This is great!!!

The writing isn't very strong

But, Jason Sudeikis is giving a very enthusiastic performance.

A courtroom sketch

Good to see Jason Sudeikis as the judge.

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

This short film wasn't great at all

This is another instance tonight where bad language is being one of the main components of the sketch's comedy

Kenan Thompson is giving an OK performance, but the writing isn't very funny at all.

That wasn't a bad sketch. A little predictable but still humorous

Good to see a short film.  It isn't very funny so far though

This is a very repetitive sketch

However, in all honesty, I am laughing.  The dialogue is humorous

This is kind of a silly sketch

But I am chuckling a little due to the performances.

Another Game show sketch?

OK.

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

The commentaries of this "Weekend Update" installment weren't very funny at all

Aidy Bryant and Jamie Foxx gave good performances, but they were given weak material.

Seth Meyers, however, had quite a few funny jokes tonight.  I particularly liked his jokes about Twitter, Hanuka, and Anderson Cooper.

That segment ran a little too long

The writing for this segment is very silly

Jamie Foxx is giving a decent performance though

Seth Meyers' jokes haven't been all that bad

Good to see Jamie Foxx on Update.

Aidy Bryant was given weak material for her segment. At least she's getting screentime

The segment is relying on crude humor to get laughs

A common crutch used by the writers of SNL

Aidy Bryant is giving a good performance as Ms. Claus

The writing is a little weak though

That was a good Anderson Cooper joke

That was a good twitter joke by Seth Meyers

"Weekend Update" is on now

This isn't a very memorable show so far tonight

That wasn't terrific

Commercials are on now

This isn't an amazing musical performance

Most of this season's musical guests haven't been great at all.

I've heard this song before on VH-1

It's an alright song, but not entirely memorable.  Ne-You sounds a little bit like Usher.  He doesn't have a very unique voice.

We are back with Ne-Yo

Ne-Yo's first musical performance is coming up

That wasn't entirely great

Commercials are on now.  This is a VERY WEAK show so far.  I'm not sure if it's going to improve that much.

The writing is pretty weak though.

Jamie Foxx is giving a good performance, however.

A parody of "Alex Cross" with Jamie Foxx in the titular role

His Madea impression is decent.  It is a creative idea for a pre-recorded sketch.

That was another very bad sketch

2 bad sketches in a row.  Not a good sign at all.

I'm surprised that Jamie Foxx is doing this sketch.

They are basically using the joke of fake Japanese words for most of the sketch's jokes.  Not funny at all.

Taran Killam and Vanessa Bayer are giving enthusastic performances

But the writing isn't great.

These sketches aren't very funny

It's practically the same thing every time.  Jason Sudeikis is the funniest part of this sketch as the professor.

J-Pop America Fun Time Now

This was a reoccurring sketch from last season.

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

That was a TERRIBLE sketch

Martin Short is going to be  a GREAT host.

This isn't very funny at all.

Jamie Foxx has a lot of energy tonight

I just don't like the idea of using curse words as one of the main jokes of the sketch

I have a bad feeling about this sketch already

I DO NOT find the title humorous at all

We are back!

NOW the next sketch is coming up

Oops. I posted that a bit too quickly

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials

This isn't even a great song.

Not that great of a monologue

Now's going to play piano and perform a song

Another musical monologue.  Only two this season haven't been musical monologues.  They are overusing this concept.

His comedy is okay but nothing that amazing

Good to see him do a little bit of stand-up for the monologue

He seems very excited tonight

Hard to believe his last hosting stint was in 2000

I hope Jamie Foxx gets good sketches tonight

I haven't really listened to a lot of Ne-Yo's music

I REALLY hope tonight's show is god

Not a terrible opening

It was a little better than a couple of the openings so far this season

Bill Hader's great as always

I love the expression on Bill Hader's face

Both are giving good performances

Bill Hader is good as always

And I still like Jay Pharoah's impression of President Obama

The writing isn't bad so far

Good to see Jay Phroah as President Barack Obama

Also nice to see Bill Hader as John Bheoner again

Fiscal Cliff cold opening

And We are Live....NOW!!!!!

It's Getting to That Time

A "That's Nater-Tainment" Special Report: Jamie Foxx Hosts "Saturday Night Live" Tonight!

Tonight, NBC's “Saturday Night Live” returns from its two-week hiatus with an all-new episode hosted by Academy Award Winner Jamie Foxx. Joining Foxx tonight as the show's musical guest is Rapper Ne-Yo; who will be appearing on the show for the first time.

Jamie Foxx is hosting the show for his second time; his first actually being the first show if 2000. Jamie Foxx is a very good actor; winning the Academy Award in 2005 for his strong performance as the legendary singer Ray Charles. Foxx is also a comedic performer; having joined the cast of “In Living Color” in its third season. Jamie Foxx has also appeared in comedic films as well; his most recent was last year's “Horrible Bosses”- which starred current “Saturday Night Live” Castmember Jason Sudeikis.

Tonight, Jamie Foxx is hosting to promote his next film “Django Unchained”; which opens Christmas Day. In the movie, which is directed by Quentin Tarentino, Foxx portrays the titular character Django; a slave that that becomes a bounty hunter who sets out to rescue his wife, played by Kerry Washington, from a plantation owner; played by Leonardo Dicaprio. Foxx will also be starring in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” as Electro; one of the superhero's enemies that has the power to harness great amounts of electricity. The sequel to this year's blockbuster is open in 2014.

I truly hope that tonight's episode of “Saturday Night Live” is good; as there hasn't been an entirely great show yet this season. The cast, writers, and crew of the long-running sketch comedy show had a few weeks off, and hopefully they are ready to put on a memorable show.

And, to start the night off right, I am going to post some possible sketches and occurrences that could take place tonight. So, without further ado, I now present to you:

Some Predictions for “Saturday Night Live” Season Thirty-Eight: Episode Nine- Jamie Foxx / Ne-Yo

  1. Since he is also a known stand-up comic, I wouldn't be surprised if Jamie Foxx gets to do a comedy set for his monologue. Since most of this season's monologues have been musical in nature, it would be nice to see some good stand-up for a change. The only host that got the opportunity to do a stand-up monologue was Louis C.K. When he hosted on November 3rd. Thus, it would be nice to see something different tonight. However, this comes to my next point.
  2. Since Jamie Foxx also has an established musical career, I wouldn't actually be surprised if he gets to do a musical monologue as well. I wouldn't mind seeing a musical monologue tonight; but I would like to see Jamie Foxx get the opportunity to do some stand-up comedy tonight.
  3. Seeing as Jamie Foxx won the Academy Award for his performance as Ray Charles in 2005's “Ray,” I wouldn't be surprised to see the actor reprise his portrayal tonight.

And finally,

    1. Seeing as Jamie Foxx has established himself as recording artist, having released four albums, his most recent was 2010's “Best Night of My Life,” I would not be surprised if he gets the opportunity to perform with Ne-Yo at some point during the night. The whole performance would get a lot of positive feedback from the audience. So henceforth, I wouldn't be surprised to see Foxx perform with the show's musical guest.

So those are my predictions. Nevertheless, throughout the show, I will be commenting on the performances of Jamie Foxx, the “Saturday Night Live” cast as well as Ne-Yo. I will also be commenting the writing of the sketches as well as whether or not Foxx has good comedic chemistry with the cast. And following the show, I will be posting a review that outlines my opinions in greater detail. Needless to say, I am going to be VERY busy tonight.

So be sure to have your televisions set to NBC by 11:30pm and have my blog on your computers. Be sure to keep refreshing your computer screens throughout the telecast so you can see my latest comments. Feel free to post your own opinions by clicking the “comment” link underneath my posts. Your feedback means a lot and I look forward to hearing your opinions. So stay tuned and I'll see you at 11:30pm!

2.  A mid-season review of the final season of "The Office."  I've been concentrating on how the ninth season has been shaping up, and I have A LOT to say.  By the end of next week, I will be posting my overall thoughts on the storylines that have been brought forward as well as my opinions on the characters; which will be quite detailed.  This will be a very critical piece and I'm excited to post this for your reading enjoyment.

3.  My Top Ten Movies of 2012.  Before the month ends, I plan on listing my ten favorite films of the year.  I will be sharing my thoughts on my most preferred comedies, dramas, and action films that have graced theater screens these past months.  I'm very excited about this and I hope to end 2012 on a high note.

So that's what I have planned for this month.  Be sure to keep checking my blog for these writings.  I'm planning on ending the year with a bang; so don't miss a minute.  Thank you all for your support and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment!

That wasn't an entirely bad show

Sure it had its share of weak sketches.  But in the end, there ended up being some good segments after all.  Jeremy Renner did alright with what he was given; though he appeared tense at the start of the show.

The opening sketch wasn't very funny.  Featured Player Cecily Strong gave an alright performance but she wasn't given anything to do; other than just reading in a straightforward manner.  I did get a small laugh out of the audience members leaving as she continued reading.  In addition, Fred Armisen's excited expression towards the end of the sketch made me laugh .  This wasn't a great way of opening the show, however, and I wish that they came up with something a little better.

Jeremy Renner's monologue wasn't very memorable.  He appeared tense during the monologue and he seemed to hurry through the first few minutes.  He seemed a little more relaxed during the musical portion of the monologue; but the material he was given wasn't very funny. He did have a good singing voice; though I wish he was given more humorous songs. Overall, the monologue wasn't terrible; but I feel that Jeremy Renner could've had better material.

I haven't got anything to say about The Californians.  The sketch follows the same format everytime and it features the same gags as always:  funny voices, giving directions in a goofy manner, exaggerated facial expressions, and everyone looking into the mirror at the same time.  Jeremy Renner didn't contribute anything special to the sketch and I feel that it was slightly rushed as well.  Not a good sketch at all.

The short film was  amusing.  I liked the idea of the gun stand-off getting more and more exaggerated as it went on.  Everyone did well with their performances and I thought that Adam Levine's cameo wasn't bad.

The Situation Room parody could have been funnier,  Jason Sudeikis gave a good impression of Wolf Blitzer; though I feel that he wasn't given anything special.  Jeremy Renner gave a generic performance in this sketch and the ending wasn't great.   This wasn't very memorable and I feel they could have done a better job mocking the
Patreaus Scandal.

"Weekend Update" wasn't terrible tonight.  Seth Meyers had a few good jokes.  His best was his jokes aimed at Florida during the "Winners and Losers" bit.  Jay Pharoah did a very good job impersonating Katt Williams.  He had the comedian's voice down pact and he did have a some good lines.  I was also surprised that SNL got New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to appear and I liked his segment.  He was a good spot and he gave an enthusiastic performance.  Overall, not a bad edition of "Weekend Update."

The Avengers parody was creative and very amusing,  I liked seeing all the castmembers portray the superheroes; especially Jason Sudeikis as Tony Stark and Bill Hader as Thor.  I also liked Kate McKinnon's clever portrayal of Scarlett Johanson's Black Widow and I must comment the make-up and costume department for their work.  Bobby Moynihan's Hulk make-up and costume had a lot of detail and everyone else resembled their respective characters quite well.  I though Jeremy Renner gave a good performance and he was a good sport in poking fun at his own character Hawkeye.  This was a fun sketch and everyone played their part well.

The film shoot sketch was also good; though it seemed a bit rushed.  Jason Sudeikis gave a good performance as usual when portraying his actor-character and he had great interactions with Bill Hader's character.  The two performers are always great together and their performances show just how important they are to the show.  Jeremy Renner hardly had anything to do in this sketch; as he didn't get to contribute anything funny.  The ending of the sketch seemed a little abrupt and I feel that the writers could have come up with a better one.  Not a bad sketch.

The cartoon seemed pointless.  The idea of military drones being performing R & B songs when they are not fighting villains wasn't funny and the whole short film just seemed too silly for my taste.  This short cartoon was basically used as filler material and nothing more.  Just a waste of time.

The morgue sketch actually ended up being quite amusing.  Jason Sudeikis and Jeremy Renner were funny together and they had very good interactions.  Bill Hader sporadically interjecting comments was very funny as well and the sketch had a nice flow to it.  The ending of the sketch was a clever twist and I laughed throughout the segment.  This was a good way to end the night.

This wasn't a bad show after all.  Though we had some duds, like the cold opening, the Californians, the cartoon, and parts of The Situation Room, we did get some good sketches.  The Avengers parody, morgue sketch, the short film, and the film shoot sketch all possessed a good amount of humor.  Jeremy Renner wasn't the best host of the season; though he did what he could.  He appeared nervous during the first few minutes of the monologue and he hardly contributed anything great to quite a few sketches.  I'm not sure if he'll host again in the near future; but if he does, perhaps he'll do a little better.

As for Maroon 5, they weren't terrible.  Their first performance lacked genuine enthusiasm and they just muddled through their song.  Their second performance, however, was a little better as they seemed to possess more energy.  I guess I'm just a little tired of Maroon 5; as their music is constantly played on the radio and VH-1. In addition, Adam Levine is just about everywhere nowadays; thus I feel that he is overexposed-- thanks in large part to "The Voice."

So that's the show and my review.  Thank you all for following me tonight and I look forward to live-blogging Jamie Foxx's show on December 8th.

Thank you all once again and good night.

This actually ended up being not a terrible bad show after all

That was an unexpected twist. Not terrible at all

I like the idea that SNL is doing edgier sketches this season

Jason Sudeikis and Jeremy Renner are interacting well together.  And Bill Hader is good too.

We are back

A sketch about identifying bodies. They better be careful with this

Commercials

So this sketch is about R &B singing military drones.

I see.  This isn't very funny.

We are back with a short animated film

They haven't done animated shorts in a while.

This is kind of silly however.

Commercials are on now

Maroon 5's performance here is even a little bit better than their first one

This isn't a bad song

This song is actually better than their first.

This must be a new song. I haven't heard it before

We are back with Maroon 5

Maroon 5 is coming up soon

commercials

JasVery good sketch. Jason Sudeikis is good as always.

Jason Sudeikis is giving a good performance

and Bill Hader is a good straightman.  I feel like Jeremy Renner isn't getting much to do though

we are back

Jason Sudeikis is funny as his character so far

sketch should be coming up

That was a good and creative sketch

Everyone gave good performances and Jeremy Renner was a good sport poking fun at his character

An Avengers sketch!!

Jay Pharoah's Sam Jackson impression isn't bad.  The make-up department did a great job with the costumes.

I like th joke about Hawkeye not being able to do much.

Kate McKinnon does a good impression of Scarlett Johansson

And I love Sudeikis' portrayal of Tony Stark

"Weekend Update" wasn't terrible tonight

Jay Pharoah was humorous and SNL got Chris Christie to show up!!!

WOW!! I'm really amazed they got the real Chris Christie!

He was a good sport and the material wasn't bad!

Seth Meyers' jokes are alright tonight.

Jay Pharoah is doing a good job

He has Katt Williams' voice down pact

Jay Pharoah does a good Katt Williams impression

Seth Meyers' Florida jokes were funny though

These are ok jokes so far; but not great

These aren't great jokes so far

Also, didn't Seth Meyers already do "Winners and Losers" earlier this season?

Time for "Weekend Update"

"Weekend Update" is coming up

Commercials

This performance is alright, but they don't have a lot of energy or enthusiasm

Because of "The Voice" and Maroon 5, I feel that Adam Levine has become WAY overexposed

This song is alright.

I'm getting a little tired of Maroon 5

They have been on SNL four times now.  But it feels like their tenth time on the show.

Maroon 5 is on now

Maroon 5's first performance is coming up

Commercials

This short was the best part of the night so far

This is something I could see Andy Samberg so

Adam Levine's cameo was sort of funny

This short film is basically spoofing intense films

This is actually a,using

That was alright

I feel like Renner isn't going to be given a lot of funny stuff tonight

Jeremy Renner is alright so far

But he isn't being given anything funny to do

This sketch is alright so far

Good to see Jason Sudeikis' Wolf Blitzer impression again

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Jamie Foxx is going to host?????

He hasn't hosted since 2000.  Good to see him back

That wasn't funny

This is just terrible

Jeremy Renner's doing alright with the weak material.

But the sketch isn't funny at all!!!!

The audience isn't even laughing very much!!!!

They do the same thing all the time

Silly voices and giving directions to different locations!!!  I get the joke already!!!!

I am OFFICIALLY tired of this sketch!!!!

The Californians???!!!

Again?   They just did this sketch when Applegate hosted.

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Commercial break

This isn't a very funny commercial parody

"The Final Countdown" by Europe

That was kind of dull.

This wasn't a very memorable monologue.

He's paryoding Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody"

It's kind of humorous.

These songs aren't very funny

Jeremy Renner is actually a good singer

They have done a lot of musical monologues so far this season

That's a good joke about his movies

I hope Jeremy Renner is a funny host

Maroon 5 is appearing on the show for the fourth time

I REALLY hope tonight's show is good

That wasn't a great opening

I like the idea of audience members getting up and leaving as she reads

This is kind of a low-key opening

I was hoping for something funnier

The writers are basically using sexual humor for cheap laughs

This isn't very funny

Good to see Featured Player Cicly Strong get some airtime

Cold Opening about General Petraeus

And We Are Live....NOW!!!

That's the show. Boy was this a weak show tonight!

Anne Hathaway did the best she could.  But unfortunately, the writing wasn't entirely there tonight.

The show's cold opening featured a good performance from Jason Sudeikis.  His impression of Mitt Romney was very good as always. Kate McKinnon was also good as Ann Romney and Taran Killam was amusing alright as Tagg Romney.  Though the writing wasn't great, I did like the joke that all of Mitt Romney's sons look alike.  Bobby Moynihan's impression of Karl Rove was weak and the overall the quality of the writing wasn't very hilarious.  I have to say, however, the ending was very sweet with Sudeikis' Mitt Romney and Kate McKinnon's Ann Romney.  Not an entirely great opening but alright.

Anne Hathaway's monologue was very entertaining and it featured good performances from all the castmembers.  Various jokes were great; such as the featured players saying that they wouldn't be in the show that much because they're new.  I figured that they would do a musical monologue tonight; considering that Anne Hathaway is starring in the film version of "Les Miserables."  This was a fun monologue and it was great seeing the entire SNL cast on stage at once.

The Girlfriend Talk Show sketch featured good performances from Nasim Pedrad, Aidy Bryant, and Anne Hathaway.  Unfortunately, the writing wasn't great at all and there was practically nothing there that was funny.  Just a very weak sketch.

The digital short was quite funny; but it was very strange.  Taran Killam gave a good performance and Anne Hathaway was funny as well.  Kenan Thompson's singing blended in well with the bizarre nature of the sketch and I liked seeing Killam get such a prominent role in a pre-recorded short film. I will say that there were parts of that were slightly over-the-top and the ending was abrupt.  However, the whole short film reminded me of similar short pieces that Andy Samberg had done on the show when he was a castmember.  I truly think that SNL has found first big viral hit since Samberg left this past May.

The Showtime parody was pretty funny and featured good performances from Anne Hathaway, Taran Killam, and the other performers. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the show that was being spoofed; but I read on a website that it was a spoof of Showtime's hit series "Homeland."  I haven't seen the show before so; so, unfortunately, I didn't get a lot of the jokes.  The performances were good and it was a nicely-paced sketch overall.

The McDonald's sketch wasn't funny at all! Bobby Moynihan's and Cecily Strong's performances were completely over-the-top and the writing wasn't hilarious.  The joke of the two characters insulting their fellow employees grew tiring after a while and the sketch just seemed written as a way to fill airtime.  The ending wasn't funny and I found myself more irritated than amused.  I could actually see Moynihan's and Strong's characters being repeated during a future show.

"Weekend Update" was very weak tonight.  Seth Meyers seemed to be rushing through all his jokes and not one of them were funny.  Jay Pharoah's impression of President Obama was good again; unfortunately, the material wasn't funny at all.  I do not like jokes about Rape; and I found that portion of his segment to be very unfunny and very distasteful. Fred Armisen's and Bill Hader's "2 Gay Guys from Maine"-bit was basically a rehash of previous times the two performers executed similar routines.  Their performances were alright; though the writing was very weak.  I have nothing to say about Bobby Moynihan's "Drunk Uncle" character.  His whole segment wasn't hilarious AT ALL and it went on for too long.  I don't know why Bobby Moynihan's character is such a hit with the audience; seeing as the segment isn't very funny and his performance is borderline irritating.  Just a very bad and very long edition of "Weekend Update" this week.

The "Ellen DeGenerous" parody featured a very good impression of the comedienne from Kate McKinnon.  Unfortunately, the sketch didn't really go anywhere and the joke of DeGenerous dancing a lot grew old fast.  Anne Hathaway did a good job with her Katie Holmes impression; but she hardly got to do anything.  This was a weak sketch.

The American Gothic sketch was GREAT!!!  Though my computer froze briefly, I was still able to watch it.  It was a very creative sketch and Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis were hilarious together.  They possessed great chemistry and exhibited hilarious performances.  I loved the pair going through the different poses for the protrait of the iconic painting.  Though the sketch did run just a tad long, Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis were both hilarious and the ending was very funny!   Very creative and enjoyable sketch.

Closing the show with a pre-recorded commercial spoof was just weak.   It was a good parody of cold medication advertisements and all the performances were good.  Though I wish the show closed with an actual sketch.

And that's the show.  Aside from a few pieces, this was a weak show.  Anne Hathaway really didn't have a lot to work with and I feel that she was wasted in some of the sketches.  However, she gave good performances in every sketch; as did Jason Sudeikis and Taran Killam-- the latter of whom dominated the whole night as he appeared almost every segment.  He must be getting groomed to be the new male lead once Jason Sudeikis leaves.

As for Rhianna, I have nothing to say.  Both of her performances were very forgettable and her overall singing was very bland.  I have no idea why she keeps appearing as the musical guest; but she's now appeared on the show for four seasons in a row.  I guess we can expect her to appear next season as well.

Thus, that's it.  This was a very weak show and I have no idea why the writing was subpar.  Usually, after an election the writers have a lot to work with.  But unfortunately, I feel that the writers weren't at the top of their game this week.  Anne Hathaway is very good comedic performer whenever she hosts SNL; but the writers practically let her down this time.  Hopefully she gets better material the next time she hosts.

That's my review.  Thank you for following my blog and I wish you all a good night!

Commercials again

This hasn't been a very great show tonight.

we are back

This commercial parody is creative.  Good spoof of cold medication advertisements.

That wasn't very amazing

And now...commercials

This is a weak performance just like her first

Rhiana isn't a very remarkable musician.  This song is very forgettable.

Rhiana is up again

Rhiana's second performance should be coming up next

commercials

Sorry for the delay. My computer froze temporarily

I really liked the American Gothic sketch.  Jason Sudeikis and Anne Hathanway were hilarious and they had a great chemistry.  Though it did run a bit long, it was very funny and the ening was hilarious!

next sketch should be coming up soon

That wasn't a a great sketch at all

Weak writing, but good performances from Kate McKinnon and Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway does a funny portrayal of Katie Holmes

I'm suprised SNL hasn't done a parody of Ellen until now

Is the basic joke in this sketch the fact that Ellen DeGenerous dances a lot?

Tha

we are back

With a parody of Ellen DeGenerous.

Good to see Kate McKinnon star

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials

This is just plain BAD!!!!

This has been a very weak installment of "Weekend Update"

Weak writing throughout it all

This bit isn't funny at all

I'm very tired of Bobby Moynihan's Drunk Uncle character

He basically does the same thing everytime he plays this character. This bit is only done to fill up time on "Weekend Update"

These aren't very funny jokes at all

Nothing very special about this segment at all

Bill Hader and Fred Armisen have played variations of these characters many times before

This bit is just a rehash of previous bits

Seth Meyers' jokes are very weak tonight

He hasn't made me laugh once

Pharoah's performance is good

Though I'm not crazy about any jokes about rape however.  That's a very sensitive subject and it's not funny at all

Pharoah has the voice down

He does a good job with his mannerisms as well.  The writing isn't great though

Good to see Jay Pharoah's impression of President Obama

Seth Meyers seems to be rushing through the jokes tonight

Weak first joke

"Weekend Update"

"Weekend Update" is coming up next

commercials

Rhiana's performance here is just tedious

She has no genuine energy and this song is bland

I guess that Rhiana is going to be on every season

I'm not Rhiana's biggest fan

I'm already not crazy about this performance

We are back with Rhiana

Rhiana is coming up

Commercials

That wasn't great at all

I predict that these characters are going to be back again in another sketch

That was awkward

This sketch isn't very funny

Cecily Strong's and Bobby Moynihan's performances are a little over-the-top

And Taran Killam is in ANOTHER sketch tonight.  He's been in everything so far!!  Good for him

This looks like it could be an interesting sketcj

NOW we are back

Oops. I published that post too early

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials

That wasn't a bad sketch

Good performances by all

The performances in this sketch are very good

Though the writing isn't particularly great

Anne Hathaway is good whenever she's on SNL

I wish that Bill Hader would get more to do in this sketch

Taran Killam is getting a lot of screentime tonight

This is just downright strange

Weak ending

I like the fact that they are still doing short films

This is a really silly skit.  Kind of reminds me of something Andy Samberg would have done on the show

This is an alright sketch

But like I said before it's not hilarious.

That was a rushed ending

The performances are good

This sketch isn't hilarious though.  Aidy Bryant has had a few good lines however.

Also good to see Featured Player Cecily Strong starring in a sketch as well

This looks like it could be a new reoccurring sketch

A new original sketch

Good to see Featured Player Aidy Bryant starring in a sketch

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

commercials

Very entertaining monologue

I liked the joke about the new performers

Jason Sudeikis is a very good performer

All the castmembers of SNL are good singers.  I had a feeling they would do  a musical monologue tonight

This is her third time hosting

good for her

I hope Anne Hathaway gets good sketches tonight

I'm not a totally big fan of Rhianna

She's been on SNL four seasons in a row

I hope tonight's show is good

That was a sweet ending

Not a terrible opening.

Jason Sudeikis is always good

Bobby Moynihan does a weak impression of Karl Rove

Taran Killam as Tagg Romney

The writing is alright so far.

The Idea of Mitt Romney's sons all looking alike is amusing

I'm happy to see Kate McKinnon as Ann Romney as well

Great to see Jason Sudeikis as Mitt Romney again

All in all, That Wasn't a Bad Show. It was OK

Louis CK was a good host and did the best he could with the material he was given.

The opening wasn't great at all.  It seemed as if that main joke was supposed to be the hand gesturing by the translators.  With the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, I was hoping for a more serious opening.  Maybe Mayor Michael Bloomberg could have made a guest appearance and talk about how New York City residents, New Jersey residents, and all people who live along the East Coast will overcome the effects the storm together.  Instead, we get a forgettable opening with Fred Armisen's weak impression of Mayor Bloomberg and Bobby Moynihan's brash portrayal of Governor Christie.  The opening wasn't terrible, but I wish for something more profound.

Louis CK's monologue was alright; but I think it could have been funnier.  I liked his jokes about the void of electricity; though  I do not find the idea of old women falling to be funny; though I do feel that Louis CK made me laugh towards the end of the monologue.  He gave a good performance; though I wish his routine wasn't entirely funny.

The "FOX and Friends" parody wasn't bad at all.  Vanessa Bayer, Taran Killam, and Bobby Moynihan gave very good performances and the writing was pretty funny.  Jason Sudeikis' Donald Trump impression was funny; though I did find myself slightly missing Darrell Hammond's portrayal of the public figure.  Louis CK played a good straightman and he interacted very well with the sketch,  I wish this sketch would forgo the usual ending of the segment for once; as I'm getting tired of the long list of mistakes that scrolls up quickly every time this bit takes place.  Nevertheless, this particular spoof of "FOX and Friends" was very well-performed and contained decent writing.  Though I wish that Louis CK got to do a bit more.

The "Lincoln" short film was great.  Now I've never seen an entire episode of "Louie," but I could tell from the opening credits sequence that it was a spoof of Louis CK's critically-acclaimed series.  The segment was very well-written and it contained jokes that were very edgy; moreso than the typical writing of "Saturday Night Live."  Louis CK was very funny throughout the filmed piece and I wonder if he wrote the whole segment.  It was a very creative piece and everyone in it bestowed great performances and lots of laughs.  Easily the best segment of the night.

The Australian Film Actors sketch was just an excuse for everyone to do Australian accents and partake in cheap humor.  Louis CK and Bill Hader gave the best performances in the sketch and Vanessa Bayer was alright too.  Fred Armisen was alright as the host; but the material wasn't great.  Louis CK does a good Australian accent and he looked like he was enjoying himself.  Not a great sketch in terms of the writing.

"Weekend Update" this week wasn't terrible.  Seth Meyers had some good jokes about power returning to NYC and he had a few more good quips throughout.  Jason Sudeikis' impression of Mitt Romney was great as always; and he interacted well with Seth Meyers- just as he does as always.  Featured Players Aidy Bryant and Cecily strong gave good performances as their characters; despite the fact that the material wasn't amazing.  I was happy to see Aidy Bryant finally get a major role and I hope she gets to do more as the season progresses.  Not a bad installment of "Weekend Update."

I have nothing to say about the mountain pass sketch.  The whole horn concept became tiring after the segment's first couple of minutes.  The sketch didn't go anywhere and it seemed as though the writers just penned the sketch in an attempt to fill time.  The performances from Louis CK and the cast were fine; but alas, they had nothing to work with.  The punchline at the end of the sketch wasn't funny and it appeared tacked on.  Just a very forgettable sketch.

The hotel sketch wasn't bad and Louis CK interacted very well with Bobby Moynihan.  The constant listing of all the charges got a tad tiring; but Louis CK's delivery made me laugh.  It was good to see a simple sketch that didn't rely on many gimmicks and it properly utilized the two-person format to fit the designated runtime.  The sketch ended at the right time and I did chuckle at the sight of the two performers smirking.  Not a terrible sketch overall.  With only a few kinks here and there, this was probably up with the "FOX and Friends" spoof and the "Lincoln" short film as the best parts of the night.

The bar sketch at the end of the show wasn't bad either; though it did go on a bit too long.  Louis CK and Kate McKinnon possessed great chemistry and they each had good lines.  Though I will say the piece was very predictable and the whole make-out sequence seemed to only be there to get a wild reaction from the audience.  This wasn't a terrible sketch; though I wish it was bit shorter and a little more unpredictable.

And that's the show.  Louis CK did well with the material he was given and he had good chemistry with the cast.  I was happy to see the show strongly cut back on reoccurring segments; as "FOX and Friends" proved to be the only segment that had already been previously executed.  Not all of the show's writing was great tonight; but I do feel that everyone made an effort tonight to make the audience and viewers at home laugh.

fun. proved to be an enjoyable musical guest.  They have a good sound as well as a lot of energy.  I was happy to hear the band play their hit song "Some Nights" and their second song was enjoyable too.

While this wasn't an entirely great episode, I did laugh at different points.  Tonight's episode was much better than the ones hosted by Christina Applegate and Bruno Mars.  I would like to see Louis CK host again.  And hopefully, the next time he's on, the writing will be slightly better.

That's my review.  Thank you all for following me and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment.  Good night everybody!

show's over

The show is almost over

GREAT performances by Louis CK and Kate McKinnon

PDA ALERT!!!!

They have very good chemistry.

we are back

I have a feeling that this will be a reoccurring character for Kate McKinnon.

Louis CK and McKinnon are giving good performances and the writing isn;t terrible.

Very good performance by fun.

And now...commercials

This song has a good sound

fun is a very good musical guest.  Their music is easy to get into.

I haven't heard this song from fun before

This must be a new single from them.  Sounds good though.

We are back with fun.

musical performance is coming up

This sketch isn't great.

However, the performances are good and I did get a few chuckles towards the end of the sketch.

This looks like it could be a good premise-based sketch

Louis CK is giving a good performance so far.    As is Bobby Moynihan.  Though I think that the basic joke of this sketch is the listing of all the charages to Moynihan's character.

Not a lot going on here.

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials

This isn't funny at all

That was downright pointless and didn't go anywhere.

In other words:  not uncommon for a SNL sketch nowadays

Bill Hader is very funny as always.

Though I feel that this sketch is kind of ridiculous.

Louis CK is giving a good performance

I have no idea what's going on.  Are they using the sound of the ram horn as the basis of the joke?

This looks like an interesting sketch

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Not a terrible installment of "Weekend Update"

Seth Meyers had some good jokes; and Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong both got to debut new characters tonight.  Their performances greatly improved the quality of their segment; as the writing wasn't great.

Jason Sudeikis was great as always and he was given decent writing.

The writing in this segment isn't great

But Cecily Strong is giving a good performance.

Good to see Featured Player Cecily Strong get some more screentime

They are giving the new female castmembers a lot to do.  That's very good; seeing as they, as well as the other women in the cast, need a lot of time to shine.

Bryant is giving a good performance

Though the writing isn't very stellar.  She's making the best of it though

Good to see Featured Player Aidy Bryant play a character on update

She hasn't had a lot of screen time so far this season.

Seth Meyers' jokes aren't terrible tonight

Sudeikis' performance was great and the writing wasn't terrible

Sudeikis is always great

You can always count on him to give a good performance and bestow a great amount of humor

Good to see Jason Sudeikis' impression of Mitt Romney

Good joke about NYC subways.

That rat joke was kind of silly

Good Ipad joke

"Weekend Update" is now on

fun is a good band. They have a good amount of energy as well as a good sound.

And now we have commercials.

This is a good performance

This band has a lot of energy.

I like this song by fun.

They have a good sound.

Musical performance is coming up

Louis Ck wasn't given a lot to do in that sketch

That sketch paled in comparison to that Louis / Lincoln short film; which was very creative and well-written.

The performances were good; but the writing was very weak

This isn't very funny

Louis CK does a good Australian accent.  Too bad the writing isn't great

I don't like juvenile humor like that

A sketch about Australian actors

We are back

Commercial Break

This is a creative idea for a sketch

I wonder if Louis CK had any hand in writing this?  This is a bit too edgy for the SNL writers to create.

Nice to see Saturday Night Live continue to do short films

This is a parody of Louis CK's television show.

They end these sketches the same way every time

I have a feeling that Louis CK is going to be playing a lot of straightmen tonight

Louis CK is doing a good job with this sketch so far

The writing isn't bad either

The performances in this sketch are good

I liked Jason Sudeikis' impression of Donald Trump.  He did a good job with the voice.

FOX and Friends spoof

We are back

FOX News sketch is coming up

Commercials already?

That was very quick

Now his monologue got a bit dirty.

The monologue is getting better now.

Louis CK has a very good stage presence.

This is a good monologue so far

Always good to see a stand-up monologue.  I don't like jokes about old women falling though.

I hope they give Louis CK good skits tonight

I hope tonight's show is good

Not a very funny opening sketch

I don't find that to be funny

I wish that the opening of this sketch would be a bit more serious

They are basically finding humor in the concept of sign language

I'm not very crazy about Fred Armisen's impression of Mayor Bloomberg

And we are Live...NOW!!!!!

It's Almost That Time

Tonight, I will be live-blogging this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live;" which will be hosted by Actor-Comedian Louis CK.   Beginning at 11:30pm, I will be commenting on the sketches as well as the performances Louis CK, the cast of "Saturday Night Night Live," and Musical guest fun.  I will also be opining on the show's writing as well as anything else that comes to mind.  And sometime after the show ends, I will post a review that outlines all my opinions of how everything went throughout the 90-minute duration.

In addition, I'm hoping that by tomorrow night, I will have a writing of some form available for you to read.  It's not going to be a long piece as I've hoped; as I've been preoccupied by some other matters for the past few days.   However, I promise that I will have something more detailed by the end of next week.

All in all, a weak show

This was quite a weak show.  I can honestly say, though, that Bruno Mars wasn't terrible.  True he sang a lot and he appeared slightly nervous at the start of the show, but his overall stage presence wasn't bad.

The opening debate sketch featured good performances from Jason Sudeikis, Jay Pharoah, Aidy Bryant, and the rest of the actresses and actors, but the writing wasn't very stellar.  Jason Sideikis and Jay Pharoah had good chemistry and I liked seeing how their protrayals of Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama respectfully grew incresingly angered as the sketch progressed.  Aidy Bryant did very well portraying the moderator and I'm glad to see the featured performer get good screentime.  I really wish that Tom Hanks had a much larger part; rather than just a quick cameo.  But his performance made me laugh.  Finally, it was nice to see Aidy Bryant open the show.  I'm hoping she gets more screentime as the season continues.

Bruno Mars' monologue was alright. Despite appearing nervous, Bruno Mars performed alright; though the self-deprecating comments and lyrics weren't very funny.  He did have a keen amount of energy, however, and his lyric about Justin Timberlake made me chuckle.  I also liked how he mentioned that he was aware of everyone judging him to see how good he would be as an actor; and that is basically a true fact-- seeing as he is not a professional actor.  All in all, Bruno Mars' performance, while not entirely amazing, was slightly better than I thought it would be.

The "Haters" talk show seemed to have no purpose; rather than just providing Bruno Mars the opportunity to dress up as a woman.  There wasn't any truly amazing performances in this sketch and it ended too quickly.  No one was hilarious in this sketch and it was basically a waste of time.

The Pandora sketch featured a simple premise as well as the opportunity for Bruno Mars to emulate the musical stylings of other recording artists.  I thought he did alright copying Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong's manner of singing and I will commend Mars on his decent impression of Michael Jackson.  Though the format of the sketch was very simple, Bruno Mars actually did okay as a whole.  The ending of the sketch, however, wasn't funny and appeared tacked on.

"Weekend Update" wasn't terrible.  Seth Meyers did the best he could with the weak material and he did have at least one or two slightly-amusing jokes.  I liked seeing Bill Hader play Stefon once again; though the writing wasn't very funny; causing him to not have a lot to work with.  Nevertheless, Hader gave a good performance as usual and he did make me laugh; thanks in large part to his enthusiastic delivery.

I liked seeing the Merryville animatronic characters again; and the Halloween spin on the reoccurring sketch was quite creative.  Taran Killam once again gave a good performance and I have to admit that Bruno Mars did an alright job with the body movements.  Jay Pharoah was very good as well as the excited passenger and Vanessa Bayer was funny as his terrified companion.  I also enjoyed seeing Tom Hanks make a surprise appearance as another animatronic character.  His body movements were very good and his brief dialogue with Vanessa Bayer was funny as well.  The sketch as a whole was quite creative and ended up being one of the episode's few bright spots.

The Yeti sketch started out good; with Bruno Mars showcasing some very funny facial reactions.  The sight of him wearing an eye patch was humorous and I liked how he interacted with Jason Sudeikis and Vanessa Bayer; both of whom were quite humorous as the skeptical visitors.  Bill Hader made me laugh as the old man; up until he brought up the cheap and crude sexual content.  What's more, though the yeti at the end was a creative inclusion, the over-the-top sexual humor wasn't  very funny at all.  Though I did like the image of Bill Hader's character walking off with the yeti as romantic music played.  If this sketch didn't have such inappropriate content, this could have been my favorite sketch of the night.  All the performances were good but I do not approve of the writers resorting to inappropriate humor to get laughs from the audience.

I don't have anything to say about the Underground Rock festival as towards the end of the show.  Though Jason Sudeikis and Nasim Padrad's performances were humorous, the foul language and shock humor left a bad taste in my mouth.  These sketches usually follow the same pattern; right up with Bobby Moynihan's character dying every time he appears in the sketch.  In addition, I don't feel that Bruno Mars contributed anything noteworthy to the sketch.  He didn't make me laugh at all and his presentation came off one-dimensional and forced.  A weak way of ending the night.

In all honesty, Bruno Mars wasn't terrible; though he wasn't great.  He interacted alright with the members of the cast; but I feel that he could have done a little bit better; particularly in any scenes where he interacted with Jason Sudeikis-- who always manages to make me laugh.  Bruno Mars did what he could with the material he was given; but unfortunately, he only made me laugh a couple times.

I do have to commend Castmembers Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Jay Pharoah, and Kate McKinnon on their performances tonight.  They all got great opportunities to showcase their comedic skills and they are very great performers.  Taran Killam was also good tonight; especially during the Merryvill Ride sketch.  I did like his Brad Pitt impression during the commercial parodies; but the sheer abundance of the segments caused them to lose their overall punch.  There only should have been two spoofs and we would have gotten the joke without the bits going into overkill.

So is Bruno Mars a gifted actor?   The answer is:  no.  But he did what he could; though he was mostly saddled with weak premises for most of the show; save for the yeti and Marryville sketches.  He came off as being wooden during most of the show; with his performance in the yeti sketch as possibly being his best.  I'm not sure if I would venture out to theaters to see Bruno Mars act in a movie.  He's just alright; not amazing.

As for his musical performances, Bruno Mars' songs don't have any unique sound.  Both of his songs weren't great and the music wasn't at all catchy.  His singing sounds the same whenever he croons a melody; causing his musical performances to be forgettable.  Simply put, I'm not a big fan of Bruno Mars.

And that concludes my live-blogging coverage.  Thank you all for following me and I look forward to posting my next big writing.  Good night everybody!

This isn't very funny.

They've done sketches like this before

These underground rock festival sketches basically follow the same format every time.  The performances are good but the material is kind of forced.

Short performance. Now commercials

This performance isn't particularly amazing

This particular song sounds like other songs I have heard from Bruno Mars.  Nothing special at all.

These Brad Pitt parodies have offically got old

And that was it?  Commercials?  That was too rushed.

I liked that Bill Hader introduced Bruno Mars' second performance as Stefon.

commercials

Next skatch is coming up

Now they bring in sexual humor into the mix. Why did they have to throw in shock humor like that?

This could have been good without the sex jokes.

Bruno Mars and Bill Hader made me laugh with their performances.

I don't like the shock humor that was going on in the background with the yeti.

Bill Hader walking off with the yeti while romantic music played was worth a chuckle or two.

Aside from the crude sex humor, that was a creative and amusing sketch.

This looks like it could be good

Bruno Mars is actually making me laugh.  His facial reactions are pretty humorous.  I like the sight of him wearing the eye patch.

Bill Hader is funny as the elderly man.

This is a creative idea for a sketch.

Next sketch is coming up

I like seeing Jay Pharoah get more screentime

That was a good twist.  Even though they've done that sketch before, the Halloween angle was a nice touch to keep the sketch fresh.  Good performances by all performers.  Even Bruno Mars

They brought the Merryville sketch

This sketch usually follows the same format every time.  Bruno Mars is doing a good job with the body movements.

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials

Bill Hader is great as always

His performance improves the quality of the segment.

Short "Weekend Update" tonight

The writing isn't great for this particular Stefon segment

Bill Hader's performance improves the quality though.

Bill Hader always gives a good performance as Stefon

Bill Hader as Stefon!!!

He usually does a Stefon segment around Halloween

These jokes aren't very hilarious. The material just isn't doing it for me

These jokes are alright. Not special but Seth Meyers is making the best of the weak material

"Weekend Update" is up now

Not so great jokes so far.

commercials are up now

"Weekend Update" will be next

Commercial Break

Typical performance by Bruno Mars

This performance is nothing special at all

Bruno Mars has sang a lot so far tonight

So much so that this performance doesn't stand out at all.

Nice to see Tom Hanks sticking around

Musical performance is coming up

Not a great show so far

That was an alright ending

Is this going to be a replacement for the digital shorts?  Little short films like that?  Wouldn't be a bad idea if they come up with some good material

I don't really understand the point of this pre-taped segment.

I just find this to be time filler.

Jason Sudeikis is doing a lot tonight

He's more funny than Bruno Mars.

This sketch is just depicting Bruno Mars' ability to sing

That was an awkward ending

I don't like this sketch very much.

Bruno Mars is now going to sing like Michael Jackson.

This isn;t a very hilarious sketch.

Ha. Bruno Mars is signing like Justin Bieber

This isn't funny at all.  Let me guess.  At the end of the sketch, he has to sing like Bruno Mars

Now Bruno Mars is singing in the style of Aerosmith

I don't find this sketch very funny.  It's just a way to get the audience screaming.

I'm not familar with Pandora.

Is the joke in this sketch basically going to be Bruno Mars singing in the style of other musicians?  Very simple premise that can get the audience to applaud easily.

What is going on in this sketch?

Next sketch

Next sketch is coming up

Louis CK. is going to host!!!!!

I never thought he would host SNL!  Wow!  Interesting host choice.

I like Tran Killam's impression of Brad Pitt

Featured Player Tim Robinson got a small role in the sketch

That sketch ended too quickly.  There basically wasn't anything there at all

Jay Pharoah gave me the first laugh of the sketch

Bruno Mars in a dress.

I saw that coming a mile away.  His performance so far is nothing special

New Talk Show sketch

Bobby Moynihan in a dress.  Cross-dressing for the sake of getting a cheap laugh

We are back

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials

Bruno Mars hasn't impressed me very much so far.

Taran Killam is spoofing Brad Pitt's Chanel ad

He does a good impression of the actor.  The writing isn't great but he performed well

Not very great at all

This monologue is going on too long.

This part of the monologue is dragging

His attempt at self-mockery is falling flat, in my opinion

I'm not the biggest fan of his singing

This is alright.  But I'm not laughing a lot.  I liked his Justin Timberlake comment though

Musical monologue. I called it

I'm predicting a musical monologue

Bruno Mars is on stage now

I have no idea how tonight's show will go

I hope it will be good

Good to see Aidy Bryant open the show

Not a terrible opening.  Wish that Tom Hanks got to do a little more.  Good performances all around.

Why doesn't Tom Hanks host SNL anymore?

He's always good whenever he's on the show

Tom Hanks!!!!!

I had a feeling there would be a surprise cameo during this sketch.

That was quick

Bobby Moynihan as the fourth audience member

I like how their spoofing the intensity of the second debate

Featured Player Kate McKinnon as the third audience member

The performances in this sketch are much better than the quality of the writing

Taran Killam as one of Mitt Romney's sons

The writing is alright. Not spectacular

Bill Hader as the second audience member.  He's good as always

Jason Sudeikis and Jay Pharoah interact quite well together

Fred Armisen plays the first audience member

PSpoof of the Debate

Good to see Featured Player Aidy Bryant get a major role

And We Are Live....NOW!!!!!

It's Almost That Time

In just a little under an hour, tonight's episode of "Saturday Night Live" will begin.  I will be judging Bruno Mars' performance as the show's host and decide whether or not he is a good actor.  I will also be critiquing the writing of the sketches as well as the performances by the show's cast.  Needless to say, I will be doing A LOT of blogging.

So be sure to have my blog on your computers and your televisions set to NBC by 11:30pm.  Be sure to keep refreshing your screens so you can see my latest comments.  Fell free to post any of your own opinions by clicking the "comment" link underneath any of my posts.  Your feedback means a lot and I thank you for following my blog.

So stay tuned and I'll see you at 11:30pm!

From the Mind of Nate; My Opinions as to How the Current Season of "Saturday Night Live" is Shaping Up

For the record, I am very fair when criticizing the current season of NBC's long-running sketch comedy program “Saturday Night Live.” I always wait until the halfway mark to critique the quality of the writing, the performances of the series' castmembers, and other matters that are worth mentioning. However, when looking over the quality of the first four episodes of Season Thirty-Eight of “Saturday Night Live,” I feel that my opinions must be shared earlier than usual. Seeing as the iconic late-night series faced the departure of three castmembers over the past Summer, I figure it is only fair to make my judgments on how the current season is shaping up. While the departure of Four-Year Castmember Abby Elliott was announced August 2012, I didn't feel as though the show was experiencing a major loss. Within her four years on the program, Elliott's main contribution was a handful of decent celebrity impressions that managed to surface at least a couple times each year. Other than occasionally impersonating actresses like Zooey Deschanel and Angelina Jolie, Elliott didn't do anything remarkable; thus causing her absence to be less-than-noticeable.

While this is so, I was more concerned about the departures of Seven-Year Castmembers Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig. Joining the show in 2005, both performers greatly impacted the past years with stand-out performances and sketches. Throughout his tenure as a castmember, Andy Samberg, provided the series with creative short films that featured catchy melodies, comical characters, and a zany flair that gave the long-running series new life. These pieces, which Samberg created along with his comedy co-horts Akiva Schaffer Jorma Taccone, attracted large audiences; made larger thanks to video-sharing websites like Youtube. Simply put, audiences would tune in week after week to see what the episode's Digital Short would be. Usually, each one would star Samberg along with different castmembers as well as the show's designated host. Simply put, these short films were very successful and they lead to Andy Samberg having a great effect on the weekly comedy program.

While Andy Samberg proved to be a valued member of the “Saturday Night Live” family, it was really Kristen Wiig who proved to be the star. Throughout her seven years on the show, Kristen Wiig managed to save the quality of a given sketch; thanks in large part to her strong talent and engaging stage presence. Even though she was often portraying reoccurring characters that relied on repetitive catchphrases and rehashed premises, Wiig's acting significantly saved the quality of the sketch. Whether she was playing the mischief-making student “Gilly” the constantly-bragging “Penelope,” or stage actress and regular “Secret Word” contestant “Mindy Grasin,” Kristen Wiig bestowed a genuine performance that allowed audience members and viewers at home to laugh. And throughout her tenure on the show, Kristen Wiig proved to be adept at all kinds of comedy: physical, verbal, and subtle. No matter how poorly-written a sketch was, Kristen Wiig made everything better. Her splendid farewell sketch on May 18th 2012 was very much deserved and I was disappointed to see her leave.

So where are we now? On September 15th, 2012, Season Thirty-Eight of “Saturday Night Live” started with “Family Guy” Creator and “Ted” Director Seth MacFarlane serving as the first host. Though MacFarlane was very good, as he managed to improve the quality of the sketches with comical performances, the show, as a whole, wasn't great. The absence of Kristen Wiig was indeed noticeable; as the current female castmembers supplied performances that were either quite fair or very overdrawn. For instance, Vanessa Bayer, who served as a Featured Performer for the past two years and was now upgraded to the series' main cast, mostly gave performances that appeared to be slightly forced. For instance, on the episode's installment of “Weekend Update,” Bayer portrayed Reality Television Sensation Honey Boo Boo; while Five-Year Castmember Bobby Moynihan portrayed the character's mother. At first, Bayer's performance was alright; as she portrayed the little girl with amusing dash. However, as the segment progressed, Bayer's performance became very exaggerated; getting to the point where the volume of her voice became irksome. Her act began to feel forced; so much so that I was counting the minutes until the segment ended. In addition, New Featured Player Cecily Strong made her debut as a political volunteer, commenting on the upcoming election. The writing of the segment wasn't at all funny, and Strong's presentation was quite bothersome. Fortunately, Four-Year Castmember Nasim Pedrad engaged in a creative sketch with Host Seth MacFarlane; one that allowed the actress to demonstrate some very good voice work. Nevertheless, the departure of Kristen Wiig was very evident and it significantly affected the atmosphere of the season premier.

Through I will admit, in all honesty, the episode wasn't entirely bad. In addition to Seth MacFarlane's performance as the host, I was greatly impressed with Jay Pharoah's impersonation of President Barack Obama. After watching Castmember Fred Armisen “treat” audiences with a more-than-lackluster impression of the Forty-Forth President of The United States, it was a significant relief to see Pharoah, who is now a member of the show's main cast after spending two years as a Featured Performer, get assigned such an important role. Right from the start of the episode's opening, Pharoah had a good handle on the impression; as he mimicked our Commander in Chief's vocal work quite well. And, as the season has progressed, Pharoah's impression got even better; leading to a very comical take on the first presidential debate that took place on the October 6th episode of “Saturday Night Live.” I'm truly looking forward to seeing Jay Pharoah portray President Barack Obama throughout the season.

I will also mention that Long-Time Castmember Jason Sudeikis has provided audiences and viewers with very good performances so far this season. As the 2012 Presidential Election heats up, Jason Sudeikis has provided many laughs with his straightforward portraiture of Mitt Romney. Sudeikis' performances have been very entertaining; especially last week when he bestowed his over-eager portrayal of Vice President Joe Biden. Right when last week's Vice Presidential Debate parody started, Sudeikis' brash delivery caused me to laugh almost immediately. Just as we have seen with Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis is more-than-capable of improving the quality of the sketches with his comedic performance. For instance, last week's parody of “The Odyssey” featured the simple joke of the sirens, played by Host Christina Applegate as well as Featured Players Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong, luring the crewmen of Jason Sudeikis' Odysseus to their fate by crooning songs from the 1990s. Though all the performances were very good, it was Sudeikis' comical feat that proved to be the sketch's best asset. I am truly looking forward to seeing Sudeikis shine more as the season progresses.

I will also say that Featured Player Kate McKinnon has also impressed me. Since joining the show this past April, McKinnon has showcased some enjoyable performances. It all started on her first show; which was hosted by Sofia Vergara. During a piece in which Vergara filmed a Pantene advertisement along with Kate McKinnon's Penelope Cruz. Throughout the segment, McKinnon's fearless act proved to evoke much laughter. And this season, McKinnon has showcased some more humorous performances; among which included a sharp-tongued portrayal of Vice Presidential Debate Moderator Martha Raddatz this past weekend as well as an entertaining impersonation of Anne Romney during the September 22nd installment of “Weekend Update.” Even though she has only been on the show for nine episodes as of now, Kate McKinnon has proven to be a very good sketch comedy performer.

I will also mention that Bill Hader, who is now in his eighth year as a castmember, continues to be valuable performer to the show as well. For instance, in a sketch that aired during the season premier, a hapless puppetry instructor, played by Host Seth MacFarlane, was faced with a student, played by Hader, who keeps referencing his war experiences in Grenada throughout the lesson. It was very funny to see Hader utilize a puppet that was basically a felt representation of his on-screen persona. Hader's performance got even more hilarious as the sketch progressed; thus reminding me even further as to how important the longtime castmember is to the show. Bill Hader has continued to provide comical feats throughout the first four episodes of the season; among which include playing a private detective during a piece with Guest Host Joseph Gordon-Levitt on September 22nd as well as exhibiting a quick-but-dead-on impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger during a film parody that took place this past week. In other words, no matter how small the role, Bill Hader continues to be a great performer.

Image of Bill Hader taken from http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&tbo=d&qscrl=1&rlz=1T4ADFA_enUS473US477&biw=1066&bih=542&tbm=isch&tbnid=wXuidF7LIZkdXM:&imgrefurl=http://www.gossipcop.com/seth-macfarlane-bill-hader-puppet-sketch-snl-video-puppets-war-vet-puppetry-saturday-night-live-2012/&docid=tC0FYMlE-YOAiM&imgurl=http://www.gossipcop.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Bill-Hader1-300x171.png&w=300&h=171&ei=dUODUN6PNuPC0QHD34Ew&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=784&vpy=194&dur=5141&hovh=136&hovw=240&tx=154&ty=85&sig=115951090092615185878&page=2&tbnh=117&tbnw=205&start=8&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:8,i:130

I will also say that all four of the season's hosts have been quite good; despite the weak material. As mentioned before, Seth MacFarlane did a fine job hosting the season's opening episode on September 15th; often saving the sketches with amusing performances. In addition. Joseph Gordon-Levitt turned in a memorable second hosting stint on September 22nd; as his immense enthusiasm greatly improved the evening's sketches-- no matter how poorly written a the segment. For instance, during the second-to-last sketch of the evening, a married couple, played by Fred Armisen and Kate McKinnon, introduces a visiting man, played by Featured Player Tim Robinson, to their daughter, played by Gordon-Levitt, through a musical performance. Though the sketch was slightly predictable and seemed to be using the sight of the show's host in a dress as a simple visual punchline,Gordon-Levitt imparted a genuinely funny dance routine; one that made up for the mediocrity of the writing. Furthermore, Daniel Craig, who hosted on October 6th, did the best he could to save the episode; despite the fact that the writing in nearly every piece was either mundane or ridiculous. For example, a sketch in which a group of male castmembers and Craig portrayed construction workers hitting on women was weekly scribed; as the main joke proved to be that our host's character was inept at making pick-up lines. Though the dialogue wasn't very funny, Craig made a strong effort to improve the quality of the sketch; going as far as to speak each line with absolute zest. Craig maintained positive performances throughout the show and ended up working quite well with the cast. Lastly, this past Christina Applegate performed well; despite the weak material. Whether it was performing a song about the relaxing time period before the major holidays for her monologue or portraying an overzealous dance instructor, Applegate blended in well with the show's talented troupe and provided life for even the show's thinnest segments. No matter what, these hosts were all great and managed to improve the quality of every episode thanks in large to their performances.

So here we are now. For tonight's show will feature Recording Artist Bruno Mars as both the host and musical guest. Having never seen Mars act; I am uncertain as to how tonight will go. Will Mars successfully entertain and provide laughter? Or will he prove to be unfunny and impart a listless presentation throughout the show's ninety minute duration?

Throughout the show, as usual, I will be commenting on the sketches as well as the performances by the performances from the cast. But I will be paying close attention to Bruno Mars' turn as the show's host. I will critique his chemistry with the cast, his comedic timing, and how he's conducting himself throughout every segment. And for my review following the broadcast, I will decide whether or not Bruno Mars can be considered a legitimate actor.
