"Saturday Night Live" Episode Review- Lady Gaga Hosts on 11/16/2013

Cold Opening- “CBC Toronto”

I had a feeling that Bobby Moynihan would be portraying Canadian Governor Rob Ford this week. And that also “Saturday Night Live” would be spoofing the governor's admission to smoking cocaine. However, this wasn't very funny. Practically the whole sketch seemed to be an excuse for Moynihan to act in a complete ridiculous manner in his attempt to parody the government official. First of all, it seemed that the six-year castmember was trying to act like the late Chris Farley while portraying Rob Ford throughout the entire opening: from his “goofy” soft-voiced speaking tone to his boisterous cursing when screaming at the people of Canada when delivering his “apology.”The only part I laughed at was the “60 Minutes” spoof towards the end of the bit; when Lara Logan, played by Kate McKinnon, kept stating that she believed every false admission that Moynihan's Rob Ford “confessed.” Other than that, this wasn't a very great opening.

Monologue

This was quite fun. It was nice to see Lady Gaga poke fun at herself and the entire concept of pandering to the crowd. I enjoyed seeing her perform a variant of her current hit “Applause” and I liked the concept of her going into the audience to connect with some people-- each one she conversed with were played by a “Saturday Night Live” castmember. I liked the brief portion she had with Bobby Moynihan and I liked his urging the audience to applaud for “people working out their differences.” Lady Gaga gave a good performance throughout the monologue and I liked the incorporation of the music from Frank Sinatra's “New York, New York” into the closing of the monologue. The segment was enjoyable and Lady Gaga's performance was very good.

Sketch- “Waking Up with Kimye”

I'm getting tired of “Saturday Night Live” building talk show sketches revolved around random celebrities. The very idea of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian hosting a morning talk show was just plain silly to being with. Though it should be said that Jay Pharoah's impression of Kanye West has improved since he last did it this past season. In addition, I'm happy to see Nasim Pedrad star in the first sketch three episodes in a row. Her impression of Kim Kardiashian was alright and she interacted well with Pharoah as Kanye West. I did get a chuckle at the fact that the show's house band consisted of various members of te Kardashian family. But my biggest laugh came from Lady Gaga as her Apple employee character saying that she feels that people who try too hard with their outfits are hiding something about themselves. I like seeing Lady Gaga poke fun at herself, and she played her character well. This was an alright sketch but I hope it doesn't become a reoccurring sketch too quickly.

Sketch-Commercial- “Whaaat? The Worst Cover Songs of All Time”

Speaking of “Saturday Night Live” featuring sketches with talk shows hosted by random celebrities, here is another type of segment that have been played out a bit too much in recent years: commercials for CDs or DVD compilations featuring songs being sung by random musicians. And this particular one wasn't that great. First of all, Taran Killam's impression of Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, but he wasn't given very funny lines. The whole idea of artists contributing their most unforgettable screw-ups to an album was alright in itself, but most of the impressions weren't that great. I did get a small laugh out of Bobby Moynihan's portrayal of Susan Boyle and Aidy Bryant's body movements when impersonating Adele were amusing as well. But my favorite part was Lady Gaga's contribution being her “singing” Madonna's “Express Yourself” when she meant to be crooning her hit song “Born this Way”. Watching Lady Gaga poke fun at the fact that both songs sound alike was funny and I'm very happy to see her poke fun at herself once again. Her part in this sketch was clearly my favorite,.

“Weekend Update”

This was a mostly weak edition of the weekly news parody segment. None of Seth meyers' and Cecily Strong's jokes were particularly very funny. What's more, their portions seemed a bit more rushed than usual and they seemed to be going from one joke to the next in a very fast-paced manner. In addition, I wasn't very fond of Kenan Thompson's pre-taped segment. He appeared as a crotchety old man named “Mr. Senior.”; and his pre-filmed segment featured his character running up to people on the street and harassing them over rushing the Thanksgiving holiday season just came off as forced and annoying. What’s more, I'm getting tired of Thompson being heavily featured this season. I've stated this over and over already. I just wish his appearances would be limited as the season goes on; allowing the rest of the castmembers more time to shine. As for Taran Killam's performance as speech critic “Jebidiah Atkinson,” it must be said that this was the best part of this past week's edition of “Weekend Update.” Though the writing for his character was weak, I got many laugh's out of the four-year castmember's hilarious performance. Watching him portray his speech critic character, who refused to take back the negative comments he made towards Abraham Lincoln as well as other politicians, was humorous. I got laughs as the segment went on and the various comments Killam's character made regarding the quality of his speech review (i.e. exclaiming that one of his more was lackluster critiques that was printed was “just a right draft” as well as his delaration that he will still continue reading his reviews despite Seth Meyers pleading him not to). Killam's character was the only bright spot during this rather lackluster edition of “Weekend Update.”

Sketch- Co-op Board Interview

Now this was a sketch that had the potential to be good; but it fell apart due to poor writing. Vanessa Bayer and Featured Player Beck Bennett play a couple meeting with the eccentric board members of a apartment building they were planning to move into. Most of the questions that each member of the co-op board asked them during the meeting were either slightly humorous or just borderline ridiculous. While I was happy to see Featured Player Kyle Mooney have actual lines in a live sketch; nut his role of playing the odd husband to an equally bizarre wife, played by Aidy Bryant, who were warning Bayer's and Beckett's characters about the sounds they make when having sex wasn't funny at all. I did get a few chuckles from Lady Gaga's character; who spoke and dressed like Marisa Tomei's character from “My Cousin Vinny.” However, I did not fine Kenan Thompson's janitor character funny at all; who basically kept going on about how he keeps all his keys to the apartment building around his genitals. The writing for Thompson's character, as well as for Bryant's and Mooney' characters, just came off forced and just plain juvenile. Vanessa Bayer and Beck Bennett played their straitfoward roles finely, though I wish they were given funnier material for their characters.

Sketch- “Spotlightz!”

This was a decent performance-based sketch. Lady Gaga and some of the “Saturday Night Live” cast members played young child actors performing in stage productions of high-profile films like “The Social Network” and “Forrest Gump” as well as a performance “Breaking Bad.” I remember that Vanessa Bayer's character, a child actress named “Laura Parsons.” first appeared in a sketch back in November of 2010 when Scarlett Johansson last hosted. Bayer did a decent job as her character; but my biggest laughs was from Lady Gaga's character, a child actress named “Lizzy Jacobson”; who, along with a young actor named “Tristan,” played by Taran Killam, acted out a child-friendly scene in an adaptation of “Training Day.” There were other laughs I got from the sketch; particularly when Bayer's character “Lauara Parsons” acted out a scene from a child-friendly stage production of “Breaking Bad”; in which Killam's character portrayed Bryan Cranson's “Walter White” singing a small song about selling crystal meth. The writing for this sketch was fine and the performances were all good.

Short film- Blockbuster

I have to say that “Saturday Night Live” has been putting in a lot of effort in their short films this season. In this piece, Bobby Moynihan, Taran Killam, and Mike O'Brien played three Blockbuster employees who, after being told by their boss (Beck Bennett), that the popular video chain has closed, fall into a state of despair. The three castmembers' characters lament over the loss of their job; and I got lots of laughs from Killams' on-screen persona having to be pulled away from a Redbox he was clinging to as well as Moynihan's employee giving a cardboard cut-out of a character from “The Croods”, that he had taken with him after the store closed, a viking funeral. The sketch got even funnier when the three characters came across a society of Blockbuster employees ans how they decided to settin in and eventually engage in a make-out session with Lady Gaga's character. The twist at the end of the short film also provided laughs. All in all, a very creative and humorous short filmed piece.

Sketch- Fourth Grade Talent Show

Finally! Featured Player John Milhiser gets a real starring role in a sketch! He and Lady Gaga play two overly-eager parents who, while sitting in the audience of the talent show, excitedly coach their daughter throughout her performance. Our host and Milhiser did very well performing together; and I am very impressed with the latter's physical comedic performance. I got a kick out out of the increasingly-hilarious dance movements; especially when they started removing their shirts and engaged in Floor show-style dancing. In addition, I also got some laughs out of the grimacing of the school principle, played by Aidy Bryant, who kept shaking her head with disapproval when watching the parents perform their exuberant dancing. Lady Gaga did a great job here and judging from John Milhiser's performance as the father, I have to admit that he has potential on the show. All in all, an enjoyable sketch.

Sketch- “Lady Gaga in 2065”

This was a good closing sketch. Set fifty years in the future, an elderly Lady Gaga tries very hard to get a hotel handyman, played by Kenan Thompson, to remember her songs and career. While Thompson pulled off a decent performance as his character, who was unable to remember hardly anything about the singer's career, it was our host who turned in the memorable performance. Watching Lady Gaga play herself in the future was enjoyable, and I loved seeing her tirelessly try to bring remind Thompson's character about the songs she sang and the outfits she wore. I loved her referencing her duet with Beyonce when performing the song “Telephone” as well as her playing the piano while singing her song “Applause” in a reminiscent manner at the end of the sketch, I enjoyed her performance very much and the whole sketch just basically demonstrated just how endearing Lady Gaga can be. She gave a GREAT performance as the show's host and she proved that she was up for anything throughout the entire night.

And, that's the show. I enjoyed Lady Gaga's performance as the show's host very much. She was a good performers in the show's sketches and she had good chemistry with the “Saturday Night Live” cast. As for her musical performances, I thought, while her performance of “Do What U Want” with R.Kelly was just alright, her performance of “Gypsy” was just terrific!!! Her singing was great and I loved seeing her play the piano and the guitar with grand energy. I really hope she host's “Saturday Night Live” again.

As for the show itself, I feel that the better sketches took place after 'Weekend Update.” “Spotlightz”, the Blockbuster short film, the talent show sketch, and “Lady Gaga in 2065” were the best sketches of the show. Lady Gaga's performance in the monologue made it very good, “Waking Up with Kimye” was just alright at best and the co-op interview sketch was quite poorly-written. Most of the cast did well this episode. Vanessa Bayer, Taran Killam, and John Milhiser did the best; though it should be mentioned that I did like Jay Pharoah's impression of Kanye West. As said before< I am getting tired of Kenan Thompson's overexposure and I hope he gets used in smaller doses as the season goes on, Though I will say his performance in the “Lady Gaga in 2065” sketch was fine. He interacted well with Lady Gaga throughout the sketch and that was his best performance of the entire episode. I'm just glad that the new castmembers are getting more screentime as the season progresses.

And that's my review of Lady Gaga's episode. My review of Josh Hutcherson's show from this past weekend should be up bt tomorrow night.

Thank you all for following my blog and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment!

My review will be up sometime this week. Thank you all for following my blog tonight. I appreciate all of your support. Thank you again and stay tuned for more Nater-Tainment!!!! Good night everybody!!

Well, that's the show

Lady Gaga did a VERY GOOD job as the host and the musical guest. She gave GREAT performances tonight!! of course, the writing wasn't entirely that great.

Well, that's pretty much the show.

There can't be much else other than the goodnights

Lady Gaga was VERY GOOD in that sketch!!

She was a VERY GOOD host tonight! She gave good performances in all of her sketches.

I just wish that Kenan Thompson wasn't being shoved into playing the male lead in this sketch

This isn't a bad sketch. Lady Gaga has given me more laughs than Kenan Thompson in this sketch.

This isn't a bad sketch

Lady Gaga playing an elderly version of herself in the future. She's giving a good performance here.

Commercials are on now

In all honesty, this hasn't been q terrible show. There's been some humorous skits tonight.

That was a good sketch

I was happy to see Featured Player John Milhiser FINALLY get to do something on the show!! His and Lady Gaga's dancing was hilarious! He finally got to showcase some really funny stuff. he's a good physical comedidian.

We are BACK!!!

That was GREAT!!!

Commercials are on now.

This is a VERY ENJOYABLE performance!!!

Bravo, Lady Gaga!!!!

I'm REALLY enjoying this performance!

She's got a GREAT voice and she's really rocking it here!

Lady Gaga's performing now

She's doing a very good job. She's a GREAT singer!

Commercials are on now

This Blockbuster short film is pretty humorous

Their sad reactions to the store's closing are pretty funny. I like the over-dramatcism of their reactions. I like them cavoting around the Blockbuster video tape box forts, Them forgetting about Best Buy was funny as well. That was a creative and humorous short film.

Nasim Pedrad and Lady Gaga are doing alright as their characters

But they don't have a lot of funny material to work with.

This is another weird premise for a sketch

The joke of child actors starring in kid-friendly versions of high-profile films.

We are back!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Kate McKinnonis giving me some laughs as her character

Kenan Thompson isn't giving me a lot of laughs as his character. Lady Gaga made me laugh with her impression of Marissa Tomei's character from "My Cousin Vinny." This sketch itself was just strange. Beck bennett seems to be keep getting assigned the straightman role in live sketches. This was just a weird sketch.

This sketch is very strange so far

AiThe co-op board material so far isn't very funny so/

We are BACK!!!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Taran Killam's performance made this segment better.

He REALLY made that segment work with his delivery and acting. He should be used more than Kenan thompson. Killam's segment was the only time I really laughed at dduring this 'Update' edition. His performance saved everything.

Killam's giving a good performance

His delivery is improving the quality of the segment. The writing isn't that great, but his performance is good.

Good to see Taran Killam on "Update" again

This bit is humorous so far. Killam's usually does creative bits whenever he's on 'Update.' But he hasn't been used on the weekly news segment this sason

This has been a very weak installment of "Weekend Update" so far tonight

Kenan tHompson's schtick has gotten very old!!!

He's just not that funny anymore. He needs to used sparongly on the show. He's not cut out to be the show's lead actor!!!

I'm REALLY getting tired of seeing Kenan Thompson being front-and-center on the show this season

They have SIX NEW CASTMEMBERS!!!! They are hardly being used tonight. Why hire them if they aren't going to be frequently used on the show???

Seth Meyers' joke about the woman on the Obamacare website wasn't bad

All of Cecily Strong's jokes so far tonight aren't funnt at all so far tonight.

"Weekend Update" is on now

Commercials are on now

This show is going by very quickly tonight. They only had two sketches so far tonight. They must be putting more into the show after "Weekend Update" which should be coming up next.

Nevertheless, she's a VERY GOOD performer.

I enjoyed her singing. The song wasn't bad at ll. But I like her older songs better.

I Like this song, but she has some better ones

She's performing her new song "Do What You Want with My Body"

She's giving a good performance. This new song of hers isn't bad

We are back with Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga's first performance is coming up

Commercials are on now

Kenan Thompson's Rick Ross impression wasn't funny at all

Bobby Moynihan's Nathan Lane impressipn wasn't bad/ I like Lady Gaga making fun of Madonna by just singing her own song "Born this Way." This wasn't a bad ad spoof, though some of the writing and jokes weren't very funny. Lady Gaga's part was my favorite bit. She has a good sense of humor about herself, She's being a good spott..

This could be an funny commercial sketch

Masim Pedrad's Britney Spears impression is alright

We are Back!!

Next sketch is coming up

I don't know much about Josh Hutcherson and Haim

And commercials are on now

Lady Gaga's poking fun at herself through her character

Basically making fun of the fact that she wears exhuberant costumes. That wasn't a very funny sketch. Lady Gaga's bit at the end was humrous though.

The performances in this sketch arre alright

Though it's not very funny

This sketch isn't very funny so far

I feel that the writers of "Saturday Night Live" are just making talk show sketches hosted by any celebrity.

A talk show hosted by Kanye West and Kim Kardashian? Alright

Nasim Pedrad's Kim Kardashian impression is alright as usual. Jay Pharoah's impression of Kanye West isn't bad

We are BACK!!!!!!

First sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

I like this commercial parody with Jay Pharoah's Impression of President Barack Obama

This is a good parody of those Axel Body Strength commercials.

That bit with Bobby Moynihan was alright

This monologue is alright. Lady Gaga did a fine job.

She's a good entertainer

And she does a good job connecting with the audience

Lady gaga's a VERY GOOD singer!!

Lady Gaga's doing well on stage

Here pandering jokes are pretty funny.

This is Lady Gaga's first hosting stint

I REALLY hope she gets good sketches tonight

I hope tonight's show is a good one

That wasn't a great opening at all

The "60 Minutes" bit was my favorite part.

This "60 Minutes" jab is pretty funny

Jay Pharoah's appearance in this sketch isn't very funny

And the joke of him keep apologizing in press conference video form hasn't been that funny. And these "apology videos" aren't funny at all

Bobby Moynihan and Taran Killam are doing well with maintaining their mock-Canadian accents

The writing so far is alright at best. That joke of the mayor cursing wasn't funny at all

CBC Toronto News Coverage Opening

I had a feeling that Bobby Moynihan would be playing the Toronto mayor who was cought smoking a joint on live television

And We Are Live......NOW!!!!!!

It's Almost That Time!

A "That's Nater-Tainment!" Special writing: a Review of Kerry Washington's 11/02/13 "Saturday Night Live" Hosting Debut and Sketch Ideas for Tonight's Show

Cold Opening- The Oval Office

Now, THIS was a very creative opening. It's always nice to see “Saturday Night Live” poke funt at itself through one of its sketches. In a creative attempt to address the fact that the long-running variety program does not fave a female African-American castmember, Guest Host Kerry Washington plays First Lady Michelle Obama and has no choice but to walk-off screen whenever the sketch called for the actress to assume a different impression-- such as portraying an exuberant Oprah Winfrey or being asked to go offscreen to change into Beyonce as well. Castmember Jay Pharoah did a fine job portraying President Barack Obama as always. Fellow performer Taran Killam got some laughs in his role as the Commander-in-Chief's press secretary; who would enter the Oval Office to announce the visiting the room to address the arrival of the administration's biggest supporters. The joke that Kerry Washington having to go offscreen to perform quick costume changes quite humorous; and the entire opening showcased just how game the actress would be for the evening's sketches. I also got a laugh out of an accompanying onscreen disclaimer that, among various points addressed “Saturday Night Live”'s lack of female African American castmembers as well as the admittance that the show needs to fix the situation at hand. Another laugh came from the arrival of “six Matthew McConagheys”- a clear joke on the fact that the show had hired six new white castmembers. The appearance of Rev. Al Sharpton at the end of the sketch felt kind of tacked on, but I did get a laugh out of his statement that we have learned nothing at all from this opening sketch. Overall, a very well-written and well—performed sketch as well as a good way to open the show.

Monologue- Kerry Washington

This wasn't a bad monologue at all. Kerry Washington, while talking about her time in New York City that week, is approached by some “Saturday Night Live” castmembers; who ask her for help in dealing with some scandals they are involved in. Though never have seeing the ABC series “Scandal”, in which Washington stars in, I pretty much got the joke of the monologue a few minutes into it. Highlights of the monologue included Bobby Moynihan sighing with relief over the fact that his reputation isn't worth anything when Washington said that was the only thing that could cost him in the midst of the press getting a hold of a personal photo of him and his girl friend as well as Our gust host helping Kenan Thompson locate his missing keys. However, the biggest laugh I got from the monologue was when Kerry Washington asking Vanessa Bayer whether or not she has played Miley Cyrus enough lately--- right after the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers asked who would portray the pop star after being instructed by our guest host instructing her to catch the first flight out of New York City in an attempt to get away in the thick of a scandal. Seeing the sketch comedy program poke fun at itself in two sketches was nice and Kerry Washington did a fine job interacting with the cast and also appeared comfortable with the comedic material. All in all, a clever and entertaining monologue.

Sketch- Career Week Ceremony

I just want to start off by saying that it's nice to see Nasim Pedrad star as the main character in the evening's first sketch of the night for two consecutive shows; considering that she's hardly been doing anything during the season's first three episodes. That being said, this sketch wasn't great; mostly due to weak writing. That being said, Nasim Pedrad gave a good performance as her very-excited career counselor character. Pedrad did a fine job performing as her character, who was giving a presentation following a school's career week. She did a good job whenever she was on stage by herself and she must be commended for enabling her character to maintain her character’s constantly-excited attitude and did a fine job keeping the audience's attention. I will say, however, that Kerry Washington didn't really contribute anything special as Pedrad's character's assistant; but that's the fault of the writers. In addition, the constant usage of random sound effects, that were being selected by the shy son of Pedrad's character, played by Featured Player Mike O'Brien, got old fast. Nevertheless, Pedrad gave a decent performance as her character and the sketch wasn't bad; even if the writing wasn't that great.

Short Film- “What Does My Girl Say?”

Having seen the very-popular Youtube music video for Yivis' song “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)”, I have to say this was an alright parody. Jay Pharoah and Kerry Washington did a fine job spoofing the video; which was basically centered around the premise of the latter's character finding out that her boyfriend has been communicating with other women. Pharoah did a decent job emulating Yivis' singing style and Washington gave an energetic performance as the girlfriend. My biggest laugh in the sketch came from Pharoah repeatedly saying “I don't know. Please don't go. You pay for my phone” following his girlfriend's response to his unfaithfulness. However, while I do applaud “Saturday Night Live” for spoofing Yivis' successful online video, I can't help but wonder just how other late night comedy programs could come up with even funnier spoofs,

Sketch- How's He Doing?

This sketch was first done when Former “Saturday Night Live” Castmember Maya Rudolph hosted back in February of 2012.. The basic joke of the sketch was basically the same as the first one: the African-American panelists would support the president no matter what. Kenan Thompson did alright portraying the host of the talk show and Jay Pharoah and Kerry Washington played the two panelists. The main laughs I got from the sketch were from the panelists supporting the president no matter what religion he was; even if he were to convert to Scientology or even become an Orthodox Jew. I also got a laugh from Thompson's character saying that a fallowing episode of the talk show would deal with figuring out who would be the difficult one in a relationship: President Barack Obama or Kanye West. Thompson, Pharoah, and Washington performed well together and the sketch unfolded decently. This wasn't a bad sketch, though this installment basically played out the same way as its first installment.

Sketch- Miss Universe Moscow 2013

Well, let me first say that this sketch provided a good opportunity for the “Saturday Night Live” female castmembers to all star in the same sketch. But, other than that, this sketch's humor mainly centered around the women speaking in mock-foreign languages. In addition, some of the humor in this sketch just seemed a bit to over the top; particularly Aidy Bryant, as Miss Greenland, punching Miss. Switzerland, played by Featured Player Noel Wells, in the back of her head with her shoulder, as well as Kate McKinnon , as Miss. Bolivia, laying a big kiss on the lips of Nasim Pedrad, as one of the hosts of the ceremony (who referred to herself as “someone from the E! Network” at the start of the show.) In addition, Kerry Washington offered a couple laughs as her character “Miss. Uganda”; particularly her delivery when she was stating that she was going to keep her pageant dress. But the biggest laughs I got from the sketch came from the interplay between Taran Killam and Pedrad as the the ceremony hosts; especially from the latter commenting that she laughs be cause she “hates the silence.” Nevertheless, while much of the humor in this sketch came from some of the more forced material, I enjoyed seeing the women of “Saturday Night Live” front-and-center.

Weekend Update”

This wasn't a particularly bad installment of the weekly news segment. My favorite quips of the segment came from co-anchor Cecily Strong: saying that the St. Louis Cardinals lost the World Series to Mumford and Sons (The Red Sox) as well as, jesting that Kanye West's adapting of the Confederate Flag into his merchandise pertains to the idea that every time something upsets people, the rapper makes it his own (referring to his marriage to Kim Kardashian). This particular installment of “Update” probably ended up featuring Strong's best performance as Seth Meyers' co-anchor.. As for this particular installment's featured segments, Kate MCKinnon gave a humorous performance as German Chancellor Angela Merkel; who was very nervous about the NSA spying on her phone activity; particularly her Google Search history. My biggest laughs from this included her fear over the NSA being concerned about her looking up feline videos as well as her looking up pictures of “Jason Segel with no shirt” and “Jason Segel fully dressed,” McKinnon once again did well with er segment and I'm glad she's been getting regular opportunities to play new characters on “Weekend Update”, However, it should also be said that I did enjoy Kenan Thompson and Jay Pharoah's appearances as Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal respectfully. While Thompson's impression has gotten old by now, I did like his comment that Pharoah's Shaquille O 'Neal's head looks like a potato; and the latter simply saying that he likes potatoes. Pharoah brought some laughs as his portrayal of Shaquille O' Neal; mainly through his constant eye crossing and head bobbing. Pharoah and Thompson interacted well together and, even though the segment went a bit long, their performances saved it, All in all, this was probably the best edition of “Weekend Update” so far this season.

Sketch- Cartoon Catchphrase Game Show

I have mixed feelings about this sketch. First, it must be said that the idea of contestants having to guess which cartoon character said a particular phrase was a creative idea for a game show. In addition, the idea that the contestants had to bother phoning a friend to find out which cartoon character said the catchphrase in question was also humorous. However, the idea that Aidy Bryant's character "Diane" finding out that her husband was sleeping with another woman at the time of her call wasn't very funny at all; in fact, it was a downright mean-spirited form of comedy. The sketch got worse as it went on; as Vanessa Bayer's contestant, "Gwen", finding out that her sister was also sleeping with the husband of Aidy Bryant's "Diane". The sketch just basically used mean-spirited humor for its jokes and probably would have worked with just Kerry Washington's game show host character slowly becoming frustrated over the contestants being unable to figure outt which cartoon character said whichever catchphrase was mentioned. While Bryant gave a good performance as her character-- game show host "Melanie Griffish." I feel the entire bit could have been an opportunity for Kerry Washington to showcase her comedic side as she would eventually become more irritated by the contestants being unable to answer the questions without calling their friend. In other words, this sketch was more mean-spirited than it should have been. Though I will say this was a creative idea for a sketch and all the performances were good.

Image of (from left to right) Aidy Bryant as "Diane" and Vanessa Bayer as "Gwen" taken from  http://snltranscripts.jt.org/13/13ecartoon.phtml

Sketch- Principle Frye

I am pretty tired of this reoccurring character by Jay Pharoah. The constant joke of Pharoah's character making announcements in a fast-paced manner in-between breathing heavily over his microphone. This sketch also plays out the same way every time it takes place;; with Pharoah's character making announcements in-between other people making announcements. The only difference with this installment was that it took place at a carnival rather than the auditorium of a school. I hardly laughed at all. Kenan Thompson's janitor character and Kerry Washington’s character didn't get a lot to do, but they did what they could with their material. Overall, however, this was just a very weak sketch.

Sketch- Date or Diss

And, here was another badly-written sketch. I'm getting very tired of “Saturday Night Live” making spoofing MTV's reality shows. The only real laughs I got was from the announcer stating that the female contestants were told what to say as well as Taran Killam's character's confused reactions to the ladies' reactions. Other than that, this sketch wasn't very funny. Kerry Washington did what she could with her character, but she wasn't given anything funny at all. In addition, Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong weren't very funny as their character as well, and it just seemed as if the writers were more concerned with employing forced humor to get the audience laughing at their characters. This wasn't a great sketch at all.

Short Film- Ice Cream

Now, THIS was a creative short film! I'm very happy that Featured Players Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney are getting opportunities to create and star in short films for “Saturday Night Live”. In this short film, Vanessa Bayer and Bennett play two customers at an ice cream parlor who give a clueless employee, played by Mooney, too much to think about when the male patron makes a joke. Watching Mooney's character, and later his boss, played by Taran Killam, get lost in dream sequences where there are performing lots of research in an attempt to figure out Bennett's customer's joke In fact, the overall bizarreness of the final sequence made me laugh out loud with genuine surprise. These short films that Bennett and Mooney ha  ve been showcasing are a good addition to “Saturday Night Live” this season and I'm looking forward to seeing them bring us more as the season goes on.

Image of (from left to right) Beck Bennett as am ice cream store customer, Kyle Mooney (as his ice cream parlor character imagining himself in the background, Vanessa Bayer as another ice cream parlor customer and Mooney (as his ice cream parlor character behind the counter) taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/13/13eicecream.phtml

Well, that's my review. Overall, Kerry Washington did a fine job as the show's host and she did whatever she could with the material she was given. I definitely would like to see her host again in latter seasons; especially when the writing gets better. She and Norton have done well with their first host stints, and I hope the next two hosts do as well.

Which brings me to tonight’s show. Lady Gaga is making her hosting debut on “Saturday Night Live.” Though, she has appeared in sketches when she previously served as the show's musical guests on October 3rd, 2009, which featured Guest Host Ryan Reynolds, and again on May 21st 2011; with Guest Host Justin Timberlake. I remember her second musical guest appearance very well, as she got the opportunity to join Timberlake in some sketches; especially co-starring in a popular digital short. I'm sure you all remember “The Golden Rule”; which featured Timberlake and Andy Samberg as their sunglasses-wearing, R&B -Crooning Bad Boys. The short featured Timberlake's and Samberg's characters having a 3-way with one lady; played by Lady Gaga. The short film was much fun and it became a very popular Internet video. Lady Gaga also joined Timberlake in a sketch where he played his well-known singing-and-dancing mascot; in which she dressed as a liquor bottle to his bottle of bourbon. Lady Gaga also appeared in a game show sketch where they played contestants on a game show entitled “What's That Name?” In the sketch, Lady Gaga did a fine and humorous job being able to identify more people than Timberlake ever could; even being able to identify a member of his former music group NSYNC; who was played by then-Featured Player Taran Killam. In all her sketch performances, Lady Gaga performed well and she interacted well with Timberlake as well as the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers.

So, I'm not too worried about Lady Gaga's performances as the host and musical guest. I'm looking forward to seeing her work with the current castmembers and demonstrate her comedic acting chops. What I'm worried about is, of course, the poor quality of the show's writing. As we all know, most of this season's sketches haven't been very funny and I'm worried that Lady Gaga will be subject to a lot of poorly-written sketches.

With that being said, I would like to take this opportunity to share three sketch ideas for tonight's show:

Sketch #1: Lady Gaga Meets Her Male Equivalent

Maybe, as part of a sketch or even her monologue, I would like to see Lady Gaga meet her Male counterpart. I just think it would be funny to see a male castmember, played by possibly Taran Killam or one of the new male castmembers, sing in the same manner that she does. However, as the bit would go on, it would become evident that the male counterpart has no real talent and he's just standing up there on stage making a fool of himself. As the sketch nears its close, the male performers should break character and admit that Lady Gaga is the real talent and he states that he's just embarrassing himself on live television. This would give Lady Gaga an opportunity to possibly poke fun at herself and play the straightwoman in the sketch.

Sketch #2- Lady Gaga's House of Gaga-Style

Here's an idea for a commercial parody. Lady Gaga advertises the first of her new clothing stores where people can buy her outfits in order to give them more confidence. It would be funny seeing some “Saturday Night Live” castmembers play people who, after dressing up in Lady Gaga's outfits, are able to take on any challenges thrown their way. This could provide Lady Gaga with additional opportunities to poke fun at herself and maybe even poke fun at one of her own songs (spoof either “Born this Way” or even her new song “Applause”) when singing a brief jingle for her store. This would be a nice and simple sketch to right before her first musical performance or even close out the show.

Sketch #3- Lady Gaga's Ancestors

In this sketch, Lady Gaga could take a look back at her decedents. We would see brief vignettes where the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers play her relatives from ages ago. And each of them would be a version of Lady Gaga that would dress in the fashion of that time as well as sing parody versions of her own songs with lyrics that pertain to the time periods. Maybe we could see a castmember play a prehistoric ancestor of Lady Gaga who would wear elaborate lion cloths and crudely utter some sounds that would eventually, down the line, become what would be the opening for her song “Bad Romance.” In addition, maybe we could see one of Lady Gaga's relatives in 1776. Maybe the writers could make the quill that John Hancock, played by one of the “Saturday Night Live” castmembers, used to sign the Declaration of independence came from a feathered outfit worn by one of Lady Gaga's ancestors; played by another one of the “Saturday night Live” castmembers. The outfit would eventually become the inspiration for one of Lady Gaga's elaborate outfits of the past few years. And the sketch would go on like this with more of Lady Gaga's relatives being presented and how they all helped Lady Gaga become the artist she is today.

So these are my own sketch ideas for tonight's show. I just hope the writing is good tonight and that Lady Gaga gets to star in creative sketches.

But no matter what, don't miss my live-blogging soverage of tonight's episode of “Saturday Night Live”. Show's over

Well, that was a pretty uneven show. Some good stuff. Some bad sketches. A mix of good and bad performances. Kerry Washington did a fine job as the show's host.

Well, that's pretty much the show

The joke about the two cream shop workers drifting off into dream sequences is humorous

That was a strange short film. But I'm glad to see the new guys present another short. And now, commercials are on. The show is practically over.

Good to see another short film from Beck bennett and Kyle Mooney

This is an interesting short film

Kerry Washington has been giving good performances tonight

Unfortunately, the writing hasn't been entirely great for her. he's been giving good performances tonight. The opening and the monologue were particularly funny; as was the parody of "What Does the Fox Say?" This sketch, however, wasn't funny at all. It seemed to use crude humor as an easy way to get laughs from the audience. And now, commercials are on.

We are back with a MTV sketch parody

This sketch osn't very funny. The segment seems to be filled with crude humor that doesn't sit well. The performances in this sketch are alright, though.

commercials are on now

This show truly is a mix of alright sketches as well as segments that aren't humorous.

Eminem is performing well again

He's a good performer. Though, as I said before, I don't agree with everything he sings about. He performs well and he writes his own music.

Eminem is on again now

This song seems a bit darker than his first one.

The show is coming back soon

The "stop bobbing for apples in the shark tank if you value your lips and your face" bit was slightly humorous

Otherwise, this sketch wasn't very funny/ Jay Pharoah gave a fair performance though. And now, commercials are on.

I'm getting a little tired of this "Principle Frye" character from Jay Pharoah

He performs the character well but the wbasic set-up for his character is basically just the same each time. Though I do like the change of scenery of the sketch taking place in a carnival rather than a school. At least they changed the setting this time. Otherwise, this sketch is basically resembling previous installments.

We are back with the next sketch

A Fall carnival sketch

Next sketch is coming up

The performances in that sketch were good, though

And now, we have commercials

There are two jokes in this sketch:

The contestants don't know the answers to the questions. But in addition, they ffind out that hteir loved ones are involved in having affairs. That joke isn't very funny though. I kish that the only joke was that the contestants can't figure out the answers to the simplest questions. The "phone-a-friend"concept with them finding out all this scandelous behavior wasn't very funny. It was just a bit too much for my taste.

This is humorous

What the heck is going on? Her husband is cheating on her with a prostitute. This is an original sketch. It's a bit strange though

A "Cartoon Catchphrase" game show sketch

This could be good.

We are Back!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Commercials are on now

Jay Pharoah's performance as Shaquille O'Neal was very good

This wasn't an entirely bad edition of "Weekend Update." Three good jokes and decent performances. This was probably Cecily Strong's best night so far as Seth Meyers' co-anchor. Kate McKinnon was also good. Though the writing for segment as well as Thompson's and Pharoah's piece as well wasn't great. But, the weak material was improved by some good performances.

Kenan Thompson as Charles Barkley and Jay Pharoah as Shaquille O'Neal

I'm happy to see that Jay Pharoah is getting a lot of screentime tonight. He's having a good show so far. I like his impression of Shaquille O'Neal. Kenan Thompson's Charles Barkley impression, however, has gotten a bit old by now. He and Pharoah do have good chemistry. They interact very well.

I liked Cecily Strong's joke aimed at Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

These three jokes that I've mentioned have been the best from Seth Meyers and Cecily Strong. Their other quips haven't been so funny, though

The material isn't great here

But McKinnon is doing what she can with it. Her Google Search comments are alright, though. I liked the "Jason Segel, no shirt" and being fully "fully clothed" search options were humorous. Not terrible. Good performance by Kate McKinnon

Good to see Kate McKinnon back on "Update" again

She's giving a good performance as this character.

That joke about The Obamas' pet dog Bo was funny

TCecily Strong's joke that The Boston Red Sox resemble Mumford and Sons was funny too

We are back with "Weekend Update"

"Weekend Update" should be coming up next

Not bad.

Good performance by Eminem. Commercials are on right now

This isn't a bad performance

He's not my favorite rapper. But he's giving an entertaining performance here

I don't always agree with everything Eminem sings about

But I do admire him for writing his own music. He's got a lot of energy for this performance.

This must be Eminem's fifth time on the show as a musical guest.

Good for him.

We are back with Eminem!

Eminem's first performance is coming up

Commercials are on now

That was an abrupt ending. That wasn't a a great sketch

This show is a mixed bag so far-- just like some of the other shows this season.

Aidy Bruant's performance is a bit too over-the-top for my taste

They are doing a parody of the upcoming Miss Universe pagent

The performances in thia sketch are alright so far. Kerry Washington played her Ughandan contestant well. Though much of the material in this sketch isn't very funny. The castmembers and Kerry Washington are doing what they could with the material though

We are Back!!!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on now

Some of the writing in this sketch isn;t great

This sketch isn't that great. But the performances of Kenan Thompson, Kerry Washington and Jay Pharoah were all good. I'm looking forward to seeing Lady Gaga host in two weeks. I think she'll be very good.

I've never seen "The Wire"

So I didn't get those jokes.

I think they did this sketch from a show from a couple of seasons ago

This sketch seems to be a a slight rehash from its first installment. The first edition aired when Maya Rudolph hosted back in February 2012. This sketch is well-performed. I also like seeing Jay Pharoah getting more airtime. His performance skills have really improved this season.

I think SNL has found it's next viral hit

I like that they poked fun at her boyfriend. That was a fair parody. But inall honesty, these were a few parts that were a bit exhuberant.

They are finally a doing a parody of "What Does the Fox Say?""

Yes! I', glad they are doing a spoof of this. Though the joke about how his girlfriend's voice c is an strange turn. This is an odd parody of the online video.

The writing for this sketch isn't very funny

The constant usage of the sound effects got very old quickly. This sketch was very weak.

This isn't that funny so far

Pedrad's performance isn't bad, though the material isn't that great. John Milhiser played her son. Kerry Washington is unfortunately not getting to add a lot to this sketch. The machine gun sound effects weren't funny at all

This must be a new character for Nasim Pedrad

She's been using the same voice for quite of her characters over the past few years.

Hopefully this isn't a non-reoccurring sketch

We are Back!

Next sketch is coming up

Commercials are on right now

The show isn't doing bad so far.

I'm guessing this is meant to be poking fun at her show "Scandel"

So basically the joke of this monologue is Kerry Washington helping out scandel-rplagued castmembers. I did like Washington's joke that Vanessa Bayer has played Miley Cyrus enough already. That's two sketches where SNL has made fun of itself tonight. Will we be seeing a third?

I haven't seen much of Kerry Washington's work

I hear "Scandel" is a very good show and that she is great in it.

I also like the subtle referece to the fact that they have six new featured players

That wasn't a bad opening. I'm hoping the rest of the show is good

They are making the joke that Washington will be playing all the African American female personalities

I like that SNL is making fun of itself. And the joke that Jay Pharoah can't play Jay-Z while he's playing President Obama. As well as the fact that they have so many white male castmembers. Rev. Al Sharpton's cameo was surprising. I like seeing the show make fun of itself.

Good to see Jay Pharoah as President Obama

Nice to see Kerry Washington as First Lady Michelle Obama.

And We Are Live.....NOW!!!!!!!!

It's Almost That Time!!!

In ninety minutes, my live-blogging coverage of “Saturday Night Live” will begin. I will be commenting on this week's episode; featuring Guest Host Kerry Washington and Musical Guest Eminem

"Saturday Night Live" Review: Edward Norton Hosts on October 26th, 2013

Cold Opening- A Message from Kathleen Sebelius

This was a humorous opening, as well as one of the couple of high points from this past weekend's show. It was nice to see Kate McKinnon star a cold opening, and she didn't disappoint at all. Her performance as Kathleen Sebelius was funny and her tips regarding how to deal with the technical difficulties plaguing the Obamacare website were very funny. Highlights included McKinnon's Sebelius advising users to switch to the Icelandic site if the English page isn't working as well as suggesting links to other websites if Healthcare.gov isn't working-- such as bitTorrent- where users can downlad movies pertaining to healthcare, such as “Patch Adams.” I also got a laugh at the loading graphic appearing on screen; interrupting McKinnon's Sebelius' most important piece of advice towards dealing with the website. Lastly, it should be mentioned that Bobby Moynihan gave me a chuckle when he was playing an IT worker simply hitting Sebelius' computer monitor when it froze. With the combination of good writing and Kate McKinnon's performance, this cold opening was quite humorous.

Monologue- Edward Norton

For the most part, this monologue wasn't bad. Edward Norton seemed comfortable on the “Saturday Night Live” stage for his first time and I liked his joke saying that he would need thirteen years to prepare for his first hosting stint; as he was originally asked to be on the show back in 2000. Alec Baldwin made a nice surprise appearance to see if Norton was, in fact, ready to host the show. Norton and Baldwin had good chemistry and I enjoyed seeing the latter challenging out host with the task of performing different celebrity impressions. Norton proved to be quite capable of doing so; as he demonstrated some good imitations of Woody Allen and Woody Harrelson. However, a sudden appearance of Miley Cyrus, who actually hosted the show a mere three weeks ago, felt tacked on and unnecessary. She added nothing funny at all and didn't seem to fit in with the likes of Baldwin and Norton. Cyrus' pointless appearance ruined what could have been an entirely good monologue.

Sketch- Stranger Danger

This was the first bad sketch of this very weak episode. In this sketch, Edward Norton played “Officer Rosen”; who was trying to educate schoolkids on how to keep aware of strangers offering them candy. Unfortunately for Norton's character, rambunctious schoolgirl “Shalon”, played by Nasim Pedrad, kept interrupting him to keep exclaiming about how much she wants candy as well as enthusiastically asking if there is said food item in a person's van. The antics of Pedrad's character quickly enticed her fellow students to constantly ask if they could all go to a van in the school's parking lot to see if it had any candy inside. Nasim Pedrad's character became quickly annoying right at the start of the sketch, and her performance caused its entire duration to drag. It should also be said that Nasim Pedrad played her character in a manner that resembled the way she portrayed other characters of this particular age. I fact, there was nothing at all special about this new character. I should point out, however, that Edward Norton handled his role of the sketch's straightman quite well. Unfortunately, the weak writing as well as Nasim Pedrad's over-the-top performance truly made tarred the quality of this sketch.

Image of Nasim Pedrad as "Shalon" and Edward Norton as "Officer Rosen" taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/13/13dstranger.phtml

Sketch- “The Steve Harvey Show”

And, here is bad sketch #2. I'm getting tired of Kenan Thompson portraying talk-how host Steve Harvey as a clueless idiot. The whole idea of Harvey not being able to identify the simplest home-made costumes wasn't funny at all. The joke grew tiresome quickly and Thompson's performance just grew tiresome. But, what really annoys me is that, as I've said before in previous reviews, is that Kenan Thompson has been made into the new star of the show. These “Steve Harvey Show” sketches have grown old quickly and the writers need to realize that Thompson doesn't have the acting chops to be the star of the show. This was just a very bland sketch that only was slightly saved by Edward Norton's performance as the presenter of the costumes. Just another bad sketch.

Commercial - "The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders"

Now, THIS was a creative film-trailer spoof! The very idea of a horror film meshing with the quirkiness of Wes Anderson's film style was an inspired one. I really liked the idea of various characters from his 2001 film “The Royal Tenebaums” being represented as the murderers. Also, Edward Norton's impression of Owen Wilson was spot-on; as he had both of the actor's appearance and voice down-pact. Furthermore, Featured Player Noel Wells bared a st
riking appearance to Gwenyth Paltrow's “Margot Tenebaum”; who was meant to serve as the wife of Norton's Owen-Wilson-portrayed character, character In addition, I liked the references to Wes Anderson's “Fantastic Mr. Fox”; with Nasim Pedrad and Featured Player John Milhiser playing the parents' children (who bore a strong resemblance to the young fox children from Anderson's 2009 stop-motion film). Other highlights included the list of the film's supporting players; all of whom are regularly cast in Anderson's movies. Lastly, the inclusions of of Alec Baldwin as “The Narrator”, which was another good reference aimed at 'The Royal Tenebaums”, as well as a “stop-motion mouse” (another reference to “Fantastic Mr. Fox”) were also hilarious. In other words, this whole segment was great as well-as the last entirely well-written segment of the night.

Image of Edward Norton as Owen Wilson taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/13/13dintruders.phtml

Sketch- Critter Control Interrupts a Business Meeting

I have mixed feelings about this sketch, On one hand, I'm glad to see Featured Player Brooks Wheelan get a starring role after his amusing first commentary on “Weekend Update” from two weeks ago. However, it should be said that his performance as an inept animal control worker was a bit over-the-top-- in a moderate way. Some of his shocked exclamations did make me chuckle, but his overall acting just seemed a bit high-strung for my taste. I did get a few other chuckles from the sketch; particularly from Edward Norton's performance as a friend of Wheelan's character; who was offering some assistance. I also did like the camera angles when both characters were inside ine air vents, gazing and commenting on the unusual antics of the possums that had made their way inside. I also did laugh when Featured Player Back Bennett, who was playing a business worker, stated that he wanted to stick around to see how everything ended, when when his fellow workers wanted to leave. However, the whole, sketch just felt a little strange to me; but, nevertheless, at least it was an original sketch and that Wheelan did get the main role. However, I will admit, that I liked his his “Update” commentary more.

Sketch- Hank the Sevant

I don't know what to make of this sketch. First, I will focus on the positives. Edward Norton did a good job with his performance as the “Rain Man”-like numbers guy; who was supposed to count the money money made from a drug deal with two other dealers; played by Kenan tHompson and Taran Killam. Norton did a good job of mimicking the voice and mannerisms of Dustin Hoffman as “Raymond Babbitt”; the main character from Director Barry Levinson's 1988 film. It should also be mentioned that Featured Player Mike O'Brien did a decent job playing the organizer of the drug deal as well as the boss of Norton's character. His body composure seemed a bit more relaxed than his first on-screen appearance in the “First Used -Car Sale Commercial” from the season premier. Now I will fay the following comments. This sketch did not really go anywhere. The whole point that Norton's character was only a bit player from the “Transformers” movie from 2007 and was not involved with the movie “Rain Man” at all was not at all funny. Also, the joke of him not being able to tally high numbers immediately wasn't humorous at all. The whole sketch itself seemed to be rushed and the ending just seemed kind of abrupt. I feel this sketch could have been better if more time was given to its execution-- thus enabling it to play out in a seamless manner. In all honesty, this sketch wasn't terrible. But, at the same time, I feel that a tiny bit more could have been added to it.

Weekend Update”

Well, this was a particularly short edition of the weekly news segment. That being said, it was hardly funny as well. The only sincere laugh I got was Seth Meyers' quip regarding Kanye West's marriage proposal to Kim Kardashian-- asking “would she make herself the luckiest woman on Earth?” Othan that that, this edition of “update” was pretty darn forgettable. While her delivery wasn't bad, Cecily Strong's jokes weren't funny. In addition, I've become very tired of Bobby Moynihan's second-hand news character “Anthony Crispino” and his comments weren't at all humorous. In fact, Moynihan seemed to truly ham up his performance for this particular appearance, and the entire bit dragged/ Bottom line, aside from Meyers' joke about Kanye West's marriage proposal, this wasn't funny at all.

Sketch- “12 Years Not a Slave”

This was another sketch that was a victim of weak writing. Jay Pharoah played a slave that had been recently released following the Emancipation Proclamation. Pharoah's character was visiting a bar and explaining to a friend of his, played by Edward Norton, his confusion as to why everyone was not sharing in his excitement. First I will say that Pharoah played his part finely and did a good job carrying the sketch. It's clear that he's gained more confidence as a sketch comedy performer, and it is nice to see that his acting has improved. That being said, the sketch itself didn't really go anywhere and the constant cold looks that Pharoah's character was getting by most of those in attendance at the bar wasn't funny at all. Edward Norton did a fine job playing the friend of Pharoah's character and he interacted well with the “Saturday Night Live” castmember. It should also be mentioned that the jokes Norton's character pleading to his friend that he shouldn't dance in front of white people because they would try to dance like him weren't at all humorous; as the humor felf forced. In addition, the quick shot of the female “Saturday Night Live” female castmembers as well as Miley Cyrus twerking wasn't funny at a and just seemed like a poor attempt to skewer the latter's appearance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Overall, despite the fine performances of Edward Norton and Jay Pharoah, the sketch's attempts at humor just felt too forced.

Sketch- Restaurant Virgins

And, here was another poorly-written sketch. In this segment, Edward Norton, Cecily Strong, Nasim Pedrad, and Mike O'Brien played four teenage waiters who were busy laying out their plans for having sex foe all of their first times. The sketch itself was poorly written; as of the performers were basically just describing their planned moves as well as acting them out. The segment just went on too long and Aidy Bryant's character asking if they are all virgins wasn't funny either. The only laugh I got from this sketch was when Bennett, as a customer, asked the waiters if he could have a seat as far away from them as possible. Just the way Bennett delivered his line made me laugh. When seeing him in this as well as the critter control sketch from earlier in the show, I have to say that Beck Bennett reminds me of previous castmembers like Tim Meadows and Chris Parnell; both of whom were adept at playing straightmen in sketches who were able to get chuckles just by delivering the simplest of lines in an easygoing manner, In addition, I will say that, as we have seen earlier in the show, Mike O'Brien has improved as a sketch performer and he did decently keeping up with the acting of Norton, Pedrad, and Strong. Nevertheless, the whole premise of this sketch just fell flat and was just plain ridiculous.

Sketch- Halloween Candy

First, let me say the following: the premise of this sketch, which happened to be Edward Norton playing a homeowner giving bizarre descriptions about the types of candies he will be giving trick or theaters, was basically a rehash of a holiday sketch with Steve Buscemi from December 2011; which featured the actor giving bizarre descriptions of Christmas tree ornaments. In addition, Bobby Moynihan, who was playing the eccentric son of Norton's character, was being used as a replacement for Kristen Wiig's character; who happened to be the clueless wife of Buscemi's character. That being said, I did get a laugh when Norton's character showed off an empty “Cars 2” DVD case; which he planned to be one of the treats he was going to be giving out. Other than that, I didn't like the sheer fact that, while the holiday of Halloween was being used as a substitute for Christmas, the entire concept of the sketch was basically just a rehash of a creative idea from two years ago. Just a weak way of ending the show.

Image of Edward Norton in the "Halloween Candy" sketch taken from http://snltranscripts.jt.org/13/13dcandy.phtml

And, that's all the sketches. I am disappointed that Edward Norton, a talented actor, was subjected to many badly-written sketches. Norton really did the best he could with the weak material and he turned in some meorable impressions as well-- particularly his portrayal of Owen Wilson and his depiction of Dustin Hoffman's “Raymond Babbitt.” Norton handled himself well interacting with the cast in sketches. It's just a shame he had to work with sketches that either poorly-written or featured bad premises. I'd like to see him host again when the writing has greatly improved.

And, that's my review. Hopefully, tonight's show, featuring Guest Host Kerry washington and Musical Guest Eminem, is much better. Though, in all honesty, I don't have a lot of faith-- considering that the writing is so bad. As the best sketch of last week's show was basically just a three-minute parody of a film trailer, the state of “Saturday Night Live”'s writing is grave. I don't know why many of the show's writers are purposely coming up with many poor sketches, considering the fact that they are capable of creating good work (such as the parody-trailer “The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders” from last week's show). It's just beyond me that “Saturday Night Live” cannot create an entirely funny ninety minute comedy show.

Nevertheless, beginning at 11:30pm I will be I will be commenting on the sketches, the writing, the performances, and anything else that comes to mind. And in a couple days, I will be posting a review that features my opinions in greater detail.
